This rental car company is the worst!!! DO NOT USE THEM!! Pay a few dollars extra a day and go with the big name companies because you will get excellent service guaranteed. I tried to use this company for the first time because I needed a long term rental and I was trying to save a few dollars. I filled out their reservation form and gave them a call. They were suppose to come to my house by 9:30am the next day and bring me the car. I waited two hours and they never came!! I had to take a cab to work while being extremely late to my new job. I called them to ask why they didn't show up and their excuse was that my reservation form was incomplete, although it was not. But the fact was, they received it and I spoke to them on the phone so there is no reason they should have not been there when they said they would be. To make up for it, Sam told me they would bring the car to me that night at 8pm. Sam and another woman showed up. He brought the rental car while the woman was in a separate car. My husband and I went outside. I provided all the documents they requested. My husband asked a total of 2 questions: 1) what year is the car? and 2) Is Penny's a corporation or privately owned? For some reason, this question pissed Sam off so much, he said, "Forget it! Get in the car! you are not renting a car from us!! Too many questions!!" He was a complete jerk! Completely unprofessional! A customer that is using a company for the first time and providing their credit card information and paying hundred's of dollars can ask as many questions as they want. This company is a fraud! They do not know the first thing about customer service! They are horrible! You do not treat your customers that way, especially when you didn't show up the first time when you were suppose to! The customers are the ones that keep a company in business! Business 101!! They act like they are doing you a favor by bring you the car, as they say "free of charge". BTW....Enterprise also picks you up free of charge and they won't get upset if you ask a few questions! DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY! HORRIBLE! The company replied back with lies! What a shame that they cannot notice when the mess up and just apologize instead of always blaming the customers! This company has many bad reviews, not just my own. I do have credit cards and I DO NOT have bad credit, I chose to use my debit card and provide all the documents that you requested. My Girlfriend and I rented a car from Pennys for Winter Holidays last year. I came across Penny by accident, I needed a car to go to the airport to pick up my friends from an International flight, so I booked a car with Enterprise, but to my surprise they refused my reservation when I came over to pick up a car in the morning. I was literally desperate, 'cause I had no car and only a few hours till the plane lands in LAX, so I called every single Hurtz and Avis in Canoga Park, but they were ALL booked ... They had literally no cars to rent out on Dec. 22nd 2012 ... The last place I managed to find online that was close to Canoga Park was Penny's. I called them and they said they did have available cars. 30 mins later a guy came over to my house and picked me up, we came by to the office, finished all the paperwork and I was on my way. No lines, no waiting, but great personal experience. The car wasn't new, it had over 100k miles on it, but it was in a great shape and ran well, so I didn't really care. I just needed a reliable car, I didn't care how old it was. We ended up renting it for 2 weeks for only $300 total (compare to Enterprise rates at $400 for a weekend). We drove all around LA and took a trip to Vegas for New Years. The car never gave us any problems. When it was time to return the car, I called Penny's office and they told me I didn't even have to return it myself, they'd just send someone over and pick it up from my house, mentioning that next time they can drop off a car at my house, if I needed to rent a car again. That was a pleasant surprise, one less thing to do. The only hick up was with my deposit. First of all I didn't quite understand why the deposit had to be $300, but it wasn't a big deal to me, I was just curious as to why was it so high. The second thing was refund. They emailed me on the day they picked up the car and said the refund would be processed within 48 business hours. I checked a week later and didn't see the credit on my account. I emailed Penny's, they replied right away and said they'd made a mistake and refunded someone else instead of me. They said they'd process my correct refund right away etc. I did get a full $300 refund back in 48 hours after second attempt. It didn't really bother me, 'cause they always responded to my emails on time and fixed the problem as soon as they could. I'd definitely recommend Penny's to anyone who needs a car for a week or two, I think their min. rent is 3 days though. Their rates are the best compare to other BIG rent-a-car companies and they work with you on a personal level. Drop your car at your house, pick it up afterwards, never any lines or waiting at the office - just great. The best example of the level of customer service is our little mishap though. My GF lost her handbag with ALL of her documents inside: Passport, Driver's Licence, ID's ... everything. We looked everywhere in the house and couldn't find it. I called Penny's to see if she left it in the car by mistake. They said that they'd found the bag and confirmed that it was ours :) They even sent a driver to drop it off at my work the next day, we didn't even have to drive to the office to pick it up. THAT'S how customer service should be in EVERY company. I'm actually going to rent a car from them tomorrow. I just got an email notifying me of the response to my review and after reading the response, all of the frustration from that day has come back to me. First of all, my credit card was never declined for the previous purchase and as he was giving me his philosophy lecture on not being rushed he was holding my credit card and Drivers License. I had also given him a copy of my proof of insurance. As to the accusation that I had smoked in the previous rental, this is totally untrue. I have no doubt that the previous rental car had been smoked in because it was very dirty when I got it. However, I am not surprised by the lying in the response because that is the way this man does business. It's been about 6 months since I wrote the review and he is finally posting some lies. He never made any attempt to contact me. He is just a little old, miserable man that has a tiny upstairs office and who thinks he is the king of his little kingdom. Of the 4 reviews for this place that I see on Yelp, 3 of them are bad and all have similar complaints. Keep on lying. Keep on treating your customers this way. It will catch up with you. read more

I shopped around for a good rental deal and Penny's had the best offer. A lot cheaper than Enterprise and the service was great! I made a reservation online and they dropped off the car right to my house for no extra charge! It was awesome. Great clean car and easy transaction, Would definitely recommend! These guys are great, we were involved in a car accident and they kept the doors open a litlle past closing, something ENTERPRISE (right down the street) couldnt do even after the fact that I explained my car accident... anyways we rented a 2003 toyota solara that looks and runs very well. Thanks for making a bad day a little better. However, I would say 3.7 for the selection of cars... but thats expected from a mom and pop rental car biz... im grateful. read more

Good prices, but a crappy car. I only drove the Honda Accord less then 1 day, a total of 30 min, to home and work & the car had smoke coming out of the hood towards the end of the drive with a yellow triangle warning sign in the dash board. I called at 3:40 pm from work, 50 min before I was to leave for the day & the man said I had to wait 2 hours until someone came with another car & to give them time to call a tow truck & mechanic, when the business is only 15 min from me & I shouldn't have to wait for the tow truck or mechanic and they should just bring me another car right away or pay for a taxi so I can get home, which they didn't offer. I ended up getting a ride home and they brought another car to my home, but were still 15 min later then what I was told. read more

In every bad review including mine he responded with insults and lies. To prove this is not the place to go to read the responses to the bad reviews and truly think on would u like to do business with is man and his company. Again very unprofessional . Excellent customer service! Far better than the national rental car companies. I never even had to go to their office, as after I made my reservation they dropped the car off at my house (and picked it up at my house when the rental was done.) They did this even though my house is outside their normal drop off zone. They were also very flexible about the rental terms. I can't say enough positive things about this company! I called Penny's to try and save a little money on a short-term rental, and it turned out to be a mistake and huge waste of time. The first problem was that I asked to rent a specific car, which they said was available. But when I got there a few hours later, it suddenly needed service and was no longer available. The second problem was that I was asking if I could get a pick-up/ride to the North Hollywood location, but after I was already in the car, I was informed they had no cars in Noho, and we were going to Northridge... which set my day back about an hour. The car I ended up with was 30/day, but it was at least 6 or 7 years old and had 106k miles on it. Enterprise will rent you a new car for less than that including their insurance. Weekend specials start at 10/day and they have always upgraded me whenever they could (Sherman Oaks location on Van Nuys and Addison, highly recommended). Side-note: Penny's asks you to pay for the rental upfront, AND take a $300 deposit, which is a little less convenient than any other place I've rented from. Thirdly, when it was time to return the car, I called in the morning to ask if they wanted me to bring it back around noon, in time to meet the deadline, or if I should wait until after work, which would be about 4 or 4:30. He said he would call me at 1pm and let me know. He never called. I called him at 2, at which time he said it would be no problem for me to return it later that day, and also said someone would be able to drive me back to my house in Sherman Oaks. When I arrived, he said he was going to charge me for the gas for someone to drive me back, $15.00, and was also going to charge me an hourly rate for the time I had it past noon, when it was technically due back. I was stranded in Northridge, and being charged about 45.00 in extra fees before I could be driven home. I was very displeased, and demanded that he remove the charges since he said it was fine to bring the car back later, which he eventually did after a fairly heated discussion. I took the bus home, and will never go back. Summary: There was nothing convenient or even of good value about this company. Penny's needs to consider implementing a new customer service policy/attitude, and not misleading potential customers. And as far as saving money goes, I've been much better off at Enterprise. read more

Don't make this mistake. Not worth the penny you are saving with this company. There car is very old and unsafe to drive. I rented a car from them for two and i hated it sooo much. With the same price i would have gotten a brand new car in any other car rental companies. In addition, they charge for extra mileage so i ended up paying more money. This is a total joke company.
