My dog had such a great time here! A little backstory. My Olde English bulldog had ACL and patella surgery almost four weeks ago. He isn't putting much weight on the leg yet and it still can be tender. PPC scheduled a google conference call with me ($5 to avoid no shows) to get details on what he needs during a groom. I spoke with Melissa and let her know my concerns about putting weight on and to stress that the groomer needs to be gentle with his leg. She assured me everything will go at my dog' pace and even let me check him in at the front door as stairs can be difficult still. I went ahead and booked the appointment, and am so happy I did. Drop off was very easy and convenient for me to drop off early morning and go back home to take meetings. I picked up my dog a few hours later. He was clean, smelled great and was so happy! I received his report card later that evening and was pleasantly surprised to see how detailed it was and that 4 wonderful people were involved with the grooming. Especially thankful for the time it took to sand his toes on his bum leg!! My dog had such a great time there he was worn out the rest of the day. I know he can't wait to go back! We've been having a tough time cutting our shy puppy's nails. She's very timid and doesn't love her nails trimmed, but we sent her to Patrick's and she was clearly treated well and with care and was so happy. The groomer welcomed the info., was careful to treat our pup very gently & to slowly introduce her to others in the room so she'd know her surroundings. When we picked up our pup she was calm & reportedly had a pleasant visit with her groomer & other staff. And, bonus, she received an excellent puppy cut. At the beginning, they were great! They emailed me back right away with breakdowns of prices, and even followed up with a phone call. I asked to book for Monday the 17th and they sent me a follow up email, confirming the appointment. I arrived around 12:35 (drop-off is between 12:30 PM - 1:00 PM). When I arrived, a sign on the door said to go to the alley for afternoon drop-offs (this was not mentioned in the emails or phone call/text). I went to the alley and waited a few minutes after ringing the bell. When I went in, a young woman was physically present to check me in, and some person was on an iPad with 2 way camera on so they could see me/I could see them (super weird). They had no record of my dog being booked. After some back and forth, I read the email to them, and the person on the intercom/iPad thing said he forgot to actually "confirm" the appointment. The email said: "We would love to welcome [dog] at the salon! Yes, you can bring [dog] at 12:30 PM. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask." Apparently, this did not count as a confirmation which... okay. So they were able to squeeze me in with the bather so I said okay, fine, let's just do it. The woman then tells me to be back at 2:00 - 2:15 PM. The pick-up hours on the phone, website, and email all say, "Afternoon appointments (only available for Basics service): Drop-off: 12:30-01:00PM Pick-up: 03:00-04:00PM." The woman said oh, well we're not that busy today so we won't be open after 2:30 PM. Bizarre. I was like, well, I made this appointment here cause I liked the services you offered, and it worked with my schedule. I live 20+ minutes away, so I'd have to immediately turn back to come and pick her up. Too bad for me. So I had to call out of two dog walks (I am a professional dog walker) in order to come back to get her in time. I left around 12:50 PM. I get a text: "[dog] was checked in for Basics (Bath + Nails) for Adult Dogs at Monday, 6/17/2024 1:23 pm." How are they possibly going to do all of the bath and other things in 37 minutes? Spoiler alert: they did not finish by 2:00 PM. I arrived at 2:00 PM. I parked on the street because the alley is really tight. I called at 2:20 PM and asked for a time update. They said oh, she still has to do some things so another 20 minutes. This is pushing 2:45 PM now. At 2:47 PM, I get a text saying, "Hi [ ]! Hope you are doing well. May we have an ETA for [dog] please?" I was extremely confused, so I told them I had been waiting for almost an hour. I came in and the groomer checked me out. A new person was on the intercom and said they tried to bring my dog out to me but I wasn't there. I said well, I have been parked on the street for 54 minutes, and I even called 25 minutes before you texted me and you still didn't properly notify me. They provided me a free "add-on" of shed control ($18.00) as an apology,, which I accepted. Now, this is where I admit fault: I was really mad because my dog looked exactly the same when I came out. I didn't realize the basics didn't cover a trim of even sanitary areas, so that's on me. I won't fault them for that. But I can get the entire services they offer under basics plus trim and de-shed, nails, etc. for $30.00 - $40.00 cheaper at two other salons I called so I definitely would have gone elsewhere had I realized. I added a star (2 stars) because I misread the basics. I also tipped the groomer because this was not her fault. My dog is still shedding a ton - last place I went she stopped shedding in the summer for about a week when doing a big de-shed treatment. I am really glad I did not pay for this. I also paid extra for nails and my dog's nails were cracked and breaking when we got back. My partner had to re-trim them this morning. They also promised to have a full report card in print and verbally to explain how she acted, which I thought was great. The bather said, "she was really good, she was nervous at first, but she took a lot of pepperoni." I was expecting more. Today (day after the appointment) I got an email with a report card that they "forgot" to give it at the end of the appointment/verbally explain it to me. I do not recommend Patrick's Pet Care. read more

I am an older adult. I have a new rescue dog. Don't have a computer but have heard good things about this place. Was in the neighborhood and decided to inquire about the services. The door was locked,so I called to see if someone could let me in. Someone answered after the 3rd time. He came to the door and put his foot there so couldn't enter. We've been taking our now 10 month old rescue puppy Wheeler to the Brookland location for their Montessori school 1-2x per week since late December. The structured day including play, set down times and various training activities and games are so good for her. She loves her pals there! The staff is super friendly and courteous and very thoughtful in their detailed report cards you receive each visit. They've helped work with our pup on her socialization issues and learning to self-regulate. She's a work in progress! We are super thankful to have found Patrick's. And so is Wheeler. Honestly baffled by all the good reviews. I'm giving 2 stars instead of 1 because my dog came home happy both times and the grooming was fine, but this place's process is honestly infuriating. Their grooms take FOREVER (like 7-8 hours), they have absolutely no communication with you throughout the day, and when you try to contact them to check the status, good luck getting through that phone menu and getting someone on the phone. Once, they claimed they texted us that our dog was ready, but we never received that text and they were totally unconcerned - so our dog sat there for an extra 3 hours while we tried to reach them to see if he was ready for pickup. This time, they said they'd contact us by 11am with a status update, and we never heard anything until we texted and called a bunch at 3pm. It's just generally a mess. On top of all that, they are CRAZY expensive. Like at least $50 more than other groomers in the area. We'll be looking for another spot for our dog. read more

I can't speak more highly of PPC. I adopted a rescue puppy, Opie, a little over a year ago. PPC has been there every step of the way--from puppy daycare to the facility in Brookland. They've worked with her patiently and with an abundance of love, even as she went through difficult behavioral times. Most importantly, Opie loves them! Ashley, her walker, has been the best part of Opie's day during covid; Opie gets so excited she'll whack her tail on the wall from wagging. She loves the daycare team and enrichment they provide. Especially since she's a high-energy dog, I've appreciated how much PPC has worked with me and Opie so that she can have a great time and not get over-stimulated. I also love peeking in on the webcam during the day to see what mischief she gets into. The daycare transportation team has also been amazing. Opie LOVES cars and adventures. I credit her positive association with cars and her good car manners to the transpo team, who drove her around 3x a week for months. Last shoutout--I've also used PPC for overnight sitting when I've been on trips, since I have two cats & Opie. I've had really great experiences each time. When I come back, Opie is if anything better behaved than when I left her. From watching their work with Opie, I can tell they are committed to a positive, force- and fear-free, nurturing environment. I trust PPC wholeheartedly with my pets. The team is responsive, enthusiastic--and most importantly, they treat their animal charges with love and individualized care. read more

My dog gets so excited and exuberant when we pull up to PPC; I see a marked change in his disposition. I always trust that he's going to have fun with his furry pals in an enriching environment. They say good service is hard to find, and I'm so happy I don't need to look further than PPC for daycare. However, to call it daycare feels inadequate. My dog is in the "Dog Montessori School," and I have seen such a positive difference in his behavior. He's a puppy bursting with energy, and they've been training him to be more patient and less snippy, which has made both of our lives more enjoyable as we work together on his manners. I like that he's getting to have fun playing and hanging with the other dogs, but also that they are providing mental stimulation to exercise their brains as well. It's very hard to return to the single room concrete slab daycare concept when PPC brings so much joy to the dogs through engaging activities. As a perk, you get webcams to check-in on the play (I love watching during my lunch hour), and detailed video report cards and pictures to see all the joy that was had. I especially love the detailed video report cards because the trainers discuss the enrichment group activities and 1-on-1 training they did with your dog, which I've used to continue the training on my own. It's not close to me, but I make the trek to get him to PPC because it's more than worth it. I'm even considering moving to the Brookland neighborhood to be closer to it (crazy, right?) - that's how good they are. Delighted to support this inclusive local gem of a company. read more

We highly recommend Ian as a personal dog trainer. Ian came to our house to work with our puppy, an energetic and smart corgi. He was very prompt and organized for each lesson and sent us weekly homework and instructions on topics we covered in our session. Ian has a great demeanor, and our dog really enjoyed his lessons. He is a keen observer of your dog's individual personality (as well as how owners are absorbing the lessons--since we were in training too), and he was always willing to deviate from the lesson plan to address additional issues on our mind. I found Patrick's Pet Care because I was searching for a positive reinforcement only trainer to help me and my wife with our two very anxious, and reactive dogs. Our experiences in the past with trainers who would rely on negative enforcement or positive punishment methods left us feeling hopeless for being able to manage unwanted behaviors. It was therefore very important that we found someone to stayed away from fear-based methods. PPC takes very seriously their "fear-free, force-free" position. We have been working with Joe Ryan for the last six months on counter-conditioning and desensitization for unwanted behaviors that our dogs exhibited. Never once we were instructed to do something that would scare our beloved dogs (I.e no e-collars, no choke collars, no yelling). Everything we have learned from Joe is based on positive reinforcement foundations. Joe is patient, polite, knowledgeable, and truly interested in helping. Since working with Joe at PPC, we have gone from a sense of hopelessness to experiencing successes in managing our dogs' undesirable (and sometimes violent towards each other) behaviors. There is no instant cure for for long term behavioral change, and we have to be consistent with practicing what we are taught, but there finally seems like there is a light at the end of this tunnel. If you get the opportunity to work with Joe Ryan, you can rest assured that you will have someone who truly cares about your companion's welfare. Working to improve the lives of dogs is not just a job for him, it is something that he truly cares about. read more

I've been sending my border collie, Cooper, to Patrick's since they opened in Brookland three years ago. Cooper loves his pals at Patrick's and so do I--they have such thoughtful, detailed report cards and you can tell they genuinely care about about the pups. I've also been pleased to see the new activities and training they've added since reopening following COVID-19. While it's not cheap, it is definitely super high quality service (in fact, I'd say it's the best). I'm especially impressed that they provided fear free training for all of their staff, which is important for my dog, who has fear and anxiety issues. As you can see from the photo, that's not a problem when he's with his friends at daycare! We've used their walking and boarding services as well, which have been great experience as well. Excellent service, flexible, and very convenient. The staff is very friendly and clearly cares about the dogs. We have used them twice for our dog, who is not the most social dog, and Patrick's took excellent care of him. They took him on regular walks, allowed him to have human time when the puppies were getting too much for him, and provided us with regular reports on his day. Prices were very reasonable, we had the peace of mind to know that our dog was in great hands, and we also had the ability to check-in on him through their webcams. We brought our 12 week old puppy in yesterday for his first grooming appointment. People who work there are the sweetest! They were very communicative when i scheduled an appointment via email. My dog Roger has been going to Patrick's Brooklands location for daycare every week day for a year and we couldn't be happier. I've also had Roger groomed at Patrick's and had him boarded there when I went out of town, and had great experiences with both. The staff at Patrick's are responsive, professional, and take amazing care of my dog Roger, all at very reasonable prices. I get alerts when he's picked up and dropped off, as well as a daily update with a picture. The best part is that Roger loves going to Patrick's - he is so happy to see Alex and the Pet Force 1 van every morning and always eager to go! Patrick's is the absolute best!!! Our crazy lab pup has been going 1-2x / week for awhile now and he comes home happy and exhausted every time. And WOW did they really step up their game following their reopening after they closed due to COVID. I can tell they really work with him on some behavioral training, and they always provide such detailed reports on his day along with pictures! They offer lots of enrichment activities, it's definitely not just a place where he romps in a concrete room with pups of all types and barely monitored. They really customize his day and it's nice too to see familiar people all the time when we drop him off / pick him up. Melissa is an absolute gem!! Unfortunately we moved to the suburbs so we likely won't be using Patrick's as much going forward, but Dawson is going to miss them so much! I think they raised their prices quite a bit too, but if you can afford it, it is definitely worthwhile as I think they have so much more to offer than your standard daycare!! read more

My wife and I decided to give the new Patrick's Petcare on 12th St NE a try so that our 8-month-old puppy could socialize with other dogs and break up the monotony of being home with the dog walker during the week. We dropped him off at 8:30 AM for his first day and got an update around 12:30 PM that things were going well. However, when we came to pick him up at 5 PM, the person working had no idea who he was or where he might be! I had to show him a picture of our dog, and then he had to call the person who had worked the morning shift to find out where our puppy was as we waited for several minutes in a panic thinking he was lost. The guy said he arrived for work 1 PM and hadn't seen our dog the whole time he had been there. He even gestured to the daycare area and said "well this is the daycare" incredulously noting my dog's absense, as though we were crazy for believing my dog should be there. Apparently our puppy had been in the back somewhere since the morning worker gave him lunch at noon. This leads me to believe that not only was our dog locked away in the back of the store for most of the day without any supervision or care, but he also hadn't been given a chance to relieve himself since the morning walk at 10 AM considering the guy working didn't know he existed until we came in. The guy did not seem concerned at all about what had happened and only offered up a noticeably forced apology after we said we would not be returning. There were no managers on site and nobody has returned our emails or phone calls. read more

It's really important to Patrick that his staff are compensated well and treated fairly. And the care Patrick takes with his staff translates directly into better care for our pups. I feel like I'm constantly running into team members who break into a huge grin at the sight of our pups -- even years after their last interaction with my dogs (and of course my dogs go nuts with excitement as they recognize their old walking buddies). We have been using Patrick's team for extra exercise on my long work days for years, but we decided to try the day care this past fall because we had a young puppy we didn't want cooped up in a crate all day. All three of our pups enjoy their time playing with Adrianna, Jerneice, and the rest of the pack in Brookland and they come home exhausted -- which makes my high energy dogs suddenly wonderful home office mates for several days after each visit to day care. Our puppy Harper is now old enough to be left loose when we aren't there to supervise, but we still try to get the pups to Patrick's a few days per week so they can romp and play with their friends and come home ready to snooze while I'm working. We love the daily email updates and photos; my kids and husband love being able to check in and see how the pups are doing on the web cam from school and work; and I love that Adrianna and Jerneice show genuine affection and care for our favorite family members. read more

Our dog, Theo, has been going to Patrick's for the past three months for daycare 101, which is for dogs that need some help before starting regular daycare. Our dog has been a little scared of other dogs, and never really learned how to play with dogs (hes a rescue). This was exacerbated because we got him during COVID as a one year old, so he already passed the puppy socialization stage when we got him. I was having trouble finding an option to help socialize him as an adult, but Patrick's was the perfect fit. Patrick's has eased him into other pups so nicely, and he's been making great strides. They don't force crating (which freaks my dog out) and they let him lead the pace that he needs to go. Joe and everyone else there is so nice and good with the animals. We've been using Patrick's Pet Care periodically since they opened their Brookland location as a socialization opportunity for our rescue pup, Biscuit. On her first day at Patrick's, Biscuit was so scared she had to be carried through the door. Now, she loves it so much she drags you down 12th Street when she realizes where she's going! She loves spending time with Adrianna & Jerniece, and always comes home happy and exhausted. We've used the on-demand daycare and boarding services and have had great, attentive, caring service every single time. We've never felt like the facility was overcrowded or that our dog (or those with her) weren't being paid attention to. The one time we've had an issue, both Patrick and Dominic were quick to respond and assist. The daily updates and option to check in via video are great too. I can't say enough good things about PPC. When I adopted my dog I knew within a few weeks that he had issues with dog reactivity and I would need to address this asap living in the city. From my first consult with PPC I felt like we had a plan and the tools to work on these issues immediately. I worked with Ian for 10 sessions and feel like not only did my dog learn a lot, but I gained the skills to continue with his training on my own! My dog has also attended enrichment 1:1 classes and his social skills with other dogs and people have noticeably improved! It has been wonderful seeing his confidence and excitement and thrill to learn be encouraged in these classes with Ian and Joe and Dakota and Nikita and all of the others at PPC! Now that I am returning to work, my pup will be going on training walks with Dakota and I feel like I am truly leaving him in great hands. The worst thing about Patrick's is Patrick himself. He is arrogant, rude, and entirely insincere. He should delegate customer service to someone with actual people skills, who doesn't respond to customer complaints with defensiveness, condescension, and superiority. In an email exchange about confusion over pricing schemes, Patrick literally asserted that because he has been running the business for eight years, there was nothing wrong with his business approach. At least one thing is wrong: you treat your customers like trash, Patrick. In addition to this, over the live stream, I watched one day care attendant drag my dog out of the play area by his head, through a group of dogs and over his panicked protests. When they came back with his leash, he responded fine - why wasn't that the first instinct? When I sent Patrick a note about it, he responded that everyone was still "getting to know each other." I'm not sure any animal care services should feature force as a getting-to-know-you technique. I thought maybe this was an isolated incident for my poor dog, but the same attendant did the same thing to another, larger dog within minutes. The only reason I was watching so closely is that Patrick had dropped me a note that my dog was hesitant to go on his mid day walk the day before - I wonder why. I also opted to try out the drop-off service offered by this company. I made simple requests that my dog get a frozen peanut butter bone I prepared for him, his water refilled, and a light turned on for him. I stressed to Patrick that these things would help my dog with the transition (he has separation anxiety) and yet not a single one of these requests were met on the first try. My dog was terrified, literally shaking, when I got home. I honestly wouldn't recommend Patrick's to anyone. After researching and trying a number of other DC-area doggie day care providers, we landed at Patrick's Brookland location 2 years ago -- and have not looked back. Our 2 1/2 year old labradoodle, Jack, has been going to Patrick's since he was 5 months old -- so it has become his second home. Having recently adopted a dog, my husband and I knew we would need training and a place to drop our dog off for daycare and/or for overnight occasions. So happy that Patrick's Pet Care opened up in Brookland! We purchased a training package immediately and were synced up with Christopher. He was on time, very personable and well tuned to what our dog needed. The training sessions were very informative and well paced. Christopher was very responsive to our questions over email, checking in with us to see how our "homework" was progressing before the next session. He even suggested we stop by their facility with our dog Teddy to see how his socialization skills were with the other dogs. Teddy definitely benefited from the training as he is such a well behaved and well adjusted pup. Patrick's Pet Care is clean, the staff seem to enjoy their job and they are very attentive. We scheduled our dog for on demand day care at the Brookland facility on a Monday when we had a last minute issue pop up on a Sunday afternoon that required us to have him out of our house for a bit while we were at work. We scheduled online and then I called to confirm that the last minute addition would be ok. The individual on the phone confirmed our dog was all set. Then on Monday morning 20 minutes before we are scheduled to drop our dog off I get an email that the facility is closed. This leaves me without enough time to get him to the other facility they have or find other arrangements. We had boarded and done training with Patrick's before but are unlikely to use their services again given the completely avoidable situation they placed us in. read more

I took my 7 yo jack russell to Patrick's because she is a rescue that is sometimes apprehensive and I'd never had her groomed in the year + since i was blessed with her. They were so patient with both of us (I was more nervous than my dog) and they did a great job, even applying best practices for her broken coat. I was able to watch most of the grooming on FaceTime, which alleviated my fears, and their gentle approach kept her very calm. We adopted our wonderful pup in October and it was clear he needed more socialization then we could provide for him safely. Patrick's provides him with structured play time and has helped us work on a few problem behaviors with him too. He was so afraid of his crate and any crate when we got him, but now will sleep in the crate throughout the night and is not afraid to be in the crate during the day. What I love the most about Patrick's are the report cards we get. Joe leaves us wonderful messages and it's clear he loves this dog as much as we do! We were so lucky to find Patrick's Pet Care! We recently brought home a Golden Retriever puppy who is awesome in many ways but has a resource guarding issue. We were working with trainers in Maryland based on a referral (they are also great), but our puppy contracted Giardia, so we had to pull him out of the group classes in which we'd enrolled him. Knowing that it was really important to keep working with and socializing him, we looked for trainers closer to home and found Patrick's. The fear-free, force-free philosophy was really key for us, and they have some great training programs. We've worked with Nikita (for general puppy training), Joe (for resource guarding), Atlee and Dakota (for introductions to enrichment walks), and we have been impressed each time. They are all patient, thoughtful, and go above and beyond. Not to mention our little guy has loved his time with each trainer, and is always such a happy, calm pup after these appointments. Omg, there are so many positive words I can say about Patrick's Pet Care. The staff is kind, caring, professional, informative, and attentive to Bucky, my dog, and my needs. More importantly, my dog loves to attend and play with his newfound doggy friends. I love that I can check-in on him via cameras and the daily report card that is given after his day.
