However, the potatoes were disappointing. Likely the worst house potatoes/ hash browns I have ever encountered personally. Overall the food including the eggs was mediocre. We were seated but no waiter came for a few minutes too long. My wife got someone's attention who took our drink order. The server brought drinks but left no straws. The food came very very slowly, and my wife's order was very wrong. I began to eat my food but noticed there was no setup at the table. Again, no wait staff came for a long while. I decided to wave down silverware and ketchup from various staff passing by the table. The waiter finally delivered my wife's food. We ate. Oh gosh. She's more focused on chatting with her friends (even sitting at their table with them) instead of taking care of her other tables. Five locations and they have not lost a step. The menu is simple and does not need to be anything else. Plenty of omelette options, solid sides, and the star of the show: the Heavenly Hot Cakes. The name is not marketing fluff, it earns every word. Light, airy, and unlike any pancake you will find at a generic breakfast chain. Their secret, sour cream folded into the batter. Whatever they are doing, it works! We ordered a single stack, two Heavenly Hot Cakes, and paired it with a side of strawberries and Nutella, scrambled eggs, and home fried potatoes. The bacon came out crispy to perfection, exactly as requested, no more no less. The strawberries and Nutella alongside the pancakes was an indulgent combination that I have zero regrets about. Portions are generous and the prices are more than fair for what you get. Staff was friendly and the place fills up fast on weekends, so join the waitlist before you leave home. Penny Ann's is another no frills breakfast place with a classic menu covering all the basics. We came in early shortly after they opened and didn't have any problems getting a table. Our server was nice and our orders were correct. I had coffee, which I'd skip next time, and the small breakfast: scrambled eggs, bacon, potatoes, and a single pancake. The eggs and potatoes were good, the bacon was just okay, as was the pancake. Although I definitely can see how theirs are different than other spots, I think it's just a personal preference for me. After 5+ years, we decided to give Penny Ann's a second chance. It's always highly rated but, the only time we opted to try it, the dining room was gross. I guess the second time is the charm. We got there 15 minutes after they opened. We got seated right away and the dining area was clean. They were also well staffed, I'm sure in preparation for a busy Sunday breakfast crowd. The service was great, me and my family were seated right away and there were a lot of people in there too. The place is clean and not too loud. My one complaint is there's only two single bathrooms with one toilet each. There's at least 50+ people there this morning and there was a line for them. They need bigger toilets. Now on to the food. I got a single stack of pancakes (2) and there is a special of Dubai Chocolate on top. I was surprised to see there was topping between the layer too. That was fantastic to see and the topping was flavorful on already fluffy buttermilk pancakes. The Dubai topping consists of toasted pistachios, chocolate sauce and some kind of crunchies. Have eaten here many times and enjoyed the food. The coffee was not tasty and watered down. I ordered the breakfast skillet and was so disappointed. The potatoes they use are from a frozen bag, the green peppers and tomatoes were cut too big of chunks and the spinach was under cooked and chewy, the swiss cheese was chewy and not melted good. I had the chili verde omelette with the hot cakes. The chili verde was off for me. Not what I expected and very thin, little pork, and the spice was just not right. The omelette was overcooked and rubbery, too many undercooked onions (and I love onion!). The potatoes were the standard cardboard texture Sysco type frozen... not hot. My pancakes were good size but again, over cooked and dry. Not my experience in the past but - it's how I see PAC now. My wife got the corned beef hash because it is made from scratch. She added two over easy eggs and an order of wheat toast to complete things. Also delicious. Been coming here for years. Great place for breakfast and brunch. My go to is the Stuffed French Toast. I like all of them. We also love the Penny Puffs. Check Yelp because you can get some for free sometimes when you check in thru there. Also - get on the Waitlist thru Yelp because it really helps! It's always so busy here so you know it's good.
