Steak philly with onions and green peppers.
    Morgan B.

Pepperjax doesn't deserve 3 stars, but it also shouldn't be 4 stars either. I rate this place a 3.5. It's definitely overpriced for what you get. I got a steak Philly and it was $8.51 and that did not include fries or a drink. I could go down the street to Free State and get a beef sandwich with fries for $1.50 more and the quality would be much better. The sandwich tasted good, but there wasn't anything great about it. This place is good to go for a quick low-key bite to eat, but with all the other quick bite restaurants surrounding it, this wouldn't be my first choice. Chipotle is 2 doors down and has much better quality and quantity of ingredients for the same price. Fuzzy's or Taco Zone would also be better. Pepperjax isn't bad at all, but it is overpriced and there are better choices surrounding it.

Really good sandwich. I believe original owners of chartreuse caboose in KC thru early 1990's?

Amazing Philly! Great service. I had the philly and chips and queso. Everything was spot on. You get a lot for the price.

Reminds me of the Philly steak places you would find in a mall food court. The food is good, just not quite worth the cost.

The food was decent... at least half the restaurant tables had leftover food. Will not be returning.

Total comfort food. The hamburgers are juicy and delicious, and the drinks are just as strong. The Old Fashioned is my go-to every time. I've tried a few other cocktails, but I always come back to this one--it never disappoints. The staff is always so friendly and helpful--great service every visit. Yes, parking can be a little tight, but that's part of the charm and uniqueness of Big Mill and its history. We've had a couple of visits where the crust tasted slightly like old butter, but it's only happened a few times and definitely hasn't stopped us from going back. Great pizza, great burgers, strong drinks, and consistently friendly service--we'll keep coming back.

The food is good but it's not GREAT. I think the prices are a bit high for what you get. To me, this is a restaurant that is trying to be fancy but can't pull it off. Parking is a crap shoot, at best. The parking lot is super small. The restaurant is easy to access for those with mobility concerns. There will be those who disagree with me but there isn't anything outstanding about this establishment. Every time I have been here, the service has been lacking. Everyone is friendly enough but they have problems getting my take out orders correct. I usually get a burger to go. Oh, yeah... fries are extra. If I'm paying $14 for a cheeseburger, you would think fries would be included. Not here. Bottom line... it's not bad but there are other, better restaurants in town.

The restaurant itself is beautiful inside -- a cozy mix of rustic and modern that creates a really inviting atmosphere. Service started a little slow, though our waitress became more attentive once she came by. We mentioned it was our first visit, so I was a bit surprised there wasn't much guidance on the menu or any recommendations. At one point I asked about the two kinds of fries (I love fries!), and the explanation was simply that they were "fancy fries," without much detail on flavors or differences. We started with drinks and the Brussels sprouts appetizer. The sprouts were actually very good, with a nice balance in the sauce, and both the wine and sangria were refreshing. Unfortunately, dinner is where things went downhill. Our meals -- a steak and a gluten-free chicken sandwich -- took about 45 minutes to arrive, which felt long for relatively simple dishes. I had asked about the gluten-free bun since they can sometimes be dry, but didn't receive much insight beyond "it's gluten free," and sadly it was indeed very dry. The chicken itself lacked flavor, though the goat cheese cilantro sauce helped make it somewhat enjoyable. The fries looked homemade and delicious but arrived cold. The steak was cooked as requested, but it didn't have much flavor beyond the mushrooms on top. The broccoli side was tasty, and the potatoes were good, though it on a bed of Some kind of cheese sauce that wasn't quite to our liking. Overall, the space and gluten-free availability were promising, and the appetizers and drinks were enjoyable, but the food execution and service details didn't quite meet expectations for us this visit.

The vibe was fun and inviting, and it looks like they've carried over the magic from their super popular Christmas pop-up into a fresh, spring-inspired theme. It adds a really playful, seasonal touch without feeling overdone. What really made the visit stand out, though, was the service. Our waitress was fantastic--super friendly, attentive without hovering, and offered great suggestions that we actually ended up loving. Tip: Get a basket of French fries for the table! Overall, it's one of those spots that works for just about anything--family outings, catching a game, bigger group gatherings, or even a more low-key, intimate meal. Some of my favorite food items include: the Bill Self Mac, ANY of the pizzas, Cobb Salad, Meatball Grinder, and Patty Melt. OOOOOH and if you are in the mood for an appetizer they have one of the best artichoke dips in Lawrence, hands down!!
