This place used to be good...but the mechanics changed and a simple oil-change almost ruined my car. New mechanics seemed inexperienced - used really cheap filter, didn't put cap back on properly, and for some reason the coolant cover was loosened, causing a huge mess. Prices and management are good, but the people that handle under the hood were loose with their work. read more

If I could give this place a lower rating, I would...complete waste of time. Charged for a diagnostic and never diagnosed one thing. Just gave me the run around about this, that and the other - which I know wasn't true. Loose wires here and there but couldn't show me where. Told me wires were not connected and that they connected them for me. Complete lie, the wire(s) he was referring to have always been connected and never been disconnected as he claimed. Lie after lie... Kept passing the puck to the technician. Never brought the technician out to explain what he clearly couldn't. Save your time and money by taking your business elsewhere. read more

(That is illegal) their communication is very bad and I was promised update calls that never happened. Now I am stuck with multiple codes that my car did not have before they worked on it. My low tire pressure light came on, and my tires looked okay. However, I knew something was wrong. I called Performance Auto Center, and Jesse said to bring my vehicle in and he would check it out. He tested the sensors, tire pressure, and even took my vehicle for a test drive. He educated me about tires and sensors. I'm usually skeptical when taking my vehicle to a shop that I've never been to before. I usually like to have small conversations with the mechanics to get a feel for how they deal with customers. Coming from a similar industry and dealing with technicians/mechanics on a daily basis, it has become much easier to recognize if they are genuine or not. Just moved here and needed an oil change and my check engine light went on on my perpetually problematic Mini Cooper. The owner is very nice and straight forward. I felt like I could really trust him as he told me things about my car that other mechanics never mentioned and instead they always suggested costly repairs. I had a coupon from their website for an oil change but my car requires synthetic oil. He honored the coupon anyway. Having to take your car into the shop is like having to go to the dentist. Very kind and honest. I highly recommend coming here for smog checks etc. The seating area is clean and water is provided. It is clear that Jas cares about his clients. He also has a customer system which keeps track of services provided for your car! You can keep track of what was done and when so if you have to have emergency auto work done at another place you can pull it up and show them. We bought a used car that we thought was in decent shape...wrong! Got it home and a few days later it had leaked all over the driveway and we noticed that when it rode it tried to pull in the direction that we WEREN"T going in. Took it to Jas on a recommendation. Long story short, best decision of my life. Jas and his mechanic diagnosed my leaks and got them fixed at a reasonable rate, then they turned around and did the same for my steering and suspension. I would have easily paid 3500-4000 USD for that work somewhere else. I won't say how much I paid, but it was much lower than what I just listed. If you're in mess, try Jas. I really don't find myself saying this a lot about auto repair places, but... words cannot describe the love I have for this place! About two weeks ago, ~on a dark and stormy night,~ I drove to the grocery store to pick up a late dinner, which is approximately... oh, a mile away from my house. Upon getting back into my car, ready to drive home, my engine made some whirring noises but stubbornly refused to turn on. This problem turned into a three-hour-long middle-of-the-night ordeal that involved me getting my car towed to Performance Auto Center because it was the closest auto repair place and seemed to get good reviews. The guy who towed my car just sort of left my car in the middle of their lot, blocking a bunch of other cars, assured me it would be fine, and brought me home. I immediately called them first thing the next morning (it was a Saturday, so they had shorter hours than normal, too-- keep in mind) to let them know that that was my car, and if they were going to be able to work on it, I would have to walk down to drop off my keys (~30 minute walk). The guy who answered the phone said sure, don't worry, just get them here as soon as you can. Dropped off the keys to the owner, and then Javier let me know that I could leave it with them for now while they checked it out and would call me with a quote for the repairs. I walked off, got some breakfast, and maybe a half hour to forty five minutes later, they called me, let me know the charges (which were AMAZINGLY cheap compared to what I expected), and made sure to ASK if I wanted it done. Of course! By the time their end of the day rolled around (about 2:00 or 2:30), they called me, said my car was ready. I stopped down at the garage, and they said that they fixed one of my broken sensors inside the car that had been a nuisance for me for a while. At first, I thought, "Uh oh, another charge?" Nope! He quickly gave me the invoice with the price listed that I'd have to pay, and it was still the base (super cheap!!) rate that they gave me over the phone. I drove my car off the lot super happy-- it was working just fine! Fast forward to last night. Yet again, in the middle of the night, another car problem happened (my car is old, so this sort of comes with the territory)-- but this time it seemed a lot more minor. I had a problem with my door ajar sensor, and I was afraid it would drain the battery. This morning I brought it in, the owner greeted me, cracked a joke about the makeshift "repair" that I did to turn the sensor off during the night, took a look at the problem and worked on it for a few minutes. "Okay! It's ready," he told me, walking off with his tool box. "The door sensor was working fine, it was just the door itself that seemed to have a dent in it. But it's fixed now." "Thank you!" I said. Expecting him to lead me inside where I could pay, I sort of awkwardly stood there watching him talk to Javier. "So," I interrupted, "should I pay inside?" "Oh, no," both he and Javier said. "It's ready. It's good to go." I stared in silence, still a little confused. "No charge," Javier chuckled. "Really?!" The two of them laughed and nodded, and sent me on my way. I had to try really hard to resist my urge to give them both a giant, bear hug. I, just... I hope I've conveyed my feelings for this place appropriately. Car troubles are some of the most distressing things to me, and this place has provided amazing, quick service to me, both times that I have gone to them now! I'm very happy that I happened to find them by chance the night my engine decided to be lazy. I'm planning on always coming back here if I have any car troubles! read more

After this store finished a mechanical inspection and smog check for me, I decided to buy a used car from a seller.Because the boss told me this car is in good condition. But now I have found evidence that some parts of my car has been hit before. I am really disappointed about their service. I trusted them and paid money for checking this car condition. The boss did not tell me anything about its history. The evidence can be easily found by other auto store. I still remember that the boss asked the seller which result he want,pass or not. Why doesn't this place have more reviews? This is a great place to take your car! I've just had a great experience and want to share to the world how wonderful they were in taking care of my car. I've been to so many mechanics, many who have tried to cheat me because I'm a woman. Some others were just too expensive. This is somewhere where it's reasonable and respectful. I had just gone to another place for a standard oil change and tried to get me to replace my radiator because "it was cracked and leaking." They also tried to have me spend $500 on my rear shocks. I already knew my rear shocks needed to be replaced but my radiator? I took it to Performance Auto for a second opinion and estimate on my shocks. They checked the radiator, and it was fine. But my shocks and struts were in danger of going out. They gave me an estimate at something I can afford with an option of just replacing the rear or both front & rear. I cannot afford to do it all but definitely did the rear since they were worse. Next day, my car was done and it drives so much better! It was like Indiana Jones Ride bad before and now it's a dramatic change! I will definitely be coming back to replace my front struts! read more

it's hard to find a good, honest, well-priced, friendly mechanic; in the bay area we had an awesome shop that took great care of our cars and they did a wonderful job on education, so we were bummed when we moved back down to LA and were forced to find a new mechanic. when i needed service on my car, the first thing that my first-generation traditional chinese dad did was cut out ads for deals on service; as i hunted them down online for reviews and on the BBB i found out they were awful and was growing discouraged until i saw the BBB reviews of performance auto center: http://www.la.bbb.org/Business-Report/Performance-Auto-Center-13010683 even better, they were close by and easily accessible, so i stopped by with my dad and met the owner, Jas. back when i took my car there, i was still a uc berkeley grad student and his son was just applying to colleges. we gossiped about colleges (go bears!) and he was so personable and helpful that i couldn't resist feeling immediately comfortable. as he was taking care of my car i enjoyed reading the articles about jas in the cal poly newspaper about him talking about caring for the cars of students and treating people fairly, flipping through is various car magazines, and chatting with him and his equally friendly mechanic, javier. fast forward and years later, my dad religiously takes all of his cars here as do my husband and me. my dad always raves about jas - jas has had his workers drive my dad back home instead of waiting in the shop, fixed my tire for free where another service shop was going to charge $50 just to look at it, and, most importantly, he always does a very thorough and fair job inspecting and caring for our cars and his prices are very reasonable and competitive (i just got my 150K service that included oil change, spark plugs, transmission on my 1997 honda civic for $184). i also like that they always call to update you on the status and cost breakdown, answers every question that i have (i'm a big fan of education), and in the rare cases that they don't know the answer to my questions, will research the answer and promptly call me back. they're open 8am-5pm on the weekdays and i believe open half a day on saturdays; there's a slightly sketchy-looking after hours drop box (it's basically a black hole in the wall) but it works and they call in the morning when they get your keys. yay for jas and javier! read more
