I have been looking for a bicycle for a while now; I've looked online, at used bikes, and visited various stores but none ever seemed to jump out. I live just a few minutes from Derby and decided to stop in on a Saturday about an hour before closing time. The interior was much bigger than I expected, and the floor is packed with bikes, gear, clothing, and other types of equipment. I was greeted right when I walked in and explained that it's been a while since I've owned a bicycle, so there has been a lot of advancement that I've not really kept up on. I don't know much about the details of biking other than the basics, but Bill (at least that was the name on my receipt lol) was super nice and explained everything to me in a way that was easy to understand. After a little back and forth, I ended up purchasing a Specialized bike in a really pretty sage green color. Bill explained the warranties, their commitment to servicing their bicycles, and even let me know that they're always happy to help or answer questions that come up after you begin getting more acquainted with the bike. While bicycles have become a lot more expensive since the last time I owned one, I'm very happy with my purchase! I took it out that evening and it was a ton of fun. The seat is a bit uncomfortable, as many probably are, but I'm so happy to finally have a good bike that fits me. Felt rushed tried to look around for more bike parts after my buddy got a bike tube almost like he was suspicious of us

They knew I was desperate to get a few parts for a bike race where I had to leave the next day, so they took advantage of it. One of the parts was a pair of "Tubeless Valve Stem", and they charged me $34.99 plus tax, which I found out after the fact that other bike shops and online they go for $9.99 to $14.99 - The receipt says Miscellaneous charges on two of the three items I bought and one of them was clearly a boxed item with a bar code. This is the third time I go there in the last few years and always had that same feeling where they just want to take advantage of people, which is an experience I never had in over a dozen bike shops I've been into over the years in Colorado. read more

I don't know why they have people working there if they just wanna sell the equipment and get you out of the door. Trying to get any service they will not replace anything unless it's from their shop. They are very rude and dismissive. First time I went in to buy some gear guy has an attitude, like a mean old mechanic type of attitude. Bought my gear and left, gear worked alright. Second time I went in kinda the same attitude. Part of working with customers is putting on a brave face, smiling and making the customer feel confident about their purchase by giving them additional information. read more

We actually pondered outside for 20 minutes as to if we were going to purchase a speciality bike they have, however we left due to the guys shitty attitude towards us. I was looking to get maybe a bracket for the light on my bicycle. I was also looking to buy a water bottle holder and maybe a rear view for my bike. I walk into this hoarder's version on a bike shop. The place there is over jammed with bicycles. I noticed some bicycle lights on a rack. The problem was I could not get over there to look at them. There was maybe a 12" to 18" space to squeeze in there. Some employee came over and said "What can I get for you". I said that I just wanted to look and see what he had. Then the guy proceeds to squeeze into space saying "I'm skinny, I can get in there". Well I'm standing 7' to 8' back behind a bunch of bike and now this guy is in front of everything. To make a long story short, I tried to get into the space to actually see what the had. The employee told me "You can't go back there.". Don't go to this place. read more

Went in to look at Gravels and compare theirs with those in a Broomfield shop. Overwhelmingly better experience from the standpoint of knowledge about these bikes from Abe. His interest in helping me find the right Bike was exceptional. I've had it for a week and am very happy with his recommendation. My experience in working with this independent shop was great. We came in to have our bike fixed and it seemed like we were an inconvenience. Granted, it's not an expensive mountain bike or fancy street racer, but it was a bike none the less. They didn't try and help us find a solution or offer other options. Just said we would have to order a new wheel ($120) that wouldn't match to put on a bike that cost maybe $50. We took it to More Better Bikes and they fixed it for $20. Now we know. read more

If you need something they likely have it. However you will pay through the nose and feel very bad that you shopped there. I went in to have them look at a rear wheel. They said it was needed replaced versus repaired. They sold me a mtb wheel for $260 which I later found on 3 websites for $89. Got taken advantage of because I needed the wheel today. I went in their shop to get a spoke replaced and get the rim trued and when I picked up the rim it had a chrome spoke, all the spokes on that rim are black so when I pointed that out to them they told me take a sharpie and color it in, do not go to that shop they are a joke and they're all low intelligent people and f*** you read more

Seems like these reviews are a battle of 1 star vs 5 star. All the one star reviews seems over dramatic and not the experience I had. I called. Talked to the owner. Yes he was straight forward no frills BUT HELPFUL and knowledgeable and most of all got my bike set up to be repaired. That's why I reached out and the shop provided. That's a win y'all. All the staff members were weird, the type that treats you like you're annoying them from the sec you walk in. I payed almost $200 for a "tune up"...that they didn't even bother to show me what it was. "Pay here, your bike will be outside"... I had to ask one of the guys to show me what they did before I pay, the dude barely explained me what it was, again, like I was annoying him so much. Look - can you buy a bike here? Yes. Can you get your bike serviced here? Yes. However, my experience was not great. I'm a plus size woman but ride around 120 miles a week. I was hoping to buy a hybrid Specialized bike from Derby but the salesman was so rude that I took my business to Wheatridge Cyclery where they were professional and really cared about getting me on a quality bike. I had a close friend who had the same experience at Derby and ended up buying her bike directly from Specialized. read more

Just bought a Velotric Discover bicycle from Derby Bicycle Center in Thornton. It was a great experience. I am very novice. Abe was very friendly, helpful, and patient. He even showed us how to easily load it on our very tall truck. I really like that the business is family owned for a long time and Abe, manager, has worked there 20 years. I found the owner and manager very friendly. And I especially like that I get maintenance free on my bike for a year! I highly recommend this shop! read more

Had them build a set of wheels for me. They never asked if I wanted them 2 or 3 cross, what Spoke color, what nipple lengths, or told me a price for the wheels or the headset. So I get my wheels with the wrong spoke color and a wheelset I'm flat out unhappy with the build and the complete lack of asking questions. I went back in and talked to them. There only solution was for me to Pay another $70 to rebuild the wheel they messed up. Don't support these guys. read more

The *only* reason I knock this place down a star is because I'm autistic and Derby is overwhelming. So many bikes, parts, and people! You have to side-slip past each other, no matter where you are in the shop. I couldn't get out of there fast enough. They could easily use a new location that's 3x the size of their current location and still feel full. That aside, it's clearly a traditional bike shop in every sense of the word. You're not going to find big box bikes here. That translates into - your are not going to find big box prices either. If you want a Walmart bike that looks the part, and behaves like a casual bike for getting around the neighborhood, and perhaps hit a few groomed paths, go to Walmart. There is nothing wrong with playing to your needs. As long as you're happy. I would recommend a big box bike roughly 60% of the time when being realistic. You're not settling or compromising. You are doing something you enjoy. If you feel like you need to step up later, you will have a better idea of what you need/what. At Derby, you'll find bikes that can handle some more intense riding. If you're going for longer rides, a hybrid road/trail bike may be just what you need. The higher air pressure in the narrower tires can add miles to your ride. Derby has these. They can get a bit pricey, but any purpose built bike can. For mountain bikes, they have everything. But I'm talking mid to high range. Both in quality & price. Again, if you don't plan on beating your bike up much, you may be better of going to REI. If you want to bomb down the side of a mountain and live, it's best to get a bike that will not tear it's gears apart or toss a bag full of break failure in your lap as you approach a trail merge. One thing you have to expect is that these bikes are not cash and carry. You will spend money on maintaining them! Being able to crash through a rock garden can bend rims, break hangers, etc. The more complex the machine, the more parts you have to pay attention too. Mid to high bikes are lightweight, nimble, aggressive, and often instill a bit of over confidence. They are also easy to customize for the season or anticipated conditions. Knowing that you can hit the bike park or a downhill with a bike that can handle it is awesome. You don't want a bike that adds to the challenge. You want a bike that rises to the occasion and adds to the fun. These are the kinds of bikes you'll find at Derby. I can't say much for road bikes. I love my Cannondale and tolerate my Trek. Both are older models. Suffice it to say, I understand road bikes, they are just not my thing. I'm sure Derby has them covered. Electric bikes... they are there. I still see them as a novelty that the laws have not caught up to. As far as parts go, they are pretty well stocked for almost any occasion. I can find everything for my Jammis. But my odd ball Iron Horse sends me to Amazon. Overall, my experience has been pretty good. When you walk in, it feels like a salesperson is assigned to you. Whether to help you out or to make sure you're not stealing stuff, I don't know. It adds to the claustrophobia. I've never purchased a complete bike from them. But I have purchased a fair number of parts. The service shop is knowledgeable. They have never blown me off even when I tell them that I'm trying to find parts for my odd ball. They accommodate me when possible & give me alternate suggestions when my needs can't be met. The sales staff has been solid when browsing. They have contradicted each other just enough to let me know they have opinions. This is a good thing as it reflects experience. Nothing serious. Big Box employees tend to learn from each other where bike shop employees learn by doing. Don't expect canned responses. Every bike shop employee should have an answer to "what is your shittiest bike". If they say all of their bikes are awesome, find a different sales person! Ok, that's enough. I had/have a lot to say when it comes to bike shops as I managed a bike & ski (snowboards, skateboards, rollerblades, etc...) shop for several years back in Idaho. 70% of my adult life has been spent in retail. All in small business. I'd like to say that I know what to look for. But this is just 1 review. The more you plan on spending, the more reviews you should read. Happy Trails! read more

I typically don't write reviews but this is the second time I've been treated poorly at this location. With everything going on right now, I make every attempt to support local businesses (sometimes unsuccessfully, damn you Amazon). But this place makes that really hard to do. First, the older man that is usually working the front and greeting customers, really isn't cut out for this job. Very impersonal and i just get the feeling that he wants me to get out ASAP. And i understand with the current pandemic you don't want people just touching all kinds of shit in your store, but I've been here before all this and i got the same treatment. And he isn't very knowledgeable about bike parts. When i needed new pads and showed him pictures and the brand. And the part number. Still nothing. I had to wait in the back for one of the technicians to take a look. Secondly, this place is a bloody rip off. I had to replace some metal brake levers for my son's bike and it was $45 for the pair, seriously?! And it wasn't even a name brand, i looked up the exact part after i got home and they were $10 on Amazon! At the same time i bought a new bike multi tool and it was $30, again not a name brand. I could get a Crankbrothers multi-tool for that price. This was the main point of aggravation for me and a large part of why i'm writing this review. I've known 2 people that owned bike stores. They both put a lot on the line to open and maintain their business. They were both very friendly and very professional and very knowledgeable. They only sold great products and maybe wasn't the cheapest on the block but they stood by everything they sold. Both are no longer open and it's such a bummer (and even more so) when a place like this still exists. I can no longer shop here, which sucks cause i buy a lot of bike parts and only see myself buying more. Two bikes of mine went in for a tune up. One bike the brakes barely function anymore. Before the tune up I could lock them up. Now they barely stop me. The presta valve wasn't seated properly and tore the tube shortly after riding it. When I asked them why the brakes aren't working as well anymore I was told that disk brakes can't lock up the tires. That was a first for me. The mountain bike I took in wasn't adjusted. I had to adjust the derailer my self after taking it for a ride. They make you feel like if you don't ride a specialized then your aren't worth their time. read more

After searching for a bike shop near us, Derby came up, and it was close, so we chose them. The place is HUGE. There is every type of bike available, and let alone the accessories for anything you need! We were in need for bike maintenance, and I needed a new helmet. So we dropped the bikes off and went inside for shopping. It's a 'busy' store, meaning it's PACKED with some bike accessory, I swear, I didn't know how much was available. A young woman was apologetic for "our delay" which I didn't feel we had one, as we were looking all around, and then helped me pick a helmet, and how to actually wear and fit it properly. My husband even went home and sized his helmet as our sales person showed us how they should fit. We picked our bikes back up 2 days later, and they feel and look like new. We will absolutely be back to Derby for any biking needs - now that we just moved to Colorado, we expect to be on them a heck of a lot more than before! read more

This little bike shop is the closest one to my house up in Thornton so I tend to stop there when my ride needs a tune-up or, in the case of my most recent visit, it's an emergency. My friend and I are all set to go out on the first ride of the season when, of course, I busted the valve on my tube. We took a chance, stopped in to Derby and they were so nice and friendly. One of the techs immediately stopped what he was doing so he could replace the tube for me. I know, I know, I need to get better at these little fixes myself. But until I do, I really like the fact that they are available, service-oriented and have a fully-stocked shop with everything you could possibly need for a road trip. If your bike needs a tune up or servicing, you will most likely need to leave it with the shop because their service area is so busy. But the turn-around time will be reasonable. Also, they have group bike rides every weekend. Sign up to get on the email list for info about where and when they are going. I'm definitely going to give their group rides a try. All in all, I think this place is pretty legit. I didn't purchase my bike through Derby, so I can't comment on side of the business, just the service end. You can tell the techs who work in the shop have a love-hate relationship to their jobs: they love everthing about bikes and hate the fact that they can't be out riding all the time! read more

They held in to my money for 4 days without a wod until they finally refunded. I will contact the bike manufacturer to complain as it gives them a bad name having such unreputable partners Totally unaceptable. read more

Be aware of this place. I brought my bike to "FIX"my bike dropper. They replace it without asking me for dropper options or prices and charge me $360 without my consent. Bill the owner wasn't too worried about it.
