History
Established in 1964.
Chuck and Sylvia Allen were never totally satisfied with the location of their business on U.S. 1 in Fredericksburg.
There wasn't enough space to show off all the stock at Penn-Mar Flooring, customers had to go to the window if they wanted to see how a sample looked in natural light, and some entrances to their access road were being eliminated.
So, once the Allens' lease was up, they looked for a better site. Last week, they moved into a larger space at 1319 Lafayette Blvd., which is co-owned by one of their longtime clients, Abby Construction Co.
"We were always proud of our customer service and installation expertise, but not the showroom," said Sylvia Allen. "It was never comfortable or nice or modern feeling."
The new, 10,000-square-foot showroom is double the size of their former store, which has allowed them to buy more carpet, tile and other flooring products in bulk and pass on the savings to their customers.
Meet the Business Owner: Sylvia A.
Sylvia bought Penn-Mar from Jim Gardner, its original owner, a decade ago. "We love Fredericksburg," she said. "We started having kids and didn't want to move. We talked to Jeffrey Scott [owner of Advantage Business Brokerage in Fredericksburg] about what we could afford."
Sylvia, who has an engineering degree, looked at four or five businesses before selecting Penn-Mar, which is named after Gardner's sister Penny and brother Mark.
"I wanted to be in a service-oriented business where we could see that we'd made a difference," Sylvia Allen said.
We also have a website, www.PennMarFloors.com, where customers can upload pictures of their homes and "test drive" different types of flooring.
Sylvia draws upon her engineering background to turn blueprints into computer-aided design drawings that customers can view on her 40-inch computer screen. She uses it to do everything from showing them how they can stay on budget by using different types of flooring to creating a shower in 3-D.
