I am sharing this publicly because I have been without a vehicle since November 8th, and Pep Boys has still not provided a single written update, inspection, or resolution--despite multiple promises from their customer relations team. After Pep Boys Marlow Heights (Store #0073) installed new tires on my 2007 Toyota Camry, my car immediately developed rubbing noises and visible tire damage that did not exist prior to their service. My vehicle has been unsafe to drive ever since. I followed every step they gave me. I contacted them repeatedly. I sent photos, emails, and documentation. I even told them my phone was broken and asked for written communication so everything could be documented. They ignored that and still never reached out. At this point: * My car is undriveable * I've had to move it in unsafe condition just to avoid towing * I've exhausted money paying for storage * Pep Boys closed my case with no resolution * No one from the store or corporate has contacted me in writing * This situation has now reached the BBB and Maryland Consumer Protection Division All I am asking for is a proper inspection, a written explanation, and corrective repairs for an issue that happened immediately after their work. CONSUMER BEWARE GETTING YOUR CAR WORKED ON AT PEP BOY'S @ 4500 SAINT BARNABAS ROAD, MARLOW HEIGHTS, MD 20748. After paying $1,000 to Pep Boys for a diagnostic, spark plugs, and ignition coils about 2 days later the "check engine" light displayed and a new message came on (power system service urgent with 2 red symbols, appeared only after they worked on my car... SMDH!! I had to take my car back twice in less than a month and now my car is worse. 1st time the mechanic said it was the same code but a different reason "emission related need purge valve and evap canister". Then I submitted a complaint, then took my car back a 2nd time. Now, they alleged the same code but reason my check engine light came on again was due to defective parts (ignition coil and spark plug) they put in my car. Plus, the new message that appeared after they did the initial work on my 2008 Volvo, is indicating I need an alternator. Mighty funny the first diagnostic and 2nd diagnostic never indicated nothing was wrong with my alternator but now after they have worked on my car three times less than a month it's a problem now.....WOW!. Again, poor practices!! Although the service manager told me my car would be fixed free of charge the second time, yet the cost of the alternator is on me after they fu$ked my car up! Stating the alternator is unrelated to the warranty work. But the service manager Khalil initially told me that my car would be fixed free of charge was a strategy to get my car there so the mechanic could look at it and come up with a suspected manipulated inspection report. Then the service manager Khalil hit me with the alternator is my responsibility. Ultimately, after I picked up my car, my car cut off less than 15 minutes after leaving Pep Boys and had to get towed to my house. I'm just pissed now my car is parked, must get it towed to another shop and pay more money to get it fixed. Now I'm skeptical if in fact the initial work on my car was necessary and whatever the mechanic did has caused other problems....my overall experience at this Pep Boys location is scam and sham! This location and the manager and mechanics need to be investigated for their practices. Especially if minority women are target consumers for their bad practices. I saw another customer's review regarding being without her car for months due to tire work this location did, another reason why I will continue to get my story out. I will be pursuing the following course of action with BBB and Maryland Consumer Protection Agency, and in any other avenue I can to get my story out in the news. I went to Pep Boys because my check engine light came on and my car had a slight knocking sound after an oil change i received elsewhere. The initial diagnostic showed three codes, including one for the fuel rail - and electrical issue and they recommended replacing the fuel regulator. When I asked for documentation showing that the fuel system or regulator was actually tested, they could not provide any proof--everything was explained verbally only. I later asked them to check if my car had too much oil, test drive it, and see if the codes cleared. Khalil called back told me my car supposedly had 5 quarts of oil and later 8 quarts of oil when i went into the shop to speak f2f, he said they drained it, and performed another oil change - that I did not authorize. And my codes never cleared. I asked for documentation of the post-oil drain inspection, proof of the test drive, and proof that my fuel system had been tested. None was provided. They only provided a work order for services rendered and recommended. The manager Khalil and the big fish with the blonde hair refused to provide documentation that any work was done and later shared i would need to pay an addtnl dx fee of $110. The staff decided to argue me down abt my little car having 8 quarts of oil. I refused to pay for the unauthorized oil change. I was going to pay the dx fee but kept asking for documentation that work was done. They had my car for 48hrs. The manager, Khalil, gave me my key, told me I would not be charged, and told me to leave. I arrived with a check engine light and slight knocking and left with my car still knocking and now shaking. Brought in my Ford Bronco for an oil change, reset TPMS sensors and replace blinker bulb.The staff in the front was polite at the Marlow Heights MD location. The problem I have is that I was given 3 different price quotes. I specified that I wanted an oil change and my TPMS sensors reset or replaced. I received a coupon for the oil change and was told I could use it when checking in. I also told the staff that my passenger side rear blinker was out. The technician tried to tell me that it was not even though I knew it was not working and told them to check again. It was out as I stated. When picking up the vehicle I was told that the TPMS sensors were programmed and working fine. They were not . My tire sensor light was still on and was informed to take my truck to the dealer. Angry I was when I just paid $400 for an oil change and a bulb change and still have to take my vehicle to the dealer!!! A complete waste of my time!!! Had a pretty bad blow out on the beltway Saturday night and needed to get new tires ASAP. Went in without an appointment on Sunday (everybody else was closed or did not have my tire size) and while the wait was a bit lengthy Dwayne did a phenomenal job keeping me updated and was able to get me a deal on a new set of tires. Eddie took care of replacing my tires and conducting a wheel alignment, my car hasn't driven this smoothly in a minute. I'll definitely be back again for any of my auto care needs. read more

On March 11, 2024 I took my car in for 4 new tires that purchased through Pep Boys in Temple Hills, MD, for a couple hundred dollars. 1 mile or so down the road I heard a loud knocking sound from the rear of my car. I eventually found a safe spot to pull over, and had to wait in my car for 3 hours before AAA could assist me, and also had to inconvenience a friend to take me home. My mom had an emergency situation (battery & windshield wipers) this past Friday. We took her car to Pep Boys in Marlow Heights. Duane checked the car in, conducted a diagnostic of the battery, alternator and starter to find out what was the source of her drained battery. Once he discovered that it was the battery itself, he promptly changed the battery (as well as the wipers requested by mom). He was courteous, attentive and very knowledgeable. A complete joke! Took my car in for a diagnosis only to pay $100 and not even get a summary of what was found, recommendations or anything. I was told to takE a picture of the report from the advisor. My mind was blown. I was called in saying my car was ready when it haven't even been looked at. All the advisors were laughing and joking everytime I walked in. I called a few times and I was given an update on other ppl's vehicles. I came here today because my car radio wouldn't cut on and I assumed it was because of a blown fuse. When I came that was the only issue I was having, I went to jiffy lube before coming here and they said they didn't deal with electrical issues but to go to pep boys because they were open and could help me. Anyway, I come and get my car back finally and the trunk light and lower tire pressure gauge is on and I tell the guy that it wasn't on Pryor to me coming and of course like a man he said am I sure as if I wouldn't know, and he said he didn't do anything but check the fuses which were fine. He then took it back to the back to take the fuses out again in which he just kept opening and slamming the trunk closed and then he said with further inspection you have a electrical problem that we can not fix. And he proceeds to walk away. Now but I my is my radio not working but the time is not on, the trunk light and tire pressure light is on, the car doesn't lock using the fob and I can't even open the trunk with out putting the key in the ignition. So my car is worse than it is now and I want answers because this guy was very dismissive and to imply I can't tell whether the lights were on Pryor to me coming to pep boys is a huge insult. I will never bring my car here again! In January I spent $800 to repair a broken belt and a new power steering. I understand my car repair was needed over New Year's weekend but it still shouldn't take 6 days to repair someone's car. Before having my car towed into Pepboys I called to see if someone would be available to look at it. The guy said yes bring it in; however, when I got in and checked in (after waiting in line for 15 minutes) another guy told me it wouldn't be until Wednesday. Yes. Wednesday, it was currently Saturday. I didn't want to spend money on another tow so I decided to let them fix it. I should also mentioned that a verbal fight broke out between the employees who were checking folks in. It was something about stealing another person's tickets and messing with his money. He walked off (with customers in line) and didn't come back for about 15 minutes, smh...lol. I should've taken this as a bad sign but I didn't. The first few days no one called to inform me of the status of my car and every time I called I received a different answer. The waiting room is also filthy with no coffee while you wait. I finally get a call from someone the manager I believe, informing me my car would be ready Thursday. He was actually pretty nice. The next day I came in to pick up my vehicle. I paid $800 for all the repairs. When I picked up my keys and got in my car, I noticed my car was just as filthy as the waiting room. There were no paper floor mats used or gloves. The broken belt that came from my car was also left on the floor of my passenger seat. My steering wheel was griming and had grease all over it. The outside and inside cloth panel of my car door also contained grease fingerprints. I could see the actual pattern of someone's fingerprints, lol. Believe me folks, I couldn't make this stuff up. They got oil or grease on the cloth panel of my door! I was so pissed! I should've came right back in to complain but I just couldn't stand to stay there a minute longer and just wanted to get my car back on the road. I called back the next day to inform the manager about the way my car. He asked me how they could fix the situation. I said you can return some of my money. But he said well you were already given a discount (it was about $50). He said you can bring it back in and we can clean it for you. I decided to pass on that but he offered a feee oil change. Thanks? A week later, my car was still hard to turn so I'm thinking did they forget to put power steering fluid in my vehicle? It seemed possible based on the quality of the work before. So I returned against my better judgement. I'm a harder learner, obviously. They said, yes, your car was low in fluid. So they completed this task and charged me another $50. There goes my previous $50 discount from earlier. So, to make a long story even longer 2 weeks later, still hard to turn. I took it to Merchant's and they diagnosed my problem as a bad rack and pinion which will need replacing. This would cost another $1,200. I gave up and decided to just replace the whole damn car. It was a 2012 by the way. I cant help but think Pepboys ruined my car after the crappy and sloppy way they left my car on the outside. I can only imagine the sloppy work they did on the inside. I will never return to Pepboys again and suggest you do the same. read more

Took my Lexus for a suspension evaluation and was informed my front and rear suspension needed repairs, which total $2000.00 My gut told me to take it to my auto shop I normally take all my cars to, which I have been taking it for years. I had taken my truck into Pep Boys back in May 2017 to get an alignment and was told they couldn't do it because I needed to get my upper and lower control arms replaced to do so. I was also informed that I needed two tires as well. Since I was hitting the road for Memorial Day weekend I wanted to make sure my vehicle was safe to drive so I allowed them to do the work. Fast forward to March 2019, I wanted to get another alignment but was told that I needed to get my upper and lower control arms replaced. Huh??? It hasn't even been two years yet! The parts were covered under warranty but I had to pay for labor. Aight, bet. (Not to mention, I went to drop my truck off and leave my keys in the drop box but there were no envelopes. Smh. I was able to find one in my bag so I was able to drop it off.) I called the next day just to ensure everything was cool and the Manager tells me that they couldn't do the work because they only had one part. (I'm not sure when he was going to tell me!) He said they would have to order the part and that I would have to bring it back in the middle of the week. No problem. So I go pick up my truck and return home only to get a call from the Manager a couple of hours later telling me that they made a mistake and found the part. He asked me if I can return to get the work done? I was pissed, but needed to get the work done so I drove back to Pep Boys. After holding my vehicle hostage for 3 hours they tell me that while they were driving the car out of the bay my axle broke! I asked the Manager to explain to me HOW my axle broke? The Manager's response was "shit happens." I couldn't believe this dude, a MANAGER told me "shit happens." After an intense verbal exchange he proceeded to tell me it would cost an additional $500 to get the axle fixed. I told him I wasn't paying for an axle because I didn't break it! After a 10-minute stand-off he tells me he would only charge me $100 to fix it. Straight robbery! Instead of going back and forth I decided to pay the additional cost. So I get home and receive a phone call saying that they still have my wheel lock key. Needless to say I'm glad I had to return because my alignment was way off! It has been 8 days since this has happened and my front-end is STILL doing the same thing it was doing before I took it in! The blatant disrespect of the Manager and the poor workmanship from this location is horrendous! Pep Boys needs to do some serious revamping of their customer service, training of their mechanics and re-consider using these faulty auto parts! Avoid this place at all costs! read more

I always come here after work and get an oil change and the guys at the service desk generally take good care of me as a customer. I will try to keep this post short and sweet. Yesterday (Wednesday) I went in and thought I would be in and out, I forgot that it was the first of the month. It was very packed and the 2 gentleman Lamar (I believe) and Aaron impressed me with their customer service. It was extremely busy in there and not once did they give attitude or rush any of the customers. Even after paging the manager multiple times that never showed up to assist. We did have a minor hick up that caused a delay in the servicing of my car, once I bought it to Aaron's attention he immediately addressed the concern. I was a bit frustrated and just wanted to leave. But Aaron insisted that he did not want to lose me as a customer and provided me with solutions. Generally on this side of town I typically receive attitude, excuses, and never feel valued as a customer. Aaron went above and beyond to rectify the concern, and I will definitely be back to get the rest of the concerns on my vehicle taken care of. I even referred my coworkers to this location today at our team meeting. Excellent customer service is hard to find. I will admit that not all of the employees offer that level of service at that location, but those 2 gentlemen deserve a WOW, kudos, and recognition! Thank you again Aaron. read more

Had a flat tire and dropped off my car at 9 or 10am and did not get it back until right before they closed at 7pm. The whole thing was a fiasco from start to finish. Went to the check out counter to pay for something from the retail side and had to wait until the cashier finished her long text. She claimed she was sending her boss a picture. Came in with a complicated to put new tires on new rims and replace one tire pressure sensor without knowing which sensor was bad. Any other place would have made me change all four but Mr. Kelly took care of it. They went out of their way to deflate the tires to figure out which one it was, then I came back with a last minute request to mount one of the old tires for a spare and one of the techs, Mr. Gerrod, took care of it right away, Kelly and Gerrod are awesome! 3+ hour wait time for a tire patch up and an AC diagnostic, only to be told our compressor was broke and $1500 was needed to fix it. With a second opinion from a local mechanic, we instead paid $300 to replace damaged wiring, and the fix should have been obvious according to our new mechanic. read more

I arrived well before my appointment time and was told that it was "too late in the evening to take my car for an oil change because staff needed to leave on time, try back tomorrow". One headlight goes out over the weekend. As I am leaving work, I realized that I don't have any headlights. It is dark, so I have to go to the nearest. Thank God for PepBoys! I walk in nearly in tears but the friendliness from the gentleman was golden. they had the headlights that I needed and the price was nice. They only charged $15 for installation. Good deal! ( or so I thought) Then, the night turns for the worst. As I am sitting in the waiting area, I see my car. The mechanic pops the hood and literally starts tugging on parts under the hood. All I needed were new headlights, so why is he tugging? I start to get worried because I can tell tell that he isn't sure about how to put in the headlights. Another mechanic is called over, and now there are two people pulling and tugging on my car. The other young lady and i watched in horror as they pull and tug on the grill of my car. This goes on for 30 minutes. Then, he comes to the waiting room and says "I get off in five minutes, so you will have to come back tomorrow". I am livid because he wants me to drive 20 miles without headlights, and all he can say is "we close at nine". Basically, they stopped working on my car, so they can leave. Needless to say, I had to leave PepBoys and drive over 20miles with my high beams. The kicker is two other people warned me about Pepboys, but the friendliness in the beginning made me think that everthing would be ok. *Total Scam Artist* Using FEAR for profit! I cannot tell you how disappointed I am in the service I received from Pep Boys 4500 St. Barnabas Road in Marlow Heights Md. I'm not even Pissed. More so shocked and sadden of the fact these people made me feel like I had to sell my car because the estimate they gave me was so High! $3560.75 to be exact for a "Check Engine" light issue I had and brought my car in for service. I originally went to Auto Zone for a free diagnostic and they problem codes were P2279 Air Intake System Leak Detected , P1151 Long Term FuelSystem B#1 S#1. I am no mechanic so I then went to PepBoys. I was told that my Turbo Charger on my 2004 VW Beetle needed to be totally replaced or rebuilt. They said this is why my car was loosing power. I called VW to see if a car with only 55k miles would need the turbo charger replaced or if there were any recalls. There were not and the Turbo Charger shouldn't have any problems so early on. I went and got a SECOND opinion. Went to AAMCO where they Fixed the Air Intake Valve, the Intake VAC System and Viola! the problem was fixed for $352.16 which included the testing of the initial problem. Do not trust these people! I got my tires rotated here today for free since i bought 4 tires from them last yr. The staff was friendly however, he told me the whole service should only take about 10-15 mins. I waited about 20 mins until they got my car in and waited another 30 mins for them to finish it. The service is pretty slow. I just received service from Pep Boys yesterday! It was time for new tires and after shopping around to a few places I decided to go to Pep Boys. Mike, the manager, was very friendly and professional in assisting me with my tire selection. He also shared discount promotions so that I would be able to maximize my savings. When I needed a part unexpectedly while my car was being serviced he drove to pick it up right away. Keith was my mechanic and not only did he replace my tires he did a basic check-up on my car sharing updates that were needed. What I appreciate most is that he took the time to explain why I needed this or that and made sure I understood. He also went the extra mile coming across the street to AutoZone to make sure I received my discount for my battery exchange and that it was installed/reconfigured properly. even came over to AutoZone to make sure my battery I will definitely be back for an oil change and alignment next month. *facepalm* The other reviews are right. This place isn't right. I had an issue with my brake about a mile from here, so to save the tow money I dropped it off here. It was probably an hour or two before they closed and I'm last minute so I figured no one would look at it before the next day. I call the next day...I speak with someone who is completely confused as to what's going on, no idea, no record of my car. I then get a call back a couple of hours later from someone different who gives me a breakdown of the repairs and costs as well as sends me an email with the details. He tells me their waiting on a part, but most likely wouldn't start until the next morning ( 2 days in). I explain that I wouldn't get off work in time to retrieve it that evening and would be in Saturday morning (day 3). He says that's fine I'll leave a note, so everyone is on the same page. Saturday arrives...I call my Uber to pick up my car, I arrive and literally NO ONE KNOWS WHAT IS GOING ON! The guy sees no paperwork on my car, there is a key laying on the table, asks me if it's mine?!?! Is there no system in place?! I then have to wait for the manager to get off of the phone...ok. He also doesn't know what's going on, shouldn't these things be recorded in a computer? A spreadsheet? At least written on a sticky note. He then proceeds to tell me that no one called me to say my car would be ready by Saturday. But that they would work on it that evening, and he would drive my car to my house. Great. I guess...he calls me a lyft to work, and tells me I have to figure out how to get home. No really, that's actually what he said to me. Now it's Sunday(day 4) , I was able to go in later, so I call to make sure everything is all set to pick up my car. I don't trust this manager guy, he is not in control. The guy who answers tells me it's NOT ready?! The technician JUST started? He was late to work?! And that he would give me a call when it's complete. Will you really?! This place is so lost. That's what happens with chain companies and corporations, the under-performers get lost in the shuffle. This place is seriously forgotten about. And the service reflects the atmosphere. No one returned my call yesterday...so is my car NOT ready? Day 5...I'm attempting to call the store whose hours on the website as well as over the phone state they open at 730 AM. It's 8 AM, the prompt keeps saying the store is closed and to call back during normal business hours...they have now had my car for 125 hours with no communication or updates. No wait, they have given me updates. False ones though. The manager at this point has lied to me three times so effortlessly. Not a "Hey, we had to push the work back, we're still waiting on a part" nothing. Unfortunately this place will never suffer due to the nature of the business. Finally someone answers and tells me that someone called me yesterday and told me that MY CAR IS NOT READY, THERE IS A ISSUE WITH A PART THEY ORDERED THREE DAYS AGO. MY CAR IS STILL IN THE SHOP. THEY WERE SUPPOSED TO BE FINISHED YESTERDAY. Finally I had a (male) friend who knows about cars call in, and miraculously the car was finished. Day 6... I go to pick up my car, and was helped by a nice gentleman named Lamont. He was baffled by my experience and offered me a "customer service" discount. I'm sure it's a typical process but he was genuinely concerned by my experience and let me know they had a busy weekend. Which was fine, my expectations were only brought on by what was communicated to me by who were apparently the Manager and Assistant manager. My car was sitting in the lot with my doors unlocked for who knows how long... but all seemed fine. This experience was just an unnecessary headache, and I guarantee I'm going to the dealership next time or calling a tow truck and taking my money elsewhere. read more

I wanted to give my mechanic, Leroy, 5 stars. He was friendly, communicated well and kept me fully informed about my vehicle. He finished quickly and got me back on the road. I had to choose 3 stars though because the young woman at check in has no communication skills whatsoever. She is the face of the company when you come in and when you leave which is bad. Maybe she was having a bad day but she was rude to every customer I heard her speak including me. I would take my car to Leroy again but not at this location if I had to deal with her. read more
