Unsafe, dishonest, and negligent service -- avoid this location I had one of the most disturbing customer service experiences I have ever had at Pep Boys Western Avenue, and it centers on one employee: Johnny W. My car was towed to this location because a tire purchased from Pep Boys in September 2024 developed a sidewall bubble, a known safety defect that can cause sudden blowouts. Johnny W acknowledged the tire needed replacement but gave me constantly changing timelines -- first Wednesday, then Friday, then Monday -- without providing any tracking, order number, or real explanation. When I asked for basic order or shipment information, Johnny repeatedly refused to investigate. He told me this was not his normal store and he could not see my warranty in the system. I offered to provide my Pep Boys invoice and warranty by email, and he stated he did not want to "try to figure out the email password" to access it. In other words, he refused to verify a valid Pep Boys warranty even when I had the documentation. I also asked about a store-to-store transfer, since I confirmed the exact tire was available at other Pep Boys locations. Johnny explicitly refused, stating he was not willing to arrange pickup because the tire was "11 miles away." Instead, he chose to order from the warehouse -- the slowest possible method -- leaving me without my vehicle in freezing weather. A manager at another Pep Boys location (Mike at Brickyard Mall) later confirmed that store-to-store transfers are routine and usually take only a few hours, and he personally arranged the transfer that Johnny would not. Johnny was dismissive and uncooperative on the phone and even disconnected my call when I asked for an update. When I later arrived in person with my sister and brother-in-law, his demeanor changed completely -- suddenly my car was ready and the tire had been installed, information he had not previously shared. Johnny also failed to address my seized metal valve caps that prevent adding air to my tires, despite agreeing earlier that this would be inspected. Will Rip You Off, Untrustworthy, 2 things first, I don't really write reviews, whether good or bad service. Second, I had a second car during this time. In 2021, I took a recently used car to them for an inspection. They inspected the car and said I needed to replace the Control Arm, Stabilizer Bar Control Link, the sway bar link, and control arm. I leave and the car seems fine. As before, I have a second car, so I drive one for 1-3 months and switch out cars. In 2023, I hear noises coming from the side of the car that should have been replaced in 2021. I take it back to them and tell them of the issue, they say its a strut issue, so I have them replace the struts. When I left I the noise was worse. I like an idiot, believed them and the car was safe to drive. Now in 2025 I get a noise from the tire on the other side and decided to take it to a new mechanic. I asked the new mechanic to find the new noise, and let me know what the noise I was hearing on the parts that should have been replaced in 2021. When they look at it and show me. Pep Boys put on a used fiberglass control arm, when the other side was metal. It looked like they didn't replace the sway bar link and bushings. What they did was take the old ones I had and use them to attach the fiberglass control arm. The reason I believe this is that there is no way I could have destroyed the sway bar link and bushings in 4 years, as these were destroyed. Long story short I had to replace the control arm with a metal one, I got new sway bar links and bushings. Please don't trust these people with your car if you value your car. They may charge you for new parts and use used ones. They let me leave their shop knowing my care wasn't fixed correctly. Go somewhere else. read more

We had an emergency situation with brakes on our car on route to Chicago. We called this Pep Boys and Heriberto gave us a quote and asked us to bring in the car. All the service agents were very friendly. A diagnosis was made to determine the problem and we decided to get it fix. They were very pro and informed us with updates of the repair. We left and could immediately feel the difference. The problem was solved. We were given warranties and the job cost less than expected. We will definitely come back to this location for repair. Additional light can on after 1st visit & (1) windows stopped working. Pricing jumped from $388 to an additional $1,100.00. Just hope the work holds up? My son came to this pep boys in Cicero Illinois all excited that he has purchased a car. He wanted to installed a new radio. The stores charges him a lot of money to it. One day I drove the car and all the lights started going crazy. Then all the lights in the dash board shot down. I am like Lord please let Me make It home sure enough I got home than I could not shot the lights off am like great. It was raining and cold. How am I going to turn off the lights? What I had to do was to unplug the battery so it wouldn't die on me. Next day I take it to the mechanic and they told me pep boys had I talked the radio cables in the wrong place all the el trivial wire system had burned down. That thank God the car did NOT BLOW up with me on it. The car stayed in the mechanic until a food electrician has to come and repair the damages pep boys had made! In the mean time before goin to the mechanic I stopped at auto zone and they told me PEP BOYS installed the wires in the wrong place the person who had help me to unplug the battery was a mechanic and said señora who ever I talked this radio put the wires and connected them in the fuse box. I was so mad that the car stayed in over a week to fix the pep boys mistakes. Plus not to think the $500.00 repair from the mechanic and part from auto zone. Let me start off by saying I'm writing because I been on hold for 56 minutes and counting I will hang up when I'm done writing. I had a 10 am appointment. They did not have me in the system or the new guy didn't know how to pull it up. I'm assuming he was new because he ask the manager how to do it. Went in for 4 new tires, was quoted $600+. I asked her how much are the tires $119 each. Ask the lady I thought it was buy 3 get 1 free. It will take out at the end when you checkout. When I got done it was $600+. I told the male cashier I thought it was cheaper. He said there wheel alignment charge which I didn't ask for. He tried to called the lady person, wasn't able to. So he took the charge off. It still came out higher than the advertisie price of $357 plus tax. There was an tire service of $84. I thought the installation was free. I would not go here for service. I came to get a routine oil change and was told I had an oil leak. I then had to go get my engine steam cleaned for $50, and come back and pay $40 for a UV leak test. They told me my oil pan was dented and that was why it was leaking. The still charged me for an oil change and then recommended I go somewhere else for the parts. I drove all the way to my hometown mechanic in Iowa, who told me there in fact wasn't a dent or single thing wrong with my oil pan, and that instead Pepboys had not sealed the oil valve/plug properly the previous oil change and that's why it was leaking. He said the plug was about to come apart which would've ruined my engine. He also went to do a new oil change and told me my oil was absolutely filthy, indicating that I had just paid for an oil change at Pepboys 3 weeks prior that was never actually done. Every time I call to get more information, the line is either disconnected or they tell me they're going to check the cameras to see what happened, which has yet to be done. I just drove all the way here as I was promised a refund by the manager, but that was another waste of my time because he said they can't refund me in the store and they'll have to submit it to claims (which I know will take weeks). Took my car In for a regularly scheduled oil change. The worker was nice but when I left my car check engine light came on. I called up to the shop and no response. I tried several times to get a hold of someone and even called the customer service line. They filed a claim and said someone would get back to me. No one ever did and I had to take my car to the dealership where it was diagnosed my oil valve needed to be replaced. We dropped off the car the night before, and called many times (and were put on hold for long periods) the scheduled day to see when it would be finished. After 4 phone calls that day they finally told us that the appointment had been cancelled, and they did not have the tires we ordered. They found other tires that would fit and kept the car an additional day to finish it. When my daughter picked up the car, the price was ~ $100 more than we were told on the phone. All staff at this location need customer service training on phone etiquette. Today, I was put on hold 6 times in 2 hours and each time (different staff) I called staff would say hold please, not wait for a response, and then abruptly put me on hold. This is not the way placing customers on hold should work. Was abruptly put on hold (as described above) and gave up each time after 10 min, 10 min, 6 min, 4 min and 11 min and finally called regular customer service to avoid getting placed on hold abruptly without being allowed to speak. Again, like my first experience I don't feel like anyone had looked at it until I started inquiring. Was told it would be ready by this evening and that they would call me. I am not going to hold my breath for said call. I usually go to Parkview Automotive (further N. on Western Ave.) they always pick up and return calls and their time estimates are on point. Louis, the staff member at the desk, kept me updated on the progress of the vehicle and he matched the price on a replacement for tires that were out of stock in the store. He went above and beyond. I'm just taking off one star because the service took a few hours. They get really busy, so I would recommend servicing your vehicle when you don't have to be anywhere. This is by far the worst place to replace tires. Big mistake to choose this shop. Showed up 10 mins before appointment, got everything ready to go. Was told it is going take about an hour, so I decided to wait. Ended up waiting 2 hours and 50mins. And the even worse part is staffs and managers act like nothing happens at all. I had new back tires put on a year ago. A year later, front tires were needed. Went to the shop asking for the same brand of tires put on the back for the front. After about a week of driving through the cold and snow, my front tires were leaking multiple times, one time going from 34 PSI to 16 in a 24HR period. Upon looking, no new front tires were on, but the back looked fairy new ... go to the Crestwood Illinois shop (again), asking about the tires.They state that we asked for back tires only, and they did rotate tires (even though no indicator was on the paperwork and receipt that should be). Continued to belitte my husband who is a mechanic that they did their job correctly, even though he showed them the dry rot the front tires had, and stating that if they did their job right putting back tires on and rotating, the year old new tires on the back wouldn't have been STOLEN from us. after many blank stares and lies, we were finally told management would call. No one has yet to call. Do NOT trust these thieves. Terrible service here. Had my car brought over here and the said they would call. No one called after 24 hours of my car being there so I called and the female on the phone was so rude? I figured she was annoyed because of a bad day but she definitely was not using her customer service skills. I was told I'd be called "tomorrow" for an update with a mechanic. So the mechanic never called, and I called the day after the mechanic was supposed to call me. The mechanic did not work weekends. Another person then told me they can't fix it. I got warranty for road assistant and the associate didn't give me any paper or tell me to go on a sight to further register for roadside assistant. Pepboys on 5959 S. Western Ave I'm a student and work as a server at the suburbs which means I take long commutes. As a result, I always trust the team at Pepboys to ensure my car is in optimal shape. In fact, over the last 3 years as a customer, the auto repair team here has truly delivered transparency and great customer care. For instance, two days ago I had an issue with my oil pan due to a previous oil change. I brought in my Honda around 9 am and Sam, the customer representative, acted valiantly and solved the problem while assuring me that my schedule would not be compromised due to this mishap. The team even took the time to take me to their garage and explain the problem; customer service does not get any better than this.
