Two stars - Did not meet expectations We went here for lunch to try their "world-famous pastrami sandwich." I don't want to be overly critical, but the sandwich did not meet the hype. Since we got our food to go, I cannot really speak to the service. The person at the counter who took our order was friendly enough. The restaurant is small with limited seating, but that is typical for NYC. I had two issues regarding the food. First, the sandwich is basically all meat. It did come with sauce, and the pastrami was good, but it was one-dimensional. There needed to be more fixings to add other flavors and textures to the sandwich. It is possible you could have added things onto the sandwich (maybe for an extra charge?), but we did not see anything while we were there. Second, the sandwich was overpriced. Based on other places that we ate at during the trip, $27 per sandwich without any fries, drink, etc., is pretty steep, even for NYC. Because the sandwich is mostly meat, that might be the going rate for a sandwich like that in NYC. I would have to eat at other places to be sure. Ordering out may have impacted the quality. Sandwich was juicy and delicious with lots of pepper. The hotdog had a nice char to it which made it even more tasty. The coleslaw had thick cuts of cabbage which was a great touch for that crunch. If you're in it for something else, this place is probably not worth it. It's my first pastrami sandwich and I really enjoyed it. I can't compare to others since it's my first one but the meat was tender and not too salty. The place is super tiny and only has a few tables so it's mostly takeout but they do have table service and the guy was very nice and quick with everything. They had a pretty decent menu selection but most people of course come and get the pastrami. Prices are ok for NYC but they seem to have specials on weekdays if you like combos. The two guys next to us got each a plate of fries and they gave a lot. They also have garlic fries which I would be interested to try next time. They also have combos with two meats in a sandwich which sounds pretty good too. I think if you only want meats then the solo sandwich is the way to go. But if you like sides, the combos are ok. I came here a few times when it first opened and it was usually great. Big portions of meat in the sandwich and when you asked for it to be juicy not lean and dry it always was! Something changed significantly the last couple of times both at this location and the Upper West one, so this isn't a one off /bad day but what seems a real decline. I was surprised at how little meat there was in the sandwich on a recent visit I was there at lunch and ordered the half sandwich soup special. The matzah ball soup remains stellar but I actually asked the server about the thin meat portion but he told me it was the right amount and that was that. Though I asked for it juicy it seemed dry and not particularly flavorful. I actually left not feeling full at all. Most of the remaining authentic Jewish delis in the city serve heaping heart attack portions. Not here not anymore. I don't need that, but a fair portion at full price shouldn't be a stretch.
