First of all, the service was impeccable. My waitress was so sweet and gave me excellent suggestions, so I opted for the biscuits and gravy since I was starving-I still could only eat one of them: flaky, buttery and delicious with a creamy sausage gravy that was also spot on. The side of bacon I ordered was also perfection, and the offer strong and dark, just the way I like it. I decided to order a cheese enchilada to go for dinner as I wanted to taste their red chile, which again, had a great flavor with just enough spice to leave my lips tingling after each bite. The beans and rice were good too. I had often passed this place, eyeing its colorful patio that looks like the ideal spot for a margarita. We came to the area for roasted Hatch before the festival. We had to stop in for lunch here as Anthony Bourdain did say the Enchilada sauce was the best. When we walked it we were greeted immediately told to sit where we want. I love the oil cloth covered tables, and old Mexico decor. Nothing fancy yet cozy like I'm at someone's home. Everything on the menu emphasized the beautiful Hatch. I ordered the Enchiladas one with red sauce one with green which came with rice and beans. My hubby ordered a Combo plate that was unbelievably large, and beautiful. I wish we took photos of the food, but after eating the salsa that was unlike any salsa I have ever had...just couldn't. The flavors of the sauce were remarkable as if a lovely Grandmother is in the kitchen cooking her special dishes. There is no hard alcohol. I don't know about beer or wine as they are open until 3:00 pm. We had giant glasses of water because the spice was so smooth, and addictive you can't stop eating. read more

We had a great meal at the Pepper Pot. My wife had a chile relleno made with a Hatch green chile. I had the combination plate: two rolled cheese enchiladas with Christmas (Hatch red chile on the left and Hatch green chile on the right), a ground beef taco, and a Hatch green chile relleno. It's hard to get chile like this outside of New Mexico and Hatch is the center of the known universe of chile. Plain inside, dressed up with some colorful silhouettes hanging from the ceiling. This place was the first place, that we started us eating chili rellenos whenever we are in NM. It's also why I started making them, only using Hatch chilies of course. The food here is delicious. Reviews said service was slow but we were ok with that possibility. It wasn't the case for us but it was close to closing time... 1pm and they close at 2 on this day. And while finding someone to seat you is a bit of a task... finally was able to ask and told sit anywhere, I still give it 4 stars. We did have to move dishes to another un-bussed table as few were clean. But again, 4 stars. We both ordered the Combination plate. This has a ground beef taco, two Hatch chili cheese enchiladas and a chili relleno. All plates come with beans and rice. There were a couple of other small issues but the food was what keeps this small place in a small town, a 4 star place. The good. The rice and beans really are some of the best. Great flavor and texture, cooked perfectly. The taco was seasoned nicely and had fresh produce and cheese. They come in a corn tortilla. I did ask for soft, which I thought meant a flour tortilla but was a lightly cooked corn, but very good. The enchiladas, we were asked if we wanted red, green or Christmas sauce, (Christmas means red on one green on the other or if one item, red on 1/2 green on 1/2,) so we chose Christmas. Both sauces and enchiladas taste excellent. The chili relleno was the hit of the plate. A nice egg batter surrounded the Hatch chili stuffed with cheese. We have found and become use to sauce covering it but found ours lacking the usual sauce. Side not, we ate at a place in Yuma and you had to ask for sauce on a chili relleno and they would only allow red or green. Not 50/50 aka Christmas. Regardless, it was D-Lish-us! The good at the Pepper Pot is truly worth the stop and some small inconveniences. Just know beforehand what to expect. Also, our service at this odd time was very fast. The bad. Not a good system for getting a seat. Had to clear a table ourselves. The big bummer for us though was for some ridiculous reason, they charged us $2.00 each for Christmas style!?!? It is literally the same sauce as used if you pick red or green. By measurement it is the same amount. Red cost the same as the green. We were NOT told at anytime that Christmas was a $2 up charge. Fortunately, this massive amount of delicious food was only $12 a plate. Unfortunately, it affected our servers tip. She should have told us. Still, if you go in knowing, you won't be disappointed. Leave it to me to show up in Hatch on a day that Sparky's was closed. No matter. The Pepper Pot came through for me with a very good Hatch Chile burger. The waitress recommended it even over their famous Hatch Valley Burrito! My only regret were not specifying medium rare and not including cheese, which I later learned adds a bit of saltiness and literally pulls the chiles together with the burger. Onion rings were a tasty no-cost side option. Even the salsa was good. No craft beer, but Modelos worked great in this setting. Pleasant, efficient service. This place is a classic small town, really good restaurant. I knew it was going to be good after being in there for less than 5 minutes. It was all locals, and they all knew each other. When they brought the chips and salsa I knew they weren't playing here at all. Many Mexican restaurants bring a bland salsa - this was zippy and freshly made. The menu was diverse but not so big they couldn't do everything well. I had the Pepper Pot burrito, which had been featured on the Travel Channel. The waitress sad it was her favorite, so I went with it. It came smothered with red and green sauce, one on one end, one on the other. The pork inside was excellent, and the combination of that and the cheese and sauce made this literally one of the best burritos I've ever eaten, and I've eaten A LOT of burritos. The portion size was extremely generous. My wife had the quesadilla with chicken and it was huge, and also excellent. She got the "Christmas Sauce" on the side, which is a red and a green, and excellent. The people at the table next to us got a chili bowl and a taco plate. Both were massive, and this little old lady knocked down that taco plate like a sumo wrestler. I told her I was impressed and she told me she never leaves a bite when she eats here. The service was also very good - the waitress we had was awesome. I live about 90 minutes from Hatch, NM, and I would drive that just to have the burrito again! What an outstanding meal. My husband had a hatch chili hamburger and I had a Chilie Relleno meal. Both very authentic. We found out that this is a popular local spot and had the pleasure of sharing a table with a local farmer and his grandson and learned the history of the restaurant and lots of about his life and farming. He even bought our meal! What a kind gesture to just two people passing thru town. I would recommend this restaurant over the other touristy one up the street that you come to first. read more

The Red Chile meat and the sauce which was all over the other food was disgustingly Sweet. Over the years I've had too strong and too mild but never complained-that comes with the territory here in NM. The sickly sweet tastes ruined everything it touched: potatoes, beans, and eggs. The meat was also very poorly trimmed with big chunks of fat. My wife had the Majacca breakfast and she enjoyed it. After this and a previous visit's mediocre taco plate several years ago I won't be coming back. With these Covid days, I'm not a frequent out-of-house diner. I'm glad I made an exception today and visited the Pepper Pot in Hatch. I decided to take a motorcycle tour of the area, Las Cruces to Hatch to Silver City and back to Las a Cruces. So a visit to the adorable town of Hatch, and the Pepper Pot was a perfect fit! Restaurant: Spacious inside and they also have outside seating available. I would have preferred more distance from my (outside seating) nearest table neighbor ... but that's where he plopped himself :) I would have especially preferred the space distanced because he was not wearing his mask - assuming of he's outside it's ok to skip the mask. My server Ciro (?) was terrific and my eggs ranchero Christmas style of red and green sauce hhwas PERFECT!!! Just about my favorite breakfast in a very long time. The potatoes and the red and green sauce, along with the Pork and Onions were simply Superb!!! Environment was clean including spotless restrooms and the overall feeling was welcoming and bright.
