O wow, watta place, watta place, watta place! Continuing on my journey to find the best Taqueria in Orange County, my careful google studies, yelp review reading, and stomach hunger lead me to this amazing place.
First thing I noticed about this place, it wasn't another hole in the wall Taqueria... then again, it wasn't a full on Taqueria! This place is actually a restaurant with outdoor seating and a drive thru. You can have burritos, tacos, burgers, tostadas, quesidillas, nachos... the whole shebang. Upon entering, the first thing I noticed was the aroma. It wasn't that pungent beef smell that attacked your nose, it was the a freshly made corn tortilla smell... that attacked your nose! Walking in with my brother, we were surprised to see that the only meats for burritos and tacos were shredded beef, carnitas, and chicken... (which are good meats to judge any typical taqueria IMHO) We ordered the usual - 2 carne asada burritos w/ beans and salsa, and 2 tacos w/ salsa on the side. I heard the the portion sizes were huge so intimidatingly, we just ordered 1 taco for each of us. One was chicken and the other was carnitas.
Walking around the dining room, I was really impressed to see that this place meant business. The floors were clean, there was only one fly that I saw compared to other Taqueria fly families, there's tiles on the ceiling (which was cool), and the tables were cleaned right after use by the staff. The staff was also friendly and accommodating. They offered us 2 restaurant-made hot sauce bottles (after realizing there was no salsa bar), but this place was like a Mexican In-N-Out. You order, they cook, you wait, they call your number, and you get your food. FYI - green hot sauce is better than the red
After a good 7 min. we got our meals. Wow, one word that I can say about their portions - GENEROUS. The tacos were huge compared to your typical Taqueria. They were a good 6 inches er so, stacked on top of another and the meat was falling off the sides of it. The tortillas didn't get soggy by the meat juices and they weren't stuck together either. There was no way you can pick it up without your meat falling off the sides though. The burrito, wasn't long but they were stuffed! These guys literally chopped up my usual 12 oz steak and stuffed it in a tortilla w/ beans. The carnitas taco was a little underseasoned and dry, but the pork flavor was definitely there. The chicken taco was great, moist and had a lemony taste to it. It also had a bold chicken flavor which my brother and I agreed on, "this has to be dark meat...".
After finishing the tacos, we moved onto the gigantic burritos. After taking my first bite, that unparalleled meaty flavor got to me. The refried beans complimented it well, but it wasn't out of your ordinary meat and beans. It wasn't cooked in a vat and you can tell it was chopped up because the beef was literally in multi-sized cubes. It did have a little connective tissue, but what flank steak doesn't? (except Taqueria Escalante...) The real star of this burrito was the salsas. It's honestly indescribable. Ofcourse, it's just tomatoes, cilantro, and onions, but it really stood out from the burrito. It had a real veggie taste and it was not, by all means, outshined by the massive amounts of beef and beans. BTW - they only use 1 tortilla per burrito, a very stable, thick, slightly toasted tortilla which knows how to hold meat juices without soaking through. I was really impressed because I can't even get my homemade burritos to do that. The tortillas were easy to tear with teeth, but the corn flavor was sooo present.
After finishing the best part of the burrito (the last 3 juiciest bites), I was beyond full... Halfway in the burrito, I was full and after downing it with a rockstar, I was full for the next 5 hours (hadda meat coma in my physiology class to prove it...) For a 16 buck meal, it was massively worth it, and honestly I would give it a 4.5 stars. There's nothing bad about this place at all, but it was missing a wow factor in it's flavor. I had better marinated meat in other Taquerias (Taqueria Escalante), but wow if you wanna get full for a bomb price, you definitely go here!
