We were looking for wide indoor cycling shoes for our Peloton and when we kept striking out online, we figured we would check out Pedal Power. As soon as we walked in, a staff member asked us how they could help and connected us with their co-worker who was "an expert in cycling shoes." She gave us two options, explained the difference between the two and detailed which shoe she thought each of us would prefer based on what we told her. She even explained the science behind what happens to our feet when we're cycling and that we would probably benefit from going a size up. I bought bicycle during the height of COVID. I was a newbie, had no idea what I was doing or what I wanted. Matt talked to me on the phone for an hour helping me pick out the right bike because customers weren't allowed in the store. Paul spent ages with me looking at accessories and showing me how things worked. Kendra has shared stories about touring that have inspired me. They've fixed, tuned, and equipped my bike, which in the last two months has become my most cherished possession, and literally the thing that has gotten me through the pandemic. It's good to have a bike shop like this near your house, and these days it seems bike shops are going away much like record shops. These guys have a big sales floor full of new and used bikes, a massive workshop in the back, and a big stockroom full of more bikes. The staff here has always been helpful and friendly when i was shopping for a new bike or looking for parts to tune up an old one. They let me test ride and compare a few different bikes and never made me feel rushed or pressured into buying something on the spot. The things I was looking at were pretty reasonably priced - maybe you can get it for a little less on the internet and wait 5 days and pay shipping, but I prefer to shop local and not wait for days. One thing I have come to realize is that there are a lot of different bike manufacturers, and not every company is carried at every bike shop - so to compare the bikes here to another shop isn't so easy to do because most shops carry different product lines. They seemed to have a lot of Trek, Gary Fisher, Felt and Raleigh here. If you are looking for a brand like Cannondale, Schwinn or Marin you will have to go elsewhere. read more

The staff are super helpful, the selection of bikes and gear is great, the prices are fair, and the overall vibe of the shop is friendly and fun. I was looking for a new mountain bike, having ridden my poor little Giant Boulder for the past 12 years. It was quite a big purchase for me, and I felt out of my comfort zone figuring out which bike would be good for me. The staff (esp Alyssa and Katrin) were really helpful in talking me through the options and my test ride. Even in the midst of the hectic virus situation, everyone I talked to were friendly and attentive. Furthermore, I had an issue with my payment method, which they took the time to resolve, even though it was a hassle for them. It was quite stressful at the time, and I'm really grateful to Alyssa and the owner for figuring it out. Now I have a gorgeous Salsa Timberjack! I own two Giant Iguana mountain bicycles that needed routine maintenance (it's been 10 years with no maintenance whatsoever). We are going on vacation in 2 weeks and would like the maintenance done before we leave, since we are bringing the bikes with us. I contacted Pedal Power based upon the many good reviews here (ignoring the few bad reviews because some people just like to complain). The person answering the phone told me, "No problem! Bring them in ASAP and we'll have them ready for vacation!" She even went over the various maintenance packages they have available, as well as the prices. I immediately brought in the bikes and was greeted by Gary (one of the owners) and Spencer (a mechanic). I explained what I needed and they both thanked me for thinking ahead and bringing them in 2 weeks prior to our vacation (since they are extremely busy). Spencer went over the bikes with me and I explained what I needed done. He said he'd go through the bikes top to bottom and fix / adjust anything that needed adjustment. He gave me a quote that was "the maximum" it would cost and told me it would most likely be less. He also arranged it so I'd have my bikes back a few days before vacation, so I could try them out for a few days. He said he'd text me when they were done. I received a text from them 4 days EARLIER than he quoted, stating the bikes were done! Went to pick them up and as he stated, the price was lower than quoted. Took the bikes home and they ride like a dream now. I must say it was a pleasure to work with Pedal Power, from the instant I walked in to when I picked up the bikes. Every single person that assisted me was very friendly, courteous and professional. I will definitely bring my bikes back to them again when they are in need of maintenance. I also purchased a bike rack from them to fit our Honda CRV. They came out into the parking lot and set the entire thing up for me, showing me exactly how to do it, which was nice. In these difficult times, I just wanted to give a huge shout out to Kendra from Pedal Power. We traveled all over the shoreline trying to find an adult small bike that still had fun kid colors last month (my 8 y.o. girl is tall and wanted black and hot pink - btw, did you know there's been a bike shortage since last Spring?). After being told "come back and check with us later" I drove to my hometown, Middletown, where PP took down my info and called me when some possible options came in. We got the call Friday to come in Saturday. Now here's where the big shout out comes. When we arrived yesterday, my little "liked" the option but didn't "love it". After hearing my daughter's wishes, Kendra went above and beyond. Instead of a "check back later" she came up with solutions - tricking out a plain black bike with all sorts of fun hot pink accessories so my girl could celebrate her bike as a kid. This place is awesome. I bought our first bikes here in 2016. The owners and employees are very knowledgeable and helpful. The customer service is as good as it gets. It starts at the sale and all the follow up is fantastic. When you bring your bikes in for a tune up or to get checked out, they do it right in front of you and give you a full explaination of what is needed. There will not be any surprises when you pick it up. I had an issue with a very expensive accessory I bought five years ago and one of the owners was able to secure a replacement for me from the manufacturer at zero cost to me. That right there is customer dedication at it's highest level. I know very serious bikers that go there as well and they completely praise them. This is one of the best bike shops in Connecticut. If you look across the web you'll see a large amount of feedback to help you be your guide, with plenty of anecdotal stories. The vast majority of feedback is positive. I won't share another story, but I think their strength comes from a few areas. I should also note that my review is for all Pedal Power shops, though Middletown is the shop I mostly go do, and am most familiar with. First, they have three shops in the state, and a warehouse. So if you don't see a bike in the shop, ask them. Even if you don't want to go to another location, they can get it to you usually the next day at your shop. If you like a specific bike of a brand they carry but they don't have it in stock, they can often get you one in days. Next, Pedal Power has a reputation of treating it's employees well. I don't know the details, but believe they offer perks like a 401k, and had health insurance for all employees before the ACA required it. This is pretty socially responsible for being a small business with a few dozen employees. This enlightened self-interest has created low turnover in the shops, which translates to a more knowledgeable and motivated staff, which means better customer service overall. Where as in many other shops, if you get the owner you get great customer service, if you get a regular staff member, it's hit and miss. Another nice advantage is that Pedal Power sponsors weekly group rides for riders of all levels. Both on the road, and mountain bikes. They also sponsor bike demo rides at various times of the year. This is a great way to both test ride bikes, and meet other riders of your ability. Some other bike shops do as well, but I don't think any do as many as Pedal Power. It should be stated that I don't only shop at Pedal Power. There are brands and items they don't carry for example. And due to fairly dense population and favorable riding roads and trails, there are a lot of riders, and thus a lot of good bike shops in the region. I've been to a few shops that probably equal Pedal Power. Suburban Bike, Bicycles East, Cheshire, The Devil's Gear, and if you're willing to go out of state, you'll find several in Mass and NY. There's probably more I haven't been to as well that are good shops. That's the great thing about competition in business. Pop in a few times, ask some questions, see what shop fits your vibe. I'm just speculating for the majority of people, Pedal Power is going to be at or near the top of their list, like it is mine. read more

I was looking for tires for my friend's mountain bike. The shop grom came out to help me and I asked for Kenda Nevegals, one of the most popular tires made because of its great grip and versatility. Now I came by in wintertime, when stock levels are low, so I wasn't expecting much. But the kid was like, "Never heard of it". I couldn't help myself when I pointed out he is standing next to a bike with Nevegals! Like I said, it is a popular tire so half the mountain bikes in the shop had them. Bwhahaha! read more

Decided to purchase a road bike after not having one for 20+ years (only had a MTN bike). I visited both the Essex and Middletown locations and test rode bikes at both. I tried about 6 bikes over 2 different visits and both times had a ton of support from the staff with regards to sizing and components. I ended up with a bike I love (Trek Emonda) and just had my first ride which was sweet. Everyone who helped me with the bike, shoes, bib, helmet, wahoo, etc.. was totally helpful and friendly. I brought my bike in a couple of months ago and they completely destroyed my bike's wheel alignment. It is now unridable and it will never ride the same way again, even if i get it completely overhauled. When I complained at the time they completely ignored me and rushed me out the door. This store is entirely too aware it is the only bike shop in town. They also chipped the right hand side of my frame in two places. Judging from the dents I would guess it was from a drop. Once again- ZERO ACCOUNTABILITY. They denied the entire thing and essentially told me to shut up and get out. I am frankly disgusted by the this company's refusal to accept responsibility for its mistakes. I am not the only other person this has happened to- 2 of my colleagues have also had their bikes damaged by these people. Do not trust this business, THEY WILL BREAK YOUR BIKE. read more

this shop is great! probably the best all around bike shop ive ever been inside! huge selection of completes & parts and a hard working friendly staff. I've never gone inside this shop and the first time i did i had at least 3 offers to be helped. if you do take any one of the staff up on the offer get ready for an education! Everyone there is passionate about bikes and they even have a local Pro rider as part of the floor staff! They will spend as much time as needed for you to leave the shop confident that A) what you bought was a great decision or B) when you go to the next place to shop around you'll be wishing you were back at Pedal Power! it's hard for me to want to go to a bike shop because i do know how to work on my own stuff and i'm very picky about what parts i ride. I brought 2 bikes here to get them repaired. Both of them were in extreme disrepair, and these guys made them as good as new. I also bought a bike for my daughter here, and I have found their prices to be reasonable. I have found that all of the people that work here are extremely friendly and will go out of their way to help. I'm not a big bike rider, and I know that some "riders" can be a bit obnoxious to deal with if you're do not ride a lot...but I found these guys to be really helpful even in helping me with my old, cheap, beat-up bikes. There was a small issue with the repairs on one of the seats on the bike, but the important thing was that these guys made it right. I talked with the manager, and he clearly understands that "the customer is always right." He also offered for me to bring my bikes in anytime if they do not seem to be riding right. They called me when promised with a status and it was ready on schedule when I got back. Cost was reasonable (~100 for parts and labor, including a severed cable that had to be replaced). If I could, I would rate 3.5 stars. Be sure to check out upstairs if you are at all into bikes, they have some lugged italian beauties hiding up there with terrifying pricetags. This is a bike shop focused on Speedo racers and college kids -- while they do carry some of the standard fixed-gear offerings from FELT, Raleigh, etc. and have a small BMX section, these areas are not nearly as choice-laden as in some other shops. Good collection of general bike accessories, gloves, lights, fenders, patches, etc. They even carry Chrome messenger bags, which is surprising. All in all, I'm really really glad to have this in Middletown. That said, the service department can be hit-or-miss. There are some extremely competent people who will go out of their way to make sure all the work they do is perfect, and then there are some people that, frankly, might not tighten all the hex-bolts all the way all the time.... which can be dangerous. If you're having a bike put together from scratch by them, be sure to give it a once over, check for any loose components, preferably in the parking lot right out the back door. Definitely check this place before you drive out of your way, it probably has something you need. read more

I caught the bike riding bug while with friends on vacation in January. Upon my return to Connecticut, I researched bike shops and found my way to Pedal Power in Middletown. Katie was super helpful on my first visit. From the start, I felt like her goal was to get me on a bike that was right for me. She asked good questions about use, purpose, lifestyle, and goals. Then she used that information to show me some options. One week later when I returned to try out more bikes, Bill walked me through to my final purchase. Everyone was patient. They allowed me to ask a bunch of questions, test rode a few bikes and two hours later I was driving home with my new bike. Bill even helped me pick out a trainer to use for the winter months. While I was waiting on my bike to be ready to take home, the young man (sorry forgot his name) helped me look for trails at local state parks where I could take my type of bike. I was visiting friends for the weekend and brought my new folding bike with me (never used before). I thought my friends had a pump for the tires, but they didn't, so I walked down to Pedal Power hoping to use theirs. Not only were they super nice and let me use their pump, they noticed that I hadn't correctly assembled my bike and helped me out with getting the headset correct, which prevented potential damage to my new bike.
