I have been wanting to try this place for a while but do not live on the Eastside. I will be making the trek way more often. The food, drinks, ambiance and service were amazing. The chicken Parmesan pasta was perfectly flavored with a great marinara sauce. The pizza was so tasty. The burrata with heirloom tomatoes, pesto and balsamic drizzle was creamy and delicious. Wow, Penelope's pizza is absolutely fantastic! We try to get there early to avoid the huge crowds that eat here. Our table had a good view of the young chef who spun and flung the pizza dough in the air quite skillfully before adding generous toppings and baking it in a wood-fired pizza oven. To was happy to try this pizza spot out as my husband and I are looking for a new go-to when it comes to pizza, on the east side. The location off of Kolb was convenient. Walking in on a Friday evening, it was pretty busy. It's a smaller space but with plenty of dinning space. My husband and I sat at the bar, where there were 4 TVs, 3 on playing different things (one sports, one "the office", and the other the POV of someone walking in Japan). We ordered an appetizer, but I can't remember the name. I searched the menu online to find it just now and it's not on there. The pizzas also seem to be off since my husband orders the Jackie Luna and the menus in the restaurant said jalapeño, which it doesn't say on the online menu. I also don't think they put pineapple drizzle on his. Not sure what the reason for the discrepancy but it seems their online menu may be different than the in person one. The pizzas were good. They're thin but not charred and they definitely don't skimp on the toppings. I'd love to try more of their pizza flavors. read more

I've had my eye on this place for the last year and have been specifically wanting to try their pasta night. I finally had a Tuesday night off so I prioritized pasta night, but unfortunately, it did not meet my expectations. First off, line was ridiculous. Good for them though, that should mean the food is worth waiting for. Wait was about an hour from standing in line to getting our first dish. Our first dish was a loaf of bread with olive oil and balsamic vinegar, and the bread was delicious. Springy, and with good sourdough flavor. Then the pasta, which was the most al dente thing I've ever had, borderline raw. When I took a bite and looked at the center, it looked like raw pasta and was pretty crunchy. Three of our four pasta dishes were like that. For the price and the wait, not worth those dishes. The best thing about this whole dinner was the dessert. That alone was 5/5 stars. I will be back for some Okashi pastries, but not for pasta night. read more

Everything was fantastic. They have team service so someone is always making sure things are moving along. Parking doesn't have lines yet but maybe in the future. Cocktails are on the pricier side but the Penelope spritz was so refreshing. The bread and spread was soooo good, add some red pepper flakes for a tiny kick and it's perfection. The bread is so fluffy and delish. We ordered vegetarian since the meat pizzas all had some form of pork. We got the Caesar salad which was delicious and had spicy homemade croutons. Excellent pizza with sourdough thin crust and a gluten free option (have to order that a day in advance). Very good service, fast and friendly. The gluten free crust was great, but more like a focaccia style, in contrast to the thin crust for the regular pizza. Most of us liked it, but one thought it was too thick. I loved the creative combos of flavors. The appetizers were great - meatballs most excellent and the Burrata & Tomato was yummy. Ambience was casual and a bit noisy but relaxing. We went to this place with friends because they do a gluten-free crust if you order 24 hours in advance, and one of our friends has dietary restrictions. When we got there, it was packed. A good sign for a Wednesday night, we thought. We were seated in less time than they quoted. Also good. Holy hell, though, the service was so slow. I get that they were slammed, and I'm usually pretty patient with those things. It's just that our pizzas took over an hour to arrive after we were seated. During that time, we got one drink refill and a new water pitcher, but no one updated us on what was going on with the food or otherwise said anything about the delay. This place doesn't assign servers to a table, which I think is a recipe for your table to get skipped over. Still, I was excited to try the pizza. My partner ordered the O.T.C., and I ordered the Jackie Luna. Both looked great when they arrived but were ultimately just... fine. The cheese and toppings seemed very fresh, which made the ricotta-heavy O.T.C. the standout. The Jackie Luna was bland except for the maybe two jalapenos that came per slice, and I didn't detect any hint of the pineapple drizzle that was supposed to come with it. My biggest complaint, though, was with the crust. It was dry and just overall lacking in flavor, plus there were quite a few burnt bits that were inedible. There is better pizza available in this town. While we're at it, there is better pizza at much better prices. This place is cute, but everything costs at least a few dollars more than it seems like it should. Cocktails, even basic ones like your standard margarita, are $16 a pop. That's crazy for Tucson. You can go to a fancy cocktail bar downtown and pay $11-13 for a drink. The combo of okay food, slow service, and high prices means this one wouldn't be on my list of places to return except for one reason: the gluten-free crust. I am not gluten free, but I tried a bite of that thing and wow. It's not really a pizza crust so much as a dressed focaccia bread, but it was amazing. I would go back for that. read more

We had reservations to celebrate my birthday, and the food was amazing!! We tried the OTC, Figgy Piggy, Sgt. Pepper, Spicy Jimmy, my favorite was was the Figgy Piggy. Ordered delivery from Penelope while staying at the JW Marriott Starpass over 4th of July weekend. We spent ALL DAY at the pool, and come dinner time, we were craving pizza. Unfortunately, we couldn't really leave the hotel because they were sold out, and parking was at 100% capacity as well. If we left the hotel for takeout, we would have come back with NO WHERE to park. Penelope's to the rescue with delivery!! We ordered 6 pizzas. Pepperoni, cheese, sausage/pepperoni, margherita, and the Pammy. We loved all of the pizzas. In the future, I would ask for them to a bit more crispy. Penelope has moved from downtown tucson to Broadway and Kolb on the Eastside. Their new location has been a curse for past restaurants. Several businesses have shuttered at this location, but Penelope is here to stay. The pizza is wood fired and and the flavors are phenomenal. I highlyrecommend the OTC pizza, which has pepperoni, ricotta, cheese, and Mike's hot honey. They serve beer, wine, and unique cocktails. They recently opened at their new location, so expect long wait times. The food was slow to come out, but it was worth the wait. Cheers! read more

First time trying Penelope Pizza... Ordered the Bread & Friends and a classic cheese pizza. The bread was... not good. I'm ALL for some crispy char...this bread been turned to charcoal - and tasted like it, ate one piece and threw out the rest. Unfortunately the pizza was the opposite - nice char on the crust, while the entire center was woefully undercooked. Even with the nice char on the crust, it was super chewy and not crispy at all. The interior of the pizza had good flavor, sauce and cheese tasted great, just undercooked. Very friendly staff. read more

Love the pasta at Penelope's, perfect every time. The tomato sauce is excellent. There is a meatball lasagna on the menu, but there is also a veggie option for lasagna that isn't listed. One of the best pizzas I've had! It was cool seeing a pizza restaurant in the coffee shop. The dough was what stood out. It had the perfect amount of yeastyness and had a really addictive chewy texture to it. I love pineapple pizza so I immediately ordered the Jackie Luna which has a pineapple drizzle on it which added the subtle sweet essence of it. Hands down, fantastic! This has become our top choice for pizza. That being said the yummy doesn't stop there. The burrata and tomato is such a delight for the taste buds. Bread with friends is heavenly. Try the Ray Rays, locally made spiked tea. Soo good! If you are dare, the desserts are out of this world and yes they will even make you a yummy drink to compliment it. Run, don't walk. You won't be disappointed. I had heard wonderful things about Penelope and after giving it a try, I can see why. I like the set up for their service being that any server will help you - we had a designated server who was wonderful but I also love being able to ask anyone for help in case your server is busy. The staff were very welcoming and friendly. The restaurant is so cute inside - it's modern and I love the plants and all the green inside, it's beautiful. The food was absolutely delicious - the flavors were amazing. My only note was that my crust was a little overdone for my liking so next time I may ask for it to not be cooked as long, but my family didn't mind at all. In fact, my selective eater son devoured his pizza and wouldn't share with us so that is how I know it was good! We were able to meet the owner as well and he was so awesome and you see him doing all sorts of different things in the restaurant from helping the cooks to serving, he was doing it all which speaks volumes to him as an good owner. Definitely don't skip dessert - it was fabulous. I personally loved the Nougatine Semifreddo - it was like something I never had before with a very creamy and silky texture bursting with flavor. Penelope Pizza is a welcome addition to Downtown Tucson, located inside of Cartel Coffee right next door to Forbes Meat Co. I had seen them originally when they were the Over The Counter Pizza Truck on Instagram and all of their flavor combinations looked super interesting so I was excited to try this place out. We tried the Margherita Pizza which has red sauce, mozzarella, basil, olive oil like usual only they add Lemon Parmesan which really elevated the flavor. Also decided to opt for the Spicy Jim which had the perfect level of spice balanced with Buffalo Ranch, it was my favorite. Highly recommend adding the Simple Soda Co. Orange or Lime soda with your order, such a special treat with simple ingredients. We learned that their citrus comes from Agritopia. My reasoning for the three stars is the price point and dough quality. There are so many wood fired pizza options in Tucson and as someone who also makes my own dough, for me this just didn't compare. It was very burnt on some of the edges and missing the crisp yet chewy texture I was hoping for. I'm sure the prices are higher because of the downtown location, but for similar style pizzas at other artisan shops in town cost $1-4 less per pizza so that also would discourage me from coming by regularly. I loved this place! Highly recommend going with lots of people so that you can try all the different pizzas. Each pizza had a great unique flavor profile and was delicious. Even the simple margarita pizza was so amazing. The crusts are crispy and delicious. Margarita: Wonderful sauce and creamy cheese with fragrant basil on top. Classic! Pammy: This was a unique pizza with sweet cherry tomatoes and lots of flavor. Out of the 4, it may have been out-shown by the others, but still a delicious bite. Early riser: Now who doesn't love a pizza with egg! Amazing! Sgt pepper: My favorite. The flavor of the sausage with the delicious green chili and hot honey. DELICIOUS. My partner and I went for the first time the other day and got the mortadella appetizer (SO GOOD. The mustard seeds?! Give me a jar please) and one pizza each to really try the selection. Everything was wonderful from the flavors, our drinks, and the service. The owner is very present in the business and takes his time to walk and talk to tables, without feeling like an owner is checking in. You can tell he's present with his staff and communicates well, as everyone was very knowledgeable and friendly. We want to make this our Wednesday night dinner place! All of the items I tried were very good, salad, entree, and pizza. The problems that will keep me from returning are : not being able to order takeout because phones were not working, as a result I had to wait 45 minutes for my order. No reservations unless for a party of 10, and the lack of an organized system to deal with takeout. Even some of the smallest restaurants I frequent give vibrating beepers so you know when your order is ready. It was just a mess of people who kept going in and out to check on their order. The staff was pleasant and kept apologizing and the table setup has many people sitting at long tables, along with others. Pretty sad, because the food is good. I am from New Haven Connecticut, which claims to be the place where pizza in the U.S. originated. Well, maybe, but I am a pizza gourmand--"New York" style. Penelope' s wood-fired make the best crust in Tucson, and their toppings honor tradition (Margherita), while being innovative (Figgy Piggy, etc.). All absolutely delicious! And their service is perfect! The staff is so congenial and accommodating and even trustworthy. They saved and returned my credit card which I cluelessly left behind. Decided to give this place a try on Saturday as we just noticed that they were now open. Had a small wait - 2 parties in front of us. Waited less than 10 minutes to be seated. Sat a a high top. Service was very nice and fairly fast (but not rushed). Seemed like they all worked well as a team. Were able to watch the games too, which was nice. Nice vibe. Food was great. We ordered the tomato and burrata, bread and friends and a classic cheese pizza. All of it was delicious. Some of pizzas coming out of the oven seemed a little burned on the edges, but ours was perfect! I would definitely return to try some other pizzas and salads. Penelope has only been open a few weeks (in its new location) and it is absolutely FANTASTIC! My husband and I have decided this spot is now on our top favorite Tucson restaurant list! It was actually so delicious I went on a Friday, and had to bring back my husband the next day! A few years ago we tried Jared's pizza when he was a traveling pizza oven, and it was some of the best we've had. Now, he's in his new spot which is hip, spacious and vibrant. I sat at the bar both times and ordered a sensational bubbly cocktail and wine the second night. They have various choices of beverages like local beers, creative cocktails, and wines. Plus, NA options. They also offer pastas, which look outstanding! The service is also exceptional, with everyone working together to make every customer happy. We had an appetizer of meatballs and they were delicious and not too filing. We ordered the figgy piggy and crust was crisp, flavorful, perfect. His toppings are the highest quality and locally sourced and the lemon parm is outstanding! On Friday I tried their only house dessert and I've been craving it!
