The entire surgical experience at his partnership's Marin Specialty Surgery Center was top notch.

While Dr Kim's academic achievements are impressive, his communication skills are woefully lacking…read more By that I mean he did not communicate basic information about a procedure until AFTER he performed it on me. I was scheduled for a consultation regarding a cyst in my wrist. Going into it, I knew I preferred draining the cyst, as opposed to cutting it out, and anticipated discussing this option. Instead, he went and got the supplies necessary to drain the cyst right then. It seemed silly to object and insist on scheduling a future appointment to do something he was ready to do during the current appointment, so I agreed. After he drained the cyst, he told me there would be some swelling because he'd injected it with cortisone. That was all he said. I had to ask if there were any restrictions on using my wrist, to which he responded that I should wear a wrist brace - for a MONTH. That is the kind of thing a patient needs to know AHEAD OF TIME. Luckily I had a wist brace at home, because that was not provided. I was surprised to discover I was unable to move or use my fingers the entire day because even the slightest movement of the fingers was very painful. That night when I took the brace off to change into my pajamas, my entire wrist was discolored from bruising. Dr. Kim did not mention anything about pain in the fingers & wrist, being unable to move the fingers & wrist, or bruising. I have no idea if those are normal consequences of the procedure, or if they are a sign that something is amiss. Dr. Kim acted as if this was similar to having blood drawn; they stick the needle in, it's uncomfortable for a moment, and then you go on your merry way. If I had known I would not be able to use my hand for a month, I would have scheduled the procedure accordingly. For example, after the huge project I need to complete in the coming weeks. Now I have a firm deadline approaching and I can't use one of my hands! This is a big problem for me. I also would have communicated whether or not I would permit him to inject my wrist with cortisone. Dr. Kim made no mention of risks or possible complications. It feels violating to have a Dr. mislead you about a procedure.

Pretty annoyed with this hand surgeon. Came in he tried to pop a cyst. Said he did. I told him it's…read morenot. Said give it 2 weeks. I did. Ended up not doing anything. Got an expensive bill. Said come back in we'll do it again and bill you again. Then he referred me to this other dr. Drove 3 hours to see dr. waited an hour to be seen. Dr said you're too young to be here. 3 minutes later I was out with another expensive bill. Fun Fun...

This is a repeat of a review I just put on Google (for those looking at both sources): I was…read morereferred to Dr. Alfrey for surgery recently (March 2026). The preop appointment was fine and answered my questions around what the procedure would consist of. My day at Marin Health started well with great preop care by the nursing team. I think the surgery went well, though I had to deduce this on my own as everything after the surgery, in terms of communication by the surgeon, his care team, or the Marin Health staff was inconsistent or absent. This includes no post op conversation with anyone at all, no response to any MyChart messages asking if the surgery went well and if the tumor was removed as expected, and no wound check until 12 days postop - which is surprising given the size of the incision, surgical staples and tension sutures that were utilized. I was unable to reach the surgeon or his staff when the wound site worsened at day 6, and when I finally did reach them (after repeated calls that were not returned), they simply said "Go to the ER if you are concerned." I did that, and the ER staff were great - and also surprised to see that there had been no wound check scheduled. It turned out the wound needed additional care and they provided it. When I saw Dr. Alfrey at the 12 day mark, he shared no information about my surgery, seemed completely disassociated from my actually being present in the exam room (he was teaching a PA), and was monosyllabic in answer to my questions. I hear he is good technically in surgery, so that's something. His patient communication skills are subpar and in no way could I recommend him to anyone I care about. I truly hope this is an outlier experience. I have been a long time supporter of Marin Health but will do a good bit more research before scheduling with them for anything future - it's not worth it to risk that kind of experience. My letter last week to the hospital leadership about the above went unanswered, which leads me to posting this review online so that others are aware.

It's taken over 15 years for someone just to diagnose me . To then be sent to him. He spent less than 5 mins. with me. 1 minute Listening 2 minutes of explaining what my problem is. Very arrogant man. I don't even want to give him one star.
