The windows arrived, and when unloading the bow window (which was quite heavy and large), they almost dropped it, and put a small dent in the bottom edge, it isn't fixable. Nothing that interferes with the structural integrity of the window, but it is noticeable if you look right at it. When installing the bow window, they damaged some of the stone wall it rested on. In fairness, the stone had some minor damage before they did anything, but after the window was installed, it had to be repaired. We had to get another company to fix the stonework before the siding could be finished. Excel put in a new sliding patio door, but had the wrong hardware for the door and lock (said it was an order snafu), so we had to wait another two weeks for that. The siding crew were going along fine until one of them managed to cut his hand wide open, necessitating an immediate trip to the ER. After all the stonework was finished, after some prodding, they came back and finished everything. The owner made an adjustment on our bill because of all the delays, which was appreciated. Everything (aside from the dent)looks ok. Today, we found metal scrap pieces and a box of nails in the side yard, and about 1/2 a box sprinkled through the grass in the side yard, and that was just what we could find ourselves. The owner is coming over this afternoon with a magnet to sweep the yard. This should have been done the last day of the job. Unprofessional to say the least, and I'm tired of the excuses. If you want to babysit grown men, hire this bunch. They do ok work, but take forever, and it's one thing after another, excuse after excuse. Just think about how high your bs tolerance is, and hire accordingly. Knowing what I do now, I would have chosen differently.

I paid them a significant amount of money to install siding, with the bulk of the cost covering installation of furring strips to which they were supposed to nail the siding. Upon close examination of the work once completed, I discovered they had nailed the siding straight into the side of my house (instead of installing furring strips). In skipping the furring strip step (for which I had paid), they materially changed the terms of the contract without clearing the change with the homeowner and saved themselves two days of labor in an effort to maximize profits, quality be damned. Excel Remodeling's actions were dishonest, and as the owner of the company admitted in the aftermath, a poor business decision. He explained to me that they weren't trying to pull one over on me, but that his foreman had made this business decision and informed the owner two days into what was supposed to be a four day job. Nonetheless, the owner never bothered to mention this important fact to me at any point after he was informed of this change, so judge for yourself. To be fair, once Excel Remodeling was caught skipping steps in their work, the company did return to my home, took every piece of siding down, installed the furring strips they were contractually obligated to install in the first place, and reinstalled the siding. They did this without trouble, quickly, and the owner was quite apologetic. Regardless, "Caveat Emptor," as the saying goes.

In fact, when we first hired him, it was from a neighbor referral. Unfortunately, we have not had the same positive experience and, instead, would like to share a warning. Grab a glass of wine, it's a long one.  We hired Badger Contracting to replace a roof on our 1958 Gordon Sugar home in 2018. It was a warranty claim and the owner, Barry Flacks, was initially friendly and responsive, and clearly understood the insurance game. The crew he hired, however, turned out to be unfamiliar with flat roof construction and, on first attempt, failed to retain the MCM aesthetic. Despite a street of identical houses they could have used as a reference, it was starting to look like an 90's builder special (and with a moat of rusted nails yeeted into the grass). Throughout the project, they were tearing out and re-installing elements. By the time the roof replacement was "complete," there were half a dozen patches already in place on our brand-new roof. We were not impressed, but he was paid in full--as it was an insurance claim, there wasn't much we could do.  We called Barry back a few months later when the ceiling in the living room started leaking. And then a few more months later for the same. Then they came back when there were mushrooms growing in the master bedroom closet. Another time, they had to come back to switch a downspout that was mistakenly installed upside-down and catching debris. This was around the time he told us that he never used that crew again. Badger returned frequently--well beyond our 5-year labor warranty which we asked to be extended on good faith. It was clear his profit margin on our roof was shrinking, and it showed in the way we were treated. None of these return trips were prompt, communicative, or friendly. We would come home to men on the roof without even a return phone call, and then no update on work performed. Over and over again.  We were never out to ruin anyone's livelihood. We know Barry has a working relationship in the community and we've wanted to believe that our experience was a one-off due to a poor crew and, other than not passing on Badger's contact info, we kept our experience to ourselves. Our most recent experience with Barry, however, has convinced us that we need to share the continuation of this story. Our 8yo roof failed inspection when we went to sell. Badger came out and performed a repair on soft spots identified by his crew (but we discovered not everything on the inspection report). Then Barry lied to us about the work performed when he insisted that the roof wasn't regraded and that the soft spots were caused by a clogged drain, "maybe a mouse."  But we were on the roof with the roofer. We spoke with him about the work and the crew leader pointed out the low spot, the pooling, and acknowledged it being the cause of the rot--not the drain, which was adjacent. We took a dozen photos as he re-sloped that area. The roof in that area wasn't sloped correctly to begin with. Second and third inspections were performed by certified roofing contractors. They both identified the same additional repairs that needed to be made and submitted their own quotes for repairs. Understandably, after Badger failed to catch (or repair) what their peers had noted, our buyers did not want Badger to return. When we presented those two estimates to Barry and asked that he cover the cost of the lower estimate, he delayed correspondence through the weeks leading up to settlement--not responding until well after we closed. We covered the expenses of the repairs at closing because an 8yo roof should be sound and it was the right thing to do. Again, we asked for reimbursement. Five weeks later, Barry reached out to say that he will not be reimbursing us because 1) he doesn't agree with the three inspections noting the same areas of concern; 2) he feels his crew should have been permitted additional opportunities to address repairs; and 3) it was on us as the seller to negotiate the cost of his failing roof into our sale price. So here we are. Dropping reviews across the internet and hoping to avoid small claims court, but certainly not opposed to traveling down that road.

I thought to myself, there has to be some hidden costs....well two years went by and I finally called them. Weathermaster window company out of Baltimore! They came down to Rockville to estimate my house and I was pleasantly surprised that they honored there coupon price and even insisted that I was not required to pay sales tax! Joe Montegna is an honest business man and accomplished everything he said he would for the price he said he would. So I asked him if he knew a good roofing company..... He immediately recommended Mr.Fix-it Home solutions, also out of Baltimore.....he went on to explain that they had just done his own roof and also did his nephews roof for a really low price and very high quality! I was like, really? Unheard of in my past experiences..... he told me to call Alex over there and mention the referral.......(sorry I am getting to the point soon) I called Alex and he came down and walked the roof with me and gave me a really great price with extras thrown in gratis to make me feel good,I guess......I mean he said he would do a roof vent free,he would pay for up to six plywood sheets of sheathing that would probably be needed......and he upgraded me to architectural shingles when I did not even ask for them........well suffice it to say they came down from Baltimore and completed my roof in one day.....and those shingles look amazing......and it comes with a certificate of guarantee that is transferrable for like 25 years! I am liking Baltimore contractors......so Alex changed the name of his company to Four Seasons Roofing.......and I followed my success with windows and roof by asking Alex if he did vinyl siding or knew of someone that was good.......he said he does indeed do Vinyl and we set up a future appointment.....won't bore you all but great price again, great service.....I mean did the whole job in one day plus three hours the following day......this job blew me away! I mean a new roof is great and new windows are great....needed to be done and all but not nearly as exciting as new vinyl siding! My house looks like its a brand new house! No joke my neighbors all came over and just stared at it......"Bob your house looks amazing, like new" they suggested light grey siding and black shutters, and bright white trim.......I actually felt good about spending the $7500 which was very very reasonable..... I mean like new car feel good spending......I now have a completely low maintenance exterior and I have a new found perspective about researching and hiring contractors......I would say don't be afraid to call Baltimore area companies to give you an estimate......especially Alex and his guys.......oh and what did he throw in......sorry I love freebies.....he installed my new storm door, and new exterior lights, and he also let me fill his trailer up with the cabinets and demo trash from my kitchen which I am re-doing myself.......well trying to do myself......more reviews about that later......you can read my other reviews to tell that I like to research stuff to get the best value......for my hard earned money.....I hope you all take advantage of my experiences.....I have a second home and I will call Alex and Joe when needed ....in a heartbeat....I'm gonna go outside and stare at my new house now!

For the first time I realize I had been hearing a fair amount of outside noise (which I'd apparently gotten used to), because these windows/doors are soundproof; now I don't hear anything at all from outside! And even better, the windows are easy to open, and my sliding glass doors actually slide well in the track, and are not shaking and drafty when it's windy outside -- major improvements from my old, builder-grade, 20+ year-old windows/sliding door. Further, the service crew was excellent -- careful, kind, professional, efficient, and they cleaned up everything afterwards. Roger, the foreman, has been doing this work for almost 30 years, and Jose, who single-handedly carried in/out the windows/doors, has been doing this work for 10+ years. I didn't get the name of the quiet third service person who was mostly outside and on the ladders, also very efficient. fyi, they did mention that working on the 4th floor of our condos from ladders was a bit more challenging as the original builder-grade windows had been made to fit by being packed/taped in place from the outside, which necessitated them having to actually break some of the glass to be able to pull the old windows out. But they did it - and did it well. Finally, Shaun, the project manager who gave me my estimate and oversaw the project from estimate, HOA approval process, to completion, was great. Highly recommended.
