Experience - Not Worth the Price or the Wait My friend and I are currently on a 3-week road trip and were really looking forward to a nice, homestyle sit-down cooked meal here after reading so many great reviews. Unfortunately, our experience was incredibly disappointing. To start, the restaurant was supposed to be open, but we had to wait around because the cook was late. Once he finally arrived and they took our order, things only got worse. When our meals made it to the table, the food was already cold. On top of that, both of our steaks were cooked completely incorrectly. For the prices they charge--I paid $34 for my steak and my friend paid $27 for theirs--you expect a hot, properly cooked meal. It was absolutely not worth the money to eat cold food, especially when you're looking for comfort food on a long trip. We won't be returning. read more

Colby, Kansas, March 2026 The small restaurant has 10 tables. It It sits on the corner of an antique strip mall. Pretty basic inside the restaurant. The salad bar is located right next to the one and only bathroom. The menu has many sandwiches to choose from. It has fewer entree selections. The waitress was new the night we went. She was nice and extremely helpful. She was an older lady, and I only say that for clarification of the other waitress who had long black hair with ponytail. Tried to get her attention a few times, and even though the restaurant is extremely small, she passed by as if though she did not see us. We ordered the chicken fried steak and the fried chicken. Both came with an ice cream size scoop of mashed potatoes and corn. The potatoes and chicken were covered in a white gravy. The chicken was hot and tender. The mashed potatoes were flavorless as was the gravy. The meals are also accompanied with a roll. Butter is in individual packets on the table. The chicken fried steak was thick and had little breading. It would have been better if it was a thinner pounded steak with more breading as that was more traditional to my liking. When they bring your check, it comes with a warm chocolate chip cookie. Cute idea! The ambience was odd and not welcoming. The location was rather depressing. The food was OK. I would give this place overall 3.5 stars. read more

This was our first time here we come through town often we will definitely be back. I have the chicken fried steak and then a piece of chicken holy smokes. It was delicious if you're passing through town stop here you won't be disappointed. We were passing through Colby on the way to Colorado. Not a ton of options for dining in this small farming town but found Welcome Home Cafe to be fine on food and service. I would not say it has ambiance unless you are looking for a place you could take the whole family with small children without getting stares. My husband ordered the chicken fried steak for which the cafe is known. He tells me it was good, he cleaned his plate, but not the best he has ever eaten. I got the hamburger steak and thought it was pretty tasty. Both meals came with corn and mashed potatoes. Choices of white or brown gravy which I got on the side. There is a salad bar with standard variety of items. Server was friendly and food came out quickly. Many menu items were crossed out however there were still several sandwiches, burgers and entrees to pick from. I'm a little baffled by diners who would give it 5 stars but maybe they are comparing it to other choices in Colby. read more

So we were driving from CA to Bowling Green and on this particular day while in Kansas, we hadn't had breakfast before we left our hotel. In searching online I found Welcome Home Cafe in Colby. When we arrived at the address, it sure didn't look like a restaurant. The hubby wasn't sure, but I wanted to go inside. It was like a little country cafe and everyone was so nice. Loved this little place. Stopped by to grab lunch and rest and stretch. Awesome staff and great atmosphere as well. Food came out hot and fresh. Huge portion sizes as well. We had plenty for dinner later on. We will definitely be returning. This place was recommended to us by the Rv park we were staying at. It was empty when we arrived but a lady finally came out and gruffly said "sit where you want." She acted like we were a bother. Not friendly at all. Our food was ok. My chicken fried chicken was ok but our mashed potatoes were instant. Canned corn. My friends burger was edible but none of us would want to go back. However the waitress did get a little friendlier and the complimentary cookies were good. read more

I had the mushroom Swiss burger. Cooked med-rare as requested and served on a special tasty bun (Hawaiian-roll type?). I was glad I went with onion rings (YUM!) instead of French fries for a $2 upcharge. Husband had the 1/2 order (60+) chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes & gravy and a homestyle dinner roll, with included iced tea. I've been a truck driver many years and whenever got to the area would park at the truckstop next door. I usually walked across the street to the Village Inn but unfortunately they're no longer open. So then I would go to the restaurant inside the hotel next door. But this time decided to go ahead and check this place out. Well the Chicken Fried Steak was just OK. The roll was good. Great little home town diner. I'll get this right out of the way upfront. This place isn't a looker. Its tucked in the far corner or a strip mall, and the dining room is just a single medium sized dining room with tables, a counter and salad bar. My wife and I were the only humans in sight and we almost turned around. I'm glad we didnt, the one person working there came out and served us. She was nice, the menu had decent selections and everything in the salad bar looked fresh. My wife got the grilled chicken sandwich. I ordered a well done bacon cheeseburger. We both swapped the fries for a trip to salad bar. Everything tasted fresh and my burger was just right. Not easy to do well done without char. Prices were very reasonable too. They are OPEN! Fast, friendly service and good food. This little restaurant is tucked behind and at the end of a large barn like building. They are closed between lunch and dinner, so check the times. The Village Inn across the highway has permanently closed and the Welcome Home Cafe is nicely taking up the slack:) read more
