Patches on the mend and doing great! Thank you, Pender! Y'all are awesome!

My guinea pig, Patches, was in bad shape. He had stopped eating, drinking, and he had big gas bubbles that were reflected in his x-ray. Things weren't looking so good, and I had to make some tough decisions. Do I keep him in the hospital possibly subjecting him to even more pain, or do I take him home and continue caring for him in an environment he knows and feels comfortable, or should I go down the dreaded and unthinkable path.....euthanasia. Dr. Shearer was so great! She took a lot of time with me going over the options and explaining the implications of each. I never felt rushed which allowed me to mull things over carefully. Micheal was also fantastic, and he too spent time talking me through the situation and the options. He is also an awesome teacher when it comes to giving medicine, and I got it the first time after his demonstration. I am now a pro! Pender was willing to support me in any decision even offering to put me on an affordable payment plan which allowed me to choose the amount & timeline of the payments. Devin explained this with clarity and compassion which brought me much relief. Ultimately, I decided to take Patches home to continue caring for him and giving him the medication prescribed by Dr. Shearer. Four days after the start of all of this, Patches is on the mend and doing great! I have been taking my pets to Pender Exotics for a couple of years now, and I have always had a good experience. From regular check-ups to emergency situations, I highly recommend Pender.

Dr Hyatt and Pender Vet team are always amazing with my nervous rescue. they always go above and beyond . I've been coming to Pender for the last 30 years with all my animals. Pender veterinarian never disappoints. Dr. Peter Hyatt is so calm and really puts Rocko at ease. Thank you team for all you do.

Thank you for helping our family for a peaceful passing over the rainbow bridge for our kitty. Our 15 year old cat was very sick with lung cancer and was having breathing issues so we contacted Pender over a holiday weekend about availability for euthanasia . This was a very difficult conversation and the receptionists were very patient and understanding (Dee and Valerie) to include all the details & pricing requested ahead of our appointment. After arriving at the Fairfax location, we were given the option to wait in the car or go into a private office room for us to wait. We decided to wait outside to have some quiet time with our kitty and keep him from getting anxious. A wonderful tech (Tiffany) came out to the car to go over details with us and ask if we had any questions. Once we got into the office, our kitty was very upset and anxious so the tech came in(after a few min) to give him oxygen and Dr McKinnon followed into the room to explain giving a sedative to help him calm down, breathe easier And understand a possible side effect. It worked quickly to help him breathe easier and calmly. The next step was "the shot" and they waited for me to be ready before they administered this to let him pass. This process was so dignified and peaceful. They all were so empathetic and understanding of our emotions the entire time my family was there in a small room . She even shook her head to note he had passed. They gave us as much time as we needed to stay with him for our goodbyes Once we were ready, Brie came into the room to wrap him up (like baby) in a soft blanket and told us they would bill me later and we could leave out the side door. The whole office understood how emotional we were and so very grateful for allowing our fur baby to pass peacefully and not in pain. They offer a service for a company to do private pet cremation and allow the family to be notified of where their baby is at all times ,until his ashes are returned back in an personalized urn and a clay paw print. Thank you to all the helpful staff for being so understanding, empathetic and careful taking care of our kitty!

I had to take my Boy Grizzly here for an ER visit on June 16th. My dumb self was eating oatmeal with raisins and my pup Grizzly wanted some. And I let him eat a little that was left over. Then wonder if raisins were ok for dogs. Looked online and said not good for dogs. I was like freaking out. Can lead to kidney failure. I was searching how to make him vomit the raisins and I saw a vet video online which the vet guy said hydrogen peroxide and for his weight 3 Table spoons, and I tried to give him the Heimlich and stick my hand in his mouth to make him gag (come to find out from Pender vet that dogs do not have a gag reflex like humans do) but he would not throw up the raisins. Called the vets near us because Pender is an hour and something away from us. And I wanted a vet to look at them as soon as possible they informed me I should call poison control for the animals and I did and they said with the amount of raisins he ate he should be OK and time went by and he was still not acting himself and I was stressed and worried about him so I called Pender and got him in there, after talking to poison control again. Hew was still acting strange and they said if I wanted to take him to the vet that's fine. I paid for the animal poison control consultation over the phone and then I paid the vet emergency bill as well because I wanted my boy to be better and nothing was more important than making sure that he will get better.I let the vet know, he ate some raisins and I gave him hydrogen peroxide after watching that dumb video. ============== SO #1 RASINS ARE BAD FOR DOGS!!!! #2 DONT GIVE YOUR DOG Hydrogen peroxide!!!!! ==================================== He was not acting himself because of the hydrogen peroxide sick to his stomach and they took a blood test, and from the teatime results he was OK from the raisins but not to do it again they wanted me to come back and do another blood test the next day to make sure he was still OK which I did , and he was fine. But when we were there for the ER visit, they gave him a shot to help his upset stomach which helped him out a lot. I LOVE PENDER VETERINARIAN HOSPITAL SO MUCH! They ALWAYS TAKE CARE OF MY FAMILY. My Furry SON AND I, and animals we have had in the past. THIS PLACE IS WHERE ANGELS HELP OUR Fury Animal BABIES!!! They take fantastic care of us every single time!

When we had the "fab five". Starting at the top is Archie and going clockwise is CoCo, Tucker, Bruno, Chocolate.

Everyone at this office is genuinely kind and clearly devoted to what they do. They always treated Choo Choo with patience and gentle care--even though he was an anxious little guy (though the Trazodone probably helped, too!). When our dog got diagnosed with diabetes I took him in since I was worried about the potential eyesight loss that comes from that and she basically told me in very similar words: "if the diabetes doesn't get him the dry eye disease will". And left it at that, with the expectation that our 2 minute conversation would suffice. When I pressed with questions, I also learned that she had in her clinician notes that our dog had been basically blind in the left eye for last 3 years but had never told us that. We were only told over the years that he had "scarring" in left eye but never informed that meant he could not see at all. And one of the worst things, she was happy to tell us she can fit us in for pre-op whenever our dog does get cataracts (due to the diabetes). BUT never told us she doesn't actually do the surgery herself, or at hope center. So even if your pet did need emergency surgery, while hope center can do the pre-op, they will not be doing the eye surgery. It was very misleading the way she told me that and I only learned later that she doesn't even do the surgeries. I was heartbroken at seeing a doctor behave with such little empathy. Please avoid this doctor if you can, there are other local opthamologists that actually care about your pet that you should go to instead.

Dr. Pugh diagnosed that he had experienced a toxic reaction and suggested I hospitalize him overnight for observation. I was given an opportunity to say good night to him around 8:30 pm and I was happy to see him sitting in the cage looking good. Dr Pugh called around 11:30 pm to tell me that Ollie was doing well. He had a good poop and pee-peed but he had not eaten or drank water. The overnight Vet would call me after 8:00 am on May 24, 2026 to give me a follow up. Around 7:15 am, Dr Mason called, happy that I was up to tell me Ollie had a turn for the worst. She disagreed with the toxic reaction diagnoses saying she believed he had a brain tumor. She said he was circling to the left and hitting his head on the side of the cage. She also said he could not stand. The only way to know for sure if it was a brain tumor was to do and MRI, but that specialty was closed until Tuesday (Monday was Memorial Day) and she didn't believe she could keep him alive until Tuesday. She reminded me that some tumors are inoperable. Dr. Mason asked me to approve x-rays to see what might be going on, which I did. She recommended that I euthanize him. She asked that I come into the Center soonest so they could set up a time for me to say good bye. While in the exam room to say goodbye, Dr. Mason showed me an x-ray on her smart phone that showed a large mass in his abdomen. She opined that it had metastasized to his brain. After considerable thought, I believe Dr. Pugh's diagnosis was the correct diagnosis. Had I taken Ollie home at 8:30 pm I believe Ollie would have been fine but would have succumbed to the mass in his abdomen in the months ahead. Ollie was hitting his head on the cage because he was trying to get out. He was never caged. I don't believe that vomiting, rope drool, and panting, which I witnessed and rushed him to Hope for, are associated with brain tumors. On June 16, 2026, I attempted to take the survey Hope had sent me on May 29, 2026 only to discover it had expired.

From the moment we stepped through the door, every single person around us leapt into action to save our girl. I have never experienced an emergency to this severity with a pet and was an absolute mess myself when we brought her in. The team worked to quickly stabilize our cat and were so sensitive and kind with my husband and I as we were grappling with extreme anxiety and anticipatory grief. Dr. Watson was the veterinarian we dealt with in those first critical hours, and she somehow struck the perfect balance between professional and warm. She sat with us while we talked through the possibilities of what was happening, the plan for diagnostics, and the decisions we should be prepared to make. It felt like being taken care of by the most knowledgeable friend you've ever met. Once we determined our cat was going to make it and be hospitalized over night, we literally felt so comfortable leaving our girl in the care of the wonderful staff. They told us multiple times that we could call at any time for an update, and we took them up on this offer when I woke up in a panic around 4am. Dr. Beckford immediately got on the phone with me, providing me with a lengthy update and allowing me to ask as many questions as I needed to feel comfortable knowing our cat was doing well. The next day when we returned to pick up our cat, Dr. Shah took so much time talking through the details of her condition and what we would do to treat her at home in the future. Instead of just doing the bare minimum, it felt like he was caring for us and for our cat like she was his own. Even on our way out the door, every vet, tech, and staff member kept reminding us that we could call or message them at any point if we had further questions or concerns. They truly mean this - even after your pet has gone home, they will gladly help reassure you or answer questions if your pet's condition changes. Since this is an open concept ER, we watched this group of vets and techs interact with a variety of pet parents for 6+ hours and at every step, you could tell that they were performing above and beyond the call of duty to do the best thing for every one of the animals that came through their doors. We were on the receiving end of that empathy, thoughtfulness, and expertise at every single turn and I would highly encourage every dog or cat owner to keep this clinic in mind for any future emergency that you might have in the future.

We were completely devastated and hysterically crying as we rushed him there. We called from the car to let them know we were on our way, and from the moment we walked through the doors, it was all hands on deck. The team's immediate response was incredible. They met us with urgency, kindness, and compassion at a time when we could barely think straight. I can't speak to the medical treatment VEG provides beyond this experience, but I can wholeheartedly speak to the compassion and professionalism they showed us. Every member of the staff treated Freddy with dignity and treated us with so much empathy during one of the hardest moments of our lives. A week later, we received a handwritten sympathy card signed by the staff. It brought me to tears. That small gesture meant more than I can put into words. Service:5 Stars Pricing: 2 Stars…read more This past weekend, I had a very positive experience at VEG that was overshadowed by what appears to have been sheer greed. We brought our goldendoodle to VEG because he cut his paw; the laceration split one of the digits on his paw, with superficial flesh exposure. It wasn't the worst wound in the world, but bleeding persisted and it was deep enough that we needed to determine whether stitches may be needed. Dr. Forte and the technicians (I'm so sorry I did not get their names) were just amazing. And Sarah, who did our intake, was uncommonly kind and attentive. I had absolutely zero complaints with the staff. My sole complaint was with the pricing of a pain medication. I understand that emergency treatment is not inexpensive; it's just the nature of the beast. Still, when the Dr. said the total came to $400 for the exam, cleansing/bandaging of the wound and medication, I was a bit surprised so asked for a rough breakdown. The culprit, in my view, was a common, canine, pain medication, with which I was familiar. The cost was $93 for 14 pills. I asked the doctor if we could purchase it elsewhere and she said we could. When I filled the prescription at a grocery store pharmacy, I was shocked and then angered by what I learned. The prescription, for which VEG was charging $93, was $9.99 at my local Giant pharmacy. I could not believe (and still do not) a reasonable justification would exist for such an excessive medication markup. Surely, I thought, this chain hospital has access to preferred/wholesale pricing. Parasitic was the word that came to mind. I saw a business exploiting people already experiencing stress and vulnerability as the result of a beloved pet's sickness or injury. Although I was very pleased with the service we received, I am just very disappointed and troubled by this issue, to say the least. Certainly, this is not unheard of in the society in which we live. But VEG ownership/management, I feel you do a great disservice to the excellent employees who, clearly, work so hard to represent you in the best and highest light. With respect, do better...

I had a stray cat patrolling my house for months and decided to get it vaccinated and a check-up since it was outdoors for over a year and was staking out my birds going to my bird feeders. Once I heard a squawk of a sleeping bird nesting, I decided to feed the small cat. It would stop by day and night and rotate with the foxes visiting for any possible vittles. As the seasons changed and one arctic breeze passed through, the cat would still sit on the porch waiting for anything. It did not like the shelter I had built for it. It was needing care due to some observations made. There was a winter arctic blast warning that evening. I found this clinic by word of mouth about a program for strays. I finally was able to bring the cat in and am delighted that the staff are vivacious and friendly! I was very impressed by the comfort I was provided while making the unusual appointment ( I had never cared for a stray animal), the waiting area ambiance, the ease of paperwork, the visit with the amazing vet technician and Veterinarian! I held my breath as they courageously opened the carrier bag and they handled the cat with finesse and great care! I loved Dr. B's mannerisms and how she delicately treated this cat that had no human contact for most of it's life. Dr.B and the techs were absolutely amazing and I cherish this experience in all of my years of owning pets. After having stress for over 4 months immediately dissolved into relief for this cat. The cat's demeanor has been more relaxed since the visit. The clinic called to check on the cat and I am grateful for this and the overall care from this staff.

Our female frenchie was seen multiple times over a 2 month period before she was properly treated for a severe pyoderma and anal gland infection. We take photos, videos and document everything. Suffering that long, not being treated, is just cruel. Our male frenchie was seen today in ER after 10 days of vomiting. He is IVDD, post paralysis and spine surgery and has a multitude of health issues. After an 800$ fee, no answer, no treatment, still vomiting. We were told that VCA does not offer sonograms and that we would need to take our dog elsewhere. VCA is our primary veterinarian. Clearly not the place to take your dogs for emergency treatment.

My chihuahua doesn't warm up to many people, and after having a negative experience with Fairfax Pet Care, I was very cautious when finding a new walking service. Kim has built a relationship with both us and our doggos leaving us to feel confident that they are in good hands. Kim and our walkers have taken the time to get to know our babies and give us daily reports (including photos) of their visit. I highly recommend!

Kim's still provides a wonderful service - the employees seem to actively care about my dog, and I receive daily email reviews of the walks. Recently, however, prices have increased (they are still within normal limits for dog walking in this area, but no longer the great deal they once were.) There has also been a fairly substantial shift in attitude. Kim's is no longer accommodating to changes in schedule, and the warm, friendly tone I'd come to expect in communication with Kim herself has disappeared. I still absolutely trust Kim and her staff to care for my dog, and plan to continue using their service, as my dog truly likes the people who walk him. I am sad to have to update my glowing review, but with the recent changes, they are not what they once were. Original Review: Kim's has been walking my dog for two years now. Their rates are incredibly reasonable. Kim herself is wonderful, and made time to come see me 'off hours' to meet me and my dog - she was also the only dogwalker I could find in the area who was willing to work with an at times aggressive dog (every other company I contacted immediately said 'no, we don't do that.') My dog, who is very shy and scared around new people, took to her immediately, and was loving on her within about ten minutes. At first, she walked him exclusively, since he did so well with her. I was nervous when she asked if she could try him with someone else, but it went very well. I think there are three different people who walk him now, and he's never had an incident with any of them. She is thoughtful and accommodating - I'm a teacher and she is very understanding when I need to reschedule or cancel last minute due to sick days or snow days. The people she hires are high-quality and I feel so comfortable leaving my dog in their care (I've had very negative experiences with boarding other animals with other conpanies before, but I never worry when he's with Kim.) I really can't recommend them enough - they will look after your pet as though s/he is their own, they are professional and responsible, and leaving my dog in Kim's gives me such peace of mind.
