Happy we got a last minute rental and free upgrade!
Vanessa R.

We have never rented from Payless in the past because I was worried about all the bad reviews. however, after we showed up to Hertz at O'Hare at 6am after a redeye flight with our small kids, tired and not eager to drive another 4 hours, things got worse when Hertz told us our rental was canceled for some reason (it showed I checked in fine so the only thing I could assume is the rude attendant gave away our holiday weekend rental). The hertz attendant that day was not willing to listen or help sort it out and instead told me to call a national number. We walked over to Payless which had no line unlike all the other companies. Gill helped us immediately and was very friendly. He found us a rental immediatel, gave us an airline discount that matched the Hertz price, and even upgraded us. Very happy with our experience and that Gill made a stressful situation much better very quickly!

We had a good experience with this company. The shuttles from and to the airport were clean and the staff were very friendly. We got a great price and a nice car. A cute little brown Kia Soul. Checking in and out were easy. I will say the building had an odd smell. I don't know what it was, but at least it didn't affect the car. The bathrooms are nice and clean too. Just keep in mind that this location is 3 miles from the airport, so give yourself time for the shuttle ride. There's also a reasonably priced gas station very close by. As long as the price is right, I'd definitely rent from this company again.

If I could give this place no stars for this experience I would definitely do so! Now don't get me wrong, I've rented from them in the past and my experiences were nothing like this one! The car they gave me while nice(on the exterior)was on the inside essentially a train wreck. Let's start with the horn that did not work at all! The charging outlet looked as though it had been burnt. Only one side worked and it was also dusty. The car was not vacuumed out front nor back, the inside panels were filthy with crumbs and dirt from however many previous rentals, the seats were either worn out or burnt as well, and the part that holds the seatbelt for the third row was hanging from the ceiling out of place. But since they gave me half off they figured problem solved.. NOT! I paid more to fill up the gas tank than I paid for the vehicle in which I shouldn't have been charged for at all

Very Disappointing Experience -- Beware of Hidden Restrictions and Fees…read moreMy husband and I have used Expedia extensively for many trips, so we were especially disappointed with our experience booking a rental through Expedia with Routes Car Rental. The rental initially appeared to be a good deal, but important restrictions and fees were not made clear before we booked. The "Rules and Regulations" link on Expedia was blank, so we had no way to review these terms in advance. After picking up the car, we received an email informing us that we had been charged a $104.49 border-crossing fee simply because our lodging was about five miles across the Illinois state line. This was a significant surprise and something we believe should have been clearly disclosed before the rental was booked. We also learned only after pickup that the rental had a 200-mile-per-day mileage limit, with an additional charge of $0.20 per mile over the limit. Based on our trip, exceeding that allowance could have added more than $400 to the rental cost. Getting to the Routes location was also inconvenient. We had to take a train and then a shuttle, adding roughly 40 minutes to the trip, and then waited more than an hour before reaching an agent. After receiving notice of the additional charges, we called Expedia directly to try to resolve the situation. Expedia attempted to contact Routes while we were on the phone, but was unable to reach anyone and left a message. We were told to expect to hear back within a few days. Neither Expedia nor Routes ever followed up with us. What has been most disappointing is that this experience has shaken our confidence in Expedia. We have used Expedia extensively over the years and have generally trusted the information presented when making our travel arrangements. In this case, important rental restrictions and potential charges were not clearly accessible before booking, and when we contacted Expedia about the problem, the issue was never followed up on. After this experience, we will think twice before relying on Expedia for future rental car bookings.

I booked the reservation on the Enterprise website and it allowed me to make the reservation for 5:00pm. When I landed in Chicago with all of my luggage I took a taxi to the Enterprise location that was away from the airport location. The location was closed. What I don't understand how the company would allow me to make a reservation for a time that they knew very well that they were going to be closed for. So I was forced to rent a car with another company for the night for much more money due to super late notice. Then I drove back an hour to the location to return my current rental car and pick up the enterprise car that I had my reservation for. I returned my temporary rental car I had for the night and then proceeded with a taxi to the enterprise location just to find that they told me that they didn't have a car for me. I was left going with another rental company for a second time and having to wait 3 hours before I could get a car. I spent $875 for my rental car for 5 days all because Enterprise decided to not honor the reservation that they gave me. If there is one question I have it is WHY WOULD ENTERPRISE GIVE ME A RESERVATION WHEN THEY DONT RESERVE ANYTHING FOR ME?! I am all the way across the country from my home and stuck stranded in Chicago without any transportation because enterprise decided to LIE to me about giving me a reservation. Yes that is called LYING. If that isn't lying then IDK what is. My experience with Enterprise was horrendous. I wouldn't recommend using them to anyone. Stay away from this company. If Enterprise wants to contact me and make this situation right then I would have open ears to hear what they have to offer. Otherwise I will never use their company again and will not recommend anyone else does either.

It's a long line like the DMV's, while Alamo and Enterprise next to it had no lines as they operate smoothly. I got stuck at Thrifty's because I booked it through Expedia and it's non-refundable and dates not even changeable! To make matters worse, Thrifty's charged me $489.24 on top of the $354.84 I already paid Expedia (so $844.08 total for 4 days use!) and I didn't notice it until too damn late! So apparently I bought myself two full coverage policies, TWO! One from Expedia, the other from Thirfty's. I took my complaint to Better Business Bureau but arghhh it's apparently my fault for not paying attention to the receipt! I didn't even use up all the gas in that car either, I didn't have time! I got charged $80 for fuel. I paid so much. The attendant charged up everything and I had not paid attention! I will NEVER pick Thrifty's again, ever, and will tell my story to anyone, everyone who would listen, for years!

Looking back at the rental documents loss damage coverage that I did not agree to had been added. I had declined the additional coverage in person picking up the vehicle because I am covered on my personal insurance. Then, after going through my options to which I said no, I had to sign. It was one of those pin pads for signing that don't show you the full waiver, but just leave a small box for your signature. I called customer service, after not hearing back from my first inquiry for a week, and was told because I signed there's nothing they would do. I get it, lesson learned, always double check, but still a shady practice and answer for customer service to say, welp, you signed it. I'll never use this company again.

It took us over 2 hours to rent the van because: First : they tried to up charge us for add-on's making our $500 rental price increase to over $1,000. I kept telling the woman I only wanted what I paid for through Expedia- then she tried selling me insurance after I told her I had already purchased it thru Expedia- she was adamant that the insurance I purchased thru them wouldn't cover the van I reserved. I contacted Expedia on the spot and they assured me their insurance would cover the vehicle I reserved . She told me to tell them I wanted a refund from them for the insurance because I was going to use mine - but to purchase hers - I told her I wasn't going to do that- I would keep what I bought through Expedia. Second: Then she tried to change my van from a 15 passenger to a 10 passenger with an additional charge of $250. I told her I didn't not want the 10 passenger van. So then she said she would change the van for only $100 extra- I don't know why she wanted me to get the 10 passenger van so badly- she said because I only had 10 people with me but I told her we rented the bigger van so we would have more room for us since we had 2 car seats that take up space. After being there for over 2 hours she took us to our van- she said if the van was returned dirty they charge a cleaning fee of $150- I looked inside and saw the van was dirty and had stains- I asked her if they charge a cleaning fee why was the van dirty? She said we could wait for them to wipe it down. We were so tired we said no thanks - we just wanted to get to our room. I took photos and the inside and outside of the van for documentation. The van itself was ok- you could tell it was used - and it hadn't been cleaned but I mean it was a rental and it got us around. When we returned the van they said we broke the bumper. I honestly didn't see this when I rented it because it was dark and raining/snowing when we got the van. But luckily I went through my pictures I took before I drove off with the van and you can clearly see it was already broken before we rented it. The employee said to send him the photo of it broken and the photo would have a time stamp. I sent the photo and he agreed that we did not break it. I won't rent from them again- it was just a huge pain. And a note to anyone who rents from them- or any rental place- Take photos of the inside and outside of the vehicle- document everything that's broken- scratched - dirty. And be aware of the up charges that are not needed.

Hertz Rent A Car

Needed a car to rent for twelve days for my wife and me during our 10 day upper Midwest road trip…read more Decided to spurge a bit to get a nicer car, and surprisingly found the Hertz at O'Hare to have the best price for an airport rental of a luxury mid-size SUV (Volvo XC60 or comparable) at $572.32. I booked directly with them and there was no mention of additional charges collected at time of rental, just that it had to be prepaid and was non-refundable. We had the last Delta flight from LAX to ORD so my wife, her mom, and I got into Chicago around midnight. The Airport Transit System (train) will take you to all the terminals and multi-modal facility where all the rental car agencies are. Terminal 5 is the last stop before it, and the train cars were pretty full by the time it came to us, even this late. We had to abandon our luggage cart, and hand-wheel our luggage, finding space. I've been a member of the Hertz Gold program for a while, back to my corporate days, and knew to skip the rental counter and go directly to the garage to see my name in lights. It didn't matter since, the main rental counters were all closed this late at night, so everyone had to go to the garage. Sure enough, my name was listed, but instead of showing where I could pick up my car, it said to see the counter attendant. There was only one person there, and there was a line. Once it was my turn, it turned out the car wasn't ready for us. I think they don't want to have the XC60 for others to choose, so they had to get it 'from the back'. It didn't take very long to do that, and everyone was perfectly civil about it. However, they hadn't checked me out, so when we got to the gate to leave, we had to do the checkout process with the attendant (she was not happy since someone before hadn't their job). We went through a car scanner which recorded the outside condition of the car. As for the trip, I was really happy with the car. It had some of the most comfortable car seats I've ever used (fully adjustable for both upfront seats, with lumbar support) and the back seats were heated. The power moon roof was so large, though we couldn't use it much open since it was hot and sunny during our trip. It also surprisingly didn't have wireless Apple Play, so had to find a USB-C cable, and then it worked fine with Navigation and Spotify. It was a really good trip, and the SUV had a lot to do with that. Bringing the car back, once you got close to O'Hare, it was important to follow the signs for rental car return, vs following the directions on Google Maps. We passed through a similar car scanner when we entered the lot. We didn't have to wait for anyone to check us out, just leaving the keys on the dash. For once, we didn't forget anything in the car. We got an itemized bill by email in a couple of hours. We took the train back to Terminal 5. A couple of days later, we got another email saying that the car had been returned with no damage. However, they also charged the additional money as well, so I opened up an incident to explain the charge. We'll see where that goes. Stats: 10 states visited (IL, WI, IA, MO, KY, TN, AR, MS, OH, IN), missing two of the Mississippi River States (MN, LA). 7 gas stations visited on trip, $294.20 spent, 72 gallons used, 2,133 miles driven.
