They have been banned from most local shelters and use various deceptive tactics to circumvent this restriction. Verifying a company's 501c status is pretty straightforward since it's all public record. We looked up AWFA via both the California DOJ website (you can look them up by name or by their EIN 202331353) and the IRS's tool for nonprofits. AWFA's status with California had been revoked since 2016, due to multiple violations against the Supervision of Trustees and Fundraisers for Charitable Purposes Act and therefore they're not allowed to conduct any activity or solicit charitable assets in California. The IRS page shows that AWFA's status was revoked federally on 5/15/2021. We fostered with this "rescue" once and that was enough. The dog we fostered was injured, traumatized, and arrived with no supplies. When we expressed concerns and ultimately decided to get legal advice out of concern for the dog's safety. We stayed in contact with the rescue and requested they not contact us until after we had sought legal advice. The rescue's operator showed up at our door several hours later with local law enforcement who said they had documents establishing ownership, but which they refused to furnish for our review or verification. When one officer suggested we could "do this the easy way or..." we unfortunately relinquished possession of the dog. The dog became terrified upon seeing the rescue owner, to the extent that she lost bowel control and shook uncontrollably. This rescue is a giant red flag. Do not facilitate the harm they inflict, they should rightfully be shut down. This review is real. I am real. I did obscure my identity given this organization's history of weaponizing law enforcement.

The application was super straightforward, just thoughtful, easy questions that kept things relaxed and zero-stress. We got a response from the wonderful foster mom within a day. Meeting the puppy at the foster home felt so special, you could feel all the love and care these pups get every single day. Lovebugs Rescue truly operates with so much heart. You can tell they're passionate about finding the perfect forever homes and support both the dogs and new families every step of the journey. We're beyond thankful we found our perfect family addition through them. I highly recommend Lovebugs Rescue. They make it such a joyful, positive, and loving process!

We met with the Foster Mom Sara. She was a delight to work with. She helped with the adoption process and answered all our questions. She even made herself available to us after we brought him home to answer any further questions we might have and to help us with the transition of having Oliver (our new name for him) in our home. I have only positive things to say about Lovebugs Rescue. The process of rescuing Oliver was smooth. They did a thorough job of vetting us to make sure their rescue dog was going to a safe and loving home. They also wanted to make sure it was a good fit all around. I appreciated that. Thank you Lovebugs Rescue for blessing us with our bundle of joy. We love Oliver to pieces!!

I have spent time reading through the reviews for Girls of Dog Rescue, and I am honestly…read moredisappointed by the one-star reviews left by people who were denied adoption due to the rescue's clearly stated rules. Shame on anyone who tries to damage a rescue organization simply because they couldn't accept that they didn't meet the adoption requirements. These rules are in place for one reason: the safety and lifelong well-being of the dogs. Girls of Dog Rescue is strict because they care. They limit adoptions by location so they can conduct proper home visits and ensure each dog is placed in a safe, stable environment. That level of responsibility should be applauded, not criticized. People also forget that rescues are not free to operate. Vet bills, spay/neuter surgeries, medications, vaccinations, food, and rehabilitation for neglected dogs all cost money. Expecting a rescued dog to be "free" ignores the reality of what these organizations take on to save lives. I also appreciate that this rescue requires their dogs to be seen by their designated veterinarian until the dogs reach a certain age. This ensures the dogs receive proper medical care and are spayed or neutered, rather than relying on promises that may never be kept. To those leaving one-star reviews because you were denied: this isn't personal -- it's responsible rescue work. To Girls of Dog Rescue: thank you for putting the dogs first, even when it's unpopular. The glowing, five-star reviews from successful adopters clearly speak louder than the complaints from those who didn't qualify.

After recently losing my beloved Yorkie of 9 years, my husband and I decided to honor her memory by…read morerescuing rather than purchasing from a breeder. We came across an adorable Shih Tzu pair (a brother and sister) and submitted an application expressing interest in one of them. Within seconds of submitting, I received a call. The representative hadn't read my application at all. When she asked if I currently had a dog and I explained mine had just passed, there was zero acknowledgment; no condolences, nothing. She then informed me it was "unethical" to adopt just one puppy and that I'd need to take both. When I agreed to take both, she reversed course, saying the siblings would "fight" and I couldn't take them together. When I offered to adopt two unrelated dogs instead, the story changed again; apparently a doctor had just been approved for the dog I applied for, mid-conversation, and I was redirected to a one-year-old Yorkie before being abruptly dismissed. The inconsistencies were glaring, the policies shifted in real time, and the entire interaction was handled without a shred of compassion. I am a registered nurse and my husband works in the entertainment industry; we are experienced, attentive pet owners who gave our Yorkie an exceptional life. None of that was considered because my application was never actually reviewed. This experience is precisely why so many people turn to breeders and pet stores instead of rescues. When grieving applicants are met with dismissiveness, fabricated barriers, and contradictory excuses, it doesn't serve the animals; it leaves them in shelters longer. I hope the organization takes a hard look at how their team communicates with prospective adopters.
