Lots of rough edges here, but I'm hoping that, like Two Brothers in Warrenville, this place will polish up nicely. The room is kind of industrial, with lots of wooden picnic benches, concrete bar, and galvanized pipe doo-dads. Very echoey, too. The beer, so far, is limited to a couple of lighter ales - a "Belgian" ale (Proto Gradus) and P-2, a "Belgian" pale ale, as well as a couple of black ales. As a bit of a beer nut, I've had my share of Belgian ales -- including a lot of craft versions from this side of the Atlantic. I have to say the Penrose version is not quite Gold Medal ready. The black ale was better, and I wish I had tried the "Coffee Navette" -- the higher alcohol scared me off that one, I'm guessing it's higher alcohol because of higher gravity and that means a little more substantial taste, too. They offer growlers, but not on every beer. They don't offer food, apart from some pretzel rods stuck in a mason jar on the table, but you can order in. I really enjoyed my visit to Penrose earlier this week. Met a buddy who lives in the area (I don't) for a couple after work and look forward to a return trip. A good comparison is Solemn Oath in Naperville, and while I work close to that establishment, would choose to drive out to Penrose if asked which I'd go to next. The selection isn't vast, but that's good and the seven options is more than are usual. I enjoy IPA's and similar brews, and their P2 was good-recommend it to anyone with similar tastes. Served at a good temperature-not exactly 33 degrees but such that from first drink to last was enjoyable. I also had the Proto Gradus, a lighter Belgian Ale and enjoyed that as well. The description of yeast forward per their description was apt, but as it's lighter, it trails off and there is little to no aftertaste or heaviness thereafter. Now that I sound like a craft beer poseur in my attempt to describe two beers that I recommend and would drink again soon, I'll move on to the place itself. Good atmosphere-bar stools at the bar that are spread out and a few tables with what I understand is reclaimed wood from other breweries as bases. Not a huge crowd on a Wednesday evening, but that is just fine with me. The two servers that we interacted with were friendly, attentive and professional. We came here after purchasing a Groupon online. His places is tucked away what looks more like a vacant area vs. downtown Geneva, but still very close to everything. Inside the place was fairly large, with a tv playing in the background. Servers were very knowledgeable about the beers and let us try things before we picked ours. In the winter months, there isn't much to do...at least not outside. I have now realized there are several breweries in the surrounding suburbs that I didn't know about which you can go and do a tour & have a tasting...it's the perfect thing to do on a weekend afternoon! It's 5 O'clock somewhere, right?! I stumbled upon a groupon for this place when groupon was having a 20% off sale - the deal included a tour for two, a beer each, an empty growler and tulip glass. Sweet deal for sure. It said the tour lasted 45 minutes...I'd say our entire time there lasted 45 minutes, but that was fine. I have been on plenty of brewery tours elsewhere, and once you see one...you've pretty much seen them all. The tour was about 20 minutes, though informative. This place is just a few blocks north of downtown Geneva/State Street. It's very easy to find. They are credit/debit only AND...they take volunteers to pack their cases and pay in beer, be sure to check their facebook page if that is of interest to you. read more

Only been here once, but some takeaways: This place is creative with its beer -- beets, hay, all kinds of stuff gets mixed in. I had the hay beer, which was ...I really don't know how to describe it. Good? Kind of reminded me of being outside in the country on a crisp fall day. The beer list seemed to lean more toward sours, which aren't exactly my thing. But if that's your thing, you'll probably be pretty happy. There's plenty of seating with big, bench tables. There are also a ton of games, so you can hang out for a bit. There was a table version of curling -- like, a smooth waist-high deck with sand and weights you can competitively slide from end to end. Did a tour today...so worth it. We went on a groupon, four of us for $29 and each got one beer ($6x4=$24) plus two growlers and a coupon for a discount at CA pizza kitchen in Geneva. The tour was full, and it was 50 minutes. We learned stuff and asked some questions. Our tour guide was chill and very informative. We each tried a couple beers: Citra Wheat, Sour session and the Grapefruit Radler. The Radler took a long time to drink, the sour is shocking at first but ends up easy to drink and the Citra was everyone's favorite. The crowd was super diverse. There were home brewers, cyclist in for a break, families with their kids playing board games, a bunch of 30 somethings out for a nice afternoon and anything in between. Everyone was relaxed and just out to have a fun afternoon...games, beers and socializing. No food truck today, but man, that would take the cake...good beer with some snacks. Don't fear on your way in, this is an industrial park, but Penrose provides a cool reprieve in this northern part of Geneva. I would go again, I will go again, and I will support an informative and creative local brewer. read more

I had only a few minutes but stopped in on a Friday afternoon 4pm-ish. It was busy!! Good looking crowd of beer junkies I suspect...I was in and out in 10 minutes. I sampled a new brew I was just gonna order but was given the opportunity to try it first. Kudos to that bro cause that brew was not my jam! I ordered another on a whim, skipped the taste test but it was delicious! Savoring that for a few minutes I decided to get a to-go 4 some. I picked my own selections and had a custom made memory to enjoy later...hopefully for longer than 10 minutes but who knows... Don't sleep on this chill lil hideaway! Big fan of Penrose Brewery! The P2 is the classic flavor here, but I'd recommend the IPA even if you don't typically enjoy them. The IPAs don't cost any more than the lighter offerings. However prices in general are on the more expensive side but hopefully that will change with scale. Food is available outside on Friday/Saturday nights. The thing I can't stand is people who say, "I don't like Penrose". In reality, they don't like Belgian beer. If you don't like white ales it's not going to taste great, but I hope you still give it a try. The only negative about the actual brewery is that the pours are sometimes too foamy. We've always liked the brewery but I have to say they are the most covid conscious place we have been to. I real appreciate their effects to keep everyone safe. When Illinios opened up breweries, this was the first place we went to. We felt safe then and continue to feel safe every time we go. Now about the beer! So good. Came for a drink and a tour last Sunday and really enjoyed it! I had a very strong (7%) IPA and was very buzzed for the tour. The facility is super clean and the staff is laid back. Came in during a slow time so had a little bit of time to take in the place for what it was during non peak hours, because of that I think we had a different vibe and thus here's this review. Very nice and clean. Great seating for many people! Lots of games to choose from which is always nice for a Brewery! Beer tender was okay. My fiancé and I were the only ones there and there was at least two people, one behind the bar, the other seemed like he worked there, as he would step behind the bar, but I couldn't be for sure. My husband and I are beer aficionado's (him more than me, but I'm getting there) and we went in on a Sunday. Order a flight of 3 I.P.A's and something else. All four were really good but the Vector was outstanding! If we weren't headed to another brewery I would have had another. Amazing! The staff were so friendly and very cool. We were told as we ordered our beers that a bicycle group of maybe 150 riders were going to be there soon so we grabbed the 2 chairs at the bar and ordered quickly. Ha The group came and the staff handled it all beautifully and still had time for us. Without a question, we will definitely be back. Probably on one of our many bike rides out there. Only disappointment is there is no outside terrace to kick back and enjoy the beautiful weather with the wonderful beers. read more

This is a really neat brewery off the main downtown strip of Geneva. They have a great variety of craft beer to try, most of which was really interesting to learn about. Their bar area is also really nice; there's a large area for lounging with groups of friends, board games to pass the time, and a shuffle board table. Bought a Groupon ($14 for a tour for two, full beer each, glass, and growler unfilled). Signed up for the tour no problem on their website two days before. When we arrived on Saturday for our tour, I was a bit worried. At 2:30, there were maybe three cars in the parking lot. Walked in, sat at the bar, and decided to try a flight (four 4 oz pours for $12 is a little expensive when it comes to flights) but all of the beers were fabulous. We tried to Raspberry Dubbel, the Session Sour, the Wild W4, and one of the IPAs on tap. Everything was excellent, my boyfriend and I both loved the W4. Tour time! We got a "walking" beer included in the tour price (regularly $10). I chose the Coffee Tripel and was instantly hooked. The tour was informative, the guide was very personable and took time to answer questions. I always enjoy brewery tours and I especially enjoy the ones where the guide takes time to point out what makes their setup and thought process different than everyone else. After an hour, we were brought back into the tap room and it was full! The crowd was lively, people were playing board games and ordering in pizza, it really is a great space to hang out. We grabbed a growler of the Coffee Tripel to go and enjoyed it during the Super Bowl last night. I definitely suggest coming here for the tour and then hanging out for a while. The brews are all excellent and the tour is definitely one of the better/more informative experiences out there. read more

Being a new mom, I love that we can come here and enjoy a beer and see it filled with other families. They really accommodate families. "Let me rate this place low because they don't make the kind of beer I like" What kind of entitled ass suburbanite shit is that? I'm just going to start rating all breweries here low because they don't make my preferred West Coast style IPAs and instead make boring Midwest IPAs, that's logical! I've been wanting to check out Penrose, so when a Groupon popped up, my partner in crime bought it. I didn't even have to whine. Score! My current goal in life* (besides solving world hunger, of course) is to get him to drink a sour without making Malort face. Penrose makes some quality brews (specifically that tart saison) that are almost the training wheels he needs to eventually graduate to the Russian River sour I'm anxiously hoarding. He wasn't quite on the same page as me, but I wasn't quite on the same page as everyone who loves Fractal. It happens. Still, we enjoyed some beers before, during and after the tour and I like what they're doing over there. My issue, my only issue, comes from the clientele. I understand places have regulars. I understand how annoying it is to have cheap groupon users come in and intrude on your precious brewery. I understand that everyone knows your name and life story so us peasants are lucky to have a seat. What I don't get is why you feel the need to roll your eyes and laugh and make snide comments under your breath when you are a customer, just like us. We were there an hour before the tour started. We stayed about an hour after it ended and we strayed from the tour to get a refill. I don't need some bullshit attitude from dude and his wife, nor do the bartenders need to go "the Grouponers will be gone in a minute and we can all enjoy ourselves again" when I just want to drink some beer and figure out how we can incorporate this as a stop in the future. We might live in Pilsen, but we're all about supporting quality breweries and I can guarantee the next time we're headed to Solemn Oath, we'll be stopping here too. I shouldn't complain too much though, because as I mentioned above, we left the tour to buy another beer and I decided to hang out at the bar before the mob swarmed in for growler fills. Homie don't play that group bs either. I'm just not in the process of making sure people know how much disdain I have for them, unless of course they push me. Pushing for beer means these little gloves come off. Overall, I really liked the brewery and while not everything we tried was up my alley, I can appreciate that they definitely know what they're doing when it comes to brewing. Walking into Penrose I was immediately reminded of some of my favorite rustic chic taprooms in Colorado which was a total bonus for them. Unfortunately, the cool vibe and the memories don't help that the beer is not my style. I usually go for heavier IPAs, pale ales, stouts, porters, or even other styles with a lot of citrusy hops to give them kick. Penrose has a lot of Belgian style brews and lighter styles that just aren't my bag. I didn't think any of the beers were bad...it's just I wish they had something with higher IBUs. Most of them have citrus flavors or aromas though, so I liked that. The closest I came to something I'd normally grab was the Belgian IPA IV or the Desirous...both were pretty good and had nice citrusy kicks to them with a decent amount of hops. I'd like to come back in the Fall or Winter to see if they kick it up a notch. I will say this...the people who work here know their stuff, they are passionate about beer, they offer great service, and they are pretty cheap to boot. And,they offer both flights and pints (4- 4 oz pours for $2 or $3 each for the flights depending on the beer) which is nice. They even tell you pretty much everything that goes into their beers (I mean, they are really specific about it. Down to which malts they used, which hops were for flavor and which were for aromas, which yeast they used, etc.) on the menu too, which is cool. For the "issues": They don't have food...so eat before or after. Done. They don't have TVs...so if that bothers you bring your giant smart phone or tablet and make sure it hooks up to 4g. Problem solved! Oh, and if you don't like the "loud music", you might have finally crossed the threshold to crotchety-old-person status and you may just want to grab a growler and hightail it home to enjoy your beer in the privacy of your plaid armchair and quiet easy listening tunes. I wanted to high five her. #MomGoals I feared the worst from some of the reviews that painted a picture of douchey, suburbanites with lake houses, expense accounts, and shiny SUVs. Really though, the crowd is normal, and quite typical for Geneva. But beware the man at the bar they call "Mr. White." He likes to sit at the bar, play on his iPad, and talk your ear off. There were several beers available, and I liked the two that I had. The Witbier (meyer lemon, green coriander, elderflower, orange peel) was lighter, not bitter, and slightly earthy; the Axis sour was, of course, tart and sour. I wasn't a big fan of the Raspberry dubbel, but I like my fruity beers to be fruity. One thing that's nice about Penrose is the variety; IPAs, wheat ale, sour, etc. Some breweries tend to be heavy on one type of beer. Penrose is BYOF, some people had pizza's delivered from nearby Nancy's. I was surprised there was no food truck on a Friday night. But there are plenty of good eats in the area, so a food truck isn't needed. Seating was rough on a Friday night, we grabbed the last two bar stools and I noticed several others standing. On a less busy night, there is plenty of seating at the bar and lots of tables too. They don't take cash, credit and debit only. read more

Nice spot and very friendly folks here, hence the 4 stars. I am not a huge Belgian beer fan so knew going in that it wouldn't be exactly my forte. I hope they expand the menu to offer a few hoppier beers because without that, it will alienate hop-heads like me into only having, 'the 1' and moving on to the next spot. The P2, a Belgian-inspired Pale Ale was tasty enough. One thing I thought was wack was the card only rule. No cash. In a society where everything is being recorded, I prefer to pay in cash for everything. I have friends that work, drink beer, but still do not have access to debit/credit. Its a shame these people wont be able to enjoy Penrose. My twenty dollar bill reads: ' this note is legal tender for all debts, public and private' - so I took it up the street for a second round of drinks. ;) read more

Catch the Metra train from Oglivie Station to Geneva and you'll get dropped off within a 15 minute walk from Penrose. It's only $7 round-trip on the weekends and takes about an hour each way. Once you're there, you'll find a brand new taproom with sessionable, Belgian inspired beers that highlight a variety of different tasty yeast strains. For one paragraph, I'll go off on a tangent....What is a penrose? It's a mathematical design that's found in this brewery's logo and lends itself nicely to a microbrewing analogy. On the one hand, penrose tiling lacks translational symmetry, but on the other, the patterns recur on bigger and bigger scales. Similarly, each batch of beer these guys craft is different from the last, but on a large scale, you can see that there's a bigger pattern to it all: they apparently focus on light, Belgian, and lower abv. I like it when a brewery has an underlying style that loosely ties together what they do from one batch to the next. Anyway, when we stopped by at noon on Saturday, the bartenders were as friendly as you'd ever find, quick to offer much-appreciated sample pours, and the taproom was just starting to get busy. One very minor tip for the staff though - make sure to drop off a small glass of water for each customer, regardless of whether they ask for it. On to the beer: the black ale Navette was definitively our favorite, wherein "the bitter and the malt are high fiving," according to one member of our field trip. The P-2 was mighty good too, with a crisp, spiced twist on a galaxy and cascade hop-loaded IPA. As far as aesthetic goes, there's a certain clean-cut Good Beer Hunting vibe going on, reminiscent of Dry Hop and Solemn Oath. If you're comfortable in those spots, Penrose will feel like home. So go west! Penrose is a welcomed addition to the growing satellite system of breweries within a short trainride from Chicago, and you'll be hard pressed to find anybody who doesn't like their refreshingly light and drinkable style of microbrewing. read more

Located in an unassuming building just north of State Street, Penrose is doing some cool things in Geneva. They've created a chill space where you can grab a seat at the bar or play board games with friends at one of the tables, all while drinking some fantastic beer. We got the oft-mentioned Groupon and spent a nice afternoon sampling beer and taking a tour of the brewery. Our guide was friendly and knowledgeable (as was the rest of the staff) and made us truly appreciate the craft of brewing beer. We came home with a souvenir glass and growler, each of which has Penrose's beautiful logo. If I see Penrose on tap anywhere, I know what I'll be getting. read more

Hip, new hidden gem in Geneva. Overall they put out some pretty good beers. The P2 is a solid take on a Belgian pale ale. Just enough bitterness to know the hops are in there. Proto Gradus is Penrose's take on a Belgian single ale; not my standard first choice on a weekend but perfect for that one or two drink during the week beer. Devoir, the Saison, was somewhat disappointing. I was really hoping for more herbal earthiness that I look for in a Saison. Currently the total number on tap is 6 beers; but there are chances one or two could be tapped out at any given time due to the newness. As some have said, and equally more experienced, the volume is loud on a Friday or Saturday night. But that's fine by me; I really don't want to hear the folks at the next table talk about their kids...I am simply here for the beer. Credit card only. Personally I'd much rather pay cash but really it's much safer for the employees and owners that there is no worry about bank drops, or protecting lots of money over the weekend. Besides I know I'm in the 10% of my friends that actually carries cash anymore and the credit only policy doesn't faze them one bit. Been here a dew times already and one of the bartenders knows me by name. I like that in a bar, and even more so from a local brewery. Atmosphere was open and industrial looking pretty neat how they incorporated I though the tasting carriers all the way into the restroom. Staff are nice. I'm no expert, but this establishment is TOP NOTCH! I attended a private tour of the brewery for a friends bachelor party, and we were not disappointed. It's a small place, but they are VERY passionate about what they do! The bartender seemed pretentious (maybe that's typical for this area) and acted like he couldn't be bothered to serve us. Find a new job, dude. I'm assuming they are making more beer and that's why they only had a few beers to choose from. I had a sour batch which was decent. The rest of my party was not impressed with their choices including an IPA, the dubbel, and saison. And when the music is so loud at 2 PM that you struggle to hold a conversation, it may be time to turn it down. read more

We got a Groupon deal that included 2 tours, a glass, and a growler. The tour was cool, very informative, but also pretty short. The souvenir glass is really well-made, I would have expected something super flimsy that would break if you just looked at it the wrong way. The growler did not come with a free fill, but they're $14 so it's not going to break the bank. The beer at Penrose is just okay. Maybe I'm a 3 Floyds snob (okay, I AM a 3F snob) and these beers weren't really what we were looking for. We came for the raspberry ale, but they were all out, and all they had left were IPAs. We dislike IPAs immensely. We'll come back some other time and hopefully they'll have a bigger variety of offerings. I like that they're credit card only, as well. read more

Penrose is a great fledgling brewery, and a recent visit to their taproom and brewery got me excited for what is to come. The taproom has about a dozen bar seats, high ceilings, and about 9 picnic tables that can seat 6-8. It has an industrial vibe, but since this is quite literally an attachment to a beer factory, it completely fits. To order beer, you have to go up to the bar and get it. There is no food, but you can bring your own. They also only accept credit cards (no cash!). Right now Penrose is still a fairly young brewery. They don't have too many offerings, but everything they have is solid. They focus on Belgian style session ales - which if you're not familiar with the style is low ABV and low on hops. For some reason a lot of self-proclaimed beer snobs believe bigger to be better in both categories, but it's good to see a brewery trying to brew simply great beer without only relying on throwing as much hops or malt into the machinery as it will allow. That said, I know they have an imperial stout coming up, and they have some barrel aging planned for the near future, so they're not completely confined to only brewing Belgian style ales. Either way, I'm looking forward to drinking their session ales all summer and being able to pick up a 4 pack of 12 oz bottles. read more
