Butchers. It took me a long time to get to this review. I am very heartbroken, and I am in tears as I write this. I apologize in advance for being too emotional. My Sophie died in September of 2020 in Pender's custody. I still can't embrace it how awful this place was. Long story short, my pet rabbit Sophie has been admitted to their ER on Wednesday; on Thursday they scheduled a surgery for next Monday, and told me that she was stable, and could go home for the weekend. I found it hard to believe, and choose to let her stay one more day under the medical care. On Friday early in the morning they called to announce that she was dead. I think it's quite enough to get an idea on their professionalism. I blame myself every day that I trusted them. Another less important thing: when I brought her to the ER, she had few bags of treats, her pet blanket, and her prescription medications with her. While on my way to pick up the body that Friday, I called to let them know that I was coming soon, and specifically asked to get her belongings together for me. They just gave me a box with the body, no belongings. I was too emotional to double check. On Sunday I called, and reminded them about my request. A lady on a phone said that stuff "is probably in the manager's office". I said that they can mail me Sophie's things. They never did. Never called back. I have never received her personal belongings. Which I find unacceptable and heartless. I received condolences from other Sophie's doctors. From her insurance. From volunteer organization where she was a therapy animal. From everyone, but Pender. They just didn't even bother. read more

This is only for my experience with the after hours emergency services; I have used the regular services over the years and was very happy with them which makes this all the more disappointing. ************************ I had a late night emergency with my elderly bird. It took 20 minutes on the line just to talk to someone. When I was finally cleared to take her in, I sat in the empty waiting room alone as there was no one at the desk. When someone did arrive, he stopped my intake to look up information for a member of the the cleaning staff who was asking about her dog, which was not an emergency. Finally he told her he needed to complete my intake. My bird was taken to the back while I remained in the lobby. Another family came in and their pet was taken back as well. Eventually the vet on duty came out to the lobby and addressed both of our pet's situations while we sat there. I was told there wasn't an exotic vet there and they would keep my bird in an oxygen tank and watch her until the exotic vets came in the morning. They didn't want to give her fluids because she had a heart condition. This worried me but I tried to trust them. In the morning I got a call from an exotic vet who said my bird was ok, alert and was showing interest in food though she hadn't eaten. I described what her normal behavior looked like. We agreed they'd observe her and administer her morning meds and if she remained stable I could take her to my regular vet. When I picked her up around noon, the tech seemed surprised I didn't have a bunch of questions for him and I had to assert that I just wanted to take her to her vet. I asked if she'd gotten any fluids. "Yeah yeah, she got all that stuff. It's in her notes." When he finally brought her to me I was shocked. She had noticeably deteriorated and was slumped over with her eyes closed, in clear distress. "I made her a nest so she doesn't fall over" he proudly told me. I rushed her to her vet 10 min away and they ran her to the back. I knew it was bad when I was taken to the "consultation" room where they do euthanasia. My poor bird was extremely dehydrated and critically ill. Due to her condition, age and other health issues I had her euthanized. I realize birds can crash fast but surely someone could have observed her and alerted me about her true condition. Euthanizing her was traumatic in itself, but I will forever be haunted about her last 12 hours. read more

Unfortunately I found myself in need of their services..... FORTUNATELY they were able to accommodate me and my kitty. They were able to see her within a few hours of my panic call. SAKi had been throwing up, not eatting or drinking and was warm to the touch and a bit messy underneath. Upon arrival we were greeted with concern ...and of course SAKi was getting much attention. The veterinarian dr. Elizabeth Cranston was very professional and skilled.... My SAKi weighting in at 14 lbs....and having a slight temperature was not too sure of who was touching her and why...... she was not herself. They recommended a shot for her nausea. Some fluids since she had not been drinking much. And an antibiotic for her infection. Saki sleep the next 6 hours. I was still very Concerned as I had seen no inprovement. I checked on her before I went to bed. Still asleep. Through the night she found her way to my our bed, ( SAKi, me and her sister....lol. me and the kitty's) as she usually sleeps with me every night.....I felt her snuggling up against my neck. Such a good feeling... This morning she is up, had a little cereal...and is walking around. Looks like shes on her way. I've seen no signs of the pass to days...hoping another day of rest and the meds will have her back to her playful, fun self. Upon checking in here on Yelp, they offer first time customers a $25.00 off any and all services. Though I was so concerned about SAKi I didn't actually check in until after I arrived back home. Recently, we dropped off with the PenderVet (PV) front desk a fecal sample for our dog, Bubbles, who had been experiencing persistent digestive distress. We described her symptoms and were assured that the attending doctor would be informed. Also, PV promised to provide results of a fecal float test within 24 hours, as is their standard practice. After waiting several days with no result forthcoming, we called to find out that the costly test results were negative. While relieved with the outcome, we asked why we received no notice as our concern for Bubbles' health was great. The staff apologized and said that we could have assumed that "no communication" meant a negative result. We expressed our dissatisfaction with that policy and were told that our complaint would go to the office manager. After a few days, the PV Communications Director called to apologize and said that they don't know why the results were not conveyed, but that we could have assumed they were negative. As long-time clients of PenderVet, we understand the importance of timely testing/treatment that does not require us to assume anything, because mistakes are made, as evidenced by this unfortunate instance. read more

There was a time that I would recommend Pender to the moon and back. They actually saved my dog's life about ten years ago. For that I am truly grateful. However, over the last 2 years I noticed a drastic decline in their good service. I made the difficult decision to move my pet's care to another vet. He was a senior and I wanted the absolute BEST for him in his last days. No way did I want him to pass there. The dreadful night came where I had to say goodbye to my dog. I woke up late one night to him having grand mal seizures. He never had those, this came out of nowhere. My dog was still sprite and happy. I'm grateful that Pender was open during the night but I was sickened by the fact that I had to take him there. I actually stopped by two vets to see if they were open and they were not. I would have done anything not to go there!!!! And after what happened later that night, I knew I was right. It has taken my 10 months to write this review. I have had a lot of time to try to heal and really reflect on what went down that night. I don't want to be "that guy" and blame that night on the vet but I've replayed every moment in my mind and things could have been more graceful and peaceful. Less traumatic. They weren't. My little 5 pound dog was having seizures and they just kept coming. They didn't stop. We arrived and the doctor we got was very young. She acted very much like a deer caught in the headlights. She also didn't show a sense of urgency. She didn't speak or move fast. Not even at a medium pace. Her delivery about my options was terrible. She wasn't clear. They kept trying to medicate my tiny dog and nothing was working. When driving there I knew this was the end. I knew I was going to have to say goodbye. He was my life and I would do anything for him. I just knew he couldn't recover from 6 GRAND MAL seizures. How could he? So I was surprised when the young vet pushed for an overnight stay to try to get a handle on the seizures. When, after at least an hour, she still had not. When she was telling me this I heard him yelping in pain in the back. She didn't give me many other options. And euthanasia was NEVER proposed to me. I am sickened that I had to ask if that was an option. I asked if I was quick to just kill him and I asked why she didn't propose it to me. She said "I just want to save him." I had to ask so many questions when all of this information and options should have been given to me. I think about it today and I still don't think the vet could have saved him. While the doctor was doing bloodwork and trying to get his seizures under weigh, it took forever. He was yelping the whole time. Once the blood work came back clear, I made the decision it was time to say goodbye to my dog. It was tough. I always knew it would be. But this vet, she made it so much harder. I wish she wasn't there that night. Pender's "goodbye" room was the worst. The color. The coldest, hardest chairs. The sterile looking room. And while trying to say goodbye I could hear the other techs talking and working. So Pender, paint the room a solemn color. Put some soft chairs and touches in there. Maybe a small sofa where a small family can huddle together and hold their loved one TOGETHER when saying goodbye. I can't imagine each family member having to sit on these ridiculous chairs separately to say goodbye. Add a sound machine to drown out the others. And last, Pender, if you're going to have a vet on the emergency room night shift to handle the worst of all emergencies put a vet on that knows WTF they are doing!!!!! Someone that helps the pet owners navigate the worst emergencies of their life! Not some college grad fresh out of school (she was, I found out later). After all that was said and done I ran out of there that night. I ran because I was so happy not to look at her face anymore. I felt like I had done something wrong. I felt that I made the worst decision. I felt that he could have been at peace much faster that it took. He shouldn't have had to suffer that night as long as he did. Days later, I made an appointment with our new vet. After 50 minutes of solid face to face consult, she told me, "I advocate for the animals not for the pet owners. After reviewing his records, I absolutely 100% would have told you it was time to say goodbye, you absolutely made the best choice you had given the circumstances and don't feel bad about that." I have since adopted a new dog. We rescued each other. She has brain damage, she's deaf, had hip issues and had a traumatic past. On November 16th I rushed my beloved rabbit to Pender emergency clinic. I called them to let them know I was on my way so they could be prepared to take her and examine her. Her health was declining rapidly and I was not sure what was wrong. When I arrived, they told me the vet would call me when they examined her. I ended up waiting for 30 minutes before any phone call. This was an extreme emergency and they were taking their leisure time. I took the initiative to call them and ask for updates. They told me she had been placed in an oxygen box and still had not been seen by the vet during those 30+ minutes. We urged the vet to see and treat her ASAP so that no more time would be wasted. The vet finally called me back after 20 more minutes and said she didn't know what was wrong with my bunny, but would do a blood draw, X-ray, antibiotics and stress medication. They had me pay $800 before they would start any of those procedures. I quickly paid and the vet told me they would get started, which would take awhile to complete, so we should go home. About 2 hours later the vet called me and told me she was declining rapidly and they still had NOT performed any of the procedures I paid for. Over the phone they had told me she was in pain and had passed away. I rushed back to the vet and they took another 25 minutes to give her back to me. I called them while waiting and begged them to let me inside to see my deceased pet so I could leave with her. She was cold and muscles hardened already. The following days I did not receive any follow up phone call neither by the front desk or veterinarian I spoke to, they pushed through the $800 charge (which I disputed) although they did none of the procedures, and simply disregarded my dying rabbit when she needed their help. They prioritized the other animals in their clinic and left mine behind. I trusted them to help me and her, and left her in an oxygen box to die. I wish they could have at least given her pain medication and given her back to me while she was still alive so I could be with her for her last moments. I am heartbroken and still so upset over the lack of compassion from a so called animal hospital. I still have not heard anything back from Pender to this day. I recommend if you have any smaller pets which you love, please do not bring them here during emergencies. They will prioritize cats and dogs over your babies. read more

Over the last 15 years my dogs and exotic pets were taken to Pender. That ends today. They are out for money and not the well-being of your pet. I have a rescue dog with serious skin issues. After spending several thousands of dollars at Pender I went to a veterinarian dermatologist who was excellent. What the pender vets could not do over years of treatment was identified and resolved with a trifecta of oral tablets. The veterinarian dermatologist sent all information to Pender with the expectation that they would dispense her refills. Upon putting in the request, the Pender staff chooses to indicate that they will not refill and I should bring my dog in on an emergency visit - they are open. But they want me to pay an emergency fee. Their reasoning is that, although they have all paperwork, they want to talk to the vet dermatologist to confirm the meds that he ALREADY SENT THEM VIA FAX. Really?! The dermatologist had to give my dog medicine for a resistant bacterial infrctiin because Pender continued to give medicine that was not sufficient to deal with her original infection. I am so angered by the quality of care, the ineffectiveness of the front desk staff and the repeated attempts to boost their revenue ocer caring for the well-being of my dog...... If I could give 0 stars I would. Yes like all the other reviews mention about having to wait over 20 minutes every time even after making an appointment is true however that's not why I'm giving this horrible, mismanaged, uneducated veterinary centre this truthful rating. I've been taking my Australian Shepherd to this centre for the past year. In May, I noticed he began limping on his back hind leg. I took him to Pender 3x and even got an x-Ray done (all within first two weeks of May) Both the vets said they didn't see anything wrong or abnormal on the x-rays. They told me to just have my dog rest and see how he does. One dr prescribed my dog an anti-flammatory medicine but when I took Zeke back after 2 weeks, another Dr. told me not to give him that medication as it's best not to "give young puppies medication if not necessary". (How are two vets going to have their clients go back and forth on MEDICATION). Anyways, we took Zeke home (second time now) and had him rest per Dr's order (4 weeks total of resting now). Surprise, surprise he's still limping. I called again and the same vets told us they don't know what could be wrong since x-rays didn't show anything. They asked me if I wanted to come back in for ANOTHER x-ray and have their specialist take a look which would cost another $500-600. At this point we had already spent over $500 which is NOT a problem at all however we spent $500 that concluded to no answers, shrugs, medication that didn't need to be given, conflicting answers from their own dr's, and "lots of rest". I decided to take my dog to another vet in the area to get a second opinion and surprise surprise.. Just by doing a physical examination and taking a look at the SAME x-ray that Pender took, the new dr knew almost for sure that Zeke had Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease and he needed surgery asap. Zeke is now undergoing surgery because his femur has been degenerating this ENTIRE time. The new dr was very truthful which I appreciated so much. He told me he didn't want to waste my money by having me take another x-ray because the x-rays Pender took obviously showed that something was wrong with Zeke's femur and advised me to see an orthopedic surgeon. As someone who wants the absolute best care for their pet, I am gutted knowing that Zeke could have gotten surgery back in May had the dr's been MORE well versed in their expertise. How can other dr's from different practices IMMEDIATELY notice that his femur was showing problems from the SAME X-RAYS that Pender took?! The dr's at the new clinic were so shocked and "disturbed" that Pender told me they saw nothing wrong with the x-rays. I asked the new dr's if Zeke needed a new x-ray because that's what Pender had recommended and they denied it. They told me the x-rays clearly show there's something wrong with his femur and a physical examination also supported this. This is coming from TWO different dr's from different practices. One of them was an orthopedic surgeon too. I do not recommend you taking your precious pet to this awful practice. There are so many better veterinary clinics in the Fairfax/Centreville area. And not that cost is of importance when it comes to your pets welfare, this place is DISGUSTINGLY overpriced. I understand not compromising quality for quantity, however Pender cannot even offer quality care. Their company website states, "At Pender, we began with an uncompromising commitment to quality..." Please help me understand how you provided quality care for my dog? What steps did you take to ensure he was given the best medical advice? What informative guidance did you give to me to assist in Zeke other than 4 weeks of rest and medication that would later be recommended not to be given after already giving it to my dog? If your own Dr's cannot uphold your "vision of quality care" then how dare you state that on your website? Your principles fall flat and do not align with how your Dr's operate and my experience with this centre shows that quality care was compromised. I hope for those that are reading this review, seriously take into consideration the risks of bringing their precious pets here. I highly recommend everyone to review the "not recommended reviews" which are filtered out on Yelp. They are all the way at the bottom. I wish I had read them sooner. We live in the Woodbridge area and the emergency vet near our house didn't have anyone to look at our rabbit and they reccomended us here. We came for an emergency visit around midnight. They do have a 78$ fee just to see your pet so keep in mind! The staff were very friendly and took our rabbit in right away. She ended up fracturing her leg and they were able to do X-rays and wrap it and give us meds until we could get to pender exotics on the upcoming Monday. Our visit was around 400$ which I was expecting for an emergency visit. I'm not quite sure how it compares to other places. Brought in my dog after he jumped into our new puppy's crate and hit his head. We were terrified because our dog was vomiting and unable to move but the staff at Pender were super responsive and helped us calm down. We were scared to leave our dog there for a few nights but our dog Panda looked very calm every time we visited him and he seemed to really like all the staff members! I took my french bulldog in who was exibiting signs of dehydration and gastritis, the vet was most concerned with me understanding that the dog had acute hemmorahagic gastrits syndrome then coming up with any comprehensive care for the dog. A woman came in with an estimate to keep the dog for 3 days for an astronomical amount of money and when I informed them that I would have to take the dog home, I was given a dirty look and when I tried to engage in trying to find another option she turned her back to me and left the room ignoring me trying to find another option. The doctor then came back in and recommended giving fluids under the skin which I agreed to. I was then told to bring him back if he worsened. The vet team never offered to do blood work or imaging without me agreeing to leave him there. He subsequently went home and after a few hours he had a respitory concern and passed immediately before we could get him out of the house. If the vet team at Pender did not try for a cash grab and actually offered services upon checking the dog over like labs and imaging then this dog most likely would still be alive. The vet teams all or nothing attitude and how they communicated with me was very off putting. The cause of the concern unfortunately effected another of our dogs whom I had to take the next day for emergency care. I took our Golden Retriever to the Life Center in Leesburg and they performed an initial exam, came and talked to me about the findings, recommended lab work and imaging which was immediately approved. Then they came with options of treatment and a comprehensive plan including the dehydration levels and imaging results that allowed us to make an informed decision about the best way to care for the dogs well being. Ultimately I can say that if you care about your animals I would HIGHLY recommend not taking them anywhere near a Pender facility. read more

I can't say enough good things about the Exotics department at Pender. They have helped me and my rats through several emergencies, five surgeries, and three tearful goodbyes. I have always felt I could trust them for excellent care and advice. We have seen Drs. Eller, Reukauf, Fedderly, and Shearer, as well as pretty much every tech there, and everyone has been communicative, knowledgeable, and kind. I want to specifically call out Dr. Eller for saving one of my rats' life and giving her an extra year with me (a long time for a rat), as well as one of the techs, Mike, for walking me through the euthanasia process during a very challenging and emotional first goodbye. The folks at Pender have consistently provided high-quality care while demonstrating excellent bedside manner. They seem to love my rats and they always remember them, which is nice. I have never been to another exotic vet so I can't speak to how the cost of service compares, but I think every visit to Pender has been worth it for the level of care we have received (plus I have pet insurance). I begged the front desk to let me come in and they had to discuss with the staff whether it was enough of an emergency or not. Pender staff deemed my chicken's life not valuable and refused to take her because they were "at capacity" and it was not enough of an emergency. While I was on this call I was hung up on multiple times. I ended up having to drive two hours to a two star rated Vet in Baltimore where my chicken hung on for dear life. if she could have been stabilized and received care sooner this could have been avoided but instead I was forced to take a two hour road trip and ended up having to euthanize her. 24/7 emergencies are a lie at Pender and they play God with what lives are more important. I called at 7 pm and was turned away. Absolutely unacceptable, unethical, and disgusting behavior, and this is only the beginning. In February I brought one of my other chickens in for an obvious ear infection with Dr. Kaitlin Eller. The antibiotics helped some but the ear infection returned. I left her multiple voicemails and emails over the course of a month and she ignored every single one. What is wrong with this staff? Is that how you treat your patients by ignoring them? I ended up begging my green cheek's vet (Dr. Fedderly, who is the only positive about this place, kind, and efficient vet at Pender and the ONLY reason I tolerated this behavior at Pender to this day) to take her. Of course she did, because she is an awesome vet who cares for her patients. Unfortunately, I had the displeasure of a experiencing another dangerous and illegal incident at Pender, but let's start with the horrendous appointment. I brought my cat in for an annual checkup and she needed dental surgery. I don't recall the vet's name but I was uncomfortable during the entire visit and I was not consulted on prices like I usually am. Like I've said, I've been coming to Pender for over a decade and one thing I will say is they are upfront about prices and asking permission before performing any tests. By the end of my cats well visit, my total was over $500 and I was not consulted for half of the treatments or given any prices. I know most of these were necessary but I would have appreciated an explanation and heads up before I was hit with a $500+ bill for a check up. the employees felt so bad that I was crying and stressed they let me pay cash and some on a card which wasn't usual protocol because of COVID but made an exception. My cat later received dental surgery and was prescribed Buprenorphine which is a controlled substance opioid. The incompetent staff at Pender not only gave me my cats, but another woman's cats prescription! I was driving around with a controlled substance that was not prescribed to me! What if I was pulled over and searched? Riding around with unprescribed narcotics that are in the same class as morphine? And then the staff made me drive all the way back and return it it to them! I had to drive over 45 minutes each (1 hour and 30 min+ total) both ways for this idiocy. Now let's get to the absurd wait times. For a simple appointment expect to spend 3+ hours here waiting. I tolerated this because of the one vet I love, but having every appointment be over 3 hours is insane and unnecessary. And trust me I would know, I've had over 7 appointments total this year alone at Pender and each time it's been over three hours. Losing my chicken was absolutely devastating and I have been a loyal Pender customer for over ten years and was treated like trash and had my pet's life deemed not important enough and was hung up on twice while I was crying with no call backs. Pender had no problems accepting my thousands of dollars during appointments, but when I needed help the most during a traumatic time I was turned away. And I can't help but think it's because she was a chicken so her life wasn't as important. Their behavior makes me absolutely sick and my heart is broken into a million pieces. Stay as far away from Pender as you can. I will be finding a new vet center and moving all 11, sorry now 10 thanks to Pender, of my animals elsewhere. read more

Been a regular here at pender for quite sometime however every subsequent visit seems to have longer and longer wait times. Was sitting in the lobby for 30 minutes watching people who have come after us go in, be seen, and leave. When we were finally escorted in, they did apologize saying they were behind. read more

If I could give less than one star, I would. I have only ever had ONE decent experience with Pender. Other than that, they have only ever suggested I euthanize my pets (who go on to live many more happy years), manhandled my pets (they broke my hamster's leg!), or done absolutely nothing and just taken my money at the end. Last night takes the cake, as they said my pet went into cardiac arrest and proceeded to try to prod me into CPR, and when I demanded to see him first, then suddenly it had only been a fainting spell. They left me waiting for a full hour and a half after that for medicines and food formula. I live two hours away, and this is the closest emergency vet. They always do their best to take care of my Guinea pigs and I couldn't be happier. They are also great in communicating and don't mind discussing concerns over the phone. They are the only emergency hospital for exotic pets in the area and can be quite overloaded, so great to call in and check with them if you truly have an emergency or not - and they will gladly help you over the phone. read more

Update on the update: This is the only exotic vet anywhere close to me - and now they won't help my rabbit because of the previous review that I left stating my honest experiences with them. (Yes, the vet actually said this to me on the phone^) Good to know that you're too busy checking your Yelp page, instead of helping animals. This is America... Right? But I guess you can't have freedom of speech here. Very professional Pender. You've got over $1,000 of my money and now are simply letting my rabbit die. I stand true to what I stated before, they are only in it for the money. **A non-exotics vet did a 5 minute test that pender refused to do and discovered he contracted pasturella. -Funny how he wasn't sick till he first visited here. -Really funny how they threw medicines at him that purposely didn't work to not claim responsibility.** read more

This entire center has gone way downhill. If I could rate a zero I would. There is no follow up. You take your dog in / and bloodwork is done and you have to call and get a receptionist to email them to you - but the vet that took the blood never calls you back. Love Pender and in particular, Dr. Voell. Our family has been with this practice for many years and we are very very happy. We go out of our way to go there. Dr Voell has treated our 10 year old lab/golden mix and shown exceptional dedication to her care, most recently with identifying the source of 2 illnesses (Aug 2021 and now Jan 2022). He is a doctor with an "old time" approach who cares greatly for his patients & their owners. He has gone above & beyond the call of duty on many occasions, even providing care on what are normally his days off! He has a wonderful, professional, and caring demeanor. He has personally called many times, for both care and follow up. Several years ago, Dr. Denney provided emergency care & saved our maltese whose guts had been ripped out by another dog. Amazing surgery, care & long term result - maltese is 13 years old now and still acts like a puppy! Experience with technicians, aides and desk has also been extremely positive. Having personally observed everyone's dedication last week for dog's mystery illness, I saw first hand how hard everyone is working and their high level of dedication. Know that we are in unique times right now. Please be kind and give them a break if something or someone isn't up to your liking at a particular moment-remember they are human and are dealing with the stresses of COVID and a vet shortage. There is a great deal of pressure. Having had many years with the practice, I have a big picture, long term experience. FYI: this is a pure, unsolicited independent review. Dr. Johnson and the staff at Pender made for an amazing experience in getting our Doberman puppy's ears cropped and posted. Dr. Johnson is definitely the man and immediately put any concerns we might have had at ease when he took Ned in for the procedure. We sent him pictures of how we wanted the crop and he delivered! The follow up visits were just as good. The friendly staff and their level of training and expertise were top notch. They gave great instructions and were very supportive. The cost of the crop job was a LOT less than what was quoted by a local vet and they had horrid reviews. Pender and Dr. Johnson came highly recommended by two different Doberman breeders, so we bit the bullet and chose them, even though it was an hour drive each way. Pender's hours and flexibility were above and beyond what I'd normally expect from a vet. The facility was clean and comfortable and there was a nice little park outside for pet relieving. One nice feature: we forgot our leash at home for a late visit to Pender but found they had plenty of lender leashes readily available. What a relief! After one week of posting, we're happy with the results but will post one more time to ensure a good outcome. read more

After several years of going to Pender, regrettably, I have to change my positive rating to negative. The reasons - paying for an emergency appointment while having to wait an extended time for service, and lack of customer service for scheduling surgery. Last July I made an emergency appointment on a Saturday evening for one of my guinea pigs. I waited and waited and waited. They were busy, and priority cases were attended to first. The doctor finally assessed my pig and diagnosed her with a bladder stone that would require an operation asap based on its location and size. I paid over $400 for this emergency visit that included x-rays and medication. I opted to wait till Monday to have the surgery for it would be quite less expensive than emergency surgery on Sunday. Pender relayed they would call me Monday to come in for surgery. After not hearing from them I finally called Monday afternoon and left a message. I received two calls on Tuesday which was too late for my patience. I had been going to Pender since 2004, but now I have chosen another exotics veterinarian. I understand priority cases come first in emergencies, but why charge emergency fees to an existing customer who has to wait an extended period of time? Also, one would think there would be deeper customer appreciation for existing customers. read more
