Colby, Kansas, March 2026 The small restaurant has 10 tables. It It sits on the corner of an antique strip mall. Pretty basic inside the restaurant. The salad bar is located right next to the one and only bathroom. The menu has many sandwiches to choose from. It has fewer entree selections. The waitress was new the night we went. She was nice and extremely helpful. She was an older lady, and I only say that for clarification of the other waitress who had long black hair with ponytail. Tried to get her attention a few times, and even though the restaurant is extremely small, she passed by as if though she did not see us. We ordered the chicken fried steak and the fried chicken. Both came with an ice cream size scoop of mashed potatoes and corn. The potatoes and chicken were covered in a white gravy. The chicken was hot and tender. The mashed potatoes were flavorless as was the gravy. The meals are also accompanied with a roll. Butter is in individual packets on the table. The chicken fried steak was thick and had little breading. It would have been better if it was a thinner pounded steak with more breading as that was more traditional to my liking. When they bring your check, it comes with a warm chocolate chip cookie. Cute idea! The ambience was odd and not welcoming. The location was rather depressing. The food was OK. I would give this place overall 3.5 stars. read more

Simple cafe; seat yourself and order typical diner staples from burgers & sandwiches, to CFS or basic steaks. My Chicken Fried Steak was a tad grisly, but good! My wife enjoyed her Egg Sandwich. Food is solid, and service is decent. read more

This was our first time here we come through town often we will definitely be back. I have the chicken fried steak and then a piece of chicken holy smokes. It was delicious if you're passing through town stop here you won't be disappointed. The chicken is only served on the first Sunday of the month FYI The service was perfect and everybody was super friendly. We loved it. read more

We were passing through Colby on the way to Colorado. Not a ton of options for dining in this small farming town but found Welcome Home Cafe to be fine on food and service. I would not say it has ambiance unless you are looking for a place you could take the whole family with small children without getting stares. My husband ordered the chicken fried steak for which the cafe is known. He tells me it was good, he cleaned his plate, but not the best he has ever eaten. I got the hamburger steak and thought it was pretty tasty. Both meals came with corn and mashed potatoes. Choices of white or brown gravy which I got on the side. There is a salad bar with standard variety of items. Server was friendly and food came out quickly. Many menu items were crossed out however there were still several sandwiches, burgers and entrees to pick from. I'm a little baffled by diners who would give it 5 stars but maybe they are comparing it to other choices in Colby. read more

So we were driving from CA to Bowling Green and on this particular day while in Kansas, we hadn't had breakfast before we left our hotel. In searching online I found Welcome Home Cafe in Colby. When we arrived at the address, it sure didn't look like a restaurant. The hubby wasn't sure, but I wanted to go inside. It was like a little country cafe and everyone was so nice. It looked like a place where local people go. We both ordered our meals and they were so good! I had the Sunday special and they hubby had a burger. Prices were very reasonable. read more

Loved this little place. Stopped by to grab lunch and rest and stretch. Awesome staff and great atmosphere as well. Food came out hot and fresh. Huge portion sizes as well. We had plenty for dinner later on. We will definitely be returning. This place was recommended to us by the Rv park we were staying at. It was empty when we arrived but a lady finally came out and gruffly said "sit where you want." She acted like we were a bother. Not friendly at all. Our food was ok. My chicken fried chicken was ok but our mashed potatoes were instant. Canned corn. My friends burger was edible but none of us would want to go back. However the waitress did get a little friendlier and the complimentary cookies were good. read more

I've eaten there many times. They serve a nice variety of simple foods. I don't think it would be likely to please a gourmet, but since I'm no gourmet, I don't really know. But I've never had food there that I didn't like. read more

We stopped for lunch on our way from Colorado to Texas. It was obvious it would take a while with just one server and one cook. She told us they were running behind when we got there. We decided to wait and it was well worth it! The waitress was one of the hardest workers we have ever seen, pleasant the whole time and the food was excellent. We found this place looking on Yelp for a.Colby (I-70) lunch stop...NEVER would have just stumbled across it. It was a gem of a home-cooking style cafe!! Attentive service and such satisfying food! I had the mushroom Swiss burger. Cooked med-rare as requested and served on a special tasty bun (Hawaiian-roll type?). I was glad I went with onion rings (YUM!) instead of French fries for a $2 upcharge. Husband had the 1/2 order (60+) chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes & gravy and a homestyle dinner roll, with included iced tea. He loves his chicken fried steak and was very happy with this one. Prices were reasonable too. We were there about 1:00 on Saturday, and the tables were about 80% filled. Highly recommend! read more

I've been a truck driver many years and whenever got to the area would park at the truckstop next door. I usually walked across the street to the Village Inn but unfortunately they're no longer open. So then I would go to the restaurant inside the hotel next door. But this time decided to go ahead and check this place out. Well the Chicken Fried Steak was just OK. The roll was good. Nice lunch or dinner stop between Denver, CO and Enid, OK. Put the Tesla on the charger across the street and went for Lunch. Food is good and so is the Salad bar (although limited). Plate lunches are generous, and all meals are served with a warm cookie for dessert. read more

Great little small cafe. Staff was very efficient and the food was delivered quickly. I got the chicken fried steak diner that came with a trip through their salad bar. Others ordered sandwiches. A small hole-in-the-wall place, clean, with friendly staff. Nothing much to look at from the outside - or inside...but the food was fresh (salad bar), and hot (meals). Good flavor to the mushroom Swiss burger and fries. Husband liked the chicken fried steak - said the piece of meat was typical for this dish, but the coating was great! Great little home town diner. I'll get this right out of the way upfront. This place isn't a looker. Its tucked in the far corner or a strip mall, and the dining room is just a single medium sized dining room with tables, a counter and salad bar. My wife and I were the only humans in sight and we almost turned around. I'm glad we didnt, the one person working there came out and served us. She was nice, the menu had decent selections and everything in the salad bar looked fresh. My wife got the grilled chicken sandwich. I ordered a well done bacon cheeseburger. We both swapped the fries for a trip to salad bar. Everything tasted fresh and my burger was just right. Not easy to do well done without char. Prices were very reasonable too. They are OPEN! Fast, friendly service and good food. This little restaurant is tucked behind and at the end of a large barn like building. They are closed between lunch and dinner, so check the times. The Village Inn across the highway has permanently closed and the Welcome Home Cafe is nicely taking up the slack:) read more

We had the pleasure of dining at Welcome Home this evening. Truly a hidden gem along I 70. We love a good Chicken Fried steak but it's got to be hand breaded. So many times we've been disappointed when told by a waitress that it was only to receive an obviously frozen patty! We were not disappointed! Crisp and crunchy breading on the outside, flavorful and tenderized steak on the inside served with real mashed potatoes and cream gravy, corn and a warm dinner roll. Yum! Also of note was a lovely salad bar with so many choices to add to a fresh lettuce mix -- black olives, pickle spears, dried cranberries, fresh strawberries and blueberries, veggies like celery, carrots, broccoli and cauliflower plus croutons, sunflower seeds, real bacon and a wide selection of dressings.
