Dr Paul Kim operated on my left ankle. I was experiencing my ankle buckling. Dr. Sue recommended Dr. Kim. Dr. Kim said my tendon was coming off of my heel. He operated on me in December 2022 and put a pin in my ankle. Surprised because he never told me he was doing that. Lack of communication. I experienced swelling in my ankle. He said it would go away in a year now it's April 2025 and it's still swollen. He left the practice in Marin and now was in Los Gatos. I will not go back to him. You immediately feel his kind, calm demeanor and instantly feel comfortable, and that this is a doctor who knows what they are doing. He patiently explained the procedure and answered my questions. Every member of his staff, from the folks in office to his nurses in the surgery center were top notch, friendly, kind, warm and fun. I really cant rave enough about what a great experience I have had with Dr. Kim, and will be having him do my bunions this fall. My recovery on having my ankle rebuilt from a bad fall has been pretty seamless, and I am having near 100% recovery only a couple of months post op. IM SOLD!!! I cannot in good conscience recommend Dr P Kim. In 2020 He performed surgery on my ankle to repair a torn tendon, the outcome was not good. I ended up with a damaged nerve, and the tendon was not fixed. Due to this botched job, I can no longer hike, something I loved doing, walking for any distance becomes painful. I believe I would have been better off if I never agreed to do the surgery. To top it off, he is rude, blaming the PT for my failure to improve, did not listen to my complaints of pain and lack of motion after the surgery. As others have noted, he is very dismissive and has no patience to listen to what you say if he is no longer trying to sell you on a procedure. read more

Doctors are human beings and they don't always get everything right even when they may have good intentions. choose your surgeon carefully and get a few opinions and pay attention and look at reviews. Try not to get swept up by the quick fix because although tempting, reality will win every time. EVERY TIME. Dr. Kim was nice but he was not a good choice for my foot. I suspect the office is overloaded because they are not responsive post operatively. I am guilty of not doing the due diligence. Butcher. Two failed surgeries for my dislocated ankle. Finally had it fused at UC Irvine because I had no other choice. A fused ankle sucks.

I broke my foot in the beginning of September and after two months of misery discovered that it had not improved at all. I demanded a second opinion and ended up in the office of Paul Kim. I took my elderly father to Dr. Paul Kim. The doctor met us in a very unpleasant manner, just talked and didn't eve examine his leg. He sent us for an MRI and post MRI we did not hear from his office. Once we called them they told us that the earliest we could meet them was 1 month later. After many call we got the chance to get a tele-health visit. Which was canceled last second and my father was transferred to another doctor. At that meeting I also reiterated my concerns regarding pain medication post surgery. He showed no empathy or concern to my situation. Dr Kim is confident, pleasant-mannered and clearly well-educated but I learned the hard way that these positive attributes were not commensurate with actual experience, particularly when it comes to foot/nerve issues. His post-graduate work began in 2015, and for me his six years of professional experience translated into three misdiagnosis', several months of wasted time and compounded physical suffering (my feet were so bad I was in a wheelchair, in severe pain 24/7, and losing money/employment by the day). After three months of visits, when he finally realized the actuality of my ailment (Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome), Dr. Kim still preferred to perform more tests while prescribing me steroids and anti-seizure meds (neither of which were effective courses towards an actual treatment), rather than directly address the issue and a path to healing. He was clearly in no hurry, and the prolonged delays were traumatic. If you suspect you have nerve related issues in your foot, especially Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome, you would be wise to find a podiatrist who has been trained by The Association of Extremity Nerve Surgeons (https://www.aens.us). After my experience with Dr. Kim, I found an Aens-certified podiatrist and the difference was dramatic. My new doctor was able to quickly diagnose and confirm my problem (Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome), and with hundreds of Tarsal Tunnel surgeries under her belt, had the experience and confidence to promptly resolve the issue. Within one week of my initial visit, she performed surgery and within two weeks I was back on my feet and on a path to recovery. This new doctor even provided her personal cell phone should any urgent post-op questions come up, and texted me on Christmas morning to see how I was doing! This brings up another RED FLAG and major frustration in working with Dr. Kim -- it is impossible to communicate or follow up with him on any issue, urgent or logistical, without making an appointment and waiting a minimum of two weeks. Having issues getting Dr Kim's office to coordinate with your insurance and approve a MRI? Make an appointment and wait two weeks. Have a follow-up question after a test or procedure? Make an appointment and wait two weeks. If you are suffering from severe pain and try to "walk-in" to the office and find it empty, and learn that Dr Kim is finishing up with his last patient and it's only 4PM, forget it! You'll be turned away or directed to the ER, or told to make an appointment and wait two weeks. No exceptions! Furthermore, Dri Kim's assistant Kassidy is completely useless and clearly dispassionate about her job. She NEVER answers the phone and rarely if ever returns patient's voice messages, even if left through the front-desk staff at CA Orth and Spine. My advice -- you would be wise to seek out another podiatrist or else wait until Dr. Kim gets a few more years under his belt, develops a little more compassion, and re-staffs. read more

It' been just a week over 6 months since my surgery and my foot feels one hundred percent better then it did prior to Doctor Kim's surgery! I no longer walk on the side of my foot, so the pain in my knee and ankle is gone. Dr Kim examined my foot and said it was unstable. Yep. I severely rolled my ankle 9 years ago and limped in pain for 7 years. No insurance, just the county clinic. When I could get Medicare I bought a supplemental policy. Time to see a specialist. Dr Kim said I did everything I could do but my foot didn't heal correctly. He did a surgery that has "an invisible suture" but really does the job of a cable attached to 2 posts under the ankle. I healed well, finished physical therapy and finally could walk correctly without pain. He showed me his work on X-ray. So happy I did this. That was in Fall of 2017. All I had to pay was co-pay $15 and $75 for surgery center, out patient. He was great. Go get fixed. read more

Dr Kim was caring and careful during my consultations, reviewing the description from a pediatric surgeon of proposed surgery to re-align toes and the tendons connected to the plantar plate. This is a very unusual condition and the surgeon, although skilled, couldn't guarantee the procedure would work perfectly, so I wanted a second opinion and Dr Kim supplied that. First he did an MRI to make sure the tendons were okay, then recommended avoiding surgery. I decided to try orthotics in hopes they might help the condition, and in addition to recommending Paul Kim I'd also like to give a shout out here for orthotics made by "The Shoe Doctor" in Dublin. This doctor should have his license revoked. He put staples and pins in my foot and told me I could walk with a boot after three weeks. After suffering incredible pain for over a year I went to another surgeon who took X-rays which showed the staples and pins had broken. My new surgeon had to put in a titanium plate because the bone had degenerated so much from the surgery of Dr Kim. My new surgeon, Dr Chang, said he would never have anyone put any weight on their foot for at least three months after the surgery the Dr Kim did. That was why everything had broken. It's been six months since Dr Chang did his surgery and I'm just starting to put weight on my foot. To top it off, Dr Kim was rude and dismissive. when I called him the night of my surgery to tell him my eye was in pain he actually responded by saying that didn't work on that part of my body. That gives you an idea of his bedside manner. I would have been okay with bad bedside manner if he had done a good job. oh, and I ended up in the hospital because my foot got infected. When I called Dr Kim to tell him I was in a lot of pain and felt like ripping off my cast (turned out the infection has caused swelling) he told me to "deal with it". I wish I had spoken with other people before I went to Dr Kim because it turned out I knew others who had had bad experiences with him. Beware! He made me a cripple. I went in for minor surgery to have hardware taken out of my fused angle which had been hurting a while. When he was in there he tore 2 tendons by accident and didn't notice. It became infected and I was walking on the side of my foot and getting blisters. He said he'd fix it, so surgery #2 made it worse. I then went to Dr Donatto who said he had to break both bones in my leg to straighten it out. Went to UCSF for a third opinion and he agreed with Dr Donatto (great doctor). Dr Kim didn't agree. I was completely bedridden for 5 months but he straightened my leg. He fixed it but I still have pain. All of this over 1yr. I've been limping so long, that now I need a hip replacement. I was a very active woman before and now I can't walk more than a block. I had the sense that my fractured fifth metatarsal was of minimal interest to him as he squeezed in a cursory glance at my current X-rays in between his more pressing engagements. No information available about best practices for recovery. The odd angle at which the bone knitted itself together didn't look like it would be sound for weight bearing but he said it looked ok to him. OK--as in marginally better than not-OK? OK--but from now on don't expect 100 percent use? Just OK and time's up here. Today when I saw Dr. Kim he basically refused to answer my questions about a potential surgery. He did not like that I was asking basic questions like "how many incisions?" "Where will the incisions be?" "What is the impact of going back into the same location as a previous surgery, in terms of scar tissue?" He said "I don't think we are connecting." Dr Kim is a very capable surgeon . I like him and I think he's a good surgeon .His office staff is not very good.The person that schedules surgeries is the worst. I was recommended to him by Dr Brian Su. but sad that his office staff is not good. Mt Tam failed to diagnose a fractured Tibia for TEN months after I sprained my ankle last year. They missed it on x-rays and MRI. Ten months later, after being told to go to PT for endless sessions and going back to My Tam several times, when I was told to wear braces and orthotics, I said I couldn't stand the pain any longer. So Dr. Kim ordered a CT scan. He then saw the fracture, which healed wrong. I had to have surgery to reconstruct the ligament, amount other things, but it was too late to rescue the tibia. Everything that could go wrong with the surgery did. I ended up in the ER twice. I was out of work for three months. I had to see TWELVE specialists because a NERVE was damaged during my surgery. I had a SECOND surgery with a different doctor. I've spent more money than I can count getting help. And because of the extensive damage caused by Dr. Kim, I will need a THIRD and massive surgery to undo what he did and start from scratch. Not to mention I will need a nerve specialist in the OR to possibly CUT the damaged nerve because I have been in horrible pain for several months. It's been HELL! read more

Dr. Paul Kim is the only treating physician an athlete with injury should have! 18 months ago I was run over by a truck while bike riding my commute into the City. I suffered a horizontal fracture to my sternum, 3 cracked ribs, a broken arm including wrist issues, a fracture fibula, and had most of the tendons on my left ankle "torn asunder." Dr. Kim was remarkable in his analyses of the injuries, treatment recommendations, progressively successful surgeries (3), and referrals - both for physical therapy, and a hand surgeon. Nearly a year later, I was able to road ride 2,000 miles south along the North American Rocky Mountains, participate regularly in open water swim workouts, and recently began an incremental trail running program on Mt. I had a strange experience with Dr. Kim. He is a talker not a listener. I made the appointment to ask about stem cell treatment for my arthritic toe, because I'd found out Dr. Kim does stem cell treatments. As soon as I told him this at the beginning of our appointment he told me he couldn't do the treatment on my toe because the area was "too small." It seems to me this could have been cleared up before I came in. Anyway, before I could respond he launched into descriptions of two types of surgeries and two types of injections, even though I hadn't expressed interest in these types of treatments. One of the surgeries sounded bizarre, a procedure to remove a chunk of bone from my foot to put my toe permanently in a different position. I immediately ruled this out. I also ruled out PRP because I wasn't familiar with it for joint treatment. That left a surgery called a cheilectomy or a cortisone shot. I left the appointment overwhelmed with information I'd never asked for. I spent the next three weeks researching the cheilectomy surgery and trying to figure out how I would recover from foot surgery when I live alone and it's my right foot. After exhaustive research on the internet I came to the inescapable conclusion that I was not a candidate for the cheilectomy and it might even make my toe worse because the procedure removes bone spurs and the spurs are your body's natural way of stabilizing the joint to reduce pain. At this point I should have abandoned Dr. Kim but I didn't know where else to go. Because I was so drained, instead of researching the cortisone shot I asked a friend if she'd had one and she said yes and recommended it. Based on this I went back to Dr. Kim and asked him more questions about side effects. He said the only possible adverse reactions from the cortisone shot could be a white spot on my toe or a rise in blood sugar which would be a problem if I'm diabetic, which I am not. He also said if I "overused" my foot I could end up with more problems but I wasn't planning to. It sounded safe, so I went along with it, and had a massive adverse reaction that triggered a relapse of a painful knee condition I'd had two years earlier. I then did what I should have done earlier, researched cortisone. I found out cortisone shots can have adverse reactions including tendon damage, muscle wasting and bone loss. Dr. Kim never told me any of this. The only positive thing I can say is that he did the shot himself and it was probably done correctly; the problem is that I never should have had it done and I should have been given all the information. I realized later what I really needed was just new orthotics and new sneakers, not an invasive procedure with potential adverse reactions. read more

He was specific, thorough, unrushed and warm in matter as he examined my friend Bob Iles' injured knee. During the discussion he showed us the X-ray of Bob's knee and even drew a helpful diagram to illustrate the procedure to be done. I saw Dr. Kim for a badly sprained ankle about a year ago. He told me my options were a special orthotic that came about halfway up the shin. He said many people find it uncomfortable. When I went to the fellow who makes the orthotic, I asked to try on a sample to see what it was like. It was clear to me there was no way I could live my life in that orthotic, and said so to the orthotic maker. He told me maybe I should get another opinion, which I did. The second doctor put me in one of those rigid boots that comes way up the shin to stabilize my ankle and allow the inflammation to subside. It took four months, but with Dr. Donatto's encouragement I stayed with it. In the meantime, he had me go to the same orthotics guy to get a mold for a rigid orthotic that fits inside a tennis shoe. I have been using that orthotic since I got out of the boot. I am not the least bit aware of it while wearing it, and I have absolutely no discomfort in my ankle. I can even go without wearing it for a few hours a day. Best of all I do not need to have ankle surgery. I am thankful that I got another opinion after seeing Paul Kim. read more

My experience with Dr. Kim has been exceptional. He put my clavicle back together after a nasty mountain bike crash. It required a steel plate and eight pins, but the scar is unobtrusive, clean and straight--his work is very precise. I have two words for my choosing Paul H. Kim to do my foot surgery and they are "BIG MISTAKE". Six months after surgery, my foot is still so numb, I can't even spread out my toes. My foot placement is all off. A recent MRI shows I have more problems now then I did before thanks to him. The surgery he performed did absolutely nothing to correct my original problem (a compressed nerve). The result of his surgery has been a nightmare. I can no longer enjoy any of the activities I've always enjoyed such as walking/hiking. If you do choose him, be aware that he does not like answering questions so be sure to ask lots of them - what exactly is he planning to do, how is he going to do it, what are the risks, benefits, how many of the type of surgery you're having has he done, success rate - you all know the drill. I regret ever having had him do surgery on me. One star is still one too many as far as I'm concerned. read more

I see Dr. Kim regularly for ongoing treatment of a terrible foot injury I sustained in a fall to the beach while kite surfing. After interviewing the topic orthopedic foot and ankle Dr's on the west coast, Dr Kim was the only one who proposed a comprehensive treat plan to repair my shattered Talus bone. Dr. Kim performed major surgery on my foot to repair my talus, and after 7hrs was able to put things right. All the other Dr's simply wanted to fuse all my joints and insert a steel rod in my ankle which would have prevented me from playing any sports in the future. Instead Dr Kim spent them time to study my injury and the time to set it correctly. I owe my ability to walk without pain to Dr. Kim. His user of stem cell and PRP treatment during surgery is another reason to see him for injuries. These are proven cutting edge treatments that no other orthopedic Dr. even mentioned let alone discussed or recommended to me.
