The egg tart is a specialty, and I liked that it wasn't super sweet. The travesseiros are ok, but that's a me thing (not a pastry thing). They speak some English there, and it was easy enough to point and order if we got stuck. It's also quite affordable. All our pastries and coffees were about 20 Euro. It's a small interior with outdoor seating if the weather is cooperating, and service was decent enough with so many people in line. My large latte was long on the finish and dark roast flavorful, and my Nutella croissant buttery and only lightly crispy. For me it was the perfect size. But my family ordered what turned out to be surprisingly large salad portions and only made their way through them dutifully. My brother felt the out-of-stock quinoa that the back of house regretfully omitted removed a vital textural and flavor element that would've set off the avocado and absorbed the dressing. My mom criticized the mild vinaigrette on her salmon and walnut salad and felt the lox was too abundant. Still, we three hung out for an hour here, in downtown Lisbon, for €35 after tip, which is pretty excellent value.

One of my sub-goals of that trip was trying basically as many pastel de nata as I possibly could, so seeing a place on our way up to the castle by foot (just after the free elevator), obviously I had to stop and try theirs. By this point I'd tried a whole bunch already, so I can say, out of all of them, the *crust* was really good, possibly among the best I'd had. Perfectly flaky, crispy, flavorful crust, inside of which was totally disappointing filling, a filling that was mostly sugary rather than eggy, and was quite drippy once you start eating it. I can't speak to any of their other pastries, though, we were just here to taste-test all the pastel de nata we could find. :D (If I were back in the area, I'd totally come back to try some of their other, more interesting things.)

We decided to pick up pastries and not wait for a table. The chocolate treat was absolutely a 10/10 and the pastel de nada was almost as good as the founding pastel de nada place. Really a 9/10! I could not find more of those delicious chocolate treats at any other bakery in Portugal.

It was made with cheap vegetable oil and had artificial flavouring in it. If you are expecting to be wowed you'll be quite disappointed. I really wouldn't take another for free. We also got what turned out to be a lousy coffee. We were herded into the take - out part by our guide but as I looked in the window, for customers sitting in, there was a proper coffee machine. For some strange reason the travel guides push tourists into this place by the hundred to buy saying it's old, legendary. It might be old. It might have been good once but today it's all spin. I can't speak to any other pie or pastry here but this one is billed as their famous creation then it is reasonable to believe that it's all vegetable oil, white sugar and artificial flavouring all the way. We were in Vigo Spain in a little bakery a few months ago and their sweet treats were stunningly good but this place is lousy.

Fábrica da Nata focuses on doing one thing extremely well: Portuguese custard tarts…read more The pastéis de nata are served fresh and warm, with the signature caramelized top that gives way to a smooth, creamy custard center. The custard strikes a great balance -- rich and eggy but not overly sweet. The pastry shell is where these really shine: thin layers of laminated dough baked until they're deeply golden and crisp. The result is that perfect textural contrast: crackly pastry on the outside and silky custard inside. Like most Portuguese pastry shops, the setup is straightforward. You order at the counter, the service is quick, and the focus is on getting the tarts to you while they're still warm from the oven. Cinnamon and powdered sugar are available to sprinkle on top, which adds a nice extra layer of flavour. Lisbon has many places competing for the title of best pastel de nata, but Fábrica da Nata holds its own. The quality is consistent, the tarts are fresh, and it's an easy stop whether you're looking for a quick snack or a traditional Portuguese pastry with coffee.

I saw in the window when I first walked in delicious looking flakey croissants. But when I ordered a chocolate filled croissant, it didn't look like what I saw or thought I saw/wanted! It must be a different kind, because this was thicker, denser, and more bready than a traditional croissant. The chocolate filling was also thick and hard. It wasn't bad, but not what I wanted. When we went for lunch the day before we did not know that this café was also the breakfast part of our bed and breakfast. We stayed at a bed-and-breakfast the next street over and both mornings a continental breakfast at this café was included. This is one of the best breakfasts I have ever had as part of the bed-and-breakfast. We were each served a portion of fresh fruit (which changed by the day), a boiled egg, a couple slices of ham and cheese, a pastel de nata, a basket of crossiants and rolls to share, and whatever you would like to drink. I had fresh squeezed orange juice, and a latte both days. Thankfully, like most places in Portugal they offer dairy alternatives. I honestly still dream about this breakfast.
