Bought a Groupon ($14 for a tour for two, full beer each, glass, and growler unfilled). Signed up for the tour no problem on their website two days before. When we arrived on Saturday for our tour, I was a bit worried. At 2:30, there were maybe three cars in the parking lot. Walked in, sat at the bar, and decided to try a flight (four 4 oz pours for $12 is a little expensive when it comes to flights) but all of the beers were fabulous. We tried to Raspberry Dubbel, the Session Sour, the Wild W4, and one of the IPAs on tap. Everything was excellent, my boyfriend and I both loved the W4. Tour time! We got a "walking" beer included in the tour price (regularly $10). I chose the Coffee Tripel and was instantly hooked. The tour was informative, the guide was very personable and took time to answer questions. I always enjoy brewery tours and I especially enjoy the ones where the guide takes time to point out what makes their setup and thought process different than everyone else. After an hour, we were brought back into the tap room and it was full! The crowd was lively, people were playing board games and ordering in pizza, it really is a great space to hang out. We grabbed a growler of the Coffee Tripel to go and enjoyed it during the Super Bowl last night. I definitely suggest coming here for the tour and then hanging out for a while. The brews are all excellent and the tour is definitely one of the better/more informative experiences out there. read more

We were part of the first "groupon" tour, meaning we were the first group to buy a groupon for the offered brewery tours. With a $15 groupon, you got a tour for 2 people, one beer each to enjoy while on the tour, and one souvenir Penrose tulip glass and an empty growler to take home. The check-in process was really easy. We pulled up our groupon and they found our names on a printed out list. We each got wristbands for the tour and afterwards, they cut the band off of you and gave you the glass and growler. The tour itself was quite informative. Rob, our guide, really knew the beer making process and about Penrose specifically. You'll be allowed back into the area with the stills and bottling equipment. The only downside of the tour was that my beer ran out before it was over! After the tour, we decided to fill the growler with Spectral, their porter, for around $16, i think. We were starving, so we left to forage for dinner, but otherwise we would have stayed and hung out in the taproom. There are ab unch of board games for patrons to use (everything from Cards Against Humanity to Life to Guess Who?). They don't serve food, but the do allow delivery to the tap room, and you can eat there at long tables while enjoying Penrose beer. I really wished we lived closer. If so, I know we'd be here often. read more

Love having this brewery by us! Not only are the beers are delicious but it's just a relaxed, pleasant atmosphere. Being a new mom, I love that we can come here and enjoy a beer and see it filled with other families. They really accommodate families. They have board and card games so that you can socialize with friends and family and I loved that they had a nice changing table with diapers and wipes (I guess it's the little things that make a difference when you have a baby ). read more

I'm torn on this place. Great little brewery, I love going in on a weekday when they are dead and talking with the servers, its a very comfortable place. The only thing i have against this place is the one thing that it sells, the beer! They are in no way bad, but i'm disappointed that none are really worth while. I have now had 12 of their beers and not one has made me want to order a second! Fractal, Raspberry Dubbel and some others are decent, but most are just boring. I still keep holding out for more flavorful beers and keep going back (maybe the barrel aged will be good) but honestly you might as well go to Two Brothers or Solemn Oath. read more

Went here last Saturday. Doesn't look like much from the outside, but the inside has an industrial, polished feel to it. Very well done. This place specializes in Belgian style ale's, so is different than most other breweries in the area, which is refreshing to see. Penrose adds their own twist to many of them, like the Raspberry Dubbel, or White IPA (think witbier with a large dose of Cascade hops). If you are looking for authenticity, the Saison stays pretty true to style. Overall a good change of pace from the typical hops forward beer lineups that dominate the Chicago craft beer scene. read more

Great Tap Room... I liked everything about it! They did the interior space the right way/ no expense was spared. Great spare concrete bar top/ nice vintage tables in the bar room/ cool little flight racks/ great fixtures/ wonderful interior paint! The beer is phenomenal and heavy on Belgians but they do have quite a few other brews to choose from here. Tucked into the end of a small industrial complex in Geneva, they are usually packed but def worth the trip! Gonna be great in the fall/winter! get dat did read more

Just point to a beer and we'll find a good one. Amazing selection. Stouts and Katie's Campfire (red ale) are my favorites. Goofy Boot Experimental is a classic citrus, summer beer. read more

Amazing tour! My husband loves beer and we have been on many a beercation. I always go into tours thinking, " You've been on one tour, you've been on them all." Kinda of true ... But, our tour guide, Don was amazing. He was informative and hilarious. I really enjoyed the saison (notes of passion fruit, grapefruit, and guava) and their stout (caramels and toasted almonds/coconuts, and the bourbon taste is nice too). My husband really enjoyed the IPA. It's a cool concept that you can have food delivered to the property. FYI- plastic only for payment. read more

Today was my first experience at Penrose Brewing Company, and I was there for a special event held with Niche, Bien Trucha, and Preservation Bread and Wine. The event was a lot of fun, and part of it was that you got to try two glasses of Penrose Beer. My husband and I tried four different beers between us, and found all of them to be good. I personally really liked the Loka (sorry if my spelling is off), and another that had grapefruit undertones- though that one was too fruity for my spouse. The space is great for a brewery, great bar and numerous tables, and there are two different rooms- though the second was set up just for today I would imagine. As of now, no food- just beer here on a regular day- but definitely worth a trip. I hope they continue to grow and expand- they have the marketing information down for sure! read more

I found Penrose on groupon and included it in a beer tree gift. I was lucky to go along to check the place out. Our tour guide was enthusiastic and knowledgeable. The tour wasn't very long, because it's a smaller brewery, but it was a great experience none the less. The beer they serve is not my personal favorite, but I'd come back again. They have a nice sized taproom and they have board games as well. If you're in the area it's definitely worth stopping in. read more

The decor is modern rustic with distressed wood throughout and accents of metal. The seating is picnic table style with several seats at the bar. Generally you can find a spot to sit and people are willing to share a table. The beer selection is amazing and the bartenders are friendly and attentive. They have a few regular beers always available and a nice rotation of new beers to try. My favorite is the Session Sour, while my fiance prefers the Taproom IPA. You can bring home anything on tap in a growler, but they also have select beers available in cans and bottles. There isn't any food, but you can bring in your own food or order food for delivery. They also bring in local food trucks on select Fridays and Saturdays. They also are available for events. We just had our bridal shower here and it was amazing! They were accommodating and did a great job setting up the barrel room! Everyone commented on how nice it looked and how delicious the beer was! Definitely would recommend this place to pick up some beer to go, for a casual hang out, or a special event! read more

We visited via Groupon's Penrose Brewery Tour Experience, which included two beers, one glass, and a growler. We arrived early, checked in, and grabbed our beers. The tap room has a good vibe and is decorated in an industrial style - I've seen this in other taprooms and think they go well together. The tour itself was on the shorter side, but I walked away having learned some really interesting facts about the Penrose history, operations, and brewing in general. The guide was, friendly, personable, passionate about beer, and very open to questions. Another interesting tidbit is that Penrose, much like airline flight attendants, does not accept cash. This didn't bother me, but I found it oddly interesting that they have this policy. All in all a great experience. My only disappointment was that the giveaway glass. I thought it was cool that Penrose uses snifter glasses, but I was disappointed not to have gotten the full color version used in the taproom, but instead one with a smaller, one color logo. Lastly, I didn't see where the bike parking was located, but I'm looking forward to making Penrose a pitstop on a future ride. read more

Loved this place! Atmosphere is great, friendly service and a few games to keep you occupied. There were some great beer selections as well. While we were there one of their wild beers won first place at a Chicago beer fest. We'll definitely return and recommend this place. read more

Great beer and great vibe! Nice to find a small brewery that offers a wide beer selection not only limited to hoppy IPAs. Beers on tap during our first visit ranged from a tasty saison to a sour "mystery beer" that matched well with their raspberry dubble. There were IPAs on tap for those who prefer heavy hops. The tasting room is super comfortable with both bar seating and picnic tables. BYOF (bring your own food) is encourages. Plenty of games to play while you kick back and enjoy the beer. Bartenders are very friendly and welcoming. No pretension here. They only take credit and debit so come prepared. Will be back! read more

Great beer and tour, thanks to Groupon (yes, I'm a Groupon fanatic). Only thing, I wish they had more people working the bar/room waiting to get a drink reminded me of a college bar trying to flag down a bartender. read more

Real good brewery...near the fox river bike trail. Typically more to the hop side of brews but usually have something for the non-hopheads. read more

Great place and fun atmosphere! There are plenty of places to sit and hang out with friends. It does get loud in there, so if you go for a tour, be sure to listen up for the start time- we missed it but were able to join in 15 minutes after it started. The beer is good and fun to taste. Will definitely be going back and have already referred friends to check them out! read more

Fantastic joint to grab a locally crafted brew. Super friendly staff, all knowledgeable about beer. Always a good variety of beers on tap from sours and IPA's to black ales there's something for everyone. read more

As soon as you walk into this taste room, you know you are experiencing something unique. A trendy atmosphere and a friendly staff. These are guys that are excited about their beer. As they should be... it is great beer. I look forward to visiting these guys often! Couple things that I think bring this place to another level. First, it isn't a restaurant...It is a tasting room. There is nobody nagging you about ordering food. Perfect. Also, there are not any annoying flat screen tvs. You actually have to talk to the person you are with (a wild concept these days) AND enjoy the great beer they have. And of course talk to the person you are with about the great beer they have. Also, ask the staff where the name came from. You will see that these people are serious about their beer. read more

Beer great but the curly haired bartender is rude and waited for ever for a second round. Would never recommend going while henj

A pretty boring modern dayb rewery nothing like an old house bar neighborhood tavern experience. There is no decoration and only a selection of bad brewed beer these newer breweries are known for. The picnic decor and seating is typical what one comes across these places and this place is in an industrial zone far away from most everything else in this town yet can't even serve as a hidden gem of a neighborhood tavern. Penrose Brewing - Delicious. - Breweries Near Me - Geneva, Illinois

Great local brew house. Good beers on tap and a fun place to enjoy an evening.

Great beer, great atmosphere and way more safety conscious than other breweries out here. Woman with the black hair working up front was knowledgeable and had a passion for the brews. Definitely adding to my recommendation list. read more

Cool place with good beer! Very crowded and limited seating on a Friday evening. I am wondering if when it gets nice out they open the doors and spread out more. They also had a shuffle board but no room to play due to the crowd. Will definitely be back again! read more

It's finally open! Geneva gets its very own Beer Brewer. So, what is different about a brewery tasting room versus a bar? Well 1) There is a limit to how much beer you can sit and drink (although, I didn't hit that limit and I am guessing it is pretty high because I had a fair amount of beer) 2) There is no food. However, if you want to order some stuff, like pizza from Aurelio's in Geneva, you can have it delivered there. Also, there are some more ideas for food coming over the next few months, so check with Penrose. 3) There are no TVs. That's right, you gotta pay attention to the people you came to drink beer with. If that's a bummer, well, then change your friends, right? 4) It has a cool vibe. 5) There is limited production and sometimes they might run out of a particular type of beer that day. I know, Bud Light never runs out, right? Well, if you like Bud Light, then maybe this whole craft brew idea isn't really what you are looking for anyway. Come here with some friends and order a couple flights or just order a few big glasses of beer. Bring your credit card or debit card or Google Wallet card or whatever, because THEY DON'T TAKE CASH. Four stars instead of five because the music volume overwhelms the speakers. I heard a few people mention the vibrating, sort of tinny sound the speakers get when the volume is up. And, the volume has to be up because it is a loud room. I would say upgrade the speakers and this would be a 5-star place. read more

I had been researching breweries in the Chicago area due to a road trip that would only allow 1 night in the area. I had read amazing things about Penrose and was very intrigued. Making the choice to go to this newer brewery in the suburbs was a great choice. We made it an hour before they closed, the staff was very friendly and helpful. We tried all the beers with 2 flights. Everything was delicious and I had to walk away with quite a few bottles and cans. The brewing mural inside is great, showing the process from grain to tap. The design of their brand and tap room really worked well! Hope to go back next time I'm in the area read more

Came here two years ago for my bday for a Groupon. Everyone enjoyed the lil tour. They had a few beers. They were ok. Then I had a few of their beers at local bars around st Charles. Wow. Vector was amazing. Stevens St beer was great. I eventually stopped in to fill my growler and the lady there was very welcoming and educated in the beer. Since 2 years ago I must say Penrose does not stop innovating. They continue hard on working at their beers. Unlike some breweries that remain stagnant. Aka Two Brothers. Penrose my favorite local beer. They are making a good run at half acre and lagunitas! Keep up the great work! read more

The owners have succeeded in creating a great place to just hangout with friends and drink beer. There is a TV but the set-up is about talking or playing board games with friends. The bartenders are very knowledgeable and will provide tastes of the different beers. It is a great community atmosphere and it is a stone's throw from Geneva Vikings' home games. There is a large variety of beers to cover a lot of tastes. My wife loves the sours and there are hoppy and non-hoppy beers. I like the proto but I do try the new ones. The food truck schedule is on their website but you can bring in your own. The picnic tables allow for sharing of food as well as friendship. Cheers to the owners!! read more

Our beers were great! Had the cherry tricycle stout and another that had eggnog flavor. Always a fan of their beer. The brewery tour was very fun and educational. Did not know all those things prior and now it helps me determine the right beer for me read more

Pretty tasting room! I am a chemist with lots of experience with home brew and I could not get enough of their wall art. I loved the depiction of the brewing process with the chemical reactions written out. My husband (also a chemist) and I discussed the transformation of humulone to isohumulone at length, as one does. I looooved the beer. I am a fanatic for wild fermentation and sours, so this place is perfect for me. I had a flight of Wild 18, Devoir, their holiday sour, and some rotating sour that I have forgotten the name of, but I think was related. We also tried the coffee and chestnut navette and my husband had something else that I have also forgotten. He's more of an IPA fan. Wild 18 was definitely my favorite. I wanted to get a growler of it, but they don't sell it in growlers :(. I guess I should be happy b/c if they did, it would probably have sold out before I got to try it. Everything else was very good, except Devoir, which was just good (very light bordering on watery, though it did grow on me a bit). The bartender was fantastic - I was having a little bit of trouble deciding between a few beers for my flight and she volunteered some that were to my taste, based on the selections I had already made. Great service! You can also BYOF, which we totally did. I see from other reviews that there's a grill sometimes? Maybe we'll come back then :) They have shuffleboard! We love bars with shuffleboard. But the table wasn't being taken care of very well and the pucks didn't glide, so we didn't play for very long. Put some sand on that board and we will come back to play and drink! They also have some board games in the corner for patrons to use. It's the kind of place that definitely has that vibe. I would love to spend an afternoon there. My only complaint is that the flight is so much more expensive than a single beer... 12$ compared to 6 or 7$ for the same volume. It seems like a little bit of a rip off, but I ordered it in full knowledge. Next time, I'd just get a single beer. read more

If you're into IPA's and sour beers you will need to check this place out. It's in industrial building, but not hard to find like Two Brothers or Solemn Oath. The space is pretty sparse, it's a warehouse building with a bar, a cement floor and some picnic tables. You aren't coming here for the atmosphere, you're coming here for the beer. I've had several Penrose beers that I've enjoyed, but when we went there was basically just several different IPA's and several different sour beers. I really wish there had been more of a variety in the styles of beers. I tried a couple of different IPA's and they were good, I hate sour beer, so that eliminated about half the beer menu for me. They don't accept cash, only credit cards or debit cards and there is no food. Overall a decent place, I just wish they had a little more variety in the types of beer they offer. read more

I'd never even heard of Penrose until we took a trip down to Geneva and happened across it. The brewery is tucked away on a small industrial strip off from a lovely residential neighborhood, but it's worth looking for: the tap room is spacious, friendly (lots of people chatted with us, and they let us play card games for hours), and it's got a nice layout and some lovely art. The beer itself is outstanding, especially the sours and wild ales, and you can get a full tasting flight for about $12. You can also, of course, get stuff there that will probably never find its way to your local liquor store. One of the better breweries I've visited lately. read more
