I have been going to Pennypacker's since they opened at High Street Place and the food and service used to be amazing. I am disappointed that lately the service has been slower and today my Caesar salad was horrible. It had too much dressing which made the lettuce soggy and it was extremely salty in taste. As a house of vegetarians, I'd never really paid attention to Pennypackers bc I assumed it was just porchetta and the kind of place that puts bacon on everything -- I am glad to be wrong and sorry it took me so long to try it! When I heard recently they have some great vegetarian options I added them to my list, and I stopped by (physical location in Magoun, not one of the trucks) to grab a small bite to take home. Couldn't decide between multiple nice options on the menu and ended up getting several and calling it an early dinner. Standout for me was the curry cauliflower sandwich. Got the full, and it is a massive sandwich, and really tasty too. Breakfast sandwich was simple but really, really good. Only thing I didn't care for was the spring panzanella salad - there was a lot more radicchio in it than I expected - I'm admittedly not a fan of radicchio in big quantities, and it felt more like a radicchio salad than a the asparagus panzanella I hoped for. I went to the food truck by Trillium on the Greenway (highly recommend that combo, lol) Great for meatlovers, but they also had some vegetarian options that sounded appealing on the menu of 7 or 8 things. Portions are pretty generous for the prices, and I always appreciate when I'm given the option for a half or full sandwich. Got the porchetta. OMG Pennypacker's is a carnivore's dream. I am not quite a carnivore so I merely appreciated their porchetta sandwich enthusiastically. But it's not just the porchetta that's great! Their pickled cauliflower and fried chicken sammies are also amazing. But to start with the porchetta. It's served on a sturdy but fluffy ciabatta roll (I think, I ate it too quickly) and just...freaking stuffed, with pork. It's insane the amount of meat they give you. It's a great ratio of cracklings to soft, tender meat--just enough to really coat your teeth with that fattiness but still fill your mouth with warm, pillowy pork. The texture is to die for and the flavor is excellent as well, perfectly salty and fatty, although I agree with other reviewers that an acidic element would've been good. The portion is gargantuan. Easily two meals if you're being only mildly irresponsible. I didn't taste the fried chicken sandwich but it looked like it came with a sesame seed brioche bun and smelled absolutely amazing. The pickled cauliflower sammie probably saved my life that day, though--a great contrast to the porchetta as it's crunchy and acidic and flavorful and slightly healthier tasting. I didn't love the patatas bravas--felt they were underseasoned. Sammies will run you $10-$15 and you can get them by the halfsies or with a bed of greens in lieu of the bun. I've tried Pennypacker's twice now, both times from the food truck. About the porchetta. I know roast pork, I love roast pork. Coming from a Brazilian/Dominican household roast pork and cracklings are everything. Being so familiar with good roast pork means I may be more picky than the average person eating here. My biggest issue is it tasted like the pork hadn't been washed in lime/vinegar/some sort of acid and had a bit of a gamey taste. The seasonings weren't quite there. The skin was chewy not crispy. The fried potatoes were also disappointing, they rely too much on the gorgonzola and the jalapeños to give flavor, the potatoes themselves need more seasoning. Now for the service. This most recent time was the slowest/longest food truck wait I have ever experienced and while I was waiting I saw one of the guys preparing the food eating the food twice. It's a bad look and put me off. Not impressed. read more

I got a fried zucchini sandwich and my bf got a porchetta sandwich. Both were AMAZING! Porchetta was super tasty and tender and the fried zucchini sandwich was uniquely delicious as well. Would you like a small, bland sandwich for $10? Come to the Pennypacker's truck! I see the Pennypacker's truck in Dewey Square every week, and every year or so, as memories of previous disappointments fade, I'll give it a shot. This time I'm leaving a review so that I don't forget again! The truck sells a selection of sandwiches for ~$10 each, with half-sandwiches for ~$6 each. A few sides are available, and they're mostly $5. I bought the porchetta sandwich because the truck features it prominently. 'Surely,' I thought, 'their featured $10 sandwich must be pretty good!' Unfortunately for me, no, it is not very good. As shown in the photos below, it is small and consists only of pork and a somewhat oversized ciabatta roll. The pork has a nice crispiness, but is a little dry and has the overly salty flavor of a slim jim. The overwhelming saltiness is really the only flavor that comes through, and you're left wishing there was something sweet to highlight the savory side of the pork. The roll is decent, but it's too large and tough to work well for a sandwich that, again, is nothing but pork. Did I mention that it's small? You get four good bites, and after that it's basically filling up on bread. It would have been great to have a side to cut the overwhelming saltiness, but the only sides on offer were $5. I've just paid $10 for a small sandwich - I have my limits. Chips would have been a nice companion, but I was forced to pick those up elsewhere. If this sandwich had 50% more meat and possibly some jam to cut the saltiness, it would have been a pricey, but enjoyable lunch. As it is I paid $10 for a pork sandwich when I could have paid Bon Me $7 for a much better sandwich with more pork. Hopefully when I forget this let down in a year and consider Pennypacker's again I'll just go to Bon Me instead. read more

This place had the best sandwich I've had in a very long time - maybe ever. The bread is fresh, the toppings were placed neatly and in abundance and the amount of sauce was just right. Like many other places around the location itself is very small and easily missed from the street, but I promise you will not regret stopping in here for a bite or grabbing something to go! Some of the prices seem a little intimidating ($11 for a full sandwich) but it's so worth it. Also the portion looks small, it's not - I was easily full for the rest of the day after polishing off my caprese sandwich, because there's no way I could leave half of it for later - it was just too good! Pennypacker's didn't pack the punch I was expecting. I ordered their pork tacos and crushed potatoes while enjoying good brew at Might Squirrel from their food truck. The tacos were soggy and salty, which left the crumbling tortilla cradle begging for a hand to hold. The saltiness of the shredded and watery pork robbed the meat of its distinct flavor leaving a not so palatable after taste. Its only saving grace was the pickled onion. A fitting companion which offered a briny and fresh note. And, my rescuing brew that helped wash down the encroaching salty bite. On to the crushed potatoes. They were burned, fried to a dark and shrivelled crisp like the dead residue that often sits lonely at the bottom of a forgotten fryer. Surprisingly, they somehow made it to my plate. All I could do was pick off and savour the gorgonzola cheese crumbles and texture of fresh jalapeno slices. It's no surprise, the slices were propped up in fashionable and Spring disguise to distract one from the shadow of grieving potatoes underneath. So disappointed, because, I waited 35 minutes when the order confirmation including a generous tip confidently pledged a 15 minute delivery time. Last weekend I had a hankering for a sandwich. Hop on google and read up on this business... off I go down the road. I saw the porchetta was their big draw and opted for that. I say this with all sincerity: it's maybe the best thing I've eaten in 10 years, absolutely brilliant. I stupidly brought it to watch my rugby squad play and the attention it got upon opening the takeout box was something else. Recently had one of the BEST sandwiches I've had in a long time. The grilled chicken, cranberry and sausage stuffing sandwich with Apple Rosemary puree. I was a little nervous about the puree but DAMN! So. Freaking. Good. The only reason I take 1 star away is because I ordered the farro salad and it was quite tasteless.. It only tasted like oil? I had Pennypackers cater my backyard wedding this weekend and I am blown away by the experience! The food (as you probably know) was fantastic. Everybody raved (and is still raving) about how great the good was! I'm a vegetarian, with vegan and carnivorous friends and EVERYBODY was pleased with the food. My carnivore friends said they were "surprised that we had such amazing meat selections!" The menu was: Farm fresh salad (brussel sprouts, grapes.. yum), Beef Brisket, Chicken quarters with a variety of BBQ sauces, Korean BBQ tofu, stuffed peppers, savory bread pudding (so. so. so. good). They were also extremely professional. They showed up on-time, cooked the food on the premise in their truck, put out the food, wrapped up the food, cleaned off tables, removed trash, brewed coffee, placed desserts out, cut the cake.. etc. They literally did ANYTHING I asked of them with a smile! Not to mention they are such cool doods, we wanted them to stay and hang out with us! The only thing is that since they are such a small shop run by two brothers; replies to e-mail was not super fast. But, as long as you know this going into it you will NOT be disappointed. I have turned people on to the Pennypackers food and I know a bunch of people who will be visiting the truck and the store after eating their amazing food at my wedding. I had the porchetta and I didn't know what to expect so I asked them to load it with extra meat and some peaches, YES I SAID PEACHES! I am officially a glutton now for asking those fine folks to give me too much of a great thing. The people who run the truck are simply awesome. They've got a phenomenal attitude and love what they do. I nearly got the grilled peach and mozzarella sandwich, however I couldn't turn away the pork, so I customized and they were so happy to help me find my middle-ground. Once I opened the lid to my delish-dish, I knew I had stumbled upon some people who finally understand me. Salty-porky-goodness on a bun sprinkled with slightly roasted peaches made the inner fat-kid in me cry a little. Yes, Pennypacker folks, you did this to me. Feels so naughty, yet so good. Really happy to see a food truck with food of this caliber in Boston. Definitely not your average fare. Well thought out sandwiches on quality bread, unique salads, and everything is homemade. Having worked in the Marine Industrial Park district for 4 years, and only having an Au Bon Pain in close proximity (yuck) --(close proximity meaning a walk that's not more than 5 mins), my co workers and I were so happy to find a new food truck had opened up right across the street. And this some great food! For $6 I got the Porchetta sandwich and for $3 a white bean salad... both were AWESOME. Today I went over for the gazpacho and that was really great too. Other items that co workers have had: hanger steak sandwich got two enthusiastic thumbs up, egg salad got a big YUM from two other people. Pennypackers is one of the only dining options near my work (I work on Drydock Ave). Some of my coworkers eats there literally every day! That's because: IT'S GOOD. Some of my favorites are their ceasar salad (it's VERY good) and their short rib mac and cheese. I don't buy lunch very option, but I've been eyeing their breakfast sandwiches (for lunch). They sound delicious. I tasted some of my coworker's Curried Egg Salad, and while not being a fan of either curry or egg salad, I will say it was delicious! It comes on a soft roll with a shiny top, like a homemade hamburger bun? I have also tasted their chili, and found it quite good! Complaints have been: really slow service, really really fatty porchetta, and burnt tacos. It's also hard to discern when they stop taking text or call orders, so I've had coworkers text in orders, only to go pick them up...and they never took their order. They offer LevelUp, and usually that gets you a discount on your first purchase! read more

I went to this truck in Dewey Square. I would not go back and rather choose a real operation like Bon Me or Clover... or Cosi or Pret. NOT PENNYPACKERs. Their food truck just does not work well. I was 1 of 2 people there at 1:30pm today. There were more people working in the truck. The problems just began: (1) 11 minute wait for a sandwich. Bon Me turns a dozen orders in 5 minutes... (2) Fried chicken was not great - crust can't stick to chicken. The chicken tasted like rubber. And the flavor was a mix of egg wash and bad soy sauce. Long wait for just blah food. $9 gets you a good burrito or salad. Sorry. read more

Don't know where to start, but it's obvious why this is the food truck with the highest yelp rating. Customer service is phenomenal. The guys on the truck are seriously invested in catering to the people of Boston-from using local Iggy's bread to ensuring that there are always vegetarian/vegan options available, Kevin and his crew serve up awesomeness. Oh yeah, that reminds me. THE FOOD. We got the chlled Spring pea soup, the most lovely shade of green. (They don't cook the peas so it keeps its bright, prepster hue!) The Flank steak and Porchetta sandwich were also delish. The Flank steak was hearty and meaty, with a zippy chimmichuri sauce to add pizzaz, and the Porchetta was tender after being cooked for 8 hours. Anyways, thanks Pennypackers for a great lunch. I randomly ran into this food truck while biking around Boston (on one of the amazing Hubway rental bikes!). They didn't have many vegan options (aside from the broccoli rabe with garlic) but were very eager to accommodate. They had a kale salad sandwich with cheese so I got it without the cheese. To liven it up a bit, they added fig jam. I was expecting it to be pretty bland but it had a really great flavor. If it had some sort of cashew dip or lentil/walnut pate, it would be incredible! The broccoli rabe was good but not great. But then again, I'm not the biggest fan of that veggie, I just figured it would be a healthy addition. :) read more

I work on Congress Street near Dewey Square and when I first started working there 3 years ago there were 2 trucks and over the years it seems like more and more trucks started showing up. Enter Pennypacker. It's not on the menu anymore but I first had the Brussels Sprout Sandwich and it was sooooo good. I'm SO sad it's not on the menu anymore (I think it was a seasonal item). I also had the Kale Caesar and it's amazing. It's not overdressed, the perfect amount of parm is so perfectly shaved, and the croutons... those croutons.... crunchy exterior, yet chewy. The next time I went with a friend and he got the buttermilk marinated grilled sandwich and to be honest it was a total let down which is why I'm knocking off a star. The bread/chicken ratio was totally off when we opened the box we were like I think there was supposed to be chicken in this sandwich. What chicken he had was on the dry side. But anyways, the kale salad is so good I'll definitely be picking it up on a regular basis. read more

Pennypackers is my favorite truck, easily. I eat here multiple times/week. They have rotating veg options (and usually some sort of really fancy unique salad), often a chicken or steak or pork combination of options, and some simpler soups and salads. I like that I can eat here nearly every day and still eat something different and unique and healthy each day. Some of my favorites have been a wheatberry plum salad, a sweet potato and greens salad, their mac & cheese, their mushroom risotto, and their steak sandwich is beyond divine. The only thing I haven't been super impressed with is their tacos, but I think that's just because I'm more of an authentic-mexican small corn-tortilla kind of gal, as opposed to giant flour tortillas that are kind of cold. Pennypackers has been ousted from their home on St. Mary's until March when construction is done, and I'm not gonna lie, it's been a hard month. Love the food at Pennypackers! Kevin is an awesome chef and comes up with a plethora a great ideas for the menu every day. Currently devouring the carrot soup and chicken caesar salad. The soup is nice and thick and has been topped off with sesame oil. The salad has tons of cheese, thick cut croutons and juicy pieces of chicken piled on top. I've also had the Porchetta sandwich and it's also excellent. Would really recommend trying this out if you can get down to the waterfront/northern ave area!! read more

I love the food. I hear people complaining about the wait but only see a few people ahead of them. What people don't understand is that they also do call in orders and especially on Taco Tuesdays they can get an individual ordering 50 tacos at a time. I catch them for lunch when they're at St Mary's Street and Comm Ave on BU's campus. The menu didn't really grab me at first, but the food is DELICIOUS. So far, my favorite seems to be the Caprese sandwich. (It's made with goat cheese!) My coworkers love the Porcetta, and I also heartily approve of the gazpacho they have on occasion. Crispy, perfectly cooked potatoes with taleggio [sic] cheese, jalapenos, and olive oil. Slap your momma good. Lamb sandwich - Great roll, but lacking fillings and flavor for $11. Saw some good Yelp reviews and thought I'd try it out to get some local flavor while at a nearby hotel on business. After walking through the industrial area to get there, I saw the menu and saw most things crossed out, which was disappointing. Of the things still available, I went for the cold fried chicken sandwich with slaw and the black-eyed pea and ham soup. Walking back to the hotel to eat, I was wondering if it'd be worth the walk, and what the repercussions of the limited menu would be. Well, the repercussions were two uncomplicated but delicious items. The chicken was awesome, with just the right amount of buffalo sauce, great complementary slaw on a tasty ciabatta roll. The soup was really, really awesome, hearty and tasty. I hope to go back and try some more things before I go. I love how unassuming it is, sitting off in a weird corner surrounded by industrial buildings, with two dudes in there cooking up great stuff. Food truck FTW. read more

Food is decent. Sometimes great. However, the wait (while not the fault of Pennypackers, is part of the experience and therefore valid), has become unreasonable. Even if you place an order by phone at 11:20, you still wait a while once you arrive. At that point it may not be worth the food even if it is decent. Another thing: I ordered a salad and they delivered a salad with chicken. I didn't find out until I got back to my workplace. When I went to exchange it, they gave me yet a different salad altogether, not what I ordered to begin with. The third time they finally got it right. It's not that hard to get a food order right. I realize that you guys get busy, but my time is worth more than this kind of hassle. From now on, I bring my own lunches. read more
