Pengilly's Saloon is, without a doubt, a Boise treasure. Located in the heart of the Old Boise Historic District, walking through the doors truly feels like taking a step back in time. It is no wonder Esquire Magazine once called this spot "the one true classic in Boise." The atmosphere is steeped in history, featuring a stunning 114-year-old hardwood Brunswick bar and a beautiful turn-of-the-century National Cash Register. From the vintage cigarette machine by the door to the classic pool table, every corner of the saloon radiates character and charm. The history here is fascinating--it originally served as a grocery store before transitioning into the Stockman's Pastime Bar in the 70s, eventually becoming the Pengilly's we know and love in 1976. That legacy is felt in the soul of the building. The service is consistently excellent. The staff is always friendly and welcoming, making every visit a great experience. Whether I'm ordering a Sex on the Beach or sticking to a Shirley Temple when I'm the designated driver, the drinks are always spot on. My fiancé usually goes for a double Jack and Coke, and we always have a fantastic time soaking in the live music performed by talented local artists. Ambiance of this place was fantastic. At first we were hesitant as we didn't know what the crowd would look like. Come to find out, it's all ages! The band that played was amazing and the servers were great at checking up on us for drinks. Lovely place to meet people and dance with live music. This place is indowntown Boise. It has an "old" feeling which makes sense since the bar is from the late 1800, the bar against the wall with the mirror is from the early 1900s, and the floor is old hard floor. It is dark here which adds to the atmosphere. There is a ton of old pictures and memorabilia on the walls which I think is pretty awesome. It is just a cool place all the way around. Our bartender was nice and told me about the history of the pieces. We came here during Thanksgiving and it was open with plenty of Street parking. I have a feeling though that even during normal time parking is not an issue. They have a stage, so they have my music also. read more

This place is pretty great. It's downtown by Blue Sky Bagel. They have live music and plenty of places to sit. They have a water station that you can help yourself to at the bar. The waitresses are all super friendly. Got me a glass of water while I was just sitting there waiting for my friends to show up. The stage area is pretty small and the seating area in that particular section can fit 30 people at the tables. I didn't drink so I don't know how the drinks are. Only huge negative that is a factor in whether or not I go somewhere is the location. It's located downtown. Not a fan of attempting to find parking, but other than that, super cute bar. Oooohh yea, I guess during the week starting in January they have a burlesque show. That is awesome. read more

Super cool joint in Boise. Came here twice during my bachelor party. Was more trashed than a bag of mashed up assholes and my buddy had the great idea to do a "Big Iron" shot. Now you ask, what is a big iron shot? Well it's a shot of whiskey (buyers choice) while you have a horse shoe lip of dip in. I couldn't finish mine, friend 1 puked in the whiskey glass and shot it again, and friend 2 took it and immediately ran to the bathroom to release his stomach demons. When I want to feel all cool and young again this is my spot to go!! This is my top bar choice to visit for a night out. What is special about here though is the crowd seems to be a bit older. By that I mean 25 and up which is a nice change from some of the bars around that area. Music! Affordable drinks!! Space to move (when you aren't dancing!) It is the perfect balance! On special music nights it can get crazy crowded so be prepared!! (Example: New Years, Tree Fort) If you go later in the night and there is music, expect to wait for a drink and expect it to be a bit busier. This is my main complaint, getting a drink is disorganized and people cut all the time. I need to learn to be more cutthroat and this won't be a problem. If you manage to find a spot at the bar you are golden on getting a drink. The keepers keep a watchful eye on your drink so it will usually keep full. There was a table of 4 guys in front of us and they were having a seriously great time. You know, general goofball stuff. My friend and I sipped our drinks while we enjoyed the band and various shenanigans. I had a cup of not the worst bar coffee I've ever had and Blondie had a whiskey. ~One Shot~ It was time to go. As we stood up, the fellas turned around and placed a single shot on our table. Me: (Not willing to assume it was for me, ignored it) Blondie: "What is it?" Fella 1: "Tequila Silver 1800. The singer in the band didn't want it, and we don't either so..." He shrugged and gestured to the shot. Me & Blondie: ~ It was a capricious kind of night~ Neither of us were really into the shot of tequila so we had to think. Blondie bought time and suggested rochambeau. We tied with paper, then I won rock over scissors, then we tied again with rocks. We both had nothing. No ideas, no exit strategy, and no plan. Fellas: "Who gets it, winner or loser?" The worst experience of downtown Boise I've ever had. The bouncers are very rude and called girls in short skirts "whores." The drinks were fine, a little on the high-price end. I have had some good times at this bar, mainly with their live music which I enjoy, but had an awful experience last night that can't merit a good review. There was a bartender with long hair and mustache who was berating multiple girls. He gave many wrong drinks, spilling many of them and splashing on our faces, and complaining about how much he was tipped for his poor service (which he was tipped appropriately). Came here after dinner at Bar Gernika in hopes of grabbing a drink and taking in a bit of local flavor. I agree with Pity D about the charm and the old-saloon feel. The stage almost looked like a mini-theater. It's truly unlike any other place I've visited before. Good, quick, and friendly service. Kind of calm, it seemed, for a live music venue. I used to love going to Pengilly's as a break from the usual in downtown Boise. I still love going there, as long as it's on a weekday. Since they opened the expanaded area, the atmosphere feels different to me...maybe the new pool tables take the focus away from the music? Before the expanded area, it was a busy bar but you could still find a place to stand around to talk or watch the band. I tried to visit on a Saturday about a month ago and it was my first time there since the expansion. It was completely packed. I don't think I was even able to get to the bar to get a drink. I'm really glad they're doing well, but I'll stick to visiting on Sunday nights to see some bluegrass. This spot was recommended by two people while I was having dinner in Boise, ID. Very eclectic bar! You need to walk around and take in the ambience, very Native American saloon with lots of character. I was taken with the light fixtures, and the wallpaper behind the bar - reminded me of the print from the Disney haunted mansion (strange, right?). You will also find a lot of neat old pictures that adorn the walls. They have a little stage and they play live music every night after 9pm. They also have one pool table which is always fun. Drinks were priced fair, I had a Guinness Draught for $4. If you are looking for a unique place with character, make sure to check out Pengilly's Saloon. I can dig it! I'm not really a "night owl", so going to a bar on a Saturday night is suuuuuper out of my comfort zone. I came here at probably 10ish, and it was already starting to fill up. My friends and I snagged a table and stayed for around an hour as we sipped on some Moscow Mules. Thoughts/things I noticed: + Loud, But the reason it's loud is that there is fun music playing - so this isn't a bad thing. + Dimly lit (as a bar should be). + Spacious with lots of different places to sit/mingle: bar-top area, table area, and dance floor. + Speedy service: we ordered our drinks and had them maybe 3 minutes later. + Strong, but tasty Moscow Mule. Only disappointment was that it wasn't served in one of those cool mugs. It also seemed like a smaller portion size than the Mules I've had at other places...which is perhaps why it tasted so strong. #AhaMoment + Overall, cool environment for sitting back and grabbing a drink with your friends. Not the best place for carrying on a long/deep conversation (as it is loud), but nonetheless a cool place to hang out. + If you wanted to, you could definitely get rowdy here, but you can also just relax. Most of the bars around Downtown Boise are for younger adults, but Pengilly's does well with all ages, but with a (generally) slightly older crowd. It's almost the only bar my wife and I go to. The bar is non-smoking which is wonderful. They have entertainment every night and we have heard some great local AZ well as traveling bands here.
