Pass on going to Penny's Diner. The people working the motel are also the cooks, but they have no grill and said it's been broken for over a year. Breakfast could only be biscuits and gravy. Biscuit was out of the freezer and zapped in the microwave with edges hard enough to break a tooth. The gravy was okay. The price was $4.00 for one biscuit!!! Staff didn't know what kind of juice they had but thought they might have orange and apple. Didn't offer coffee or water. The experience didn't come close to anything like eating in a restaurant. More like some college friend's house with an empty frig. This diner and the motel next door are under contract with the railroad. They must be open 24 hours per day and pick up the railroad crews as they stop to sleep throughout the day and night. Thus, there might be a sign on the door that says they will be back in 15 minutes. The diner is attractive from the outside and decent on the inside, too. They need to come up with some crockpot meals or something worth eating if they aren't going to spend the money to fix the grill. Anything will be better than what they are doing now. Call before you arrive and ask if the kitchen is up and working. If you're booking a motel book, confirm the pricing and note the name of the person that gave it to you. If you're starving this diner might get you through the night. Otherwise, stop someplace else and get something to eat. read more

Penney's is a fun place! The food is good. Ruby the manager is great, she's personable, and gives service with a smile! read more

We ate here around 4 years ago and it was fine. This time was horrible. We were passing through after midnight both times. This time a lot of the items on the menu were unavailable. Was told he was cleaning the fryer area so we also couldn't order any fried items unless we wanted to wait for him to finish cleaning. None of the food was seasoned. The chili was lukewarm. Check out the photo of our house salad! Wished we would have went to a fast food place instead. So, yes this place is open 24 hours but really shouldn't be. Go read more

I stopped here a couple of weeks ago. I decided I wanted breakfast for late lunch (it was almost 2 pm). I go in and there's one other table eating there. The waitress finally comes over and gets me a menu and water. I get a normal breakfast and sit at the bar and watch the guy cook it. He's dressed in jeans and a dirty shirt, and his hair is held back with a cap. The table was sticky, I'm not sure if it was from too strong of a cleaning solution or grease. He cooks my breakfast and I eat it, as I watch him clean the grill. It's the end of his shift, and I hear him telling the next cook that it's been a $200 shift. That's a slow day, folks. I never see the waitress again, I never get a refill. I probably would have given this 4 stars, but I saw how much gunk was scraped off that grill right after my food came out. Yuck, it should probably be scraped off like that after every meal, not every shift. Would I come back? I don't know. Maybe. Maybe not. Jury is still out. read more

This is a good restaurant with an amazing atmosphere. If you love 50's-60's decor this would be a very good restaurant for you. They have an ok staff most of the staff was very friendly except for the one women there, she was very rude when we asked for milkshakes. She told us they did not have milkshakes right now. I thought it was very strange. It wasn't too crowded in there and the food came out fairly quick. But it was an ok experience all in all. read more

Penny needs to fine tune her diner! Hubby and I ordered supper and then waited more than 30 minutes to get it! Wouldn't have been bad if the place was full. But one other guy sitting at the bar does not constitute a crowd! Hubs chicken fried steak was good. The corn must of been cooked on the grill because it looked like there were brown burger bits from the grill in it. My burger was burnt on one side and had sat on the plate so long it was no longer hot and the bun even tho it was toasted was dry and cold now! Apparently she forgot to drop the fries until my burger was done! Then it all sat while she put hubs plate together, so he got fresh off the grill and hot while I was stuck with burnt & cold! Timing!!! That's what it's all about. Hard to mess up a burger and fries but timing was what blew it today! And the AC is blasting so frigid it must be 65 in here! That didn't help the serving temp of my burger! Ok. Now I ordered a chocolate malt for dessert! Hubs getting a piece of pie! 10 going on 15 min and still no dessert! Seriously. One other customer and his stuff is sizzling on the grill unattended! Good luck bud! Here she came with cold rhubarb pie direct out of the frig! Really girl! Zap that puppy and take the chill off!!! Still waiting for the malt! 2 girls cooking! Surely service could be faster! I can see why there were lots of cars at the neighboring cafe and only one other customer here! Over all the food was edible(overlooking the one burnt side of my burger & temps) but that's all I can say. Malts finally here and looks good! Mmm tasty! Don't find old fashioned malted milks very often any more! I'll add a star for that malt! read more

Good place to stop along the way. Nothing to go out of your way for but its a solid diner for western Kansas. The decor and building were classic 50's diner. They serve breakfast all day which is always a plus. Menu had lots of options. Coffee was decent nothing to write home about but will keep you awake on the way to wherever you are going. read more

Waited an hour for lunch, then left. No lunch. Total maybe four other people there, plus us makes six. Incomprehensible why this took so long...later were told the manager had the cook make take out lunches for locals while we cooled our heels. Paid for the tea and cola before we left. Had not started our lunches before we pulled out, tipped .01 cent, probably too much. Arrogance and lack of competition causes foolishness like this. Maybe consider bringing your own lunch or starving....would save you a lot of frustration. read more

We were pleasantly surprised that the "vegetables" in our Sunrise Skillet and Hopped Up Hashbrowns included jalapenos. Breakfast was full of flavor, and our server was very nice, though also very new. The diner was clean and cute as could be, definitely the place to grab a bite on your way through Sharon Springs! read more

Is there a way to give it no stars? We could not get anyone to look at us, much less wait on us. It wasn't like the place was even half full. Go 50 yards down the road to Stephens restaurant. They are happy to see you and the food is good. read more

The service you get when you walk in the door is not very friendly at all, its almost like they don't want to do their job. Theyre always sitting on theirs phones or talking amongst one another but never to enthused about treating their customer. Very poor staff and management. The cooking isn't the best for the prices either. read more
