I had shoulder surgery in May 2023 to repair a completely torn rotator cuff and a bicep tear on my right arm. Two weeks after surgery I started PT. At the very beginning I could hardly lift my arm. Now 4 months later my right arm moves almost the same degree as my left (5 degrees different right now). Pain was quite intense the first month, but working with Andrew Phong was excellent. He was great at slowly bringing me along and back to some sense of normalcy. I highly recommend both Andrew and Active Marin if you are in need of physical therapy. I saw one comment about billing. I have not had a problem. I'm nearing the end of my insurance coverage and they have been good about paying attention to it. I'm also pretty much at the end of needing further PT attention. I never had any problem with my appointments. read more

I've received PT for 17 years and have been in regular pain for 6 years. I've never received PT like at Active Marin...really caring, thoughtful, helpful, with great referrals that resulted in both identifying a serious (thought treatable) physical problem that resulted in better treatment and pain free for the first time. Their experience and sophistication took it levels above the 'cookie cutter' approaches I experienced for years without much help. Cynthia Rose Koch expertly guided me through rehab for two knee replacements and had me back out hiking on my beloved trails of Mt. Tamalpais in record time. She is incredibly knowledgeable about the mechanics of the human body and knows how hard to push you 'just enough' so that you rehab from surgery at the optimum pace. After enduring several years of osteoarthritis that severely limited my ability to walk, my surgeon provided me with new knees and Cynthia showed me the way to retrain my legs and feet on how to walk normally again, how to strengthen my muscles, and how to ensure that my different body parts were working together in harmony. I am so grateful for the help from Hanna at Active Marin in helping me recover after a trail running injury had caused persistent knee pain for months and wasn't improving. She was very thorough in her analysis of the issue and put together an easy to follow training plan that started immediately helping. Love Hannah my physical therapist, she's very patient and caring, obviously knows what she's doing. She's really helped me with my lower back and wrist that resulted from a recent car accident. I cannot say enough great things about the team at Active Marin. The front desk staff is friendly and professional and the PTs there are extremely knowledgeable. I was lucky enough to work with the owner Cindy and PT extraordinaire David. I came to see them after less then stellar results with another PT group (six months after surgery to repair my Achilles tendon). They gave me a full assessment and because of their experience and expertise were able to uncover some issues that were impairing my recovery. I am so glad I worked with Active Marin. While I'm still in recovery, I'd like to write a note about how amazing Laura is. I have a complicated pelvic issue which has progressed through my pregnancy and post delivery. Laura provided me some critical mobility alternatives during my pregnancy which really made a huge difference in my pain. Post delivery, I've seen Laura 1-2x a week and am slowly seeing improvements. Laura is extremely competent, provides me with education on my situation, what to expect with progress, and is incredibly patient and reassuring. She is warm, empathetic, and also pushes me. I recently visited Active Marin for a pinched nerve in my hip. Kelly, the therapist who treated me was fantastic. She listened to me and gave me all sorts of exercises to do. I am happy to say I am pain free! I've been to a lot of physical therapy clinics in or near San Francisco over the years, but I really liked this place. It's a great location with easy parking, and a friendly welcoming staff. All of the therapists seem really knowledgeable and have their own area of expertise. Go here, do the work, get better. I've gone to Active Marin for a few issues over the years, but recovery from a broken pelvis in March required a lot of skill and work. Cindy had incredible ability to observe and know what needed work when. The ongoing PT program helped me re-develop flexibility and strength as I recovered from crutches to walking to riding and finally back to running the trails. I am a very active person and started having knee pain. I went to Active Marin PT thinking physical therapy might help. I was very impressed! Cindy took video of me running on a treadmill to look at my technique and was able to determine a muscle imbalance that was the cause of my knee pain. Avoid coming here at all costs!!! While the employees are great the shrewd owner of this company, Cindy, is a horrid business woman. She will bump a post-surgical Medicare or blue shield patient off her schedule to make room for a self pay patient simply because they pay more than Medicare. And even if you get an appointment on the books, Medicare patients wait 2x longer then self pay patients! She also seems to have a constant revolving door of employees (RED FLAG!) Active Marin has been a lifesaver for me. Referred by my orthopedic doctor, I found Jenni Someillan, PT to be a thoughtful and skilled therapist in helping to unlock my seriously "stuck" pelvis. The pain in my right glute was very severe and Jenni led me through some stretches to do at home. Returning 2 days later she did some resistance moves that gave me almost instant pelvic movement. More stretching at home, the next appointment and some traction in a table this morning, I have even more relief! Outstanding! I have worked with many physios over the years, but the team at Active Marin were one of the best. Hannah and Laura worked for 4 weeks with my 15 year old son who was recovering from a soccer knee injury. They were "firm but fair" with him with regards to his return to play protocols (much needed!), really "knew their stuff", and got him rehabbed on time as forecast. Having raced Mt bikes for many years and continue to live a very active lifestyle still riding Mt and road bikes as well as surfing and stand up paddle hiking ect.. I came in needing PT for tendonosis in my elbow and a slap tear in my shoulder. Their staff was very friendly, competent, and welcoming. There is ample parking at the location, and the facility was clean and efficiently organized. There is plenty of room for mobility work as well as a good layout for an appropriate level of discretion. Even when they are busy, they try as hard as possible to work with your schedule. The staff are very good with contacting you if you are on the waiting list for an earlier appointment. Seena was very knowledgeable, considerate, and a great listener. I signed up with AMPT after having shoulder surgery for labral repair at the end of December 2015. I blindly scheduled sessions with Megan, because her schedule allowed for visits after 6 PM, which is the only time that worked with my schedule. My experience with Megan and Active Marin Physical Therapy could not have been better. Do not be fooled by Megan's youthful spirit and energy - she has plenty of experience in both inpatient and outpatient settings, as well as a number of patients who used my same surgeon for their orthopedic maladies. Her hands on approach and carefully documented physical exam performed during each visit gave me confidence that my shoulder was healing appropriately. She was very patient with my numerous anxieties related to my rehabilitation and did not brush over any of my concerns. Being an MD myself, I appreciated Megan's evidence- and data- based approach to my treatment, but it was her personalized approach to my care which made her an excellent therapist. I was quite active and strong before my surgery, and Megan tailored my weekly rehabilitation goals to my specific abilities rather than a standard print out for the average person in my situation. I am now almost 6 months out from my shoulder surgery and couldn't be happier with my progress. So I thought I would write an update since I wrote my last review: I continue to use Cindy and her crew as an integral part of my physical well-being. This time my back went out-like totally out. Picking up laundry off the floor, no less. This time I had to bag the half marathon and get some real help. Cindy and her staff have done a great job getting me back on my feet and running again! I went to Cindy because I was looking for a PT in Mill Valley so I could avoid going to the city and being away from my business. I had a really bad rotator cuff tear from a motorcycle accident that was repaired 5 months ago. After finishing my PT at another place in the city my shoulder developed a really bad impingement and I was in a lot of pain again. Cindy did a very thorough examination and spotted many issues that my other PT did not. With the help a few exercises she added to my rehab program my impingement is going away and my shoulder is feeling much better. Cindy is an amazing specialist.
