This review is about the KHON2 STUDIO itself and staff I encountered (and not about any of my opinions on reported content that airs on TV). I was invited to come tour the studio last Sunday evening along with my child who was one of a group of young middle-school journalism students. The students were invited to see what it is like behind-the-scenes at KHON2. It was a very informative and enjoyable experience! First of all parking for studio guests was very convenient. There were marked stalls for guests to use just inside the parking entrance at the ground floor of the building. If these stalls are all occupied it is still very easy to park across the street at Ala Moana Shopping Center. A staff member working with the students met and guided all of our group into the building, and introduced us to some of the people who were working there. They were preparing for that Sunday evening's live 6 PM news report. The students and parents were able to tour the inside of the studio, see some of the offices and editing rooms, and then we were able to watch what happens in the control room and also be in the studio while they filmed the news live! When the live broadcast was over we were able to talk story with the control room director, camera operators, and newscasters, and also got to play a bit with the weather green screen, which the students had so much fun doing! At the end of the tour they let us take some photos behind the news desk, and if you've seen the news desk on TV it's very pretty with the beautiful ocean wave graphics on the big high-tech screens behind the newscasters. Well let me tell you, the whole set looks just as pretty in person and I wish I had a wall like that in my own house LOL! It was very interesting to see five or six news cameras all being controlled by one guy in the room. Technology sure has come along way from 'The old days' :). All in all I think it was eye-opening for everyone. All of the staff we encountered were very friendly, and I'm grateful my child and I got to experience this tour together, as I could see her eyes being opened in a whole new way right in front of me. I used to respect Gina Mangieri but recently she seems to be copying someone and lowering her standards. Changed her appearance and today, she wore a plunging neckline, showing her cleavage, much like Brigit when she started, always showing her chest sometimes it's plunging showing cleavage. She seems to enjoy bringing attention to herself. They must remember they are in The News Room, reporting the news, so behave and dress professionally, do not bring attention to yourselves.Thank goodness for Jill Kuramoto, glad to see her back, a true professional, always respectful and easy to watch. Those others can learn from her. so I now hardly tune in to this channel, only when surfing and come upon it and watch for a couple of seconds. Let me start by saying I'm a regular viewer, and appreciate the skills of your entire team, from News to Weather to Sports. I was taken aback tonight however, and disappointed, when I heard Joe Moore refer to the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America. I realize KHON2 is a Fox affiliate, but journalism should be fact based, impervious to political head games. One might hope media outlets that so readily cater to the whims of an emerging autocrat would have more of a spine and commitment to journalistic integrity. I just tired to view a previous interview posted on their site. It has been over an hour and a half and the circular arrow keeps turning but the interview still has not started. As I mentioned before, Khon2 has a terrible record with their technology. In my experience they consistenly have more technology communication problems than any other Hawaii tv station. read more

The comment section on their website is screened. If your comments don't align with their politics, they'll remove them and ban you. It's sad you cannot state your own opinion, unless your opinion matches KHON2's politics and agenda. It makes the comment section useless and boring. read more

I heart the Wake Up 2day crew at KHON. Olena Heu is very kind and makes you feel comfortable when you visit the studio as a guest. Jai is a great guy and he likes to crack jokes with Kirk when the cameras are off. The entire staff is friendly and I like that they tweet and post updates on Twitter and Facebook throughout the morning. You'd assume someone else is posting for Olena, but she seriously tweets in between commercial breaks! She also greets guests, briefs guests, stages the set, and "mics up" her interview, too. It's amazing how much work goes into production. Great job! Things to know: -Limited parking; Only 3 guest stalls (Street parking available) -Be there at least 15 mins before your actual interview time -Kisseten is next door...Coffe and snacks! read more

Went on a tour at KHON 2 today. It was interesting seeing the inside of a television station and being on set while they were broadcasting the 5 pm news! Eeee! It's different from what I've seen on television news shows, or it's just outdated. We got to see Justin Cruz and Kathy Muneno tell us the news for the evening! Ha ha. There was a lot of different aspects of television we got to explore. A big thank you to Kyle who took time out of his busy schedule to take us around and allowed me to take pictures along the way. Kelly Simek has a good presence on screen, an authentic smile and you can tell she's loves her job. Shes gonna go far, making that big money on the mainland. Christine Uayeno on the other hand looks subdued and fake. Heck, blinking Morse code just doesn't look right watching her work. Three stars because overall reporting is better than KITV. read more

As biased as they get. I've had three Facebook comments taken out of one of their posts on different occasions. Non offensive comments that had more likes/agreement than any others. I support debate between different viewpoints as an inclusive learning experience or understanding. However, KHON2 apparently moderates their comment section on articles in order to create the appearance that everyone else's views align with their own. read more

I heart Olena! I've been on the KHON2 morning show numerous times and she's always been a gracious on-air host. Although I consider myself a morning person (not really by choice but because I have a baby), it always amazes me that the newscasters, producers and camera men get there at 3 am every morning for work. I have a tough enough time getting there at 6 am once every couple of months so a big kudos to the hard working morning show crew! The KHON2 staff is always friendly, helpful and wonderful to work with and it's nice to know that they're really kind people in real life. As Nicole K mentioned, the reporters are on Twitter and really consistent when it comes to tweeting out important news and responding back to questions. KHON2 has a parking lot adjacent to the building but there are only a few stalls. It might be better to do metered parking or hop across from Ala Moana Center. The evening news, Joe Moore is too opinionated and emotional, Marisa Yamane I just don't care for her reporting style, and Nestor Garcia... wow, really? Alas, a lot of fake News Media, and this is one of them. Have you ever written on their sites about topics and videos they post up? I have to only waste my time writing them as they won't post most of my criticism because I don't follow through with their Politics and Agenda. I often see a new restaurant that they have an interview on to only be disappointed with the restaurant or food truck itself. They over-exaggerate how good the food is and they claim it is amazing and worth trying out. My last experience was with Birria Taco Truck was the worst experience ever and will never go back there again. Thank you Fake News Media KHON2 you guy's are like Hawaii's version of CNN the number one fake news media source of America. With KHON2 I mainly see stories on this channel that is many days old and always end up on Stolen Stuff Hawaii first. They post it up a few days to almost a week before KHON2 Covers the story. They need to have their people out and do research and reports more often. If Stolen Stuff Hawaii was a Video News Network they would do a lot better than KHON2 ever has as they don't censor people or stories as much as KHON2 does. Also; With Tourism on the rise for Hawaii over the past 2 decades, I will never trust KHON2 again because it seems the new Eateries they advertise on their network is not only meant more for tourist price gauging prices and advertising to the tourist more so. Hawaii's people are highly taxed and exausted in over paying for food that only leaves you starving unless you want to spend nearly $70 on a meal for yourself. This is the problem many Hawaii people have today. So, folks do not trust their food avertisment shows for a new Restaurant as they could be paid by the Restuarant owner to say what they need to say to start their business to grow more profit. It's better to do word of mouth than their false advertisment of KHON2. Did I say they waste your time writing a comment to their article again? I boycotted Channel 2 when teachers went on strike in 2001 because Joe Moore would make snide comments about teachers. SIXTEEN years later, I decide to watch because there was a football game on Channel 8. What a coincidence....Joe Moore made ANOTHER jab at teachers! If it wasn't for Joe Moore this news station would be a joke. I can't stand Justin Cruz, he reports like a 12-year old wearing daddy's shoes. It's so funny, because the person who does the scene changes, clips, enter/exit music always screws up. One time they were talking about some construction improvements in Waikiki and the guy showed footage of a war-torn Iraq. Joe will crack one of these days. read more

For some reason, the quality of news has gone down. Ever since the announcement of layoffs and change in ownership, this station has slowly fallen from the ranks. Well, not so slowly. As soon as they switched to the automated process, I have not seen a show run flawlessly. I think that they need better people there alongside the better technology. Here's a thought...instead of buying automated stuff that is not fully compatible with the existing system, why not get better equipment for the workers so they can do a better job? Maybe a better editing system that rivals some of the other stations and better cameras so the transition into HD in the near future would be easier. Seems like after all the firings, they sure are hiring a lot now. Not a good management system in place. read more

Why is the morning show so silly? So gushing... and over the top. And the local news footage seems to be filmed by the same guy on all the channels? Even the angles and the editing of the footage is exactly same. Aren't the different networks competitors? Sometimes even the order of the news stories are the same on all the channels??? And after 5 -7 minutes of tough, hard-hitting local news stories, you know traffic jams, lava-flow footage, broken water-main, copper theft, Clayton Hee phoniness, local celebrity arrested, anti-police stories- then... they do National and World news- only to let Joe Moore do it over again at 5:30 and again at 6:00! I think the Sports reports are pretty good though - except for using Hawaiian and other words in place of action descriptions - that's not how to get to Espn!! No one goes"Klepto " on Sports Center....lame ! And - the Glitches ... Footage doesn't match the story or doesn't roll when they que it up! I am waiting for the day Joe Moore snaps!! And now "The Always Investigating" segment is poorly researched and irresponsible news reporting. read more

I came here recently on a holiday (Columbus Day 2014) to perform with my crew for a morning news segment. Unlike most of the reviews here, my review is going to be about my actual experience at the news station. They have pretty convenient parking right on Piikoi, across from Ala Moana. The parking is also shared by Kissaten Coffee Shop. Since it was a holiday, parking was a breeze. The entrance to the station is shortly outside of the structure. The person who let us in and guided us to the waiting area was really nice. Ron Mizutani and Diane Ako was on air at the time. They were really nice especially when they let us take a picture with them at the end of our segment (off-air of course). Everything went pretty fast and smoothly. It gave us a feeling of real time and real life news casting even for just a short time. The studio inside is really nice, clean, and bright. I've been to and performed at other different channels/news stations in the past and this one was a good experience as well. read more

Last evening news about the Tentative agreement between the HGEA and the Public workers was not quite correct. Half of the agreement was left out. Here is the essence of that agreement. The tentative agreement includes administrative time off, a 5 percent wage adjustment and a 50/50 employer/employee premium split for the Hawaii Employer-Union Health Benefits Trust Fund (EUTF) benefit plans. The terms of the settlement are for the contract period of July 1, 2011 to June 30, 2013. This agreement is subject to a ratification vote by the membership of each bargaining unit. This contract is final upon a vote of approval by the membership. Most importantly: It is the Public Employees job to carry the financial burden of the budget shortage. I forgot one thing. 5+5=10. Public Employee's paycheck was reduced by 5% already in 2010, so this years deduction of five% makes it altogether 10%. read more
