I recently purchased a new Subaru Trailseeker from Peninsula Subaru, and I wanted to share a few lessons I learned that may help others navigate the process more confidently. The experience wasn't terrible, but there were several moments that reminded me of the old-school dealership tactics many of us hoped were a thing of the past. My biggest advice is to come prepared. Research pricing, know the value of your trade-in, and don't rely solely on what a salesperson tells you. After numerous rounds of negotiations, we finally reached what I believed was an agreement. When I carefully reviewed the purchase paperwork, I discovered that the agreed-upon sales price had not actually been reflected in the contract. During the final negotiation they switched to discussing monthly payments, but the underlying sales price calculations had not been updated. The new worksheet looked like a better deal, but in reality the sales price remained the same. When I pointed this out, I was told it was a "computer error." Whether it truly was or not, it was significant enough that I seriously considered walking away. Instead, I ended up renegotiating with the finance manager and received a lower price than what was on the paperwork, but it still wasn't what I believed we had originally agreed to. The entire experience reinforced just how important it is to read every line before signing anything. I've purchased and sold several vehicles over the past decade, and I haven't encountered this level of confusion or negotiation tactics since the late 1990s, when another dealership manipulated both the selling price and my trade-in value and ultimately had to unwind the entire transaction. The trade-in process followed a similar pattern. The initial offer was well below what I believed was fair. Only after standing firm through multiple rounds of negotiation did the dealership increase the offer to $22,500 for my Outback, which had approximately 35,000 miles and no damage. That same vehicle is now listed on their website for about $29,000. Buyers can decide for themselves what that says about the negotiation process. If you choose to purchase from this dealership, be prepared. Know your numbers, verify every figure on every document, question anything that doesn't make sense, and be willing to walk away if necessary. Expect multiple rounds of back-and-forth negotiation and classic good cop/bad cop sales tactics. Unfortunately, the experience didn't improve after the sale. During delivery, my salesperson assured me that the dealership's technical advisor would help me learn the features of my new electric vehicle and assist with any questions. However, despite several attempts, she has been unable to resolve many of the issues I've encountered with the vehicle. That ongoing lack of support has only added to my frustration and has made the overall ownership experience less enjoyable than it should have been. The customer service was very good. I went in for an oil change and tire rotation and they ended up not charging me to get the rotation done after an inspection because they saw my car didn't need it. The oil change was pretty quick and they offer a military discount which saved me some money. They just implemented a new after-hours key pickup drop box that worked very well. That allowed me to pick up my car after they closed. They also offer you the option of paying for your service online which was very convenient. The waiting area was cool; it has a huge fish tank right in the middle plus complementary coffee available, which was nice. I would give 5 stars but they forgot to replace the battery in my key fob as they said they would! Overall, I was very happy with the service. read more

On December 9, 2025 I brought my crosstrek in for an oil change. When I got home I was surprised to see they did not rotate my tires. I pulled out the tire information /warranty brochure that came with my car and in it the information recommends a tire rotation when the car has between 5000-8000 miles. I called the service department and the young lady said she didn't know why it hadn't been done, but would get back to me within the week. By mid January I had not heard anything back, so I called to reschedule the tire rotation. At this time I was told the rotation would cost me @$27 plus taxes. I asked why there was a charge...The tires came on the car I bought at Peninsula Subaru. The tires (that were on the car) came with a warranty that specifically advises rotating the tires between 5000-8000 miles. The service representative said, no it wasn't covered and I would need to pay the cost myself. I did not schedule the service. Instead I drove to Gig Harbor Les Schwab tire center where they greeted me cheerfully, asked what I needed, and rotated my tires (within 35 minutes) at no charge...and I didn't buy the tires there! THAT is what customer service looks like. I am incredibly disappointed in Peninsula Subaru and their lack of care for the customer. read more

Firstly, when I bought the car last year, they tried to steal my credit by insisting on my credit information when I was paying cash. Within 24 hours of unlocking my credit as they asked, I was notified that someone tried to put in a fake report in my name to steal my ID. Who else but the sales manager who insisted? One year later, take the car in for "free" oil change in order to stay under warrantee. I had just hand washed the car, that sits in the garage with 4,000 miles on it and in pristine condition. Comes out of the shop with scuffs, scratches and sticky crap all over the hood, and bumpers. Even supposed detailing didn't remove one pretty bad scratch. DO NOT GO to Peninsula Subaru! Their service department will quote you work that you don't need. The last time we used them, approximately 2 years ago, they told us we needed a new engine for our 2014 Forester because there was metal in the oil. We took it in for a simple oil change and was told that we were going to have to shell out thousands of dollars. The car wasn't making any funny noise, burning oil, and was running just fine. I started changing my own oil, and even filtered the old oil finding no metal at all. The car has been running fine for the past two years. Then recently, my mother-in-law took her 2014 Impreza in because the wipers weren't working. They quoted her $2,000 to replace the wiper motor and wiper switch. I did a simple voltage test on the switch and determined that it was functioning properly. I replaced the wiper motor for $135, and now everything works fine. Do not get your car serviced here. I cannot speak to the quality of the sales team, however, the service department is incompetent. After months of back and forth with an issue, which they should have diagnosed and fixed the first time, I am now told that I need to fork over even more $ for a problem that should have been resolved months ago. The service manager was condescending and unyielding. They have refused to do anything else unless I pay up. I am now working with Subaru corporate, and once this problem is fixed, I'm never going back. This is actually the second time they've screwed up. After a $3200 repair, I started to hear a loud squeaking under the hood and found out that oil was seeping into my anti-freeze. Their mechanics are sub-par at best. My wife and I went to trade our 2021 Forester Touring that we purchased from them four years ago for a 2025 Forester Hybrid Limited. We only have 30k miles on it and it is in excellent condition. The dealership tried to make up a problem with our car by saying there is an issue with the starter and lowballed us for trade. First off to have an issue with the starter it would have extended cranking or not crank. Our car also has the fuel saving feature of turning off the engine when stopped so it restarts quickly when you release the brake. There is no issue with the starter. Then they stated if you get it looked a in our service department and there is no problem then we could possibly offer you more. How stupid do they think we are? WHY I WILL NEVER COME BACK AFTER BEING A LOYAL CUSTOMER FOR 16 YEARS. My mom and I have been coming here since 2008 and never noticed anything fishy until I took my car in for the 150,000-mile service in June. After the check-up, Subaru service informed me that my transmission needed to be replaced along with the airbags. Subaru quoted the job of getting the transmission replaced to be $10,206!!! This was detrimental to me, I couldn't afford this let alone a new or used car. Thankfully, a good friend recommended an honest mechanic to me to get a second opinion before I went into debt trying to fix this issue or buy a new car because after bringing my car in for a second opinion we found out that SUBARU LIED TO US!!! THERE WAS NOTHING AT ALL WRONG WITH MY TRANSMISSION and infact only my front wheel bearings needed to be replaced which we ended up having a family friend do and only costed us $150 vs. the $10,206 that Subaru quoted us to get my perfectly well-running transmission replaced. Additionally, the airbags that needed to be replaced, quoted to cost another $415, was only a faulty sensor. On top of all of this, a co-worker whose daughter previously worked for Subaru Service informed us that THOSE WHO WORK IN THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT WORK ON COMMISSION meaning they are looking for anything and everything to charge you for. In our case, those working here were willing to lie to me to gain for themselves. Our advisor was Madeline O'Connor. At this point I am trying to make everyone aware of what Peninsula Subaru is doing, if you think these dealerships are more honest than they have been known to be in the past, think again. I hope for the best for everyone who comes here but I can only wonder about how many times not only my mom and I have been lied to over the years, but how many times Peninsula Subaru has lied to all their customers, maybe even you, costing thousands of unnecessary dollars to fix things that don't need fixing. First, they let my mom sit in the service center for 4 hours before realizing they had not even started working on her car. And, that was only because I called looking for her. They then supposedly fixed the car, and at no cost to her, because I had called and gave them an earful about ignoring an 87 year old woman in the waiting room. They also detailed the car to make up for the mistake. However, a few weeks later, the check engine light came back on. Wish I had read these reviews before bringing my car here. My passenger side window has been defective since I purchased the car (misaligned window, won't auto-rollup). When I dropped off the car, I told the service person to "Please tell me what you can do about the window, and that it's defective since purchase, and under warranty". He told me it's not under warranty, and will be $800 to fix. When I got home, I realized on the receipt, he charged me $175 to diagnose the problem. Why would I pay them to diagnose a problem I already knew about and said was under warranty? Terrible rip-off. Also, my brakes squeak, and the service member told me that was normal and nothing can be done and dismissed the problem. I guess Subaru brakes start squeaking at 70K miles. 2019 Subaru Outback, terrible car. Also spent 3 years trying to figure out why my battery was draining due to a defective module. I have been getting oil changes here regularly and have always had a pleasant experience. One of my fans had to be replaced and the staff was able to schedule an appointment within a few days. I paid my deductible and it was all taken care of! My most recent experience was nothing less than amazing. I walked in on a Saturday to get an oil change as I have not been able to get an appointment due to my busy work schedule. The staff informed me they are down to two bays and are not taking walk-in's. I explained that I drive for a living and really need my oil changed before the next work week. DJ was very quick to reach out to me via email with the following price for a base model Forester Limited SUV. The Market Price for this car is $36,205.00 + $1,645.00 =$37,850.00 Includes Limited package 32 STARLINK 8" Multimedia Navigation System + Harman Kardon Speaker System + Reverse Automatic Braking + Heated Steering Wheel!" When I asked about the specific line items included in the $36,205 price, he would not answer the question directly. It took several attempts at asking this question differently, but I finally got the answer below. "Subaru corporate has nothing to do with how we set our pricing! They have a Manufacurers Suggeted Retail Price and with current market conditions we have a 1995.00 to 4995.00 mark up depending on the car. this mark up is $2455.00 over the suggested price." I responded with a copy of the Letter from Subaru CEO Tomomi Nakamura dated February 23, 2022 along with a related news article where mark-ups were not in line with the Love Promise, which is a core business practice of Subaru. If you read the letter, you will see where CEO Tomomi references that corporate has helped the dealerships during the COVID downturn in the market. As I told DJ, I will be filing a formal complaint with Subaru Corporate. Buyer beware of the mark-ups at this dealership that advertises their lower sales tax rate. Kept getting emails about recalls for my car. Made an appointment through said email to service those recalls. Added complimentary oil change on top because why not, it says free. Waited 2 weeks, drove in today. Had to go through 45 minutes of stop and go traffic, used lots of gas which is not their fault. Get to my appointment and talk to a Gage who tells me the oil change is $45 and they can't fix my recalls because I didn't call them to specify I had recall work...he says thats the way it is and that I need to call and make the appointment over the phone. During the conversation is what upset me most. Gage had zero effort in helping me make another appointment, Gage has zero empathy or consideration for me taking time off work, my gf also drove a different car to pick me up, going through traffic using gas $, Gage was simply rude and unhelpful. I give them as much as 1 star only because their service dept seems adequate. But don't ever go to them to purchase a car unless you have a quote from another dealer that's a lot less than the 'suggested retail price'. They might match that, but if not they won't give you anything like a fair deal. I had purchased cars from them in the past, and they had been willing to negotiate. I always suspected they didn't give me a great deal, but I figured it was at least minimally fair. I was less sure I got a fair quote on my trade-in 7 years ago. They gave me $1700, on a pristine car that KBB valued at $5000, but I accepted it. A week later their website listed that car for $10,000! So this year I not only checked KBB and NADA several times, but looked online for used cars in our region of the same model, from a year before to a year after mine, with similar miles. They refused to budge from the manufacturers suggested retail price on the new car. Despite my evidence of what my trade-in was worth, they refused to offer me anything close to it. Finally they came 'up' to $10,000. Belatedly I asked for a quote on the same new car from another dealership. It was nearly $3000 less than Peninsula Subaru insisted was the best they could do. Today the Peninsula Subaru Internet Sales Manager quoted to me a price of $22,000 for the car I traded in to them only 4 days ago for less than half that. Don't trust these guys. read more

Attempted to buy a used car at Peninsula Subaru. Wow, they are really dishonest and rude. Made an appointment to be there with the salesman the day before and arrived to find them unprepared. We waited 30 minutes for him to retrieve the vehicle and then we got in it to test drive, the fuel was on empty. I thought they would just make a quick stop and fill it up, but instead we were told the test drive would have to be "short". The asking price for the vehicle was over close comparisons in the area, but they refused to budge at all on the pricing. Tires needed replacement, but they were adamant they were "fine". I was really surprised at the attitude of the salesman. He was argumentative and frustrated we would not settle for their sales price. He seemed to take it personally. So, we left and found a nicer, same model vehicle at West Hills Honda. They were amazing! Very respectful, helpful and obviously have better sales knowledge. Do not go to Peninsula Subaru. I paid for front and back brake service in 2023 and they screeched ever since. Every time I went in for any service I complained and they treated me like I was crazy because their 'technician' couldn't replicate the noise. I had to take video of my brakes screeching like a banshee before they stopped gas lighting me. Additionally at each brake inspection/service they found something new and expensive wrong with my car. When I asked why they were finding some new issue at each and every visit I was told the technician wasn't doing a thorough work-up on the car. My last service they kept my car for two weeks with no updates until I called them only to be told the one 'tech' working on my car was off work for several days! When I finally got the car back they told me my AC compressor was going out and I need $7000.00 worth of work to fix an oil leak. To top it off they left we with zero gas in my car. Almost broke down on the way to a station! Absolutely horrible crooks and the location General Manager Steve Taylor never responded to my email about the hell they put me through for over a year.
