Last week I wrote to complain about the pretend Chinese food I had at an establishment in Schofield. Today, I write to tell you about the hidden gem that is Lin's Garden. Not many folks would expect to find quality Chinese food in a place that sports several gas stations and Charlie's Hardware. Yet, there it is. Take Maple Ridge Road West off Interstate 39. Hang a left by the mills and veer right at the round about. Go over the river - but not through the woods - and to your right in a nondescript building you will find Lin's. Wanting to make the comparison with the pretend Chinese place, I stick with my go-to order, General Tso's. The service was neither slow not fast, but that happens with most Chinese places where orders get made after you order. I ordered a Dr. Pepper with mine and my wife had a water with hers. When the food arrived, I immediately noticed a difference. The rich, dark sauce smelled of salt and spice. The little pepper pods were everywhere, and when I breathed in over my plate, my nostrils winced ever-so-slightly as the heat entered my nose The pork fried rice tasted good, but any disappointment with the meal stemmed from the lack of pork in the pork fried rice. I have had it from other places that truly shined. For example, I will go to China 1 in Oshkosh and order ONLY pork fried rice because it is that good. But back to the star of the show - the General Tso's Chicken. Sometimes the chicken spends TOO much time in the sauce, causing the breading to break down and the whole dish to turn to mush. Not so the Tso's at Lin's Garden. With each bite came a distinct crispness of the breading protecting the tender chicken thighs within. Each bite delivered a rich depth of flavor, followed by the gradual singe of the mouth from the spices. Let us not forget the mighty egg roll that comes with your meal. Fried to a crisp edge on the outside, the egg rolls travelled a tender goodness on the outside belied the complicated crunch from the wonton wrapper. This is real-deal Chinese food at reasonable prices. Two orders of General Tso's with a Dr. Pepper and water ran $19 and change, but delivered flavor you'd expect from places that charge much more. If you are in the Wausau area and have a hankering for Chinese, skip most of the places you find...so that you can save room for Lin's Garden. Lin's Garden... Do you hate me? Have I done something wrong? The food is fine. It's generic Chinese-American food. But I have literally NEVER gotten what I ordered. Not once. Out of nearly ten times, since moving to the area 6 months ago. Every single time, I place the order and I get there to pick it up and they're out of it. EVERY TIME! Y'all! ORDER MORE FOOD SO YOU DON'T RUN OUT EVERY NIGHT. Especially if you're not even going to discount the replacement items or give them to your customers free of charge for the inconvenience! This time, I ordered sweet and sour chicken and steamed dumplings. I get there to pick up... No dumplings. They're out of them. Fine. At this point, I'm completely unsurprised. I had a backup option in mind already, so I ordered that. Then I get home and... THERE'S NO SWEET AND SOUR SAUCE FOR MY SWEET AND SOUR CHICKEN. And that's the last straw for me. So, the food is great here and staff friendly but I tried for 20 min to try and reach a place that says that they are open until 9pm so I could order ahead and not wait for my food. All I got was a busy signal. When I get there I'm told they only accept walk in orders after 630 so they can prep and clean for the next day!!! :( :(. Then put this on your VOICE MAIL ... DO NOT just take the phone off the hook!!! Ugh - why put the customer thru this stress :( And then there's the fact that I asked for extra water chestnuts instead of baby corn and I got neither corn nor water chestnuts and wc are my favorite part. Disappointed for sure especially since it's a 20 min drive from home :( one way!! We were making an auction pick-up in the area and decided to give this place a try for lunch. Set sweet order the Mongolian Chicken and General Tso's chicken. We did request the food to be extra spicy that they delivered on their promise. Service was prompt, The soup was a little cold and served in a plastic container. We come from the Seattle area so we can be fairly selective when it comes to Chinese food, but when you're in the middle of central Wisconsin this place is probably as best as it gets! read more

This establishment is the only Chinese Restaurant in the city of Mosinee. It's right across from the R-Store gas station. The restaurant has two entrances, a side entrance and a street entrance. The side entrance is also where you park your car since the place has a personal parking lot for its guests. Once inside, there are booths lining the walls and about 4-6 tables in the center of the restaurant. There is no wait staff, from the looks of it, there is only a woman and her husband who run the store. But the Chinese woman is extremely polite and quiet as well. There is a very expansive 3 page 11x7 menu to order from. Since this is a smaller shop, they don't have soda dispensers, but instead will give you cans of soda and a cup with ice. The portions are reasonable for the price. Expect to pay $5 - $7 for a plate. I must say, the reason why this place got my 4 Stars was because the food was so delicious. I ordered a Sa Char Mei Fun and wow was it spectacular. The last time I had a good Sa Char Mei Fun was when I was in China in 2005. The food is as authentic as it gets. I guess the best way to describe it, is that it has the "grandma's home cook'n" taste that makes you feel at home. The food was so good, I had my lunch and came back for dinner as well as ordered some to go. And that leads me to my last note, it seems a lot of this restaurant's business is actually the take out. Not a lot of people actually come in to eat inside the restaurant. Granted I was there on a Saturday night, there were more people waiting for their take out than the three couples actually eating in the restaurant. Ordered almost 30 dollars of carryout and pretty disappointed in our meals. Paid almost 8 and 9 dollars for Mongolian Beef and Hot and Spicy Chicken. I understand that Mongolian Beef comes with onions but I maybe had like 10 pieces of meat. My meal was probably 90% onions. The same went for the chicken dish. The plain lo mein we ordered had zero flavor but our side of white rice was ok. Super disappointed. I am mind boggled how people are giving such rave reviews with such basic food. This restaurant is located in the small town of Mosinee, WI so I was not expecting a 5 star meal experience. In fact the food has always been just ok. However, it is an insult to pay 8+ dollars for onions when menu items are priced based on the meat you order. So, if you are looking for basic Chinese food and wanting to pay ~$8 for onions and small amounts of meat this is the place for you. read more

I have driven past this restaurant twice a month for YEARS and never stopped. Last night I ordered a carry-out to pick up on my way through. Crab Rangoons were sweetest and best I ever ate! Egg rolls were better than average and house specialty fried rice and cashew chicken entrees were large and delicious. I won't be just driving past any more! read more

Really like this place. The food is always great and the staff super friendly. If I don't go there for some time, the lady behind the counter still remembers me and my girlfriend, often times she remembers what we last ordered like months ago. Chinese magic or something lol. I visited the area today for work, saw this place on yelp, figure I give it ago. I ordered the special Bourbon Chicken for take out. The lady was very nice and sweet, and the service was excellent! I live outside of Wausau which makes it hard to find anything but burger places. I am an absolute addict when it comes to Chinese food. However, there are a couple places in town I would not let my dog eat at. Lin's in Mosinee is one of the best places around for authentic Chinese food. It is comparable to what I had overseas. They were very busy with takeout, regardless the staff was friendly and efficient. I had Won Ton soup and Mongolian Beef. It was freshly prepared, well portioned at a reasonable price and delicious. I'm new to Town and wanted to get familiar with my neighborhood eateries. I am so glad I found this restaurant. At Chinese restaurants my go to dish is Kung Poa Chicken. This is my favorite chinese restaurant. It really is a gem. We all had great dishes. You get quite a bit, like any chinese place. I really liked their vegetables and sauces. It seems like a lot of chinese restaurants use only a few sauces through their dishes. This place had a lot of variety. Great customer service. They even brought us a free platter of Crab Ragoon.
