Well. I've been going here for my glasses for years and this was probably the sorriest experience I've ever had. A few things, the setting up of the exam and the exam was fine. Everything went according to plan. However, the pick up of my glasses was extremely problematic. I had ordered a pair of regular frames and a pair of sunglasses. I arrived onsite to pick my glasses up on 7/22 after receiving a call. When I arrived, I did ask the associate about my sunglasses. I was advised at this time that my sunglasses weren't ready and they would call me in a week. No real issues with that because of Covid-19. August 1st hits and I haven't received a call. I call on August 2 (no answer), and I called the next few days after and I finally left a voicemail on 8/6. On August 10th, I finally speak with an associate who said that she had listened to my message and a shipment was coming in. She advised that she would check and call me back. I never got that call. Then I finally called on August 17, and the associate who answered said that yes, my sunglasses were in and had been since the July 22nd and they had called me. Now if this was the case, when I was there to pick up my regular frames on 7/22, why didn't the associate give my sunglasses to me? Heck, even if they had left me a voicemail after I picked up my regular frames, why didn't the associate I spoke with on 8/10 tell me that my glasses were in? To her credit, the associate on the phone was apologetic but when I went into the location to pick it up, there was literally no explanation, no apology, just a 'we called you'. So, they weren't gonna call me at all? Yeah, no. On my next go around, I will be going to another provider all together. Do better, PearleVision-Ferndale. read more

Every time you call they put you on hold a minimum of 15 mins. We will be filing a complaint with the BBB and even calling Help me Hank. DO NOT use this location spare yourself. Service was fine. Dr Adams was helpful - very informative about Q's I had... I wasn't happy about was the dilation drops she put in my eyes... Dr. Adams did not explain how long my eyes would be dilated, and I never had these drops in my eyes before (that I can remember). So I expected them to dilate for a few minutes... only it lasted hours and got much worse once I left Pearl Vision; I could barely drive!! I really should NOT have been driving, but i had no way home so I drove EXTRA carefully.. my eyes really were negatively affected by these. I wish I had known prior. I never had these drops before at other vision tests. Definitely strange. Worse yet was that my insurance base price could not cover their lowest priced frame!! I would have to pay just $14 plus taxes for the ugliest glasses they carried, but I decided instead to buy a pair from Zenni Optical online. However, one needs their PD (pupil distance) measurement and prescription for this. I was informed that because I would not be purchasing eye glasses from them, their policy is that I have to pay $25 to be told my pupil distance. Meanwhile, my coworker who told me about Zenni, said she has called three different shops in the past years and they always gave her the PD distance along with her prescription as part of the paid for eye-exam. I'm here at 6:45pm on a Wednesday and this place is definitely closed. :( The doctors are good or whatever but you can definitely find a more convenient eye doctor - even a more convenient PV. There is only metered street parking and with the doctor leaving at 6, it's almost impossible to get an eye exam after work. Today I had to make a return here and the site & the building said the store was open until 7pm so I rushed over from the eastern suburbs, drove around for parking, parked and walked 2 blocks to get there at 6:45pm to find it closed. If you close before 7pm on Wednesdays that's fine, but respect your customers enough to post the correct hours please. read more

I ended up here because they take my insurance and they're nearby, and I'm so glad I did! This was the best experience I've had at an eye doctor, or any doctor in recent memory. EVERYONE working there was kind, knowledgable and professional. The doctor addressed all my concerns patiently and it was obvious from her communication that she loves what she does. The two woman that were staffing the sales floor were so genuine and present with the costumers. they also had all of my insurance information (e.g. they knew which services would cost me what, based on my insurance provider and plan), and made what is usually a perfunctory chore, a lovely experience. I was really disappointed after my last experience, because I truly loved going there for Dr. Adams. However, after this last experience I really dont recommend anyone going there because I have had SO many issues which are still going on. I purchased a pair of sunglasses & contact lenses. After my contact trial period when attempting to order my new contacts before the EOY, I was repeatedly told my insurance didn't cover two pairs (of either glasses or contacts), however, I knew this was false. Mind you, this was after I had called three times but they couldn't look up my information because their new system was down. Okay.... So after getting so frustrated I called VSP and they called the shop directly. I also had questions surrounding my bill as when I logged into my VSP account only a portion of what I paid for was recorded. There were SO many discrepancies. They ended up billing me directly for my contact lens screening, although that was covered by my insurance. They charged me an additional amount for anti reflection on my sunglasses which I DIDNT EVEN HAVE. They admitted wrong doing and was given a refund on that. They also flat out lied and charged me an additional amount for a warranty on my sunglasses I never approved NOR did they ask me about. Even though the Manager says her staff always ensures this is communicated to customers (it wasn't to me). The VSP Agent also confirmed that I had the second option available to me. Due to the ongoing frustration, as I mentioned she called them directly because I just couldn't deal with it anymore. Overall, serious concerns surrounding the competency of the staff and you will more than likely get charged for random things &/or incorrect charges. Best part is that throughout all of this they kept telling me that dont worry your contacts will be there for the holidays it only takes two days. Received my left pair of contacts a week ago and still waiting for my right pair. I dread calling them for an update, but seems like I will have to. PS. Avoid this location at all costs. Firstly, they have very unethical business practices. As many other reviewers posted, they add a $40 retinal scan (which insurance companies do not cover) without your explicit approval. You only realize this when you receive a very inflated bill at the end. Secondly, their contact lenses prices are extremely high. I opted out and purchased my lenses at Sam's Club. My insurance company would not reimburse my lense purchase at first because they said that Pearle Vision had a lens claim on my account!! They illegally put a hold on my insurance for the lens purchase which I did not authorize. I will be placing a formal complaint with my vision insurance company and the BBB. I rarely stoop to a one star review, but this Pearl Vision location was a TOTAL disaster. I came in on the last day of the year to use up some flex money. The glasses were ordered and paid for and they told me two weeks. Three weeks later and no word. I understand that it's a busy time of year, so I figured they were a little backed up, not a big deal. Upon calling the store the staff had no recollection of my order despite an order number on my receipt. They even asked me multiple times if I "was sure I came to the Ferndale location" like I was confused about my whereabouts. They said they'd look into it and call me back shortly. After six hours I had not heard back so I called again. The associate said there was a mix up on the order, but they reordered a "rush delivery". Two weeks passed and no word again, so the rush delivery was a total lie. I called and they said that the glasses were shipped and expected to be in the next couple days. They came in the next day and I was looking forward to getting my glasses and never having to deal with this place again. Upon arrival they ordered the wrong glasses!! I was so frustrated, found the pair they should have ordered and thankfully they switched out the lenses on the spot. When I said they were the wrong glasses the staff looked dumbstruck and literally said nothing, just looked at me and each other. No one said sorry, the manger did not talk to me and no one offered any sort of discount for the additional month I had to wait. It was ridiculous the complete lack of caring that the several employees I interacted with had. I've visited several other Pearl Vision locations and had good experiences. Not recommended. Rushed through everything it seemed. They are not good at adjusting the glasses! My glasses finally came out right, but it was a long process that required utmost patience from ME. THE STAFF - the ever evolving faces make me wonder if their staff is hired in as temps and not trained. Not all employees were bad, but most were. Go elsewhere and make sure someone spends time with you before you shell out your hard earned money. I would have given two stars if I didn't arrive at home with crooked frames. This is my third negative experience in downtown Ferndale businesses - I can see why store fronts are empty and closed. My suggestion: Find a place, go for a couple visits to try on frames see how they treat you and watch OTHER people's interactions when they get their glasses. I order my glasses and am told 7-10 days. 10 days pass I call and am told 10 business days, I finally get my glasses and they ordered the wrong lenses. They order a second pair REFUSE to expedite the process I wait another 2 weeks and again they order the wrong lenses. This place is an absolute joke, one mistake is fine making me wait twice because you cant order the right lenses is insane. They offer a $50 gift card for the inconvenience like I am ever making a mistake buying from this place again. Less than 1 star. I do believe Satan owns this place. I called the night before for an emergency consultation as I had a burning eye problem and noticed a white spot on my iris. Scary right? So I go in as soon as they open, explain to the lady why I'm there and sit....and sit...and sit. An HOUR after the business opens the Dr walks in. 10 minutes later takes the first patient. In that hour a walk in woman walked in and sat down. Thats foreshadowing. I sit and wait for a long time, explain to every employee why I'm there. I'm nervous, very nervous. They dont seem to share my emotion. Everyone tells me how I should buy new contacts, new glasses, that thats probably the problem since I've had my 6month contacts for 7 months. Sure, I'll buy some lets just get this EMERGENCY EYE problem looked at first. Another 30 minutes go by, out comes the Dr with his 1st patient. Takes the walk in. WHAT THE HECK?! This infuriates me. I walk to the counter and explain. "The Dr. running late." Yeah no crap i saw him walk in an hour late. All in all I waited around 2 1/2 to get my emergency eye problem looked at. I scheduled a future contact appointment. Went back 2 weeks later for it. Waitied 2 hours. Rescheduled. Came back 2 days later. Waited another 2 hours. Left. Never went back. This place is the worst. The optometrist, Dr Adams, is the only redeeming quality about this location. The front end staff was nice, but the ladies who sell the glasses up front, are possibly the worst I've dealt with. First and foremost, this is a franchise location, so dealing with Pearle Vision customer service after the fact will not help you in the least when dealing with this location. Please bear that in mind when dealing with everyone. This location will not, unless pressed, explain absolutely anything. They let me know that I had special order, and one of the ladies started joking about it. Which lead me to believe it was not a big deal. Come to find out, after thinking about the purchase and realizing how expensive the purchase would be, you cannot change your mind after they hit the button (the joking took away much of what that meant when they did it). Not only that, their system froze while I was trying to get things processed to finish, and the sales woman had no idea what to do about it. So what should have been quick, took longer than the actual optometrist appointment. Perfect climate to say, yes to anything. Love them sales tactics. In the future, Zenni is the way to go. This was an awful experience all the way around, and I would firmly recommend, if you do go to a Pearle Vision, make sure that you go to a non-franchised location. read more

Pearle Vision is one of those places Ferndalers walk past all the time, but I hardly ever see anyone in despite it having some of the most lucrative real estate in the near suburbs at Woodward and Nine Mile. My beau, my roommate and I all wear debonaire disguises to enhance our fierce intellects, or at least pass ourselves off as erudite when we're feeling less than sophisticated. A pair of slim-framed glasses, mod rims or (for me) coloured contacts are all in my astounding arsenal of awesome. I rely on Zenni Optical for stylish frames and Costco for contacts. The housemates needed eye appointments last week and ventured off to Pearle Vision to meet their (glasses) maker. I tagged along for the beau's visit, though. First plus: Pearle Vision is rainbow friendly (as a sticker on the front door notes) and supportive of local causes and events. I dig a corporate store giving props to the local side of things. The optometrist side I cannot comment on through lack of direct experience of being strapped down into a chair and subjected to eye-drying puffs of air and coke-bottle lenses while rattling off random numbers. As for the selection of glasses and contacts, the displays do feel rather sparse for the size of the shop. How many pairs of frames does one shop or person need? That enigma I won't answer here, a secret to be savoured like the licks for a Tootsie Pop or how caramel gets into the Caramilk bar. But hey, Zenni spoils me for choice. At least the layout is nice and spacious, and you can meander through a pretty broad variety of styles. Thick frames, thin frames, wireless frames; progressive or plain; name it and they probably have something that fits the bill. Popular brands are carried, but with them comes quite the pretty price tag. Yeoch. I have been spoiled badly with some of the prices I pay, so sticker shock had me staring at the bill for the beau's pretty peeper enhancers,. The roommate only waited three or four days for his glasses, not a bad thing. My beau's took nearly a week and a half for very similar frames, a less severe prescription, and only anti-glare coating. Hmph, luck of the draw maybe. Pearle Vision was less than great about communicating the timeline and notifying us when the glasses were in, and when someone called on a Saturday night to tell us they were there, they neglected to note they were calling after hours. Telling us we could pick them right up, we drove down excitedly at 6:30... only to realize that no one was in the store, and they shut 90 minutes prior. Quoi? All the same, he looks good and got plenty of compliments for how nice he is. But me, I'll trust in my good ol' online source and Costco for contacts unless they have a special. My daughter had an eye appointment at the Ferndale Pearle Vision on Saturday, October 26, 2019. After paying what I thought was a very large amount ($357.93 out of pocket) for an eye exam, frames, lens, and other services, we were told the glasses would be in in about 7-10 business days and that they would call us when they were in. After nearly two weeks and nothing from then, my wife called them on Friday, November 8th to see where the glasses were and was told they would be ready no later than Wednesday, November 13. That day came and went without a call from Pearle Vision, so on Saturday, November 16 I called them to see where the glasses were. They put me on hold for a good 15 minutes (this was pretty much standard procedure; every time I or my wife would call them we were always put on hold for at least 15 minutes) before I hung up. We called back, and their excuse was that they were still looking for the glasses and would call us back. Amazingly, the asst manager Shatay actually did call us back after about 30 minutes, but of course with bad news; the glasses "broke" and were being shipped again but expedited, and they will arrive no later than Friday, Nov 22, if not sooner, according to her, and they will call once in. Nov 22 comes and late in the afternoon still no word from them, so I called them to see where the glasses were. After being put on hold again for 15 minutes, the manager Tracy informed me that they didn't come but they still could show up Saturday, Nov 23. Finally, my wife called them today, Nov 23, and after being put on hold again for nearly 20 minutes, the representative comes back to say no glasses. We asked for the manager, but the associate says shes the only one there, which I find hard to believe. I asked for the district manager's name, but somehow the associate has no idea that person's name or number. It's been 4 weeks and still no glasses. I'm sick of the lies, the excuses and the horrible customer service. My daughter can't see in school, she needs the glasses already! I should have checked the Yelp reviews before going to this place, most of them have the same complaints as me. I don't know how this place stays in business. I've filed complaints with the BBB and FTC already, and I'm even thinking about contacting some of the local TV stations. Be prepared to ask them to tell you the cost of each procedure before you agree to it. Also, you should ask them to print an invoice and scrutinize every item before you pay. They "aren't set up for refunds," I was told, after I noticed a $40 retinal scan (which I did not need, having just had one at my ophthalmologist) and a $36 protection plan (which I was told came with my lenses). Since I didn't notice the charges before they ran my card, they wouldn't refund me. Normally, I only Yelp when I'm happy, but I did talk (politely) to the employees, and the most they'd do was pass me some extra saline solution. My glasses fit nicely, (though my contacts had to be reordered as the prescription was off). My initial visit was pleasant, the staff is friendly. But whatever you do, don't make a mistake, or let them make one, because they're "not set up" to fix it. Oh! And there was another woman with similar complaints while I waited. They need to do a better job of letting their customers anticipate costs. Otherwise, it seems like they are counting on you just not figuring it out. read more

I needed my eyes checked, and lucky me, I just bought an AAA membership. Woo-hoo! I get 30% off my eye exam at Pearlevision because of my membership. I made an appointment for a Monday morning. The place was empty when I arrived. I was quickly greeted, given paperwork to fill out and was quickly seen by the doctor for my contact eye exam. I've been wearing contacts for over 15 years now, so I knew what to expect. I sat through the dreaded puff of air and the on-the-verge-of-annoying better 1, better 2 thing to find out that my prescription is still the same (again woo-hoo!). But I'm not rating my eyes, I'm rating the place. First, the doc: Dr. Lavine was super nice, very thorough but a bit too "let-me-explain-to-you-what-I'm-doing." I personally can't stand the doctors that have to calmly talk me through the stupidest things, like how to clean my contacts and when to replace them. He was also kind of pushy with trying to get me to do the upgraded computerized retina scan which tacks on $30 to my exam fee. Thanks dude, but I'll pass. Next was the ordering the contacts part. The sales guy told me he would meet Costco's price...right on! But he was very pushy with getting me to commit to buying them right there and then. I paid for my exam and said I'll be back next week to buy contacts. The next week I return and I am helped by his associate. I mentioned the Costco price match and she got pissy but claimed to be pissed at him. She wasn't the nicest person but was all puppy-dogs-and-butterflies after I mentioned that we had an acquaintance in common. I quickly paid for my contacts and bounced. I was done with chit-chat and I was done with Pearlevision. The price was right, the doc was OK, but the service wasn't stellar. So two stars, because it was mediocre but I've had better service at other places, including Sam's Club. Honestly, I should have stuck with Direct Optical (my usual place) but I got blindsided the by deal...oh well, now I know better! read more

I have always enjoyed my yearly trip to Pearle in Ferndale. Everyone in the store is very helpful and friendly, though there is one employee who is a bit too willing and able to help. She gave her opinion on every frame I picked up - Despite me never having asked for her help! These were not opinions that I wanted or took seriously, and she was quite annoying to be honest. She has been in the store during my visits the past two years and I dreaded walking the floor with new glasses to try on both times when I saw that she was working. The experience with Dr. Adams was pleasant. However, I ordered my glasses from this location, and they did not call me when my glasses came in. I called into the office to inquire about my glasses. Beth told me that my glasses were in the office, but asked me not to come into the office (even though they were open) because it would be inconvenient for her. Due to my work schedule, I was able to go to the office the following weekend to pick-up my glasses. They were adjusted on the left side, but not on the right. For the next two weeks, I would periodically call into the office to see if the person who adjusted my glasses was able to adjust the other side. Today, I returned to the office to have the other side of my glasses adjusted. The tech that initially adjusted my glasses asked Beth to adjust them. I explained that I only needed the right side of my glasses adjusted and she begins heating and re-adjusting the LEFT side, which was fine and not the reason for my visit today. After 3-5 minutes of Beth ignoring my request and continuing to misshape the frame of my glasses, I walked over to the tech that initially adjusted them and asked if she would correct them. She said that she had a meeting to attend, but came behind the front desk and adjusted the right side of my glasses frame. At this very moment, my frames are still not symmetrical on both sides and I'm debating trying to find an alternative Pearle Vision location to have this corrected because most eye doctors will not adjust a frame that they did not order. While the frame is no longer too tight on the right side, it is also clearly not symmetrical. Needless to say, I'm extremely upset with not being notified about my glasses, being asked not to come into the office during normal business hours, and the fact that my frames are still not symmetrical. read more

This place is the worst. I had been stuck going here for a couple of years because I live in downtown Detroit and this was the closest location. The first time I went, I ended up with a $350 bill even with insurance. They up-sold me on everything without talking about cost until they rang me up. Shame on me. After using my new glasses for a couple of days and noticing that the lens weren't quite right. I went back again only to find out that the glasses recommend to me are not the right fit or lens measurement but, were the most expensive. They said they will have to send the glasses back in for repair, leaving me without glasses, only to rely on my contacts. A year later, I call for an appointment regarding the contacts they sold me were irritating my eyes. Came in and again instead of trying to help me, they wanted to sell me something I didn't need. They became confused when I told them I just wanted help with my vision health. As for a customer of Pearl Visions and other vision care office that has had annual visits since the second grade. They were rude and mean to my mom. If you have a mother you love then don't support a business that would be mean to mine. Which is mind boggling to me because everyone loves my mom, she doesn't even do anything and strangers tell me how much they love her, except at this Pearle Vision where apparently cash comes first and clients can take a jumping leap. My brother bought a groupon for her because she's been without glasses for too long, a several hundred dollar Groupon, but apparently you can't use a Groupon you've already paid for here and your insurance, so if you have insurance you've just flushed all of your money down the toilet (Groupon will be hearing from me next). My mom was told it would be cheaper for her just to use her eye insurance because they will cover half...and the cheapest possible option was over $1000...to get a pair of glasses. Then she asked for a breakdown of the charges so she could talk it over with my dad before spending that much money, they said "no, our paperwork is only for our employees." THEN she asked if she could just get a pair of frames without the lenses so she didn't waste the money her children had paid for the Groupon, the several hundred dollars, AND you guessed it- they said no. I'm so mad right now. Do not support a shady business that steals money and up charges its clients. read more

This is one of the best experiences I have ever had at the optometrist! I walked right in and was seen at my appointment time without a wait! The staff were warm and helpful and spent a great deal of time with me choosing frames and making sure my insurance information was correct so I didn't overpay! I went to this location for an eye exam and the doctor and staff were very professional and treated me like they value me as a client. They were helpful in answering all of my questions regarding the procedure, options for purchasing eyewear including suggestions what would fit my facial frame, etc. I live far from Pearle Vision Ferndale but for me, it's worth the trip to get grade A customer service. read more

Went there today with my kids and I have to say, this location is great. Timing could be a little better, waited over 30 min to be seen. BUT when I was with the eye doctor, I felt that he took his time and explained what he was doing. Made sure my son was getting the correct Rx. The woman who helped me was wonderful and patient with my two kids who desperately wanted to go play outside in the warm weather instead of waiting for their mother. I found exactly what he needed and was happy I came to a different location. The last one I went to was horrible. The people were unfriendly and I had to explain to them how to do their job, calling the insurance before hand and re-calling them in the store to say "yes, I did get it okay'd before my appointment." Overall, if you are strapped for time, you might want to find another place but I was ok with it because the people made up for it with the quality of their service.
