Haven't been out here to Pepperbelly's in a while. Tonight was disappointing. The Pepperbellies were overdone. My nachos seem to have just been thrown together. There is a sign warning that incomplete parties would not be seated and to be expect to wait 15 to 30 minutes. It took a little longer than usual to be seated. The service was good but the food was subpar when compared to what I have come to expect from Pepperbelly's. Hopefully just a one off lackluster experience. read more

We stopped in for a family lunch at Pepperbelly's while on a day trip. The server was so sweet. The food came out incredibly fast. We enjoyed the salsa and queso appetizer. The fajita taco plate was a miss. The meat was off. The Pepperbelly special was sadly a miss as well. My kids did enjoy their fish and fries kids meal. First dining experience was awesome! Discovered the Saturday night special was steak for two. We ordered that with baked potato, side salad and fried okra. It was grilled to perfection accommodating medium and medium well. Best steak we have had in a while. Added perk was the butter toasted Texas toast! The servers were very friendly and efficient. On a road trip, I found this place on Yelp! and driving through town and pretty seriously irritating our GPS lady, we decided to stop in. It looked like everyone in town was there so we figured we picked a good spot. There was a wait but we were willing to wait. Once we were seated the service was very friendly and fairly quick for how busy they were. I believe we would stop back here if we ever found ourselves hungry in this area. Stopped here while doing some Sunday driving around Texas to visit all the County Courthouses. Pepperbelly's is RIGHT across from the beautiful San Saba County Courthouse, so it definitely has the location. In fact, there are two very nice community parks a short drive away if you want to make it a take-out picnic like we did. I went with the three taco platter for a Sunday lunch. I kind of wish I had tried something else. It was good, but I'm sure they could have done better with something else. This was pretty standard fare sprinkled with highlights. It came with chips & salsa. The chips were good, but the salsa seemed like straight up Picante sauce (mild) or something. It worked for me, but it wasn't memorable. The platter came with a (lack of better word) adorably small dollop of Spanish rice. This was actually pretty good which made my disappointment in the quantity even worse. Perhaps they serve more if you dine in. Once again, they nailed the sides with the beans. Another great, flavorful side. The tacos were a disappointment. Once again, their wholesale distributor of food let them down with the crunchy taco shells. In Texas they have got to find a local provider. The meet & "fixings" were very good & flavorful, but the shell showed their fixation on cost. Good place and the BEST (only?) spot for a Sunday lunch in San Saba. The service is top notch, #10 steak ranchero cooked medium rare will not disappoint. Pepperbelly's is BYOB. Saves you money to just bring it in. Their awesome breakfast is served saturdays only 7am-10:45am, but if you want to eat the best dang burger of your life this is the place. We've been searching for the best Mexican restaurant in Central Texas. Today we found it! The beef fajitas were amazing and some of the best we've had anywhere in Texas. We moved here from Fort Worth and this little spot on the square in San Saba rivals any of the best restaurants there. The queso, guacamole, beans rice were all exceptional as well. We topped off the meal with churro donuts. Oh my! They were little bites of heaven. Get in your car, drive down here and prepare to make this great restaurant your go-to for beyond delicious food! I was there on the evening of 4/22. I went to the ladies room to wash my hands and someone had defecated all over the toilet and floor. They should've closed the bathroom and cleaned it immediately. I couldn't go somewhere else, my elderly friends took me there as a treat. The salsa is excellent! The service was good. The cheese enchiladas were terrible, the cheese inside wasn't melted. The rice was so-so. They ran out of refried beans. They also ran out of coke. my friend's bean and cheese nachos were just a pile of chips, beans and cheese. Pepperbelly's is not just a Mexican food restaurant. Yes, they have Tex-Mex and it is the primary staple of this restaurant. However, they also have good burgers. There mushroom burger is very good. They also have fish. I think they still have "All you can eat" fish nights but I can't remember if it is all the time or only on specific nights. They get busy on Sunday because they are one of the few places open. Also, during deer season, they can get a little busier after dark when the hunters start filing in. Even with this, I have never waited for a table. I give them 4 stars based on their service, decent quality, and Sunday hours. I will eat here when I'm in town. read more

Have been eating here for years. My favorite is the beef fajitas. Second place is the fried fish plate and third is the chicken fried steak. Honorable mention goes to their version of the philly cheese steak but you gotta get it with extra cheese or it's just also ran. Chips and salsa and sweet tea are very good. Camping at Colorado Bend State Park. We drove to San Saba to have more food options. Stopped here to eat. We were a little weary because the place was almost empty on a Friday night dinner. Although there were other waitstaff available but a standing around, the night manager picked up our table of 8, brought us drinks, told us to wait when were getting ready to give her our order, hung out in the back of the restaurant. I went to the restroom and saw her texting and talking on her phone. She proceeded to talk twenty more minutes to a table that has already eaten. I finally got up to go to the hostess and ask for a manager. She told me my waitress was the manager and another waitress said she would take care of us. Food is way mediocre. read more

Myself and several of my friends visited Pepperbelly's in October 2019. It was recommended to me by another close friend. We were headed to Kerrville and normally stop Coopers BBQ in Llano for several years for lunch. But I decided to try Pepperbelly's!! It was fantastic Food, Service, Prices all great!! I really tried to think of something good to say, but I couldn't come up with a single line. First thing we noticed were the specials. Not in the correct order, they were: steal for 2, chicken fried steak for 2, all you can eat catfish, and fajitas for 2. For a Mexican restaurant, it has very little Mexican food. The "specialties" were a burrito, enchilada, taco and some beef tips in gravy. All of these items were extremely basic with nothing that made me think they should be called special. The only enchilada options were beef, chicken and cheese. My wife had the beef enchiladas. It actually looked pretty good on the plate, but there was no flavor. She gave me a bite and said, "what does this taste like?" "Nothing, it tastes like absolutely nothing," I said, though I could clearly see beef and cheese and a tortilla in there. Rice and beans were lacking something too. Flavor. I decided to go nuts and got the All You Can Eat catfish with fries and coleslaw. The catfish was sliced into thin strips and heavily battered. It looked kind of like fried catfish but lacked the normal catfish flavor. I couldn't eat more than two due to the extreme salt of the batter. It came with two cold cornbread sticks that were rubbery as if they were microwaved about an hour before we got there. The fries seemed undercooked with some kind of batter on them, and they weren't hot either. The coleslaw looked creepy. It was like a soup of cabbage. I had to eat it with the knife because it wouldn't stay on a fork and there was no spoon! Service was quite nice and we tipped well...wasn't her fault the food was, well, I don't even have a word for that. She seemed disappointed that I couldn't put away one plate and asked several times if I wanted more. No. Maybe they make a decent burger or a chicken fried steak. Seems like a place that should focus on one thing and get it right instead of having lots of "bleh" things. At 6PM the place was dead quiet for dinner for being such a large restaurant in a town where there aren't many choices. If they served alcohol, it might make the food easier to swallow. With the low prices and the bland food, it's probably perfect for senior citizens. I'd rate this place slightly below the beef enchilada MRE. read more
