First off they made us pay everything up front before we could even see the doctor. They reassured us that insurance would pay back what was owed to us. Proceeded with the worst experience ever. My temporaries never made it lady two days. I was either snaggle tooth or toothless after paying thousands of dollars. Even after getting the permanent teeth they could only offer a couple of "white" options, fast forward... now they are saying we owe $2,500!! They have the nerve! Bait and switched and no follow-up. My wife and I both tried this practice and were very disappointed in the process. The issue is they have many doctors, but the right hand is not talking to the left. My wife and went in, did a full exam, scans, etc, told us we had to talk to another dr, setup a different appt, ran the same exams, charged us twice for the same twice. It appears from what I think is this is their way to bill you to death with the same job between two sperate doctors withing the same company. Another issue. When they quote you what the insurace will pay and my out of pocket expenses will be... both times with two seperate patients they got is way wrong. And when I showed up for my prcedure, I had to pay it. Even thought i spent thousands more than quoted. Antoher time I went in, told me I had to meet with another Dr. Setup an appt, came in to be told that I didnt need to meet with a Dr. Another waste of time and money. Something is not right about this firm and not claiming they are doing it fraudulantly but it stinks like it is. Its adisorganized business that maybe has outgrown their successes. i've been going to Pearl affection since I moved to Frederick and I don't have anything bad to say about the staff and or the services received. It's always very clean and the staff is very informative and make sure you're comfortable and know what's going on. I love my hygienist. She always remembers me even though she only sees me twice a year. She makes it feel like she just saw me yesterday. Building relationships with your care team is very important and I feel that everyone I've come in contact with in this office has been nothing but polite and willing to help. Going to the dentist is not fun but coming to this office makes it that much easier. Danielle is the best. read more

I can see why they get poor reviews. I started going to them last year from another dentist that was not that great. I had to get a tooth pulled but based on the medication I was on they had to reach out to the other doctor. They did this all on their own. The other doctor wanted to do some tests and I had a year to have the procedure or pay 100.00. The 100.00 isn't the issue if I had to do it. It's there lack of communication. They send texts saying you are past due, and this started after 6 months, but I had a year. I kept replying to the text, but there was no response either way. Now they say they have switched to this technology like other businesses and it is my responsibility to call. Heaven forbid I am the customer. My other doctor notified them, but I had no idea I was supposed to call them. Needless to say, I don't think anyone should do business with these very arrogant people. The staff during my consultation was fantastic and I'm sure the quality of care is great, but they will absolutely lie about being in network for your insurance provider. I went here explicitly for wisdom teeth extraction and was told as long as I had Delta Dental PPO I would be covered. Turns out after the consultation that ALL OF THEIR SPECIALIST aren't a part of Delta Dental and I was charged out of network costs, wasting a month of my life as I now have to start over with another practice. Don't make my mistake and do your own homework to make sure the specific provider is covered under your insurance because they absolutely will not tell you. read more

When my husband called and asked them if they work with our insurance company. They told him yes which was not true. They were not in network with our insurance company so it has now cost us over $700 out of pocket for his 2 appointments. They should of told us they were no in network with our insurance company. I decided to give them another try... thinking they may have changed because Dr Lawson is great! But.... I do not recommend for routine cleaning.. a definite no for kids. My daughters were just there again for their cleaning and I didn't like that they didn't provide courtesy bags.. i.e. toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss.. They are the first dentist I've been to that does not provide this - especially for kids. Financial department is horrible!!!!! Inaccurate estimates that aren't even close to the procedure cost. Charging customers upfront knowing they will be paid by customers insurance and making customers wait months for refunds, although they know insurance has covered the procedure cost. Head of finance was rude, accepted no accountability for the mistakes/overcharges and had the audacity to tell me not to contact the better business bureau in the future, but to only contact their office as if I didn't speak to the office manager and was still inaccurately charged after I provided printouts of the correct cost of the procedures. read more

If I could give this place a zero star I would. Very deceitful when it comes to benefits, they told me the accept my insurance when in reality they are out of network. Being in healthcare I know when checking benefits they knew they were out of network but don't tell you until you receive a large bill. A woman called me today stating they have been calling since July of last year...lies this is your first time calling and telling me the account will go to collections. Beware of deceitful billing procedures!!!!!! I'm a bit surprised that this practice has such great reviews on Google - perhaps all the negative reviewers came to Yelp, and the practice goes out of their way to solicit reviews on Google from only happy clients. But my experience with them was terrible. I scheduled an initial appointment, for which I was told to allot 90 minutes. I ended up having to fill out a lot of paperwork at the beginning (why couldn't this be done in advance, via e-mail or their web site?). Then, they did x-rays and an exam, but no cleaning or other dental work although I told them I had specific issues I wanted addressed when I contacted them in the first place. Then, they set two separate appointments for a cleaning and MINOR dental work, which I was told they would confirm by e-mail (I had e-mailed with them previously when inquiring about going to the practice, so I knew I had no issues receiving e-mail from them, and I specifically asked if they would confirm appointments that way so they gave me no paperwork regarding future appointments). After more than a week not hearing from them, I called to figure out the appointment schedule and was told the first one was a day away! At that point, I had a work conflict, so I asked to reschedule. This time, they confirmed the schedule over e-mail. However, when I called on the way to the appointment to let them know I was running five minutes late, they claimed I had never confirmed the appointment! This is although I could show them the e-mails back and forth confirming everything. After wasting time being put on hold, asked another question, put on hold, asked another question, and so on...they ultimately disconnected me (by accident, on purpose - who knows?)! But they never called back that day, or the next, or the next... The final straw is that they just called me today to ask why I wasn't there for my 1:00pm appointment given that it was 1:10pm - but I was completely unaware of an appointment at 1:00pm. I never would have agreed to such an appointment since I had an all day meeting for work yesterday and today. When I said, "I think I am done with this practice.", the front desk person said, "That's alright sir, I think the feeling is mutual..." and, in the snarkiest possible tone, she added, "...you have yourself a nice day." When I commented that this treatment was unbelievable, she repeated even more sarcastically, "You have a nice day." and hung up. There are at least another DOZEN dental practices within a couple of miles of this one - I strongly suggest you choose one of them - I will be. read more

I switched to Pearlfection because my normal dentist was booked up and backlogged due to COVID. Pearlfection was available and accommodating. Their staff are friendly and they have a wonderful office. For those reasons alone, I would give them 5 stars. My issue came when my oldest son needed his wisdom teeth pulled. So, much like I did when I had my wisdom teeth pulled, I called the dentist office and made an appointment. Unlike my other dentist, however, he consoled and gave me a referral to an oral surgeon who was in my network. Pearlfection, on the other hand slides a $4,000 dollar estimate at me and schedules me into their calendar. Come to find out, cleanings, and other general work, Pearlfection is in-network. Their oral surgeons are not in my network. One could argue that I should be looking at that, and I should know to ask these questions...but on the other hand, why wouldn't Pearlfection just be straightforward and transparent about these charges? They said absolutely nothing at all to why I would owe $4k. Felt a bit taken advantage of and let down by this. I might have learned my lesson and kept going back until I received an hour invoice from a console for a doctor not in my network...I'm going back to my older dentist. read more

Not very happy with the billing department. I owed them for a bill and I paid it off and then I went to get something else done the young lady at the desk said that there is a payment before I get it done so I paid it and she said once your insurance goes through you should get it back. I called back when my insurance went through everything was paid and the young lady that supposed to be in the billing said oh you owed that money from back in 2019 well that is not what the young lady at the front desk told me. I went in for a routine cleaning. The hygienist broke my custom-made night guard while cleaning in the ultrasound machine. Huge hassle. Now waiting 2-months for an appointment to see my specialist to have it rebuilt or made again from scratch. Huge impact on quality of life; no night guard means my TMJ gets significantly worse. The first time I came the hygienist was so rough I was almost in tears which has never happened, the second time was fine, the third time I got to appt and the dental hygienist called in sick which I completely understand but nobody called me to let me know. Patient beware; Make absolutely certain that they are in network with your dental insurance before you go. I asked if they "took" my insurance and they said yes. What they meant was: We are OUT-OF-NETWORK but will file a claim with your insurance which they never specified. I only found out when my insurance notified me of the claim and let me know I owed them $153 for xrays and nothing else (They schedule xrays first and cleanings on a completely different day afterwards. Very odd). So if you have Metlife, do NOT go here. Otherwise, very clean, very professional, very nice. Just a little dishonest due to lies by omission. Which for me is a deal breaker. read more

Celi is the absolute best dental hygienist I have ever had. She takes excellent care of me and I always learn something new from her to add to my dental routine or make sure I am diligent about at home. Dr. Lawson is also fantastic. He has the best bedside manner (not sure if you call it that with dentists but you know what I mean) and always gives an honest assessment. He never makes me feel like I have to have something done if it isn't absolutely necessary. I feel like I am always in very good hands with them! read more

I was scheduled for an appointment on 7/3/18. When I walked in, the receptionist said that I was responsible for an amount of 1/2 of the fee for that day. When I stated that my insurance covers 80%, she said that my fee was based on what they had received from the insurance company. I said that was not going to keep my appointment and she then told me there was a $50.00 cancellation fee. I then told them that "They know what they can do with the cancellation fee, based on the fact that I thought they were trying to over-charge me". On 7/5/18, I phoned my insurance company. 1. They said that fillings are considered "Basic Restorative" service and is covered at 80%. 2. They never received a pre-authorization for the fillings. I do feel like they are always trying to sell something. Based on this experience, I do not believe that I will be returning. read more

I contacted Pearlfection based off of ratings. I needed a wisdom tooth extracted. Dr. Chang was the Dennis her extracted my tooth, he was very professional and his staff was very friendly. This is a new facility off of Thomas Johnson Drive. I was pleasantly surprised at the cleanliness and not just in the waiting room area but the bathrooms and the separate doctor patient areas. I was very nervous going in because I've always heard the nightmares of having wisdom teeth removed, it almost seemed barbaric but I can tell you I did not experience any of that with Dr. Chang. He continuously asked me throughout the whole procedure which took about an hour how I was doing. read more

His demeanor was one of empathy, compassion, and professionalism. He was not only polite and full of good manners, but he was also funny. Cheats. I asked for a cleaning, telling them I had some missing teeth that I wanted to take care of later with dentures. They called me in for a consult, took my whole health history. Then a second visit for the cleaning and a consult on the missing teeth. No cleaning - "Oh you have diabetes, we need clearance from your doctor". and the specialist comes in for a few minutes. I had specifically said I have had several consults and know I want dentures, not implants. He gives me a talk on the benefits of implants and I get a bill of over $100 for each visit (after insurance payments). read more

We are leaving this practice after almost two decades (the current owners bought out the previous owner), and we have had a litany of bad experiences, primarily with thier business practices, including some disconnect with PearlFection and our insurer, Delta Dental, that we don't quite understand. Terrible customer service and billing practices. Dealing with the admin/front desk staff is the most frustrating of it all. There is a lack of ownership & willingness to help when you call with a problem. After reading a few yelp reviews I know this is not new. My first problem was with Jenna (who surprisingly still has a job, she should be fired) not sending the paperwork correctly to my insurance company, and I did not get reimbursed in a timely manner. My second issue was when the pandemic hit and businesses closed. The staff continued to charge my credit card when I asked not to be charged and the same employee Jenna assured me I was not going to be - but it happened twice. I wrote a very detailed review that I deleted because they gave me a refund and a supervisor went on to say that my review reflected poorly on the doctors... The supervisor never acknowledged how frustrating this is from a customer's perspective, and how as a customer I no longer trust that something they say they will do will get done. The supervisor never called me as he said he would back then. I continue with my ortho treatment hoping to be done soon so I don't have to deal with this anymore. I should have kept that review up, so people can realize what a nightmare it is to deal with your admin staff. Today I called the Frederick office because a bracket fell off, and well guess what! whoever manages the ortho schedule is not in, so they don't know if an appointment can be made but someone will call me back. Who will call back and when? no solid answer which translates into two more phone calls to get something done at this place. Their scheduling and billing are all over the place. And good luck if you want to speak to a supervisor to bring up these or other issues, no one seems to take ownership for the terrible service provided. read more

I had been a patient of the previous practice which was marvelous. Once Pearlfection Dentistry took over, things went down hill. I have had 3 different dentists since the new practice and they have all left. This should have been my sign. The hygienists are nice, but everything else, I'm going to have to say is not. I had a dental emergency a couple months ago and called to get an appointment and was told I could be seen in 4 weeks. I said it's an emergency and asked to have one of the dentists call me. The girl could not comprehend that I wanted to leave a voicemail for the dentist. I tried to get her to understand I just wanted to leave a message and she said to hold on while she asked the dentist if I could leave a message. She hung up on me. She didn't call back. The dentist didn't call. I will never go back to this practice. I called other practices and was seen the next morning. I went to a dental practice that I had never been to before and was treated better in one morning than I ever was at Pearlfection Dentistry. Scheduled a new appt for my spouse and I here. The staff was very friendly. But I am very disappointed at the amount of time they schedule your appointments for. I had my appointment first and was having no issues with my teeth. I am currently pregnant and for that reason was unable to get xrays. I thought since I had no problems that my appointment would just be a cleaning. Unfortunately they stated they only have 2 dental hygienist working at their practice and didn't have availability till January. I had nothing done and scheduled an appointment for January. I wasn't upset about that, I understood and was more interested in getting my husband in who was having problems with his teeth. He went in and they told him that they could only do xrays on one tooth that was bothering him. They refused to do full xrays of his mouth which is all we wanted to see everything that was wrong. They stated they only booked him for a small time slot and could not do full xrays and only had time to take xrays of one tooth and also did not have time to fill the tooth either. I was extremely upset because usually when you schedule an appointment for the first time at a dentist they take pics of your entire mouth and figure out everything that's wrong and go over your options. Here they apparently don't have enough time for all of that. He left without getting anything done and had to reschedule for another day for a full time slot to get all xrays done.. He was also planning on using the dental insurance that they provide but the amounts that are on the website and what they cover is not what they actually say in person. Beware if you go with their insurance the coverage is not what their website says. I am still debating whether I want to go back to this office or not. I give them two stars instead of one because the staff was friendly and the office was very pretty and clean. read more

Horrible billing practices. They quote you and collect an "estimate" up front based on their in-house prices (which are doubled what my dental carrier would reimburse) but there is never any patient refund or credit mentioned. They also intentionally hold onto claims and do not submit to insurance until 6 - 8 weeks after services have been rendered while scheduling multiple unnecessary visits in between that time frame. This causes patients to reach their out of pocket max after one or two claim submissions - meaning more money pocketed for this practice. When you attempt to get a detailed invoice, they conveniently take their time meanwhile they send you to collections without proper explanation. This scam is ingenious! The dental hygienist there (Susan I think), pressures patients into writing "positive reviews" online...which explains most of the fake reviews here. I personally know of two other patients, myself included, who received multiple texts asking if a Google review could be written on her and/or the practices behalf. I will not be returning and have spread the word to family and friends in the community. There are plenty of honest practices in the area - do not waste your time here. read more

I have encountered only 3 problems with this practice, but that was enough to leave: 1. Stewart ("Stew") Stringer told me he is the OWNER and therefore is in charge. That is untrue. He is not a dentist and is not even listed on the Pearlfection website. In Maryland, by law and State Dental Board Rules, the owner of a dental practice MUST BE A DENTIST. Therefore, his claim is unlawful. If you challenge him on his ownership claim, he will immediately demote himself to "general manager", but again there is NO name nor title for him on their website. 2. I am unable to get my dental records so far although requesting them in writing for 3 weeks. I have had to retain an attorney to help. Initially "Stew" said several times by email that my records would be sent at no charge. (I had only 2 visits there.) Then he said they were sent. Then he said they were sent with encryption, but did not say when, nor how to break the encryption. I hired a computer consultant to search my computer of all messages from Pearl or Stew. He said that dental records where nowhere to be found, encrypted or not! I told Stew this, so he just thought up another excuse for stalling on my records. He told me that State Dental Board Rules REQUIRE him to charge 76 cents per page for records, and he sent me an invoice for copying 59 pages (after only 2 visits) . Two more fibs from Stew: (1) The Dental Board (per my attorney) says only that the MAXIMUM charge for records can be NO MORE THAN 76 cents per page, and that records must be provided within 21 working days of request. (2) When I challenged Stew by phone on the charge of $44.84 to copy 59 pages (which no patient could accumulate in 2 visits) he did some paper scratching and changed my records fee to $14.44 for 19 pages. I don't know how he decided on this number, but he wanted my credit card info immediately to pay this amount. I know Stew well enough now not to trust him with my credit card, so I asked him to email me an invoice so the amount could not be changed again later. He did that 5 days ago, and I sent it same day to my attorney. She volunteered to send him her business check in the proper amount by certified mail, along with her instructions for mailing my records. Hopefully, Stew will quit trying to create more excuses, and just sent my records this week. If not, I am holding open the option to sue Pearl Dentistry for my expenses of having to hire an attorney and a computer expert just to get record copies which by law I am entitled to. 3. If you want to see a dental specialist in this practice, you cannot make this decision on your own, and they will NOT accept a referral from a general dentist not in their practice group. Why? Are their general dentists smarter than their specialists or have better or longer training? No and No are the correct answers. Then why? Because they have found that this plan allows them to charge you at least twice for the same problem. Even if you are a long-term patient there, if you ever want to be seen for a NEW dental problem or complaint, you must first be seen and charged by one of their general dentists! Was told most folks are OK with the added cost because they want things done right and I was accused of wanting the work done at bargain rates. In addition the new patient consult was advertised as free...just got the bill from my insurance company showing what they didn't cover! Discriminatory against the disabled and a terrible level of organization. A place so bad that I created a Yelp account purely to warn others to avoid this place. I have a disability which I told them about when I made the appointment. This disability means I cannot drive. They wait until I get there to tell me they cannot work on me without my doctor's approval, and give me a form. I take the form to the doctor, she approves me for basic dental work. I set up another appointment, arrive again, and they STILL refuse to treat me. At that point, it ceases to be insuranced-based precautions and becomes discrimination against the disabled. They claim to have no medical capacity to make judgements on the condition, but their medical understanding was so vast, they can negate a doctor's approval, despite them actually knowing and testing the patient. read more

I had a pretty horrifying experience at this dentist. I bought their in house insurance that covered 2 cleanings. The first time I was in everything went well, the dentist and hygienist pointed out some spots on my teeth that I had sealants on when I was younger but have since fallen out. They told me to consider getting the sealants replaced when I was there in 6 months. Then, when I went in for the second cleaning the dentist told me that I should have gotten the sealants immediately and that they had turned into cavities. When I asked what changed and reminded them that they advised me not to get them immediately, the dentist accused me of being wrong and said that she would have never said that. I got upset because I felt like I was receiving conflicting information and being accused of doing something wrong when I know that I would have made the appointment to get sealants if I had been told to. When I got upset, she just read me what it said in my chart and told me again I was wrong because the chart said so. The chart, surprisingly, does not actually record what I was advised. I decided to wait on getting the cavities filled until I got a second opinion and I am so glad I did. I went home to a trusted dentist that I have been seeing for many years and upon telling them my story they had several issues. First, only children should get sealants otherwise potentially harmful bacteria can get trapped in the tooth and cause more damage. Second, I did not have any cavities or evidence of decay. I am so glad I trusted my instincts to see another dentist, or I would have had useless holes drilled in my mouth for a hefty price as well as the pain. I am so scared of the fact that these dentists could be doing this to other people. Please be careful here! read more

I am thoroughly disappointed in how they handled the administrative process. After not having been to this dentist in 9mths....I receive an invoice for an OVERDUE BALANCE...demanding prompt payment or collection procedures would begin. When I called the clerk was rude and barely provided any information only if I would like to pay. I feel that they are unprofessional and apply hidden charges. Extremely disappointing experience this morning and a little disturbing. I went in for my 8 AM appointment excited to get enrolled with a new dentist and get my teeth cleaned and the front office was very busy and disorganized. I sensed it from the strart. A new receptionist was training. She asked for my ID and insurance card. Her trainer and she made a copy of my card and had me fill out documents as a new patient would. I then went back up to counter to take back my filled out documents and she asked for my card again. I went on to explain that I had already gave them my information and then they couldn't find where the information went in the system?? I write all this because there was no concern for my personal information let alone for just my presence, this is the worst part: I elected to change my mind about selecting this office due to the front reception area not safeguarding my information and really just not paying attention to what they were doing (I bet there are a lot of mistakes that we as consumers don't even see). I asked for the information that I filled out, told them that I wanted to find another dentist and left. Not 10 minutes later, I get a phone call from the office insisting that I pay 50 dollars for a cancellation. Let me make one thing clear here, I kept my appointment; I was not a no show or a late cancel. I can't help that the front reception area isn't properly trained. I simply made a consumer choice to go somewhere else based on the first impression that I had about this place. The receptionist and her trainer continued to threaten me on the phone about having to pay a 50 dollar fee. Terrible, terrible way to be to a consumer who just wants to select a good, professional dentist. So, They (2 receptionists) were not professional, disorganzed, not concerned with a patient's welfare. They only were concerned about the 50 dollar cancellation fee; enough so to give me a call to collect that fee and tell me how bad I was for being inpatient, etc. They did waive the 50 dollars after making me feel terrible for making a decision that is rightfully mine to make. The office manager did call to get more of my perspective on this but he made excuses by informing me why they were asking for the 50 dollars because it takes money to pay the hygenists, etc, etc, etc. He didn't apologize for how I was treated however. I can't review my hygenist because I didn't even get that far. These businesses have to remember that first impressions are real and actions of people have consequences. On a positive note, I am glad this happened because it appears they have billing problems based on reviews. I believe this happened for a reason and I will find a better practice to go for my dental hygiene needs. read more

In all my years of choosing dentists, this is the best choice I have ever made! After a little accident leaving me with a front broken tooth, this office worked me in quickly. Tammy and Dr. Lopez were incredible! I now have a matching perfectly "designed" front tooth. The next day was my day to see Hamilton and I was able to go and smile to my heart's content. I recently had my first crown done at Pearlfection dentistry. The experience was better than I thought it would be. Dr. Stringer and Susan did a great job.
