I never got the impression that he was recommending additional services to jack up the price, but was trying to help me save money in the long run. He was able to shop around and find a good-condition used transmission so that the total cost of replacing both was only slightly more than I was expecting to spend on replacing the clutch. He also was able to get the repair done in one day, so that I could drop it off before work and pick it up after. Like everyone else, I also appreciated how he showed me the parts and explained the repair so that I knew what was involved. Had my 1993 Honda over heat one summer in 2008, needed a new radiator , My car had over 180,000 miles. Alex suggested that replacing the radiator was a waste of time and money , the engine was going to continue to run hot because of the wear and tear I put on this car. I have been going to different auto repair shops for my several cars. A friend recommended me Performance Auto Works, and had been bringing all my cars to them since then. They are honest straight forward, and always show the repairs they do to my car including what was change, and installed. They go out of their way to explain the issues. Alex & Bobby sometimes do some minor improvements in my car like fixing antennae, and windows that does not work properly, including the radio and for minimal cost, and sometimes free of charge. I have been taking my cars to the mechanics at Performance autoworks since forever. And I love this place, I recommend this place to everyone that needs a trusted, go to mechanic and it is well worth the drive. I had a 1989 Honda CRX that I always took to them (we bought the car in 1990) . Everytime I took her to them, she came back even more beautiful, with the engine washed and looking spotless and brand new. And running like a gem. I sadly sold the car when the cost to fix it up to pass SMOG exceeded its value. After 17 years of ownership, it was time to let her go. She was an awesome car, small and compact, fit in any parking space in SF and got amazing mpg for her time, 50mpg when the highway max speed was 55mph. When it was time to sell, of course, Performance Autoworks came to my rescue, instead of having her junked and dismantled, Michael one of the mechanics wanted to buy it from me. He fine tuned her up on his own time and it is still going strong to this very day on her original engine and getting the 50 mpg again. Yay, she was given a whole new life! Any mechanic than doesn't overcharge you, takes loving car of your car so that it can run until well over 310,000 miles is as good as it gets. I replaced my CRX with a Audi TT roadster and I've been taking her to them for my regular oil changes (and they check all your fluids and rotate your tires too!), brakes, you name it. Simply the BEST car repair experience I've ever had. After receiving an estimate from one auto repair shop in San Francisco for $5K+ and another auto repair shop in San Francisco for $3K+, my experience w/Performance Autoworks confirmed my suspicions that the estimates previously provided by the two San Francisco auto repair shops were based, in large part, on lies about repairs that I didn't need. I ended up spending $1.5K and couldn't be happier with the work performed. I won't get into the particulars of the repairs, but Performance Autoworks was able to diagnose and fix a recurring problem in my cooling system, which led to multiple water pump failures over the last ten years, which three different (San Francisco) were unable to diagnose. My elderly aunt recently gave me her 1999 Mercedes C230 with only 45,000 miles on it. It hasn't been serviced since April 2012 but only 2000 miles during that time. I asked Bobby for a thorough inspection of the vehicle as my aunt was paying to make sure it is in perfect condition for me before signing over the registration. Because Bobby said it only needed oil change, new fuel filter & fraying drive belts replaced I felt this was a very honest shop as he could have told me lots of stuff & I would have believed it. He did recommend front brakes as they would need replacing soon so I agreed to it now. The price was very fair.
