Pepper Lunch is a must go spot whenever I'm visiting Hong Kong. This location in Richmond doesn't have the same kind of beef as in HK but aside from that it tastes the same as overseas (in HK and JP). Every copycat recipe always calls for plain butter but it's definitely not just butter in the rice. Wish I knew what it contains!! Personally, I would opt for the regular beef pepper rice next time. Even if it is really Japanese beef, it wasn't impressive enough to get the wagyu again. read more

We've visited this place a few times now and have never once been disappointed! You place your order first at the counter and they bring out your food on a sizzling hot plate. They do close quite late in comparison to their other locations, which is a plus for anyone wanting to enjoy dinner here. We had a couple orders of the spicy pork pepper rice and their tonkatsu chicken rice. The rice is buttery and flavourful and delightfully peppery, and goes well with the sauce from the spicy pork. They also provide a separate sauce at the table for their plainer meat options. The portion sizes are just right and you're guaranteed to leave happily full. Heard so many good things about Pepper Lunch from a friend who consistently visits different locations every time she travels and sees one. Luckily for me, this one was in the shopping centre and no lines. Basically, you purchase at the counter prior to seating and the waiter will bring a table number to the seat you have chosen. It takes no more than 5 minutes to put together your food, which is a plus! I ordered one of their most basic dishes, beef pepper and rice with an egg and wagyu beef with rice. The waiter brought over 2 different sauces which one is super salty and the other one is more on the sweeter side. I don't think there's anything too special about the dishes except that it cooks at your table. Portions were small but it was worth a try! read more

I have been to pepper lunch a few times and I feel for the price, I don't think it is worth it. I want to give two stars but the food is okay. You don't get that much protein and there isn't any side dishes. On average it is about $15 and you can definitely get rice/protein with sides and soup for the same price at a Japanese Katsu place or Taiwanese restaurant. I don't think I would personally go there if it wasn't for friends. The service is quick, and it has always been consistent. If maybe they lower their prices I would give it more stores. I feel that there are way more options in Richmond to go to than going here. read more

A friend recommended Pepper Lunch during our visit in Richmond, BC Canada. You walk in and there is a desk with a menu behind the register. There are choices from seafood to Wagyu beef or Kobe beef on a sizzling hot platter that is about 10-11" in diameter. Pepper rice in the center with the meat around it. Prices are very reasonable. Anywhere from $7.50 to $15.95. $15.95 will get you Kobe beef, Angus beef, sizzling rice, miso soup, drink and a Mochi ice cream. This place is not in our state yet so it was a treat to try. Overall: I'd come back to pepper lunch, but I'm not sure if I will come back to this particular branch again since I'm not a fan of their decor. So how it works is that you walk up and order. Then they tell you a number table to sit at. The food is serve on a sizzling plate. I got the signature pepper lunch with extra beef for $2. Food is consistently yummy. You get to add the 2 flavored soy sauce to it making it extra tasty. Comparing the taste to the other locations, I like the Cambie location more. read more

I've heard about Pepper Lunch for years because my brother and dad would talk about it all the time. Hot pot usually isn't my #1 go-to, but since I've never tried this spot before, I was willing to check them out! The restaurant is set up fast-food style - you order at a counter and the food gets brought out to your table. The menu is straightforward. There are a variety options to choose from: beef, chicken, salmon, veggie. I went for the salmon with rice. I've never had salmon hot-pot style before, so all of this was new to me. Your food is served in a cast iron hot pot skillet. When it gets to your table you have to mix it up with the rice and veggies to cook the protein. Careful not to touch the skillet though, because it's hot, hot, hot! I personally thought the portions were more than enough. I was so stuffed by the end of my meal! Quality wise, it was just mediocre. I wasn't blown away, but wasn't impressed either. You're coming here to pay for the fast food hot pot experience, if anything. I'm glad I was finally able to try this spot, but I don't think it's going to get added to my rotating lunch spot list. read more

We love this location! Easy to access and there is plenty of parking. We used to frequent the location on No. 3 Road when shopping or after staying the night in Richmond after the Night Market. Service is always quick and courteous. Although there is an increase in offerings (poutine, katsu curry, creamy noodles, etc.) we love the tried and true beef pepper lunch and pork pepper lunch (#1 and #2 on their menu). These options allow us to eat and savor the flavors of rice, pepper, meat whose fat is rendered and can be mixed with the rice--resulting in a delicious mixture! Each rice based meal has complementary sauces (one soy sauce based and the other is a bit sweeter). What we love most about Pepper Lunch is that all meals are served on a cast iron type bowl with ridges, plenty of flavor may bloom for whichever meal plan you choose. Regardless of the weather, there rarely seems to be a wait (at least when we visit for weekend lunch) at this location. We plan to return! read more

Its a great place to go to if you're looking for something delicious, fast, asian, and ok priced. I ordered a Curry Beef Rice (Regular size $10.95) and it was yummy!!! The food comes in a sizzling hot pan and its not really cooked so you'll have to stir the meat around for a bit before eating. It was my first time eating something like this, so I just kinda looked at it like "Is the meat suppose to be red? What do I do..?" Also, warning! Its super hot (temperature wise) so beware. I definitely like the seating arrangement and types of seating in the original location on No. 3 Road - since it has booth and table seating and it looks more open. The seating at this location is like a bowling alley, just a long narrow hallway of tables - not as inviting and comforting atmosphere. Other than that, the sizzling sounds of crisping rice and searing meats is always a comforting ambiance. Staff are quick and friendly. My go-to is the Beef Pepper Rice. Thin slices of raw beef surround the mound of rice all on top of a hot cast-iron plate. It arrives in a cloud of smoke and tiny oil jumps at you, and that's your time to start flipping the meats to cook them and pressing your rice onto the plate if you like crispy rice. Once everything is more or less cooked, you have a choice between two sauces: Soy Sauce Based and Brown Sugar Based. I like a little bit of both. This mixed mound of crispy rice, pepper beef, salty/savoury sauce and sweet corn are a perfect, comforting and filling meal on a cold day. They have other options as well if rice isn't your thing - steaks, pasta, fish and veggie options are available too. It's been a long time since I've visited Pepper Lunch. I went to their first location on No 3 Road but this newly opened location at the Central Garden City plaza is more accessible for me so I decided to pop in for dinner. There was a lineup for ordering at the till but it moved by relatively fast. We were told we could take a seat and have a look at the menu and come back to order. We decided to stay in line. We ordered the pepper beef rice for $9.95. It didn't take long to come either. Our meal came out sizzling hot and compared to what I remembered this iron pan maintained its heat longer than before and they added more pepper to this pepper rice. Love that they improved in areas which they were lacking. Not sure if I was hungry or the meal itself wasn't filling but I still felt a bit hungry after devouring all that rice and beef. I really enjoy the corn that comes with it. If you've never been, they also provide two bottles of sauce (one sweet and one savoury). I like to mix my rice with a bit of both. read more

Unfortunately, just because it was good in Japan, doesn't mean it's good in Canada. The ambiance was airport cafeteria and the food quality was abysmal. When we were in Vancouver, we found a location nearby and decided to check it out for dinner! You order and pay first but we didn't realize this and sat down to look at the menu before going up to the counter to order. I went with the Beef Pepper Rice and my boyfriend got the Wagyu Beef Pepper Rice. Our food came out quick since it was pretty empty inside the restaurant. The beef was tender and flavorful and you can also add more sauce if you'd like since it is provided it for you at the tables. You can definitely taste the difference between the regular beef and wagyu beef. Overall, the portions are pretty good for the price and it's tasty too! read more

First off, I'd really like to say that I think this place is more of a 3.5 star, but I rounded up because everyone was really friendly! This location is inside the new Central at Garden City plaza in Richmond, and is the first Pepper Lunch location that I've ever been to! The first thing you do when you get there is order your food at the cashier till, and then you're assigned a table number and they bring you the food and your drink(s). They have a different special item every day that comes with a pop and miso soup. I ordered the Classic Pepper Rice (about $10.50 after tax) which came on a sizzling hot plate. It comes with beef, pepper rice, corn and green onion. When they serve it to you they bring you 2 sauces as well: the honey brown (which tasted similar to a teriyaki sauce) and a garlic soy I believe? I ended up putting a little bit of both in my dish, which was good. I can see how it'd be easy to overcook the beef, so I just turned all the pieces over and when they were cooked to my liking, put them on top of the rice as the sizzling plate cooled a bit! Overall, I enjoyed my meal but it wasn't anything super stellar that blew my mind. Service, food and quality have not faltered over the year which is very commendable (and unexpected). Quality is exceptional and it has become an addiction. Would recommend Pepper Lunch to everyone! Pepper lunch is a good place. Decent ambiance. Waiters and waitresses are attentative and polite. Food is good but not great. And their prices are a little on the higher end for such a "regular" place. I'd give Pepper Lunch a three stars out of five. Decent place for lunch or dinner. But nothing great to wrote home about. The initial excitement of this place has obviously died down since it first launched a couple years ago. But still good for it from time to time.
