I could eat their tortillas for life. They're so crispy and crunchy and I just don't have the words to describe it. My favorite so far has been the gyro pocket with the lamb and beef filling. It's a generous amount of meat atop some lettuce and banana peppers that give it an acidic finish along with some diced tomatoes. They do add a sauce on top that taste a bit like thousand island (my only complaint is that sometimes they put too much). I'm the foodie in the family... which means I am the one who ventures out to try more unusual options. Still, I saw this truck, turn to the fam and say: I have never heard of Sopapillas before. Well, we were at the festival to explore and had to try these. The sopapilla is a fried "pocket" of bread, stuffed with, in this case, deliciousness! At first, I thought Bulgogi was a misnomer, but research showed "bulgogi" simply means: thin, marinated slices of meat, grilled. Now, if you read my reviews, you know one of the things I am always blabbering about is balance...and these sopapillas hit the nail on the head! Let's start with the breading: the "pocket" itself was delightfully thin and fried perfectly. For dough that's fried, it wasn't dripping in oil and was neither soggy nor crisp as a potato chip. In light of this consistency, it holds all the ingredients spectacularly well being as thin as it is. In terms of the filling: They did not skimp on the meat! Neither the Al Pastor nor the Bulgogi was facing a tragic shortage of meat. At the same time, it was not overloaded to the point where nothing else was allowed to shine. The meat was tender, hot, and flavorful! Compared to the many times I have had something "Al Pastor" in other places, this was on point. In my office, we call Wednesdays 'Sopapilla Wednesday' because that's when the Papi's truck is at City Hall Plaza. The way my coworkers talked about these sopapillas, my expectations were pretty high and of course I Yelp'd them beforehand. These handmade stuffed pockets of deliciousness were not a let down. I was nervous to get the Bulgogi Rib Eye Sopapilla given mixed reviews about the quality consistency, but the pocket I received was delicious and warm on the inside while crunchy on the outside. The kimchi slaw perfect but I wish it was mixed throughout the pocket, not just sitting on the top. I have had a sweet stuffed sopapilla as well. I wanted the Banana Nutella with Whipped Cream but they didn't have anymore bananas so they were willing to accommodate me and let me have a Nutella, Fluff, & Whipped Cream sopapilla instead. Papi's Sopapillas was nearby at an event I was attending so I decided to try them out. The que was quite long so I decided to come back after the que was shorter. Unfortunately, this was a mistake on my part as the savory options were depleted upon my return. With limited sweet options, I went with the doughnut style sopapillas. A sopapillas is essentially a fried pastry. This "doughnut" sopapillas was a fried piece of dough, with a simple syrup dressing and topped with crumbled Oreos. And I checked and they were indeed Oreos and not Hydrox. The sopapillas itself is chewy, a little rubbery, hot off the grease and has a fried doughy, oily taste. However, the syrup is slightly coarse in texture and has a slight staleness. This dessert was very uninventive not only in presentation but also taste. I really would have appreciated if they could have gone the extra mile and make the Oreos from scratch. But honestly, the Oreo is completely out of place here. The sopapillas itself has a bland oily flavor, so combining that with the Oreo cookies and the syrup creates a muddled flavor. I'm getting the cheap cocoa taste of Oreo cookie, combined with the sweetness of the Oreo filling, stale syrup, and the oily taste of the fried dough. This is not really a satisfying dessert. I would have preferred if they just gave me a piece of fried dough with some powdered sugar. Forget the Oreos and syrup. Maybe the nutella sopapillas is better, but I can only speak for the one I ordered. I understand this was towards the end of the night and they were out a lot of food, but that doesn't excuse having a menu item that is sub-par. Checked out this new food truck around the South Station area because it looked like delicious hot pockets! We didn't know what Sopapillas were but I'm glad that we tried it! Sopapillas tastes like a fluffy fried dough and this food truck would use it like a pita bread. Average food truck price and it's quite delicious! Definitely a treat once in a while - i highly doubt that it's very healthy. Bulgogi With Kimchi Fusion (unstuffed) - it came with chips and coleslaws. I really loved the coleslaws and the bulgogi, but the kimchi wasn't marinated for long enough. You get more food with the unstuffed version but it definitely takes away the Sopapillas experience. I may have come in with higher expectations due to the LONG line that was coming off their truck. I ended up waiting 45 minutes to put in the order and once it was in, it came out very fast which was great to not add to that wait! I got the steak and cheese, and the fluffernutter. I honestly could have just used the one. They're both massive sandwiches and by the time I got through the steak and cheese, I had no room for dessert, let alone the massive concoction that was the fluffernutter. The steak and cheese had a good base. The sopapilla was delicious bread that I could eat all day. My problem was that it was all soaked in sauce to the point where I couldn't taste any of the other flavors. It made for a very overwhelming sandwich. I wish there was less sauce so I could taste all of the other flavors in it. The fluffernutter was delicious, yet again, soaking in sauce. What I ended up with was a sopapilla stuffed with over cooked and heavily salted meat and bland cabbage with pepper flakes. I think cream cheese was in there somewhere? Rookie truck Papi's hawks fusion sandwiches based on the South American delight of sopapilla, a flaky and fried-to-order pillow of puff pastry that serves as the delivery device for sweet or savory toppings. They ran out of corned beef by the time we got to the window at 2:15. So after settling for an Avo BLT and Korean Bulgogi ribeye, we had to wait another 1.25 hours only to learn that Papi had run out of dough. They offered us a full refund if we were unsatisfied with a bread-less sandwich. The free bulgogi samples offered to appease customers were insipid and needed more time in the marinade, so we took the refund and went to Pita off the main drag, which gave us access to seating in a quiet park. A word to my Papi. Cut down the menu to get the orders out quicker, or stop taking orders if you have no more product, but don't hold the line captive and make everyone wait for your bumbling incompetence. Wait: it took about 4 minutes for mine to cook. I went at 2:00 to avoid any lines, but you risk them not having some ingredients by that time; I'm okay with that to avoid lines. When walking by around noon/noon-thirty, the line is around 6 people deep with 5+ people waiting, so my assumption is that the wait will be quite long. The idea is really unique for a food truck (compared to all the Thai and sandwich food trucks) and the execution is great!! The sopapillas are always amazing, fresh tasting, so soft and pillowy. And the toppings, omg. The bulgogi meat they use is so tender and well flavored, though my favorite filling is the buffalo chicken - JUST the right amount of spicy and creamy. SOO GOOD. And they always give you a LOT of stuffing so the whole thing makes a more than satisfying meal. We always go every Sunday to the SOWA market JUST to get these sopapillas. For us, Sunday = Buffalo Chicken Sopapilla day and my mouth and stomach hype it up all week leading up to the Sunday. Which makes it all the more sad, when we make the trek all the way to SoWA (we don't even live in South End) and the truck is nowhere in sight. We then check the Ink Block market......and they aren't there either. Now I'm frantically on my phone checking the website and the twitter feed....no tweets! WHERE ARE YOU PAPI? And this is what stops me from giving them 5 stars. The idea is unique and really cool. The food is well executed, consistently delicious, filling, and fairly priced. But the business itself doesn't seem to respect its customers. How hard is it to stick to a schedule as a single food truck? Or, in the cases when you won't be there, to make sure someone tweeted the update in advance? On their website they say they're at SOWA on Sundays, but during the summer months we found them more often than not at the Ink Block instead. I get that they're just one truck and no matter where they park they'll probably be busy for that day, but not giving consistent and accurate updates on your truck location doesn't promote loyalty for those of us that really were wiling to run around the city to find you. On top of that, our most recent trip to the truck, I was double charged for my sopapilla dessert. I noticed right away and told the girl she charged me twice. Honest mistake, no problem. She said she reversed it right there and then while I was at the register window still. Ok great. Totally trusted that. Looked at my bank account balance the next day....she did not reverse it, I was still double charged. I don't care about the money, because what's a few bucks, but why lie to my face and say that you reversed it when you didn't?? Just be honest! But I guess they don't care that I'll find out sooner or later that they lied to my face and basically don't care if I ever come back or not?? I loved this food truck for its food but I really don't think they give a crap about their customer base. They know they have a cool idea, they know they make yummy food, they know they only have to sustain one truck financially, and I think they're on the 'let's just wing it, people will come anyway' strategy. Who cares about those onesie, twosie customer cases where we lie to them about small things like overcharging their credit card? IMO it's not a good long term business model. Walked by the truck when it was at Chinatown RMV, and decided to give them a try. There was no line so I got to chat with the owner for a bit, asked him what the most popular item was: the rib eye, so I ordered it. The dough is hand pulled, then fried to order, and it is a doughy, crispy, warm cloud of awesomeness! The steak comes with an asian slaw that compliments the sweetness of the beef. TL, DR: Terribly managed, a bit unsanitary, and not worth the time, money or effort to try. Strike 1: Waited in line for 35 minutes to order, got up to the window only to hear that they were running out of dough and wouldn't be able to give me an actual sopapilla - so for $2 less (aka $8) I could just get the filling. Rip off? Definitely, but I was still curious, so I handed over my money. That being said, they should have announced this issue earlier on, especially considering that there were about 50 people behind me. Strike 2: Watched the cooking staff prepare the ingredients and stuff the sopapillas without gloves. Filling went on their hands and then was scooped back into the dough. That's got to be a health code violation. Strike 3: After waiting for another 30 minutes after placing the order, someone in the truck sticks their head out to inform the ~40 people waiting for their food that they just ran out of frites and to go back for a refund. How did they not realize this earlier on? Oh, and by the way, that means they've now fully sold out of one sopapilla type, fries, run out of dough, and are giving super skimpy portions on the orders coming out. Strike 4: (Should there even be one). Checked the time and it turns out we had already been waiting for over an hour and still hadn't gotten any food. My friend went to ask if our order had been forgotten about or where it was in line (others were doing the same, and one guy said he had been waiting for an hour and a half), and they said they still had 20 orders ahead of ours! 20! Mind you there were four people in the truck, and all they were doing were stuffing filling into pockets. We asked for a refund. So disappointing, such terrible service. Super long wait. I felt bad for the guy. He was frying every sopapila to order though, which I was told by the person behind me is necessary. I've never had them before. I stopped when I saw the truck because they're not on NU's campus often, it smelt good, and.... ...one of the options was mac n cheese. MAC N CHEESE IN (basically) FRIED DOUGH? YES. Needed more cheese though. And was definitely sitting there for a long time because some of the pasta was crunchy. Also wasn't spicy. I also got the s'mores one which was really good. Massive thumbs down on this truck. We waited for at least 40 minutes and I was able to eat my entire meal on the curb before the other two people in my group were served. At least two other customers who ordered after us canceled their orders and asked for their money back. Hopefully hiring somebody will help that (there was a "Help Wanted" sign up). Also, you need to disclose to new customers that the wait is going to be longer than 15 minutes. Most of us have an hour to eat, we can't spend 40 minutes standing on an corner waiting for food! Really big issue: the sopapillas are not portable! Is everyone just supposed to eat these things standing up on the curb? My advice is do what Zo does: wrap them in aluminum foil and put them in a bag so that customers can bring them back to their offices' or wherever they would like to eat. Another big issue: 4 small pieces of fried dough maximum 1.5" long cost $3? What? The frites were one of the biggest letdowns. At least fill the little paper tray! Overall, the Bulogi Ribeye sopapilla was tasty. But I won't be going back and neither will the other two people in my group. There's the massive wait time, and in total a very small amount of food for a total of $12. I was so excited to try this place on SOWA's opening day but the wait time was RIDICULOUS. I waited in line from 1:30-2:15ish and then for my food from 2:15-3:15 - yes that is OVER 1.5 hours, people. I was keeping track of the time because I needed to be somewhere at 3:30. By the time 3:15 rolls around, I had just gotten the first part of my order and the owner comes out and says they ran out of dough for the remaining orders. Although my BF got a full refund, we were both upset that we had waited that long for them to just give us our money back. Halfway through eating, my lip starts itching and I realize there is avocado in my sopapilla. I had ordered the bulgogi ribeye and they had given me the wrong order! Thank goodness my allergy isn't serious but it's still an allergy nonetheless and I had to throw it away. From reading other Yelp reviews, it's clear they really need to work on their timing since it seems customers regularly face 40+ min waits. It would've been nice if staff had informed customers, not only of the wait time, but also that they were running out of ingredients. At one point, some guy got fed up and started yelling at the owner right in front of the food truck. We had Papi's cater our son's graduation party. I cannot say enough about the quality of the food and how nice the owner was. Each stuffed sopapilla was prepared made to order. I had both a savory, Bulgogi Kimchi Fusion, and a sweet, Nutella Banana. Both were superb. Our guest were highly complementary of the other dishes. I'm really not sure about some of the other reviews here because they are so much better than a couple of other trucks that are pretty popular and I don't know why... A lot of people don't know what a sopapilla is. I'd never heard of them before. Best described by another review below, they're pocket sandwiches made from hand pulled dough and then fried to order. Not too doughy and have a nice crisp to them so the sandwiches don't fall apart. My favorite is the bulgogi ribeye. The meat is so well seasoned that it melts in your mouth. There's a nice tang to it that is complimented by the asian slaw. Seriously, take your first bite and you'll be hooked. My 2nd favorite is a toss-up between the buffalo chicken or the avocado and BLT. The buffalo is not too salty as in a review below. Seasoned really well, it's got a nice heat that just kinda settles in. The shaved carrot and celery add nice crunch and texture rounding it out. My favorite thing about the avocado BLT is the freshness and the thick cut bacon they use. Now here's the sleeper hit of the season - the sopapilla frites. They basically take the sopapilla dough, cut it into smaller pieces and serve them with your choice of dipping sauce - chocolate or my fave - cream cheese sweet chili sauce... Tried out this truck across from MGH. Legit the best thing I have ever had. The pocket was warm and toasty yet soft and fluffy on the inside. I had the bulgoki and kimchi which was out of the world!! We had Papi's cater our wedding last week. We had about 70 guests. The food was delicious, everyone loved it!!! Honestly I can't wait to have another sopapilla next time I'm in the Boston area. Every guest was served in a short amount of time. The only drawback is the owner is not good at communicating through email. Often I had to email twice to remind him to answer a question, and I even had a month pass in between sending an email and getting a response - not the best feeling when you are a bride planning a wedding!!! I understand they are busy especially around holiday weekends etc but if they want to have wedding catering as part of their clientele they need to step it up as far as communication goes. read more
