I found the kayak I wanted on WestMarine.com, and purchased two of them for delivery to the store. My boats arrived early, and the associate called to let me know they were in. When I arrived at the store, the clerk directed me to the back counter to gather the order paperwork, and the fellow back there walked me to the front where I paid. Same fellow helped me roll the kayaks to the truck and help me load them. Solid and straightforward service. And I even like the color.

Hearing employees openly joke and talk about being intoxicated while working behind a firearm counter immediately raised serious concerns for me. Firearms require a high level of responsibility, awareness, and professionalism, and hearing staff casually discuss drinking while actively assisting customers was alarming. What made it worse was how loud and proud the conversation was. They were laughing and hyping each other up about drinking while customers were standing right in front of them. Whether they were joking or not, it reflects extremely poor judgment and creates a very bad look for a business that sells and handles firearms. It gives the impression that safety and professionalism are not being taken seriously. In an environment where safety should be the absolute priority, hearing employees casually talk and laugh about drinking while surrounded by firearms is incredibly concerning and completely unprofessional.

When it was finally my turn, the employee refused to even run the California ammo eligibility check on my driver's license. The reason? My license shows my city as "Rancho Cucamo" instead of spelling out "Rancho Cucamonga." This is a standard DMV abbreviation because the full city name is too long to fit on the license. Instead of simply running the check and letting the system decide, the employee said he didn't want to process it because the city wasn't spelled out fully. Waiting that long just to be turned away for something printed by the DMV was extremely frustrating. I understand stores have to follow California laws, but refusing to even try the check after a two-hour wait felt unprofessional and like a waste of a customer's time. Hopefully Bass Pro Shop improves training and customer service at the ammo counter so others don't have to deal with the same experience.
