I was hoping this would be a go-to place for me in the future since they rent out ebikes as well as maintain them but I learned the hard way, no one in the store knows much. I called in advanced to see if they could work on my ebike and I was told, at length, that yes, maintenance could be done like adjust derailleur, adjust breaks, etc but if parts needed to be ordered, they couldn't do it. I was ok with that. I wish I had asked for the person's name that I talked to. Because, when I loaded up the bike (which is not an easy task) and took it all the way to the store, the guy I talked to said, NO - they only fix flats. Obviously, one hand doesn't talk to the other. Next week I have family coming in and I wanted to rent ebikes from them but I didn't even get to that conversation. And while I was in there, someone didn't seem happy with their rental either. I suggest avoiding this place. They seem too incompetent. read more

I rented a full suspension mountain bike for the day. It was well built and reasonably priced ($100). I took it to an intermediate bike trail in a state park and it handled the rocks and branches gracefully. The staff were engaging and friendly. Will rent from here again!! read more

Nice enough dudes, but i stopped in to get a quick mid ride fill on sealant for my rear tire and they ended up blowing it off the rim. To their credit, they gave me half off cost of a new tire to replace the old but it didn't match and i literally only had to buy because of their mistake. Also i was still asked to pay for labor and sealant after sitting around the shop for an hour.. i know mistakes happen, but tough to swallow when a shop thinks "hey sorry" is proper gesture after such an event. I'm working on a project bike and figured Peak Cycles was a good place to get parts, especially since they are the B&M arm of BikeParts.com. When I came in today I had to interrupt the guy eating a sandwich at the front to try and get someone to help me find what I was looking for, as it was my first time in the shop. I was told that they do not carry chainrings "because, you know, we're BikeParts.com and stuff so they're all online" but if I wanted to go home and look at the parts I wanted I could order them and then drive the 20+ minutes back there and pick them up in a few days. So I asked if they carried a tool for removing singlespeed freewheels (like the Park Tool FR-6 and FR-8) and he pointed to where the other cassette removal tools for SRAM and Shimano cassettes were and just walked away, telling me that if I needed any other parts to talk to the guys in service. After a few extremely frustrated laps around the display with no help whatsoever, I ended up just throwing up my hands and leaving empty handed... I didn't even get to ask about any of the other parts I was after. I get it, I'm a hungry active dude myself, but if eating a sandwich is more of a priority than helping customers I'm going to go someplace else where I'm treated like a customer and not just some jerk that's keeping you from your hoagie. read more

Quite possibly the best online customer service I have ever experienced. We submitted an order from Peak's website, BikeParts.com, and when there was a question on an item, I received a clear communication from the customer service team. I'm guessing their emails are answered directly, rather than using an automated system, because you really feel like you're talking to someone who understands what you need. When they were out of stock of one item, instead of getting a generic "Sorry, we're out of Stock", I got an email asking if they could give me a partial fulfillment or did I want to wait for the full number of items. When I needed to do a return, I received an RMA within hours, and instructions on the shipping and the credit process. In this day and age, where you never feel like anyone is really hearing you, I give these guys 5 stars and an unconditional recommendation. read more

I bring my commute bike there twice a year for a "big" tune-up and have always been happy with the results. Maybe they are not quite as technically competent as Excel in Boulder. But they also don't have the attitude. The people working there do not believe they are better (more hardcore, cooler) than their customers. Instead they give consistent, friendly service. They even recommend cheaper parts than what I'm asking for! They have a fair selection of parts. If they do not have what you need in store, they are happy to help you choose in their web-warehouse, and you can pick it up the next day. The new space in the Foss building is gorgeous. They added a bike-fitting machine and have a lot of bikes on display. Very nice to be in. Very reasonable prices. read more

We are pass-er-buyers through Golden the last few months. I have stopped into Peak cycles a few times to browse and look at the "strider" style balance bikes for kids.On Tuesday night we went in to finally buy the long sought after balance bike for the toddler and the staff was GREAT. Very helpful and attentive in a non-annoying way. We were in the store for well over an hour making sure the we were picking to right bike (there were three to pick from) and we were never made to feel like we should just buy and get out. Again, the staff was great (didn't catch names) and we finally settled on a specialized brand hot pink balance bike. We got a few other odds and ends and were agreed that it would be over $200.00 for everything, sigh.....The bill was only $150.00 and we realized that the great staff gave us a great discount! Thanks so much Peak Cycles! P.S: They have great road, mountain and hybrid bikes for sale or to build but they are pricey. The shock on my older Specialized mountain bike finally wore out and could not be rebuilt. I bought a unique yoke from Peak to adapt a new modern shock to the bike. A couple of weeks later, when I started to put in new bushings to the new shock, I realized I was in over my head. I drove to Peak, and Daryus, the mechanic on duty, took over the project immediately and fixed me up in about 15 minutes. I know they are slammed in the repair shop, but he dropped everything and helped me out. First class service for sure! read more

I have known and done business at Peak Cycles since John first started in Golden. He was on S Golden Road with a small place primarily doing mail order. When he moved into town, he was on Wash Ave and 14th... and expanded his operations. He has always focused upon the customer and quality products and services. In the move into the Foss Building, he expanded the retail operation and maintained or improved all operations of his business. If you go back in time (2000-2005), Golden had one downtown bike shop. It was "Self Propulsion" owned and operated by Portia Masterson. She had owned and operated it for 25 years. When she retired and closed it, she told be that she thought that John (in his early days) was the new shop in town which from what she could tell, was the best for serving Golden's bike community. I totally concur... and agree that Peak provides the best bike shop in the Golden area. Staff is super friendly, prices are fair, staff is well trained, variety is great. Longtime residents who know the Golden cycling scene are generally to be found at Peak Cycles for their cycling needs. read more

A great locally owned independent bike shop. Biking industry is a tough business. This shop caters to a broad range of customers, but this is not a shop to score cheap parts or discounts. Performance Bikes, BikeSource, and internet shops are okay for single purchases of cheap parts, but you get zero advice, or worse yet, bad advice. Peak Cycles PROVIDES "expert" service and advice. If you are thinking of a road or mountain bike in the medium to premium range, this is your shop. They are fabulous for Specialized and Giant. Their employees have expert knowledge of road and mountain bikes, but are not condescending "race weenies." The shop supports local charities and small bike teams. George Mullen is one of the most accomplished bike fitters in the United States. Before spending more than $500 on a bike, spend just a little, $100-$200 on a professional bike fit, and your pleasure in riding your current or new bike will increase dramatically. The best investment you can make if you ride at least 10 times a year is a professional bike fitting. read more

Mistakes happen, and I'm not one to hold mistakes against a place if they are rare, and if they go out of there way to fix the problem once it's discovered. Such was my first experience at Peak. I had a special order that didn't arrive the day they said because somehow the paperwork was misplaced and the order never went in. Oops! That said, however, they got the part rushed in the next day and put it on my bike free of charge. I was in the shop for over an hour on two different occasions, and they treated everyone with the same level of care. If you're looking for Specialized, or Giant, or just great service and knowledgeable mechanics, you couldn't do much better. Now I have two bike shops that I wouldn't hesitate to go to in Golden. read more

Overpriced and poor work. This place quoted me a price range to build a bike from parts. They came in over the price range, and no extra work popped up to justify it. That felt like a bait and switch just to get the work. Another shop guaranteed a price higher than the quote from this place. This place came in over their quote and more expensive than the other place. Disappointed and probably cheated. Worse than that, they forgot to bleed my brakes. When I went on my first ride I had no brakes and had to drive back to town. Did they fix it right away? No. They required me to go back into the rotation and wait a week to fix their screw-up. No apologies. No urgent attention. Another week without my bike because of their ineptitude. A few months later, my rear shock blew out. The cause of the failure was improper mounting of the shock. It was not even close to being done right. It was obviously wrong to anyone with common sense. That cost me $100 for a rebuild. This shop is terrible. I wouldn't buy anything from them. I most certainly would not let them do any more work on my bike...even if it was free. Going here was a huge mistake. read more

I ordered a rear wheel from their website bikeparts.com. A few hours later I got a call that wheel was out of stock. The guy offered me an upgraded mavic wheel. My first thought was more money, how convenient for them. When I asked him how much it extra it would be he told me he would sell the wheel to me for the exact same price and he even matched the color to the other wheel on my bike. This bike shop is the closest bike shop to the Colorado School of Mines excepting the on campus ORC. They feature excellent mechanics and what seemed to me to be a large range of bike products. I went in to buy a bike lock and this was the only place in Golden that had a combination ulock complete with a chord to lock your wheels. I would have bought it here if the exact model hadn't been a little less expensive on Amazon. If you need expertise, this is a good place to go! read more
