Review: Experience with Paul the Computer Guy I need the "E" key on my ASUS ROG laptop repaired. I was aware this might require a full keyboard replacement. I still do. I first sent an email, and a week went by without any response. After following up, I was asked for additional model information, which I immediately provided. A week later, I was told the replacement part was not available. I then found a replacement keyboard online and asked if it would work. The answer was yes, but only if a special tool was used, and they do not have this tool. Response received: "That would work, if I had the equipment to heat mold the keyboard in. Unfortunately, the keyboard is attached with melted plastic, not screws, so it requires special equipment. I would need the entire palmrest/upper case to do the repair." Communication was slow, and there was little expressed interest in completing the repair I need.. ASUS has also not been helpful. The result is that I have a 2-year-old laptop that is close to unusable because of a non-functioning "E". read more

Still under warranty, I took it to Paul's along with the original sales receipt. These guys are the BEST. I had a thumb drive that stopped working and originally took it to Best Buy. They said they weren't sure if they could recover my data (literally 3 years of work) but would try and it would cost $2,500. I almost paid it, but decided I'd research other options. I actually went to Paul the Computer Guy because my computer screen was cracked after flying (damn you Alaska Airlines!) and thought to ask about the thumb drive. "We know what the heck we're doing." That's the slogan for the business known as Paul the Computer Guy. Based on our single experience as customers, we'd say they got the slogan right. Yes, there really is a Paul. Paul Spencer. He came to our house to take a look at my desktop PC that was having a slew of problems. Well, eight problems. Making it virtually unusable. (No Yelp. Eeek.) When I called to set up the appointment, I also emailed an itemized list. What the problem was, when it started, what I had already done to try to correct it. Paul arrived with list in hand. He said to date few of his customers had been so organized in preparing a detailed listing. Ha! I used to work in technology and the folks in my team did troubleshooting for complex network applications. And here I am these days, needing to have someone fix my single ol' PC. Embarrassing. So I thought I'd best be prepared. Because time is money when you're working with a technical service like Paul the Computer Guy. Literally. And while the services are not the least expensive, you get what you pay for in top quality. I only had to wait about a a day and a half for a home visit. (Had I been able to cart in the drive it would have been quicker.) In addition to fixing some problems on site, and taking my desktop back to the office for his team to do additional work on the drive and diagnose a failure of my external back up drive and replace it, Paul also did some troubleshooting to try to identify why my hubby's laptop, which had been printing to our networked printer, was no longer able to do that thing. The folks in the Computer Guy office (all computer girls actually at the time) were professional in setting up the appointment, Paul arrived when they said he would, the PC (once taken to the shop) was returned when they said it would be (and only away from home for a day) and they called to report the failed back up drive and get authorization to replace it, offering the replacement at a very fair price. All in all, we were happy campers. Even after Paul presented us with the bill for the time spent and new back up drive. Happy enough and trusting enough both that come fall I'm thinking I'll have him replace the OS in this PC. There aren't a lot of people I'd trust to do that. I trust Paul and The Computer Guy team. Next time I want to chat with someone who thinks they know more then I do and then continue on to lie to me about the process while someone is calling them out as over exaggerating...well they shouldn't be in a customer service based industry. Micah and tech Ryan are #1 in my book. Both are calm and laid back, so when a flustered customer (like me) comes in, you feel like you are in good hands. After trying to revive my ancient Gateway, Ryan's suggestions for new computer brands, processors and retailers was right on. Dropped off my wife's Macbook Pro for repair and was told that their Mac person would be in later that day and would take a look at it. Almost a week went by and we heard nothing. I finally called to enquire about the status and the person I spoke with said that they would "look into it and call me back." Nothing. I went in the next day and told them I was there to pick it up. The employee went in the back for several minutes, brings out my wife's laptop and says "is that the one?" No explanation or apology until I replied "Yep. Thanks for nothing." Employee replies "sorry about that." Very unprofessional and poor communication. If you need a repair take it somewhere that appreciates your business instead. read more

Recently I brought in a used Mac computer that I needed set up to also handle Windows. They cleaned out old unwanted data, set up the capability to boot-up as a Mac or Window PC, and got it back to me in quick order. For our business, I needed a VPN set up to access sensitive files on our office network. Using remote access, that was accomplished in just a matter of minutes. I bought a new laptop from Paul the Computer Guy and from the very start it was extremely slow. I called multiple times within the first few months to try and get a refund. They would not, however, they said it was under warranty, so I brought it in to be fixed. It came back just as slow as it was from the start. I called back and they said they fixed it and there was nothing more they could do. It's now a little bit over a year old and I've used it less than 10 times because of how frustrating it is to use. This place is a joke. Really unclear and awkward customer service. I am terribly unhappy and displeased with my experience there. I was told my computer would be backed up and my music/pictures/documents would still be there after updating the software and cleaning out the junk. Not the case. everything was deleted and when I asked all they had to tell me was there was a miscommunication. Oh well thats helpful. He didn't offer to try and fix it. I had to call back asking if there was anything they could do. Well, yes actually we can run a recovery, but without telling me they are going to charge me, until I pick it up a day later and then its another 50 bucks and most of the files are halfway there if at all. The experts at Paul the Computer Guy saved the day (side note: I don't know who Paul is, but I never saw him, therefore don't think he deserves the credit...it should be titled Susan the Mac Magician). Anywho, took my dead iMac in to be diagnosed, fearing the worse (either a costly bill to fix it or no ability to repair and and even higher bill to replace with a new Mac...they aren't cheap, folks!). Instead, with excellent customer service and ample communication, got my trusty ol' iMac back, good as new, at a very reasonable price. I cannot express my gratitude enough to Micah at Paul The Computer Guy. Not only is he extremely talented, well versed as a technical person, but he is extremely caring. He went above-and-beyond for me and I am truly overwhelmed by it. I brought him a DVD of very sentimental images from our daughter's first birthday party with our close family. The DVD was not reading on 3 different devices and I brought it to another computer technician for data recovery, who was unsuccessful. I was about to feel hopeless but since these photos have such great sentimental value I did not want to stop attempting to recover them. Micah listened to my needs with such attention and he actually began to troubleshoot my DVD issue while I was at their store. I think he could sense my attachment to the DVD's data because he was very calm and spoke with ease. I tried to manage my expectations to prevent disappointment, but, to my wildest surprise he explained that he could probably restore 80% of its data. I was blown away by his expected outcome to the point of tears. The mixture of his professionalism, his attention, his care/empathy, his time, et cetera et cetera, I was literally a little ball of tears - kind of embarrassing but I couldn't help myself because this experience was, and is, too surreal. Micah let me know that he would copy the data from the unreadable DVD to a thumb drive and have it ready for me in two days. He called me the following day to let me know that he was able to recover ALL of my data!!! This guy is something else. He is a diamond in the rough, a person who seems to own the business but does not. Boy was he wrong as it was just reload the drivers on the trusted Win 10.
