Peet's is a go-to coffee shop when I'm in a town that ha them. They may be chain-driven coffee....but they are always tasty and consistent . This location in Monterey always seemed to be busy (but not overly so). I visited the shop a few times while I was in town for a few days. Terrible baristas! I was on vacation in Monterey for a few days with my wife. She had a meeting to attend so I thought I'd grab a cup of coffee from the nearby Peet's coffee shop. Lucky there was one close by the hotel we were staying at. I walked in and waited in line. The lady seemed fine with everyone until I got to the counter. She was rude so tried to make her smile but she didn't want any joy anytime soon, at least from me. I suggested she smile sometime today and walked away. I tried to explain the situation with the manager but I could tell by my conversation with her, they were tightly connected and my feedback didn't matter. Always a great place to come to. But I had to walk to get here. It's a bummer that they closed the Portola hotel location. It was a bad decision (but I know someone in management still thinks it was a good idea) but Peet's is losing out on all the foot traffic of tourists and visitors near the Hotel and wharf. Those people or very few walk up a few blocks to the location that remained open. Why do you think Starbucks is growing so fast, they've made it convenient to visit their locations. 12/2/23 Both baristas were extremely rude particularly the red/auburn haired young girl. It's way too early to give attitude to paying customers. I went in on 4/2/21 I placed a mobile order and ordered ahead. I waited for over 20 minutes and someone took my order. They had to remake my order three times before it was correct. After 8:00 AM on weekends order ahead and wait for them to make your order so it does not get taken. They are very busy on weekends and overwhelmed with DoorDash orders. When I asked to make my wife's drink extra hot, boy did they deliver. They also have coconut milk as a choice which a lot of places don't. Only complaint was one day it wasn't extra hot. The Peet's location in Monterey, CA, near the Trader Joe's, has a major problem with homeless people inside. They take up a shocking amount of the seats and make no purchases, so what ends up happening is people like me, who actually buy things, have no where to sit because the homeless take up so much of the seating. The homeless also leave their stuff all around the store and walk away from it. Management has to do something about people coming in and taking up seating while making no purchases. read more

Really Rude manager, Jenny. She's brusque and it's clear to see that not only are the baristas there afraid of her but also the patrons who have to deal with her directly. She insists on making the beverages the way that she wants to and is belligerent otherwise. She's just nasty, loud, and should not be in a profession that demands good customer service. Poor baristas who work with her. When she's off her morning shift, the afternoon vibe there is mellower and the baristas are nicer and able to smile and interact better with the patrons. One who deserves a special shout-out is Jesse. When it's her shift, her compadres are also very sweet. Took me three attempts to get medium hot black tea. They gave me black coffee instead, had to return back, then small tea instead. I brought them back coffee they gave me and put for on the counter. This is by far my favorite chain coffee restaurant, they have a very hip interior, and nice workers. However the coffee is phenomenal to say the least. What makes this particular location so fantastic is that it's located between a very cool outside bar, and a chipotle.(With a Trader Joe's across the street). Highly recommend! read more

Yup, I've said it plenty of times. I love Peet's coffee! But as the girlfriend & I were walking by this Peet's from our hotel on the way to downtown Monterey, I was in a bit of a conundrum. I wanted some Peet's, but it was getting late & I didn't want to be up all night. Was there a way to enjoy some Peet's deliciousness without all the caffeine? Decaf? Forget it. That stuff is an abomination of Nature. For the coffee I brew at home, I buy whole bean because that's how I like my coffee... whole. Hmmm, what then? The girlfriend said she was getting a Chai Latte. What was that? Go to Peet's & not get coffee? I know it's Peet's Coffee... & Tea, but seriously, not get coffee? Wait a minute, though, a Chai Latte has about 1/2 the caffeine of a coffee. Maybe the girlfriend was crazy, or maybe she was a genius. I decided to boldly dive into uncharted waters & not get coffee at Peet's. We both ordered Chai Lattes. Service was friendly & our drinks were up shortly. Not-so-much to my amazement, because everything Peet's I've had so far has been excellent, the Chai Latte was really, really good. Just like Peet's coffees, Peet's Chai Latte is smooth & delicious. Who knows, I might choose to have 1 again sometime, even when coffee is an option. The helpfulness and friendliness of the staff is certainly hit and miss. While standing in line for 5 min. with no one in front of me or behind me, I would expect at least someone behind the counter to say, "hi, i'll be with you in a minute" or something. I think they need more training in common courtesy. The firepit which I loved, has now been turned off for quite some time now (at least the times I've been there). It was being turned into a campground by vagrants, so I can see why. read more

Why have I been going to Starbucks? Honestly... after drinking Peet's and really giving them a chance by trying out a few things on their menu I have no idea what I was doing at Starbucks. I feel like I've finally found God. Well, maybe not... God, but defiantly the God of coffee in Monterey. Peet's has a wide array of seating, only rivaled by East Village but with less lurkers (seriously) and more lighting. Plumes could not dare to be compared by Peet's, that horrible man that talks way to loud does not work here, thank you! And Cafe Noir is tainted with memories of an ex-boyfriend I'd rather not remind myself of... so Peet's is it for me. I'm a stickler for details in customer service and I'm quite surprised to read that people are giving bad reviews. I go there almost everyday and have never seen someone treated poorly by ANY of the employees. Some of the girls are shy and quiet but most of the people working there are very happy to help you, friendly, will explain types of coffee, drinks, and various teas they have for sale in detail and never appear frustrated or rushed. I am always impressed by the service in this store. They've got wonderful outdoor seating, it would be a great place to go on a sunny day. And the PARKING! When I need to study for 2 and a half hours I don't need to worry about a parking ticket... and that is so nice. You really should try Peet's. I love Peet's but this location kinda sucks. They ALWAYS make sure they get the phone orders done before the customers in line. You can be the only one in line waiting and they're too busy to help you and take your order. And then the coffee is rushed and doesn't taste as good. So if I could give zero stars I would but this has to have one star so that's the only reason there is one. We always order from Pete's coffee and we have been for the past couple years. There are times that the cups are either not filled all the way or spilled. Today's coffee was the worst yet. We ordered two Havana cappuccinos. One cappuccino was barely 25% full and the rest was just foam. The other was only 50% filled with the rest foam. We called to let them know and the gal who answered rudely told me that the definition of a cappuccino requires a lot of foam & what did I I want them do? Awesome Customer service Pete's coffee great way to talk to your customers who spent thousands of dollars there.So you're telling me Pete's coffee, that a large cappuccino is only supposed to be filled 25% with milk and coffee and 75% with pure foam????? & The second one was 50% filled, So if that was the case how come they both weren't the same?!?! The manager while I was telling her the issue was talking to either other employees or customers. How rude is that!?!? Only coffee place that was open on July 4th morning. As I was standing in the ridiculously long line, I noticed they had posters and signs everywhere advertising their new coconut cream coffee. I was getting pretty excited for it -- until I reached the counter, ordered, and was told they ran out of syrup a few days ago.
