Heard thru the…read morecoconut wireless that one of the TSA lines was shut down so it was recommended to get to the airport early. Arrived early and was standing in line which went all the way to Southwest Airlines counter area , with nothing to do I observed a KITV vehicle driving by. A few minutes later reporter Jeremy Lee is taking video of the long line and asking people if they wanted to be interviewed. I believe KITV was the first station doing the story and highlighting the problems with the broken TSA equipment at Hilo airport. Hopefully the news coverage will put pressure on TSA and airport personnel to resolve this issue.

Although I don't watch much television, I know that KIKU features Japanese, Filipino, and even some Chinese shows. KIKU has been around for many years and is an independent television station in Hawaii. Located in Downtown Honolulu on Bishop Street, KIKU Television Station has its office in the Pacific Guardian Center on the 14th floor of the Mauka Tower. I parked in a metered parking stall on Merchant Street, about 2 blocks away. When I opened the door, the receptionist asked me, "Are you a winner?" Haha! After completing a waiver form, she handed me an envelope with a gift card from JQ (Japan Quality) Store. I was so happy! They took a picture and I was on my way to shop! This is a great service for local businesses! This Instagram contest, sponsored by KIKU, helps to advertise small businesses and bring more awareness to customers! Mahalo!

Other than "s'koshi," a WWII import by occupation GIs like my tāmā, I knew almost no Japanese language. But I knew I wanted to be stationed there. So I'd go to okazuyas like the one on South King with pictures of osumo rikishi Takamiyama, Jesse Kuhalua, who resembled la'u tāmā 'afakasi. At home, I would watch Samurai Kinsan and other dramas on KIKU. Ryōtarō Sugi, what a hunk! And another period piece, Oshin, I believe, about palace intrigue. Falsely accused of treachery by a rival, Oshin flees. When she is caught, she commits seppuku in the way of male samurai, choosing hara kiri rather than a short sword to her throat. Much to his horror, her head is delivered to the weakling lover who believed his lying wife (?) and ordered Oshin's execution. Would love to see those shows again. Bring it all back. I practiced the station's signature "Kochira wa Honoruru desu, ju-san chaneru, K-I-K-U, KIKU, nihongo terebi desu." Translation: This is Honolul Channel 13, KIKU, Japanese language television. Memories! I did get stationed in the Kanto Plain from 1980 to 1983, living in Yokohama-shi, Asahi-ku, Shirane-cho. Taking Japanese 101 & 102 at UH helped takusan, mochiron. Good times! Thank goodness KIKU is back to normal.

This review is about the KHON2 STUDIO itself and staff I encountered (and not about any of my…read moreopinions on reported content that airs on TV). I was invited to come tour the studio last Sunday evening along with my child who was one of a group of young middle-school journalism students. The students were invited to see what it is like behind-the-scenes at KHON2. It was a very informative and enjoyable experience! First of all parking for studio guests was very convenient. There were marked stalls for guests to use just inside the parking entrance at the ground floor of the building. If these stalls are all occupied it is still very easy to park across the street at Ala Moana Shopping Center. A staff member working with the students met and guided all of our group into the building, and introduced us to some of the people who were working there. They were preparing for that Sunday evening's live 6 PM news report. The students and parents were able to tour the inside of the studio, see some of the offices and editing rooms, and then we were able to watch what happens in the control room and also be in the studio while they filmed the news live! When the live broadcast was over we were able to talk story with the control room director, camera operators, and newscasters, and also got to play a bit with the weather green screen, which the students had so much fun doing! At the end of the tour they let us take some photos behind the news desk, and if you've seen the news desk on TV it's very pretty with the beautiful ocean wave graphics on the big high-tech screens behind the newscasters. Well let me tell you, the whole set looks just as pretty in person and I wish I had a wall like that in my own house LOL! It was very interesting to see five or six news cameras all being controlled by one guy in the room. Technology sure has come along way from 'The old days' :). All in all I think it was eye-opening for everyone. All of the staff we encountered were very friendly, and I'm grateful my child and I got to experience this tour together, as I could see her eyes being opened in a whole new way right in front of me. Took the Basic Media Production course. The course was 3 hours nightly for 5 nights. In person…read moreseatings were limited due to COVD but I was able to do the class on Zoom. The class taught basic knowledge of Pre Production, Production and Post Production. Instructors Wes and Brandee were awesome!! They were methodical and super patient with time to answer lots of questions. Amongst the numerous topics , the class covered everything from Story Boarding, Shot List, Using the Camera to Editing. Because I attended from home on Zoom, they let me take a JVC HD camera home to practice with the class. FYI you will need an SD card. You get a pdf textbook that helps with more in depth details on the information of the course. Once you successfully complete the course, they will email you a certificate which allows you to freely use their cameras and lights. The caveat is your project cannot be commercial and has to be aired on Olelo. Another super cool benefit of completing the course is you can sign up for 1 on 1 tutoring. I will definitely take them up on that.

I've watched programming over the years--Kamaka Pili's Aloha Authentic before he went mainstream on KHON2- the public meetings- the talk shows- the crafting show- the fishing- etc. I met a woman recently who said it gave her a safebridge to learn about our local culture and history because she had no clue coming from the east coast. She said watching 'olelo helped her understand and get along with her co workers. I'm writing about my personal experience now: my husband and I took the basic media production certification course so I could produce a show I've been wanting to tell this story but didn't know who or how. My mentor at Patsy Mink Center said--why not do it myself and use 'Olelo? Wes and Brandee were excellent trainers and our classmates were great. It is a LOT to process but lots of fun to learn something new. The staff are all great and helpful. Providing the community a voice is very valuable.

The host, Guy Hagi, is excellent. The problem is with Augie T. He makes jokes on the restaurant and food - basically, using airtime to showcase his "comedy act." It's hard to imagine how anyone watching would seriously believe how great the restaurant and food is, When Augie T was unavailable and replaced with another co-host, the segment improved and became much enjoyable. Please consider replacing Augie T or just have Mr Hagi do the segments himself! Food is not meant to be funny but enjoyed for it's taste. This is no joke.

Salem Media of Hawaii is family's radio broadcast station in Hawaii. They host syndicated talk…read moreshows with Christian values. I was listening to the station one day. They were giving away a pair of tickets to the Janet Jackson concert. I only needed to go to their website to apply. I took a chance on faith and registered. I heard nothing for a few days . I had given up but that Friday I received a call saying they had a pair of tickets for me to the concert. I was screaming...A free pair of tickets to see James Jackson. Yes, I'm coming. I calmly took their address and went back into my meeting. Once I got my lunch break, I headed straight to Salem Media. It's a simply grey building near downtown HONOLULU. The parking there is limited to 5-6 stalls but if you wait patiently people move from them quickly. When I reached the 2nd floor the office, the gentleman at the desk was really cool. I said I'm here for My Tickets. So excited that I had to ask him to take a picture. This is truly a blessing. The next night, Saturday Night my husband and I arrive early because I knew there would be long lines. Guess what..we were able to skip the line. We got seated while everyone was waiting to come in. We had Great Seats with A Great View. Janet Jackson was fire . Morale of this post...enter in every contest you hear. You just might win. Mahalo
