I don't know about you, but in my next life, I want to come back as my own dog. Yeah, she's a princess. And every pet we've ever owned has been equally "royal". But, for now, this is just about Princess Ellie. Our little girl is a shelter rescue. As such, she's a bit skittish and doesn't warm up to people very easily. In fact, she's afraid of her own shadow. I worried about bringing her to a groomer. But I didn't have much of a choice because she's a Chow mix. She's got thick black hair with a thick, furry undercoat. Not easily managed, and miserable in the summer. The truth is, once you get past the beautiful topcoat, that undercarriage is a pain that I don't wanna deal with. But I know I wouldn't want to wear a black fur coat in a Southern California summer. So I'm certainly not gonna make my dog wear one either. I'm nice like that. Well, that was 6 years ago. I don't worry about it anymore. You see, Lenetta and her staff over at Penelope's Parlor are absolutely wonderful. Soft-spoken and gentle, Lenetta always makes me feel like my baby girl is in the right place (whether she wants to be or not!). They also understand that with some of her shelter-induced "issues", the less time she has to spend in a kennel, the better. So they always let me bring her first thing, and they always get her back to me quickly. They're kind, and thorough and patient. Our girl has always come back to us happy, bouncy, clean, and beautiful. She even has pep in her step, like she knows she's looking fine. I can't give a more glowing review than to say that I trust my dog (who trusts me) with the gang at Penelope's Parlor, and I tell all my pet-loving friends who are looking for a groomer that they couldn't find a better place to get their four-legged child cleaned up. What an outstanding experience for me and my cat!! She looks like a new kitty, even though she's like a thousand years old!

I have taken my dogs here for a decade or more. I had a senior dog with a lot of arthritis at the end of her life. The owner always groomed her and used a calming voice and Sadie was always relaxed and felling better. I now take Boomer and Sammy in. Sammy is a little afraid of other people but he goes willingly in the door. He gets the haircut appropriate for his breed. Boomer was a rescue dog and he was very hyper but always comes out looking great and happy. She's been grooming Boomer for ten years. I trust the staff with my animals 100%. read more

The staff did an amazing job with our VERY timid pup! Since this was Blanket's first time here, I asked if there were any extra charges for 'difficult' dogs (what another groomer at Petco called my 13 lb shih tzu). The gentleman helping us said that there were no additional fees and that they would take breaks during her hair cut to keep her as calm as possible through the whole thing. When I went to pick her up there were no signs of razor burn on her bum or random bald spots and her nails were nicely trimmed and filed. Hidden Jem! I absolutely love this place. I have been taking my Malta poo here for about three years. $50 for everythinggggg and she always look so fresh and fluffy! Or shaved nicely for a summer cut. They do it all, nails, anal glands , ears , teeth, bath and shave or trim. It seems family owned or has that kinda feel at least. The customer service is awesome. They also take your pups and cats out to the bathroom and on walk breaks! How awesome is that?! You have to try this place! read more

I can not say enough nice things about Penelope's Parlor! We have a 14-year-old Shitzu who is blind and VERY resistant to strangers picking him up, touching him and especially grooming him. He also has a heart murmur which rules out a lot of sedative options to relax him during grooming. We've taken him to many other groomers and they refused to groom him because he was deemed "aggressive". Penelope's is the only location that has gone above & beyond to help us figure out the best plan of attack to groom him. We are forever loyal Penelope's customers now! The "manager" there, young lady with the glasses and the colored hair, she will ignore you if you're standing right there, and if you do ask for help, she'll blow up in your face. Due to this post, the owner and I spoke once again and she did let me know that they were truly sorry for what happened at her facility and conveyed to me how deeply they all love pets there. She was quite sincere and offered to do whatever it took to both make me and Dex feel comfortable to come back and try them again. Since our experience, which she said, is rare with Penelope's, they have instituted a new program to make sure that the animals are fed and walked properly as well as keeping a sign in and out sheet noting when and if they used the restroom when out of their cage. Again, Penelope's has treated Dexter quite well in the past and made him feel like a million bucks. I have no doubt that their clientele love them for all of their hard work and their fair rates. Due to the discussion I had today, I will truly consider going back to Penelope's in the future. Again, this seems like a rare experience and that they do truly care for the animals that come to them, just be sure to double check with them over the holidays to make sure they are advise of your pets needs, and that those needs are met. My kitty was crawling with fleas so I had her a flea bath (plus she would go NUTS when I tried to bathe her!!), and they did such a wonderful job; even my Elizabeth was calm the whole time. I picked up Scooter, my 14 1/2 year old Shih tzu/Lhasa today and he looked so cute, I couldn't stop hugging him. He smelled wonderful, too - not "perfumey" - just fresh and clean. Because Scooter is getting older, he drinks a lot of water during the day. When I told the owner, (I'm so sorry,I always forget her name) she assured me she'd see that he had extra and, she added, "We'll take him out a few times as well." I feel like little Scooter is always safe and well-cared for while he's at Penelope's. As we drove home after picking him up, I opened the window for Scooter to look out just to make other drivers smile because he looked so precious with his new haircut and his neatly trimmed ears flapping in the wind. This place is wonderful! My Yorkie got skunked and we couldn't get the smell out. We could hardly stand it and I was frantically calling all the groomers in Costa Mesa and Huntington Beach on a Monday at 4:30. Most of you probably know that the majority of groomers are closed or getting ready to close at this time. But when I called Penelope's Parlor and explained, they took him. An hour (and three baths later) he was stink-free! They even rinsed his harness. I can't give them a higher recommendation. read more

After several bad experiences at the local Petsmart and Petco for grooming services, I was referred to Penelopes. The staff is friendly and attentive to my dog's needs. My dog always looks amazing after a full grooming, and the slightly higher price is worth it for the extra care my dog gets. I noticed that every time I brought my dog home from Petsmart or Petco, he would come home with fleas acquired from other dogs because the kennels weren't being cleaned often and he would scratch himself like crazy. I've never had that problem with Penelopes; my dog leaves the groomer clean, flea-free, and happy. read more
