This business does not support the West Philly community and operates unethically…read more The owner has been repeatedly seen taking large quantities of books from the neighborhood's free little libraries--those small, birdhouse-shaped boxes meant to provide free access to reading materials for anyone in the community. These libraries exist to serve those who can't afford to buy books, especially children and families. Instead of respecting that purpose, the owner takes the donated books and resells them for profit. This behavior undermines a valuable community resource and limits access to free literature for people who truly need it. It's disappointing to see a local business act in a way that harms rather than helps the neighborhood it operates in.

It's not slick like a Half-priced Books location, and it is packed with treasure. Mostly decent prices for 2024 and although I would say the science fiction section is either small or hard to find because it's mixed in with a lot of fantasy, it does have one and I bought some things I'm really happy about finding. I even found something from my to-read list that I didn't think I was going to be able to. I also found a copy of an Anthony Trollope book I've wanted to read for a long time, but couldn't find in the libraries I've tried. My husband went straight for the Christmas section and added some really lovely things to our collection. There's no place to sit, but the very nice person working there (the owner, I think) allowed me to rest my bad back in one of her desk chairs. I wish I had known about this place when I had more people to buy books for, but I'm thrilled to have found it now and I can't wait to go back. Next time, I will treat my best friend to a visit here.

We mentioned some previous books that our niece enjoyed, and the lady was able to give a number of great recommendations. All three of us enjoyed the experience so much that we each bought a book. The feel of store was unmistakable and left a lasting impression on me. When I enter Baldwin's, I am transported back to that old bookstore of my youth. Walking through four levels of books, it's easy for one to feel as if they've been transported to a bygone era, in which reading was the entertainment option of choice for most and still viewed as the single best escape from a hard worn day. Just when you think they couldn't possibly cram any more books into this old barn, you turn a corner, find all new nooks and crannies, and find yourself drawn to collections from every era over the last century. There's something other-worldly about Baldwin's that is hard to describe, but it's very easy to lose yourself for hours. The title selections cover every topic under the sun, with many of the offerings being long out of print and only available on the secondary market. The prices are reasonable, but make no mistake, this is not a discount bookstore. This is an independent seller, with books that you're not going to necessarily find at your big chain options. The service is friendly, very much in the vein of a mom and pop/private business. They conveniently provide a map so you can find your way around, and trust me it is useful. Guess I was focused on getting to donuts, but I'm glad I finally noticed it and now I stop in whenever I'm in the area. It's a smallish space, but well organized with a wide selection of genres. It's primarily books, but they also have DVDs and a small CD section. There are a few stepstools scattered around to help you reach the items on the higher shelves which I appreciate as a not super tall person. I find the CD section difficult to shop though, as it's on lower shelves and even with my glasses on it's tricky to read the small type on the cases near the floor. The employees are friendly and polite and always happy to help if you're looking for a specific title. I've only ever purchased here, but they also take items for trade-in, although you need to make an appointment for that. The prices are generally in line with other used bookstores in the area. Definitely sign up for their e-mail list, as they frequently send out discount codes. Unlike some used bookstores I frequent, I don't always leave here with a find, but I often come across a book on my TBR list at a good price.
