Check out the elephant dumplings, among others!
Doug B.

Great food, great vibe, great fun making dumplings today. The instructor Ben was lots of fun and a GREAT teacher. Fortunately, there are a couple of places in central Massachusetts where I can buy these lovely morsels, but the trip into the big city to experience the restaurant and factory was well worth it .

Cheddar scallion dumplings

Fantastic independent dumpling shop that offers a range of well-crafted and tasty dumplings. There are usually 4-5 flavors on offer, ranging from ginger chicken to curried sweet potato or lemongrass pork. They also have several scallion pancake sandwiches and sides/salads which are all excellent. I'm a particular fan of the Double Awesome, their just-the-right-amount-of greasy and unctuous take on the classic breakfast sandwich. They have take out (including frozen dumpling packs) and dine-in in a charming, clean cafe space. Note that hours, at least currently, are pretty limited.

Double Awesome yolk explosion. Hey, it happens.
Damien S.

Every so often, there emerges a revelatory evolution of a known foodstuff. The cronut, the Pop-Tart, the bacon wrapped date, the pulled pork nacho. And now, the Double Awesome. It's an egg and cheese with pesto on extremely well-made scallion pancakes. It's a mega handful of fried and yolk and crisp and fat. It's a fully supported marriage between the Capulets and Montagues. It's a song in an eco-friendly clamshell. It's the Metatron. It's, quite literally, a hot mess. Not that you should ignore the other worthy offerings (Magical Kale Salad with a poached egg, the stuffed-til-bursting Beef Dumplings, the tangy tonic of apple cider vinegar, honey and cranberry bitters known redundantly as the Haymaker's Punch), but when in Double Awesomeonia, order the Double Awesome. But don't make plans for dinner. You'll still be stuffed, and likely asleep. LevelUp accepted!

Beet and lima bean purée special
Gauravi P.

We can here for an early dinner. Service was really great. Our server asked the kitchen to make the double awesome for us even though it wasn't on the menu. The double awesome was double awesome for sure! We also ordered the beet and lima bean purée special which was absolutely delicious. I was literally licking the plate it was served in! We also ordered the kale and egg salad with dinner and the peaches and cream for dessert. The cookie in the peaches and cream was a bit too sesame for my liking but the rest of the dessert was inhalable. We also spotted Top Chef winner Kristen Kish at dinner which was pretty cool. Come to Mei Mei if you want great service and to enjoy delicious small plates of food!

The Double Awesome - scallion pancake sandwich w/ two slow poached eggs, VT cheddar, local pesto $7 - 10/2012
Vivian C.

I was excited to try The Double Awesome - scallion pancake sandwich w/ two slow poached eggs, VT cheddar, local pesto $7, but was disappointed by the black spots on the rather thin scallion pancake... and this was after having picked up my order, only to be told that they had given me the wrong order, thus continuing my wait for a bit longer. The rest of it was okay and nicely hot and gooey/moist, but when your order is made upon ordering, shouldn't greater attention be paid to keep your lunch from burning? It probably also didn't help that I'm a fan of the thicker chewy/crisp type of scallion pancake. This was actually my second visit to Mei Mei's. This second trip was during the Fenway Alliance's Open Our Doors event and the truck was parked at Christian Science Plaza area. The first was at the Food Truck Festival along the Charles a few months prior. On that first visit, I tried their braised beef dumplings, which I had overheard others enthusiastically gushing about. Maybe it was the high expectations created by this free advertisement, but I found the dumplings to be a bit doughy and the beef filling to be rather dense and chewy. I wasn't impressed.

Chorizard
Mike D.

I found Mei Mei to be a decent lunch truck. The food was certainly tasty, it just had a few flaws that give this truck an "A-OK" rating in my book. The Chorizard (play on "Charizard"?) is a bowl with chorizo, black beans, and carrots, topped with feta and fried shallots. The chorizo was flavorful, juicy and savory. The pickled carrots cut through the savory chorizo with a vinegary tang. The apple dressing that covers everything in the bowl is a good source of tangy flavor; the black beans need that extra kick, and the apple dressing helps deliver it. Unfortunately, I found almost no fried shallots. Towards the end of my meal, I found one sitting at the bottom of the bowl and thought to myself, "Oh right, there were supposed to be fried shallots in here". A big handful of fried shallots would have given a nice salty crunch, I missed them here. The black beans were hit-or-miss. Some were cooked great, but some were still a little hard. They didn't seem to have much seasoning on them, and were a little bland eaten on their own. The biggest issue I had, was that the bowl felt incomplete: there wasn't any rice, or some big base ingredient. It felt like I was eating all of the toppings to a rice bowl, just without the rice. Since it was missing a good base, it wasn't as much food as I'd like. The prices are a little steep for the amount of food you get. All in all, I'll visit Mei Mei every now and then if I'm looking for a lighter lunch.

I remember when I first heard about this event. My initial thought was "oh look another way NYC and…read moreBoston can compete". Actually, I thought it was just another event New York City could dominate Boston at. But that's just the New Yorker in me. I kid, I kid. I've got nothing but love for Boston's food trucks. I was mostly interested in what trucks New York was going to come with as lets be honest the only food trucks I ever saw in NYC were the halal and hotdog trucks on the streets. And let's just say I was taught never to trust street meat. Good thing the website is good at listing the trucks and their websites so you can scope out the competition beforehand. Surprised to see almost all of them had websites. The first time this event was held in Dewey Square. Contained completely on the farmer's market island. My god it was a mess of lines and the wait for some of the trucks was horrendous. People had to plan strategically in their groups in order to hit as many of the trucks they wanted to try. Food truck competitions are serious business and apparently you call out a competition between NY and Boston you're going to pull a crowd to show some love for their hometown. It's understandable... even if the longest lines were from two NY trucks. The second time around the planners did a lot better location wise. They spread the trucks out along the less trafficked Greenway. Thank god they learned from last year. Also line control was handled a lot better. No funky zigzag across 4 different truck areas here. And there was also plenty of grass or curb to sit and eat. Now for the food. This competition has a habit of bringing an array of different cuisines. I had a plan to visit two trucks this time. Morrocan truck Comme Ci Comme Ca and Indian Chinese hybrid Momos & Buns. Most of the NY trucks had a limited 'Throwdown' menu. While I did pick up the kofka couscous from Comme Ci I would have really liked to try a few of their appetizers that I noticed on their website. The couscous was delicious and I think this was the first time I ever really tried Moroccan cuisine so I don't have anything to compare it to. But I'll definitely hunt down the truck when next I'm in NY. Momos I never got to. There was quite the line and I was not that patient. But while I was walking the area I stumbled upon the Cupcake Crew and tried their maple bacon cupcake. Wow, that was incredible. Although I think bacon makes most things taste better. In all it was a pleasant day with delicious food a relaxed atmosphere and I can't wait until next year's.

My favorite so far has been the gyro pocket with the lamb and beef filling. It's a generous amount of meat atop some lettuce and banana peppers that give it an acidic finish along with some diced tomatoes. The staff is so nice and it's Boston, low key all around. I'd like to officially put my bid in for the seasonal Korean "Good for the Seoul" BBQ sandwich to find a home on the permanent menu. It just ended in July and I am heartbroken. My taste buds are piiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiissed to say the least. It was the sandwich that dreams are made of: soft (yet firm) seeded roll, thin fresh cooked chicken cutlets, cabbage slaw, pickled carrots, gochujang BBQ sauce and sriracha mayo. I stood in 85 humid sunny Boston heat for 20-25 min for it. Yes, it's that good. It's heaven on a bun! I've gotten the Drunken Parm, the Hogan, and the Caprese as well. All solid and delicious. I've never gotten one I didn't like. They are pleasant and open to customizing them as well. i.e. no lettuce, extra onion, BBQ on the side. I'm also not sure how, but Thomas the cashier remembers my name every time. That's SO impressive. I mean, I know I don't blend like most, but still, my name among all those people all week long at all the locations? I feel honoured to say the least. Seriously. I didn't get a picture of the BBQ sandwich because honestly, I had devoured it before realizing I should have. whoops. I did get a pic of the Hogan and will post that soon. The good: All of it. and I mean ALL OF IT. You can opt to get chicken, eggplant or one cutlet of each if you're feeling swanky. The location - this is good and bad. Good right by my building and bad that it moves down to Dewey Sq other days. BOO! The bad: The line. They open at 11:30am at Rowes Wharf and there is a line that starts to form at 11:15. I got there today at 11:20 and there were 8 people ahead of me. I might bring a lounge chair with me one of these days. The cost. I personally don't feel it's outrageous. It's a food truck in Boston on the Wharf and it's phenomenal. However, that said I think it's at the cap of what I would spend. I feel it's worth it for what you get. it's $15 for 1/2 and $20 for full sandwich. Pro Tip: psssst, get the full and take 1/2 home. Or eat it if you can't control yourself. I won't berate you for that. I don't consider it bad, but some do.. they cap you at 4 sandwiches per order. If you want more, get catering. And invite me over. Cheers!

It takes less than a minute to go from ordering your food to having the container in hand. Lunch breaks are precious, especially if it's 45 minutes long. Less time spent waiting is more time spent enjoying the blissful break from work. This is to say nothing of inclement weather! Then there is the food itself! I ordered a large chicken on rice with adds-ons of crisp onions and tomato+cuke. The chicken was tender and nicely seasoned, plus there was more than an ample amount. I always root for a place that isn't stingy with meat! The rice was forgettable, but considering this isn't an expensive sushi restaurant where every grain gets a mani-pedi before being sacrificed to humans. As a starch/carb element, the yellow rice was A-OK for the dish. The crisp onions were something I could have done without. Nothing against them; they felt unnecessary for me (not necessarily for you). Meanwhile, the tomato+cuke added some welcome freshness to the dish! Next time I will try to get half-rice, half-salad as my base... if not possible, I will get the tomato+cuke again, even though it isn't free. While ordinarily, I would pillory a place for charging $2.10 for a bit of veggie, though I appreciate this is what stops people from ordering rice and then getting five kilos of diced veggies on top of that! This is good and fine and would be a 4-star review. I would dust my hands off and get on with my day... but then there are the sauces. And let me tell you... sauces and I go together like milk and cookies! When my Uni had chicken nugget night, some would get a mountain of nuggies. Me? Five or six nuggies and every sauce/condiment the university had on tap! But I digress... the sauces added flavor, tied everything together, added additional moisture, and even played nice with one another! Did I mention sauces are self-service? The mint-cilantro-jalapeno was refreshing, flavorful, and had just a little kick! If you like a little heat, this might be great for you but proceed with caution (protecting myself from your lawyers!) The medium/"hot" actually brought some heat! And this is coming from someone for whom Tabasco tastes like salty vinegar! I dare not try the extra hot... I have high heat tolerance, but not that high! The flavor was okay, not mind-blowing, but combined with the creamy garlic, it was heaven! The creaminess took the edge away from the heat and added a whole new dynamic in texture. Plus, my Slavic heart loves garlic! Finally, the BBQ: I found this sauce unremarkable, similar to the BBQ sauce I have in my own fridge. However, I also realize that only some people like heat (or garlic), and I believe food is for everyone. Will absolutely be ordering from this truck again and again as long as it is nearby!

About six bucks per is expensive, but you get a good taco in exchange. So, I was talking to who I assume is the owner or one of the owners. She told me that her husband is from Mexico, and the recipes are his. With that, points for authenticity! Also, this location is significantly better than the food truck (a delightful surprise). I ordered a Baja Fish and a Beef Barbacoa taco. In both cases, the meat was hot, fresh, and tasty. The Barbacoa had some of those fatty bits you'd find in brisket and excellent moisture. Meanwhile, the fish was tender and had a little oomph. Adding guacamole & onion for the beef and adding slaw & chipotle dressing for the fish was fantastic. They helped add some freshness and accent the savory flavors of the protein. One critique: the Barbacoa tacos tortilla fell apart almost immediately. Quickly making this one into something requiring utensils. I can acknowledge that six bucks each is rather steep. Considering the area and inflation, it's okay. However, forking over six dollars for a taco still gives me a bit of sticker shock. I will give them credit for not skimping on the meat; if I'm paying six dollars per, I'd like to have more than a teaspoon, and you certainly get a fair amount.
