    Valentine's Day focus!
    Heather H.

We've been taking our now 10 month old rescue puppy Wheeler to the Brookland location for their Montessori school 1-2x per week since late December. The structured day including play, set down times and various training activities and games are so good for her. She loves her pals there! The staff is super friendly and courteous and very thoughtful in their detailed report cards you receive each visit. They've helped work with our pup on her socialization issues and learning to self-regulate. She's a work in progress! We are super thankful to have found Patrick's. And so is Wheeler. She is always super wiggly and all wags when Melissa comes out to get her at dropoff!

We highly recommend Ian as a personal dog trainer. Ian came to our house to work with our puppy, an energetic and smart corgi. He was very prompt and organized for each lesson and sent us weekly homework and instructions on topics we covered in our session. Ian has a great demeanor, and our dog really enjoyed his lessons. He is a keen observer of your dog's individual personality (as well as how owners are absorbing the lessons--since we were in training too), and he was always willing to deviate from the lesson plan to address additional issues on our mind. Nessie is so proud of himself when he does a good job!

We go to Patrick's for grooming, and it's absolutely worth every penny. Jerniece, Rebeca, Andrew, and Mea always take such good care of our sweet girl, and we love the thoughtful report cards. It's so nice to have peace of mind knowing that Lola will be taken care of and given the patience she deserves. She always ends up with a great groom, especially considering her fur isn't the easiest to work with. Thank you, PPC!

I've been sending my border collie, Cooper, to Patrick's since they opened in Brookland three years ago. Cooper loves his pals at Patrick's and so do I--they have such thoughtful, detailed report cards and you can tell they genuinely care about about the pups. I've also been pleased to see the new activities and training they've added since reopening following COVID-19. While it's not cheap, it is definitely super high quality service (in fact, I'd say it's the best). I'm especially impressed that they provided fear free training for all of their staff, which is important for my dog, who has fear and anxiety issues. As you can see from the photo, that's not a problem when he's with his friends at daycare! We've used their walking and boarding services as well, which have been great experience as well. I whole-heartedly recommend this daycare and their team (Adrianna, Melissa, Patrick, and Jerniece are awesome)!!

She's incredibly smart and before finding Atlas she was pretty well behaved but I had sort of hit a wall with her undesirable behavior (barking, separation anxiety, jumping up on people). I knew she needed better instruction than my partner and I were giving her, but knowing how social my dog is, a group puppy class didn't seem ideal. Luckily I met Atlas owner, Danny, and immediately I felt the right vibe. He seemed to have a training approach based in dog psychology, and I knew I was gonna have to think like my very intelligent dog if I was going to effectively communicate with her. I then met with Thomas (who I thoroughly enjoyed on a personal level too!) for only 2 hours and we went over a lot... all sorts of tips and tricks and it helped me to understand the overall philosophy of dog training. I was so busy going over every training mistake i had made, that I didn't even notice that Thomas was efficiently correcting her and my dog began to be on her best behavior... quietly cuddled next to me. Later on that night the change became more apparent when my partner was also like "um did you notice how obedient puppy is being?" We began joking that it's like we brought over a military school recruiter and now she's like "I'll be good! I'll be good!" We're not 100% sure which tip that Thomas gave us was so magical (but I suspect correcting the pack hierarchy was a major point) but it worked! Barking has turned into a low growl or nothing at all, she's stopped pestering us for fetch in favor of waiting for "play time", the results are kinda mind blowing! But the best part I never saw coming. Until seeing the after effects of Thomas I didn't realize how my stressed my puppy was. So now everyone in the house is happier! This is one of those business I love to support! Great people doing great work!

Once I brought the issue to their attention, instead of correcting my account, they tried to assign blame on my card, even though they charged the very same card fourteen weekdays in a row after the alleged problem. In addition, I never received an explanation as to why some days I was charged more than others, for the very same service.  All in all, Atas Doghouse is a convenient, affordable option for doggy daycare, but you will want to be diligent about checking the charges to your credit card frequently.

Presley's first haircut here was fine, shorter than expected on the face but it grew out nicely. This 2nd time we asked for the exact same length, but his face was left noticeably longer. 2 weeks later, his bangs are already covering his eyes. That alone would not have warranted a review, but what happened afterward absolutely does. Presley was dropped off healthy and alert. When my husband picked him up, staff said everything "went fine." But once home, Presley was unsteady on his back legs and refused food, treats, and water. We called City Dogs immediately, and the information we received was inconsistent. On the first call, we were told his nails hadn't been trimmed. On the second, we were told they had been as part of the full grooming package (would have been fine, we were just trying to understand what could have caused his sudden discomfort). We were also told, for the first time, that Presley "didn't want to stand" and had been "nipping." That alone raised a brow for us. Presley is 12, and in all our years of taking him to vets and groomers, we have only ever been told he is calm and gentle. Even in moments that make most dogs anxious, like rectal exams, he stays still and sweet. Hearing that he was agitated or refusing to stand instantly told us something must have been off that day. It also should have signaled to City Dogs that something was wrong. If a consistently calm dog suddenly becomes uncooperative, that is a sign of distress and should have prompted a call before continuing the grooming. When we finally reached the grooming manager, (also the groomer), the conversation became incredibly frustrating. From the start he was defensive, speaking over us and focusing more on protecting City Dogs' reputation than on helping us understand what might have happened. To be clear, we weren't being accusatory. We weren't blaming anyone or suggesting he intentionally hurt Presley. We were trying to figure out what could have happened in those few hours that might explain why our otherwise active dog suddenly could not walk properly. Instead, he grew irritated, pointing out that we had spoken to two other staff members, (completely out of our control), and repeatedly insisting he "would never hurt a dog, especially a senior dog." We never suggested he would, we just wanted clarity. He interrupted often, dismissed questions, and even claimed we were the ones being defensive. Any pushback on our part came only from asking him to let us speak. It felt like we were being treated as an inconvenience rather than concerned dog parents. When I asked if it was normal not to call an owner when a dog refuses to stand or shows distress, he said it was not uncommon, especially for "older dogs with arthritis." That didn't make sense as Presley has never been diagnosed with arthritis or shown symptoms. At one point, he also claimed we had accused him of giving Presley medicated food, when all my husband asked was whether Presley might have eaten anything while there. The manager ended the call by telling us to monitor Presley for 24 hours and make sure he was drinking water. When my husband explained that Presley was not eating or drinking at all, the manager finally said that was "concerning" and promised a follow-up call the next day. No one has called. Presley's stiffness lessened after the first day, but he continued walking unbalanced for several days afterward. The entire experience was very disappointing. We weren't looking to blame anyone, we were trying to understand what happened and make sure Presley was okay. Instead, we were met with evasion and indifference. Accidents can happen anywhere, but how a business responds afterward defines its integrity. In our case, City Dogs failed to respond with basic care, accountability, or compassion, and that is why Presley will not be returning.

My most recent foster was a young male fox-hound mix from a rural rescue. This beautiful, spirited pup was a handful, and he and I needed help... immediately! My foster pups' particular needs were: pulling hard on walks, being constantly distracted, no recall, jumping on people out of excitement, being barky, and chewing whatever came near his mouth at home. Lily achieved drastic improvements on all fronts. As well as her professional accreditations and hands-on experience, she is currently pursuing a master's degree in animal behavior. That was one of the things that attracted me to her services, a passion rather than a job. Lily is articulate and explains behaviors, often from the dog's perspective, which is so helpful.
