There's a reason that The Knee Joint has won the Best Of Marin physical therapy for the past 3 years running. Danielle Sartori worked wonders with my torn meniscus. The first orthopedic surgeon wanted to operate immediately without ever mentioning physical therapy. A huge red flag! So I got a second opinion and that Dr suggested PT. After vetting half a dozen physical therapists, I felt so fortunate to have landed on The Knee Joint. Danielle put together an exercise program to stabilize and strengthen my knee. I have emerged from a hobbling, limping-in-pain, never- dancing-again sad person, to a walking-hiking-biking and flying-up stairs-with-no-pain-happy person doing the jig! I have to admit I was a bit skeptical, but after sticking to her program for 7-8 weeks, I was pain-free. I know I need to adhere to her exercise program on my own, to maintain. I've been working with Dr Danielle Sartori at The Knee Joint for almost 9 months as I rehab a serious knee injury. From the beginning, she has been focused on individualizing my treatment plan to help me return to trail running and surfing (and my other activities). She offers no-nonsense guidance and tough love when needed, but that doesn't mean we haven't laughed a lot in our sessions! The Knee Joint has an on-site gym that is available for patients to use during office hours. Having all of the gym equipment available removes a lot of the barriers to sticking to the long-term treatment needed to fully heal. I feel obligated to disclose their unethical business practice when using accepted insurance. Normally one would pay their copay for an assessment and for approved therapy sessions. When I called to set up initial appt. and asked what our obligation was, the answer was only copay. As we were leaving the initial appt., Danielle presented us with a contract to sign that would obligate us to pay an additional $115 out of pocket for that visit and we would have to sign up for a program that we would pay our copay per visit PLUS another $415 out of pocket for 5 more sessions. When I questioned this, she stated "we do things a little different here." I said that this wasn't ethical and left. I worry that some people would feel pressured/duped into signing this "program contract". AVOID, speak with your insurer to know your rights and obligations read more

Quality of actual physical therapy: 4 stars. Reduction due to enforcement of $50 charge for "additional" services: 2 stars. Total: 2 stars. TKJ's unique strategy for client retention approaches insurance fraud. If you don't sign up for their $50 "Membership Fee," your second visit will be your last. That's right: If you want to continue to receive care while covered by your insurance, you must to pay them an additional $50 over your copay. No exceptions. Most of the things they provide for this fee (We bill your insurance company! We check your PT benefits! We give you a free resistance band! Use our gym during business hours!) are services other decent PT companies give you anyway. I could easily afford the payment, but left after my second visit (of admittedly high-quality therapy) to patronize another PT service with no extra fees. I wonder if one of the results of not becoming a Member was that they charged me the "specialist" rate instead of the "office visit" rate, then left it to me to contact my insurance company to confirm. The insurance company confirmed that they mistakenly charged me the higher rate. If I had become a Member and they then checked my benefits, would they have charged me the lower rate? Hmmm. Seems a little like giving the alcoholic the keys to the distillery. I know it's a tough world out there for providers who use insurance, but this policy is out of line. If you're shopping for a a PT company with integrity, I suggest you move along. Today, I ran seven miles on trails and for that I have TKJ and specifically Danielle to thank. I have been swimming for four months and biking for two months, but running a respectable distance was the last part of my recovery I had not achieved until today. Seven months ago to the day, I hobbled into TKJ on crutches having just had surgery three days earlier for a Trimalleolar fracture with dislocation. Basically, I broke my Tibia, Medial Malleus, Lateral Malleus, had multiple breaks of the Fibula including a spiral fracture going up the bone and I tore the ligaments. Basically, that is as bad as it gets. On my first visit, Danielle took the boot and wrapping off my leg and began the long journey of helping me recover. I will never forget that first visit. After an hour with Danielle in which she expertly massaged my foot (note: physical therapy massage is very different - it's goal is to get scar tissue and soft tissue damage out and to rebuild soft tissue capacity and it can hurt) and iced it and here is what is amazing: after one hour, the circumference of my ankle decreased by 2.3 cm. That is a huge reduction in one hour. Over the next few months, the physical therapy transitioned as I began to be able to move my foot and then start reconditioning and strengthening it. Danielle was an awesome coach and physical therapist along the way. She is so good at what she does and she knew when I could change or increase what I was doing to accelerate my recovery safely and smartly. At times she would push me, at times she would hold me back because she knew how to guide my recovery. Danielle (and all the TKJ staff) is also nice and fun to be around. I always enjoyed going in and hearing how she was doing. She also is an athlete and though I am not as athletic as I used to be, I still really liked it that I felt like I was rehabbing with the goal of running again and not just basic use of my leg. After going through this horrific break and rehabilitation, my advice for anyone would be: 1. START EARLY - start physical therapy immediately after surgery if you can as it will help the swelling and recovery. 2. Stay with it - physical therapy is not easy and there were days I felt a lot of pain getting my leg to work again. Don't just do regular visits, but do the home exercise program as well. 3. Do physical therapy with the best. I will for the rest of my life be grateful for the help Danielle provided me in my recovery from such a bad fracture. You will be in good hands at TKJ in their outstanding care and I cannot recommend them highly enough after what they have done for me. My Doctor recommended PT for a rotator cuff I injured a few years ago that was recently aggravated further. I found TKJ through an acquaintance of a relative who is a Physical Therapist in another city and she recommended Morgan at TKJ. I've worked with Morgan primarily but also work with Trina. I highly recommend them both as highly trained professionals. My progress has been amazing. I was having trouble sleeping and even putting on a shirt. My joint was nearly locked up. I had nearly lost the use of it. It's taken a lot of work but, I've gained so much of the use of my shoulder back. It's possible I may avoid surgery in the future to correct this injury. I go 3 days a week and this gives me a chance to see a lot of the goings on. Iv'e watched as they bring child and teen athletes in for for clinics, and or evaluations to avoid or prevent injuries in their competitive sport. They work well with the kids and everyone seems to enjoy working with them. At each appointment I work with a Physical Therapist, and always one on one. I feel I am getting the treatment a professional sports figure would get and it's just me. Leonard is the first person you will meet. Besides always meeting me with a smile he's great at getting me through the paperwork and working me into the schedule. The staff here is first class. While I have had PT before, I just felt like the next client, here I feel like they are eager to help me and happy when I progress. This is the top physical therapy 'joint' I've ever experienced. I recovered nicely from two operations (meniscus, total knee replacement) with their care. Like many, I've had my share of PT over the years. What sets The Knee Joint above is consistent senior professionals, not a 'leveraged' mode of one qualified person and many apprentices. Their communications tools (App, emails, personalized diagrams and instructions) work very well. The facility is convenient. All of the gear top notch. I thought the treatment plans were good at first but was pushed too hard for my situation. My knees became very swollen, especially one, and I thought I was headed to knee surgery. I didn't get great advice from this outfit or my sports doc, until I myself found an orthopedic acupuncturist who diagnosed incredible swelling, and who was able to immediately relieve my symptoms by 80%! At this point, I still have knee pain, but it is easily manageable. If I had not chosen to do this remarkable acupuncture, I might have prematurely gone for knee replacement which was not necessary at all at this time. read more

I have seen Danielle at The Knee Joint for about a year, on and off, for a few different injuries. As a runner and ex-collegiate athlete, I was very skeptical of PT going into this experience. I had only even had physical therapists who aim to get you back to a minimum level of fitness, and not to the highest level. Danielle took the time to get to know my history as an athlete and runner, and to push me to get the most out of my sessions. While it wasn't always fun (those clamshells get me every time), I am now able to run longer and with consistently higher quality than ever (even as a college runner!). Had a great experience with Karyn Papiro at TKJ and strongly recommend her. I've been running for years, but an achilles tendon injury laid me low, and wasn't healing after several months. My doctor referred me to Karyn and TKJ. I'd never done PT before, and was a little wary about what to expect. Karyn was instantly friendly and authoritative, and I felt I was in good hands. After a few weeks of carefully guided exercises, I'm back to running again and feeling confident about the future. Karyn knows her stuff, and she communicates in a friendly and cheery way, making the whole process feel more like fun than work. I've been a heavy user at TKJ sports for several years and have nothing but good things to say about them. They are great all-around physical therapists and have a sound knowledge base and fantastic system to get you healthy again. I've seen them for rehab from major shoulder problems and a major surgery rehab, ACL rupture pre-hab and surgery rehab, and my son saw them for a broken wrist surgery rehab. Danielle is particularly great. I like that I have a consistent knowledgeable therapist (unlike other shops) and I like the email delivered PT program for reference. After 4 years of knee pain, I decided to stop complaining or accepting limitations and actually do something about it. I have been very impressed with The Knee Joint - from the initial thorough assessment to the progression of challenging exercises over the past 3 months, Danielle and Rebecca at TKJ offer excellent physical therapy services. I hadn't met my insurance deductible when I began treatment but I'm so glad I didn't let this dissuade me from getting the help I needed. The phone app with videos of the specific exercises and personalized descriptions has really kept me on track. I've been consistent with my homework and appointments and it has truly paid off. I am able to hike downhill again with almost no knee pain and I'm no longer afraid to do squats and stairs. My success is a result of their clear instruction which led to my understanding of proper alignment and which muscles to strengthen and engage to keep me safe. My shoulder pain started around ten years ago during an overly enthusiastic water aerobics class--while the water supports your lower body, it is easy to over-extend your arms--I did that and and my left shoulder never got better. Finally two months ago, I was told the only solution for the constant pain and weakness--now progressed to bone-on-bone arthritis--was shoulder replacement. Having replaced knee #2 just a year and a half ago, not ready for more metal in-body, I opted for quarterly cortisone injections and a program of physical therapy. TKJ Sports was right there next to my doctor's office. My goals were modest--to build strength and regain flexibility so I could go back to the gym and exercise "normally," without extreme pain and without causing further deterioration. At my first session, Doctor Danielle Sartori did some testing. Everything hurt. But I immediately felt that she had the kind of "touch"--firm and confident--that let me know I could trust her with my pain. She showed me some very simple isometric exercises, and did a bit of physical manipulation. I have been doing the exercises almost daily, progressing to rubber bands and weights over two months. Two weeks ago, I had a cortisone shot, which greatly decreased the pain level and allowed me to do more strenuous exercising. I "graduated" today, after only eight sessions. I am not better--arthritis doesn't go away--but I am much stronger, can scratch my back with my left hand (albeit just the lower half), do not want to scream with pain when I first get up in the morning, can reach for something on a shelf with my left hand without wincing, and now know what to do to keep progressing and getting stronger while maintaining functional flexibility. I thank Danielle and her facility and can recommend them with five stars.
