The owner Mike was difficult to work with. He charged me $228 for one hour of his time to LOOK at a broken latch for my back hatch/door of my Jetta wagon. Then quoted me $750 to do the repair. He would only apply $50 of the $228 charge towards the repair. when I have had to deal with the Volkswagen dealer, if they charge you to look at a problem, they apply that fee towards the repair. He was not willing to do that. So I said I'm not gonna do the repair (because now I just don't have any trust ) and I took it somewhere else. I still had to pay the $228 to Mike for him to essentially give me an estimate/ Make a phone call - The other mechanic that I often go to in Mission Viejo charged me $309 for the part and $112 for labor. I've only had one interaction with this company so take this with a grain of salt. Maybe the guy was having a bad day. But bottom line was he was incredibly rude, and short tempered. I unfortunately am a customer rod intoxalock, an ignition interlock company, that is HORRIBLE. So I understand why this guy could have been frustrated, because he is a vendor for a shit company. But I made an appointment to have my device reset, which has to be done in a certain time frame. I called the morning of to verify the appointment and was told there was only one person available, but it could be done at 3:30, so I ended up taking off from work early to ensure I was living up to my end of the deal and was on time. I arrive at 3:20, and was then told the machine was giving them problems. I start getting a little panicky because if I don't get this done asap, my car is going to shut down and I won't be able to get to work. I wait for another 29 minutes while they attempt to fix it, but much to my chagrin, the owner(or manager, a middle eastern man), comes out and tells me there's nothing he can do. I ask him if it would be possible to take a look at his machine again, because I'm kind of desperate, and he erupts, legit ERUPTS into this fit of hand gestures, and rambled speech, shouting at me that I am being hostile, and wasting his time, and he has better things to do. Now I digress, I do understand from my experience with Intoxalock, that just having to deal with this company can cause your hair to turn grey. But his exchange with me was sincerely off putting, rude, hostile in its OWN right, and completely unwarranted. I cannot speak to this business's ability to work on cars, or any other facet of their operations. But if this interaction was in any way indicative of how they run their day to day stuff, it was indicative of a that awful mechanic mentality of "your car is a piece of shit, and I worked on it for 9 hours and couldn't fix it, but you still owe me $1000 for it so pay up and get lost". I took my Volkswagen bus for front and rear brake replacement, I got a call from the shop and was told that both front and rear brakes needed to be replaced, this included 6 wheel cylinders, 2 sets of brake shoes, 2 rubber hose lines and turn 1 brake drum. Total cost I got quated was $2,370.00! For an old bus! I looked up all of parts on J-BUG of Oceanside and the parts totaled $380.00! So they wanted around $2000 for labor??? I said no thanks, VW brakes are not hard to do and went to pick up my bus. I got charged $188.00 on top of it. Ever since the previous owner sold the shop, its never been the same. Most recently I had the need for rapid repair of a sun visor which fell out. I used to go there past times under the owner Gary. Since the new owner took over service (a few years back) work and quotes are not reliable. Inquired for costs for water pump replacement and was quoted about 750.00, he, the new owner I guess, didn't even come out of his office, like I was doing him a favor being there. The person working the front counter (female), may need some customer relations classes. Very unfriendly and she too acted like she was doing me favor to speak with me and speaking seemed to be too much effort for her, she needs to be replaced as this discourages business as it did mine. Ray you gave me a 50-50 chance on the smog test for my vehicle which passed last year ( replaced oxygen sensor ) passed emissions .. Fast forward to this year . The other ( downstream ) oxygen sensor you explained needed to be replaced .. Fair enough given the age of the vehicle .. Kind of like .. Subtle advise to all ? When one head lamp goes out always replace the other ( as the other will get jealous ) .. That said I am in agreement with Ray he had his guy drive my vehicle in that the industry standards require a certain speed maintained ( this exersize "jump starts" the catalytic converter from being in relaxed mode ) in that the monitor will read complete for the vehicle to pass the emission test for Calif with all else reading complete except the catalytic converter ... Ray you explained for me to get the computer reflashed or a new or used computer so the catalytic ( which is considered to be for lack of better term "lazy" on this vehicle ) in responding to the monitor as complete to pass .. Ray suggested Tom's truck in Santa Ana for the reflash or replace .. I phoned Tom's they have'nt done this for any vehicle other than new trucks in years .. Also again Ray with the 50-50 chance of this working ! This to get it smogged which seemingly is your specialty .. Bad intel Ray ! When do you stop with the 50-50 trial and error at the customer expense and begin with a 100% repair satifisfaction ! No nothing when I came for my vehicle to discuss my intel from Tom's ? The last time I took my vehicle there was for repair of the driver's electric window motor. I realized they tried to overcharge me when Ray told me the repair will cost me between $700 to $ 1000!!! Took my wife's VW New Beetle in to resolve engine warning light. Ray charged me $118 for diagnosis (not applied to service) and advised me to replace valve cover. After $400 more for parts and $250 more for labor we picked up the car, only to have the engine light to illuminate on the drive home. Called Ray the next business day and asked several times if he would "consider" refunding the $118 diagnosis fee (or should I say misdiagnosis fee), but he just could not bring himself to even "consider" a refund. Ray is great and service is prompt and good at reasonable price ( I've got a 1979 VW bus). But Pete is a complete pain in the a**. Whenever I ask a question all I get is his negative rundown on older VW buses. Despite Pete's lousy attitude I've kept going back because the repair work is good and the location is convenient for me. Since I bought my bus just 8 months ago I've had $2,000 of service and repairs at this shop and all the work ( oil and lube, new shocks, new fuel lines, new speedo cable, new plugs, wires and distributor cap) was done well. Today I went in to ask about a valve job or engine rebuild and again got an earful of Pete's griping about VW buses and what a piece of junk they are. This happened less then a year ago but I am just now reviewing it because I finally found out that they lied to me. I called them and told them that my 1969 VW squareback died and that it now won't start. The guy told me to bring it down and they would look at it. So to get it down there I had to pay for a tow. When I get there, and the tow truck drops off my car and leaves so I go in to talk with them. After a little explanation the guy tells me that they do not work on old VW'S that have been modified or worked on by others.(WTF) It sure would have been nice if the guy on the phone told me that. He agrees to look at it since I had it towed in. Later that day he calls me back and told me that after looking at it their diagnosis is that the crank gear was broken and they can't fix it. Well fast forward to a few weeks ago. I dropped the engine and took it to a machine shop in Ontario that specializes in custom VW engine rebuilds. Lo and behold no broken gear on the crank. Hmmm I think that the guys at Performance Haus never even looked at it and they charged me for it. They lied to me. Very dishonest and totally unprofessional.
