Absolutely terrible, I brought my car here a long time ago for a slipping tranny and Son swore it was fine so I took it to AAMCO and they said the tranny was so bad they were surprised I made it to them. My family member recently brought their car there despite me saying not to and now there are several new issues with her car. On top of the new issues Son filled her tires to 50 psi when it clearly states on the tire and the door it's only supposed to be at 35 psi. I think he's too overworked to really take his time to do a good job. Do yourself a favor and don't go here. read more

I had the best experience with Martinez Auto Tech. I needed to do general maintenance for my Subaru Crosstrek at 60,000 miles. I'd been putting it off because finding the right shop (quality service, fair prices, honest recommendations, and not condescending) is so daunting. I enlisted my Dad who owns a dealership in LA to help me find the right Bay Area auto shop. He took the task very seriously and talked to 5+ shops. When he spoke with Martinez Auto Tech, he could instantly tell they were knowledgeable and they gave feedback on what was and wan't necessary for 60,000 mile service. Their prices beat out other local shops as well. When I dropped the car off they were able to take care of everything in one day (spark plugs, oil change, CVT drain and fill, brake flush, rear and front trans axel fluid) for under $1,000. To top it off they were so kind and happy to answer questions along the way. I never felt uncomfortable, unlikely majority of shops I've been to solo as a woman. 5 days later, our VW Golf died and wouldn't restart. I had it towed to their shop while they were closed over the weekend. I called them Monday morning to see if they could figure out what was going on. They were so accommodating and happy to squeeze me in without an appointment. They figured out it was an issue with the alternator and had the car back and running before the day was over. They didn't even charge me for charging up the car since I had just done my Subaru service. I really appreciate a small, local business that values their customers. This was such an act of kindness that I won't forget. I'll never service my cars elsewhere as long as I live in this area and will always recommend them to anyone - especially if you aren't a car expert and need honest guidance and recommendations. They lie about needing work on your car and then when they are discovered after charging money for not even checkin my brakes, refused to refund anything, The younger woman at the front desk does not understand English or is simply lying, She conveyed misinformation to me repeatedly, A lot of people are probably paying for work they do not need. I've been coming here a few years. They have been great. Mechanic shops as a female I do not trust. They always spike the need and pricing. Here I don't feel that way. They don't try to sell me more instead they ask me what do I need. They always explain any needed service and break the costs. The main reason I continue to come back was from my previous vehicle kept breaking down and he advised me he didn't think the price to fix the vehicle was worth to keep the car. My transmission started slipping. Son quickly did research and determined it was the ECU and that the dealer had to replace because it needed software updates. I went to the local Toyota dealer who refused this and told me I needed a whole new transmission for $5300 (a rebuild with more miles than my car!). I forced the issue and got the ECU fix and all is better with my transmission. Toyota then quoted me to replace my serpentine belt while they were in there I said no. I had to be in Oakland by 9:30am and the shop opened at 8am, I was cutting it so close my teeth hurt. I showed up 5 til 8 begging and hoping they could fix my car/recommend a rental service in the next half hour, so I would also have time to go home, load up my car and beat the traffic. 20 minutes later Quentin had my car fixed and sent me on my way. These guys are the greatest. Really. I mean it. Go to them. I first came here for a routine oil change. They were super fast and super professional. And unlike Jiffy Lube and other similar companies, they will do the oil change... and nothing else. They don't try to charge you extras. I truly appreciate it. Next, I came here for a smog check. They were super fast and, again, super affordable. But what earns them 5 stars is what happened today. I returned from a week's holiday vacation in the Midwest to find my beloved Honda Fit wouldn't start. AAA jump-started my car and told me that it's time to replace my 4-year-old battery. I drove it to work, dropped it off with these guys, and they conducted a battery check. They called me an hour later and told me that I didn't HAVE to get a new battery yet but my Fit may not be performing its best, especially on cold Berkeley mornings. I said, "can you replace it by the end of the day?" They said, "of course!" My Honda Fit now has a brand-new battery for only $10 of labor costs plus the cost of the battery itself. If I took this to the dealer, it would be over $300 for everything. Here, it was less than $100 for everything. Martinez Auto is great and honest. Test drove a used truck from a nearby dealer and brought it in. Son (mechanic) told me $80 to do an overview and see if it's worth my money. When I went to pick it up, he pointed out things needing attention, and I went to pay him, and he didn't charge me at all! He explained since I may not even end up buying the truck, why waste my money? I assured him if I ended up getting it, my first stop would be back at his shop to pay him for the hour he spent looking it over. Very nice guy! First visit in September. Took my Wife's red 2001 Explorer to this busy little shop, right around the corner from my office in downtown Martinez. Just needed an oil change. But, as I talked with Son I realized something was different about these guys. He tilted his head and listened to me really carefully, as I talked about a coolant concern. Looking slowly around, I noticed the early morning sun glancing off the hood of many customers cars parked at various angles. I thought to myself, "Wow. These guys are busy." Later, I returned to find they not only changed the oil, but diagnosed the coolant issue and fixed it. And, you know, they didn't even charge me for fixing the coolant problem? So, having had a good first experience, I took my White 2004 Lexus in this morning, for a long overdue brake job. Quinten came walking out from underneath a blue Van to greet me with a warm smile. I expressed concern about a low air pressure light that has plagued my beloved Lexus four or five years now. He squinted as he carefully thought about the puzzling warning light that won't go away. I've asked other shops if they could just disable it, including the Lexus dealership and the reply was a bland, "NOPE". When I asked why several different mechanics just said, "'cause it just doesn't work that way". But again, these guys are so different than that. Quintin carefully and patiently explained how the four lines go separately into the sensor unit, and there is even a sensor at the spare tire. That the computer could not be altered as a solution... So much better to hear than "NOPE". At the end of the day, I got a great price on the job, a careful diagnosis of my tire sensors, and he even printed out a help sheet showing me where the reset button is. I was looking for a place that is more local since moving from Walnut Creek. I called around and they seemed to have the best deal. $30 for an oil change for my car. I drove right down there and they finished it up in about 50 mins. Plus for location. I just stopped into Copper Skillet for some breakfast while I waited. I liked that they didn't bog me down with other things that were wrong with my car, or try to sell me stuff. I just asked for an oil change and that's what I got. I will return :) read more

I took my car there because I thought I had a crack in my head gasket and that it wasn't fully blown. They took me in in short notice and ran all the tests. It turned out it was a PCV valve. $55 repair and I have never been happier. They were quick and could have pulled a fast one on me. Any other place it probably would still be in the shop while they tried to figure out what was wrong with it. I will only be going there from here on out.
