Best Chinese food I have ever had! It felt very fancy walking in with white linen tablecloths and the European-esque style dining room decorated with gold painted walls with mirrors. I ordered the mango mojito to drink which was perfectly fruity and minty, very refreshing. The orange chicken was the special for the evening so I decided to try that, and I'm so glad I did! The perfect combination of sweetness and spice with chicken and fresh vegetables in an orange sauce. I've never had such fresh tasting Chinese food before and I appreciate that it wasn't fried. Not to mention the wide variety of fresh cooked vegetables, it was delicious. It's clear the quality at Peking is superb! The portions at Peking are huge so be ready to take home your leftovers! It is located off the street in a classic old apartment building, gave me a little feeling like, hmm, is this going to be okay? It turned out to be a really nice experience, nice bar area, dining room was spacious, nice amount of separation from other tables. White table cloths and comfortable chairs. Dated, but for a classic Chinese Restaurant it works... Server could not have been more professional or attentive. Portion sizes were healthy, taking home an entire meal (half of order is all I could eat, and I'm a big eater). Food is always spectacular, the drinks are very delicious, servers are very nice and it's such a clean and peaceful environment inside.

First time here. Staff was very professional. We were greeted as soon as we walked in and immediately seated. Our waiter was Scott, and he was great. He took our drink orders and brought them back right away. We weren't ready to order, but I could see him looking back at our table as he attended to other guests. As soon as we set our menus down, Scott was back to take our orders. We ordered the appetizer plate to start: 2 eggrolls, 2 tempura shrimp, 2 crab rangoons, and a generous amount of fried chicken. For entrees we had beef and mushrooms and chicken Cantonese. Both entrees were delicious and the portions were huge. We took about half of each entree home for lunch the next day. The executive chef came out to the dining room and spoke to a couple tables. I was disappointed that he didn't visit with us, as I wanted to tell him how pleased we were with our meals. Peking puts a sign board out on the sidewalk. For good reason. It's inside the old Landmark Hotel , now apartments and not everyone knows it's there. The bar is classic old style with comfortable stuffed chairs in the seating areas. Excellent wines. Special cocktails. The dining room is spacious with high ceilings. It's the hotel's old ball room. Elegant. We were there for New Years and the lights and decorations were magical. Food was excellent. My wife had lemon chicken and I had fragrant shrimp. Both reasonably priced and very tasty. The Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc were some of the best we've had. They were busy and service was slightly slow. But the owner was on scene helping out. That's a good sign in our view. Some reviewers have said its noisy but we did not find that at all. In fact we both commented on how nice it us to have a traditional, good restaurant in our city where there are so many brew pubs, grills, and TV bars. read more

I lived in the Wausau area for years and never ended up here until recently when I was visiting. I'm not sure why - the building and the restaurant are absolutely gorgeous. Restored while retaining the charm of the old building - chandeliers, fireplace, molding still intact. My first thought was, "I should have had my wedding here..." The place was very quiet, though we came on a Monday night. Aside from a mix-up between Vegetables Cantonese and Cantonese Vegetables (still not sure which one is the one I was supposed to order to get what I want...so be aware and ask questions about the differences if this is your thing), the food was very good. HUGE portions. It's very "family-style" so for a group of 6 of us we only actually ordered 4 entrees and a couple of appetizers. There was more than enough food and plenty of leftovers. We had several different dishes, but I think the table favorite was, of course, the General Tso's chicken. Someone ordered a garlic shrimp and noodle entree (not sure which menu item it was), and that was my personal favorite. Lots of flavor! I'd definitely stop back next time I'm in town! read more

The food here is very good with most dishes being of the authentic variety. Yes you have some Americanized options, but it's not exactly hidden if you look at the restaurants name....so any review knocking the place for having some type of Americanized foods are irrelevant. If you want authentic just ask your server or the chef/owner Jeff, who is happy to interact and accommodate. The building is beautiful and the bar is amazing. It is a decent place to eat downtown in an older building with good service. The food is quintesentially American Chinese, especially to the heat level, which probably makes sense given their clientelle is more used to what passes for Chinese Buffet in rural WI. It is what it is. Portions are decent size, food is freshly prepared, staff is nice, atmo is ok. Full Bar. Food is pretty meh. I travel all over the country for work and this was better than the 2.5 stars it had on Yelp. The initial entryway smelled like the old downtown building the place is but as we walked further in the place smelled like delicious food. Nice ambiance and decent service on a Friday after Thanksgiving. I appreciated the local beer selection (bottle or can) and the General Tsao's chicken could stack up with any I've had. Good potstickers, too, a little heavy on the dough but not in a bad way. Yum. Will definitely return next time I'm back in town. Took the parents here when they visited from out-of-town. We got the vegetarian lo mein, chicken cantonese, and sizzling beef. The vegetarian lo mein was disappointing. It was so salty that we ended up eating rice with it to counter the taste. The chicken cantonese was average, where the sauce was unspectacular and chicken/veggies ratio was okay. The sizzling beef had better taste than the other two dishes, as it tasted great with rice. My dad asked for some chilly sauce on a side dish to go with the chicken, as it tasted much better with a small kick. However we got charged $1.50 for it not knowing it costed extra. The chilly sauce was about nickel size and out of a container. Charging extra for rice, guacamole, sweet potato fries upgrade - I can understand. But regular chilly sauce? This is a first. The service was good, and the atmosphere is decent. But the food/prices have convinced me not to go back. read more

I first came to Peking nearly 20 years ago as a high school student who was giving swimming lessons to the owner's children - and fell in love with the ambiance. So when I visited recently and my dad asked where to for dinner- we went here. The place is as I remembered- plus they have (according to a becoming a Norcal bay area wine snob despite all efforts not to just by the number of wine tasting excursions and friends who drink "the good stuff") a surprisingly good wine list and Ketel One vodka. They also had some of the best seafood I have had - we had a Szechuan Seafood special- medium hot. The texture of the scallops and taste of the shrimp and lobster stood out and the sauce was spicy enough without overpowering the taste of the seafood. How a Midwestern small restaurant in my charming little hometown has better seafood than what I've had in SF beats me- but the only scallops I have had compare were at CIA in Napa. This was much cheaper! Score one for the hometown! read more

We went here to celebrate a birthday and ordered crab rangoon, egg drop soup, wonton soup, shrimp in lobster sauce and sesame chicken. While atmosphere was nice and the food was good--and you get quite a bit to justify a slight price increase (per plate it was $2-3 more than other Asian food restaurants in the area)--our server was not good and some of our silverware was dirty. Our server was not polite and pushy without being helpful (this was particularly evident when he tried to get us to order drinks without giving us much of a chance to even look over that portion of the menu). This may have been an isolated issue with our waiter since the other members of the staff serving nearby tables appeared helpful and polite. Overall, I would consider going again (with the hope of getting a different server), but there are better "nice" restaurants in the area and some are even within a couple of blocks from this location. read more

And the Cheng family treats their staff as family, hiring people who want to work but might would not otherwise be given opportunities to prove themselves. It is one of the finest restaurants in Wausau. My four favorite items are the Hot & Sour Soup, Chicken Fried Rice, Pressed Duck and Pork Shanghai (medium or hot). Enjoyed an excellent Saturday evening special of Seafood Cantonese. Ample serving for 2 with a good deal of taste. Contains shrimp, lobster, scallops and delicious vegetables. We always have this when we come to the Peking, so I can't vouch for other dishes. Also had dumplings tonight and they were served pan fried over a bed of lettuce. Just had a wonderful meal at the Peking in Wausau, WI. The desert of Bailey's Cheesecake was to die for....complete with the straw to sip any remaining "Bailey's" if we missed it. I know, mom taught me never to lick the plate but if ever there was a reason to break that rule...tonight was it. Plus the Vanilla Truffle and the Chocolate Martini were excellent. The service was terrific as well. It was worth the trip from Seattle to Medford to Wausau. Bar service was horrible; bartender made sure to serve customers who came after us when we already gave her our order. Only started serving us our drinks once we stated that we no longer wanted it. The food was salty; mediocre at best. The waiting staff was really understaffed. We were a party of 23, and they only had one waiter who waited on us when we made reservations a month ahead of time. When they proceeded to serve us our food, they didn't bother to clean off our table with the empty plates of appetizers. This place might have been a little bit better if the AC was on as well. I am a Chinese American who has eaten at all the restaurants in town that claim to serve Chinese Cuisine, and Peking is a stand-out . This is because it is the only restaurant that does not use sauces out of a common pot. Each dish has its own distinctive sauce created during the stir-fry process . The helpings are also very generous... My favorite dish is the Cantonese Stir-fry Seafood noodles which come with succulent scallops and shrimps that are never over-cooked , together with squid in a very nice sauce, and a generous helping of green vegetables. I also recommend the beef and flat -rice noodles, and the Shanghai soup -noodles . If you like steak, the pan-fried filet mignon is a real treat.. cooked medium rare, it's served in a savory sauce and covered with fresh bean sprouts that provide a nice crunch . Mimi, the co-owner/bartender , serves a very nice Blackberry mojito , and her martinis are all very flavorful . There is also a nice selection of wines that will complement the Chinese food very well. If you are unsure of a certain item on the menu, do ask for an explanation ... Don't be shy to ask for a spicier dish or to have them cut back on the salt or chili pepper. The front of the Restaurant is furnished cafe-style for casual lunch dining, while the inner half of the restaurant retains the splendor of the 1930's with gilded frames and chandeliers, and a rather formal atmosphere . For self-described 'over-sized' patrons, you could ask to be seated in the formal dining room where the armchairs are comfortably cushioned ... and of course,those large cushioned chairs are always available for your comfort... I have never been disappointed with my food at Peking, and I always bring my out- of- town friends to Peking for a nice meal .Friends of mine in Wausau would ask to go to Peking with me for a nice meal, since I know which dishes are Jeff's specialties . read more

This is the first time for my wife and I to try this restaurant downtown. We were very impressed by the decor and the music. The restaurant is large with some tables that can accommodate big parties. The atmosphere was nice and we like the light music playing. The waiter was very friendly and not overbearing. Also helpful with what was their specialties. But we were most impressed with the food. We ordered two dishes with the crab rangoon and everything was presented nicely, large portions, and made to perfection. We will definitely return. This was a nice surprise! read more
